A Word from Our Pastor
Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
Life is a precious gift. We all believe this. This is
also reinforced to us by Jesus in the Gospel of John, “I came
that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
How do we look at life? For many people today it’s about
having the basics in place, not having to worry about the
necessities and having predictability. The necessities of life
I consider for most people are not having to give much
thought to food, clothing and shelter. They are givens.
When the basics are taken for granted it allows a
person to look for meaning in life: what makes me happy,
are my relations fulfilling, do I have job security? As I
reflect on these questions I have come to the conclusion that
once I move beyond the basics it’s more challenging to
come up with the things that make me happy on the human
level. I, however, have faith. I offer this reflection. Faith is
not considered as a noun, a belief system, but a verb, an
active pursuit of a relationship with the persons of the Holy
Trinity. It’s different to accept revealed truth and being
guiding by that revealed truth as guiding my life.
This Sunday we have the gospel account of Jesus
raising Lazarus from the dead. This is a moving
presentation that involves relationships with the family of
the deceased and we are introduced to Martha and Mary.
This presentation speaks about the call to accept Jesus as the
Lord over death. May I point out that Lazarus is raised from
the dead but he will die again because Jesus has to conquer
death himself for it to be overcome. It is only the
resurrection of Jesus from the dead that defines the ultimate
meaning of life.
This is the life that is offered to all of us through
faith. Again, not as a concept but as an active assent to the
new life that has been proclaimed by the Lord at Easter.
This reading is chosen for this Sunday to announce
to the catechumens and candidates, and all of us, what is the
true meaning of life. The members of our RCIA process are
invited into this story of raising Lazarus from the dead to
clarify who is the ultimate source of divine life. Jesus, in
this passage, says to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the
life.” He goes on to ask her, “Do you believe this?” “Yes,
Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the
Son of God who has come into the world” (John 11:27).
We believe in the gift of eternal life not based on
wishful thinking but on the act of faith in the person of the
Son. We renew that act every Sunday when we pray the
Creed.
Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday is
a common and popular
name for Holy Thursday. It begins the Triduum – the
three solemn days of remembrance before Easter. The
word Maundy is derived from the Latin mandatum, which
means commandment. As recorded in John’s gospel
(13:34), on the last night before His betrayal and arrest,
Jesus washed the feet of His disciples and then gave them
a new commandment - to love one another as He had
loved them. On Holy Thrursday we celebrate both the
institution by Christ Himself of the Eucharist and the
institution of the ministerial priesthood. On this day, there
is a special Mass in the Cathedral churches called the
Chrism Mass. This Mass is a solemn observance of
Christ’s institution of the priesthood. Also, at the
Chrism Mass the bishop blesses the Oil of Holy Chrism
used for Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. Priests
throughout the world renew their sacred promises. The
themes of Baptism and Penance permeate Lent and our
preparation for the culmination of the Liturgical year – the
Triduum and Easter. During this Lenten season may we
receive a spirit of repentance so that we may grow in our
baptismal call to holiness. May we strive to live in accord
with Christ’s mandatum to “love one another.” If you

The 2016/2017 school year will begin Sunday, August
21st for all classes. St. John’s will be preparing our
children 6th grade and older for Confirmation this
upcoming year, keeping us on schedule to comply with
Archbishop Aquila’s mandate of “Restored Order.”
We will prepare our children in 2nd grade for their First
Communion this upcoming year. This upcoming year
we will be holding all Religious Education classes on
Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.
Adult CREED
Our next Adult CREED will be held on Tuesday,
March 15th in Benedict Hall from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
The topic will be Social Gospel. The speaker is Fr.
Ron. What is adult CREED? Adult CREED is Catholic
Religious Education for Adults. It is a program designed
as a resource for our parishioners to learn more about
various aspects of our faith. We offer it simultaneously
with our Tuesday night children’s CREED program so the
parents of our students can take advantage of this class if
they choose.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW)
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a wonderful way for our
younger children to learn about the Liturgy of the Word in
way they can best understand. CLOW Liturgies will be at
the 10:30 Mass through May unless we are celebrating a
special feast day. If you would like your 4 year old-2nd
grader to attend, please show up 10 minutes early to the
10:30 Mass so the CLOW volunteers can bring your child
to the Chapel and get them settled and prepared to follow
along. The children will return to their parents at the time
of the collection, to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist
with their whole family. If you have a child who has
received their First Holy Eucharist, they are expected to
stay in the main Church and participate in the full Mass.
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is meant to help our
little ones in preparation for their First Holy Eucharist by
explaining the Liturgy of the Word and assisting them in
their understanding of that week’s Gospel.

Attention High School Seniors

The Longmont Knights of Columbus Council 1313 is
holding its annual Martin Bersano college scholarship
drive. The Knights have supported higher education in
our community for more than 20 years, having distributed
over $35,000. This year, two $1,000 scholarships will be
awarded. Applications are available in your Parish Office

applications must be received by April 13, 2016. For

Outside of St. Johns
Please join us for the Annual Good Friday Walk in
Longmont on Friday, March 25th.
This is a great opportunity for families to be
involved in our Lord's Way of the Cross, as well as a
wonderful Christian witness to the Longmont community. We will once again be walking across town in Longmont, CO. We will gather in the St. John’s parking lot
(by the playground) at 7:45 a.m. and begin the walk at
8:00 a.m. The distance to St. Francis of Assisi Church is
approximately 5 miles (3791 Pike Road at Airport Rd).
We will stop at certain points along the way to pray the
Rosary and the Stations of the Cross. We end with the
Chaplet of Divine Mercy inside St. Francis Parish right
after the walk. We hope to arrive about 11:30am. Father
Frank will also be available for confessions during and
after this time.
For those that need to walk a shorter distance or
need wheelchairs for the Walk, we should be arriving at
JC Penney on Hover and Nelson around 9:45am. Please
park on the North side of the building and look for us.
We will be gathered as a group on the North side of JC
Penney on the large sidewalk for about 10 minutes for
prayer and restroom break (at King Soopers).
Please feel free to bring: Wagons, strollers,
sunscreen, Rosaries, water, snacks for the little ones, but
please, NO bikes, skates, scooters, IPods, music, or social
texting. Kids in previous years have made their own
light-weight cross to carry; as the larger cross will be
carried by adults only. You may also bring your own
snacks and lunch for the kids to eat at the end of the walk.
Print and bring with you the Stations of the Cross
prayer booklet, 8 pages from either the St. Francis or St.
John’s websites. Make sure you have enough copies for
your family to follow along. We will also be doing the
Rosary and Litany of Humility if you need to print these
as well.
Dress for the weather! We go r ain, snow, or
sunshine! There will be cars parked at St. Francis to take
drivers back to SJB and JC Penney to retrieve their cars.
Those remaining will watch the kids at St. Francis until
they return. We’ve had upwards to 200 Christian
witnesses on the walk and it’s powerful to commemorate
Good Friday as a faith community. Please join us, and
spread the word to family and friends!

“Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá; y el que está vivo y
cree en mí, no morirá para siempre.” ¿Crees esto?" (Jn. 11, 25)
Estamos acercándonos a la semana santa y es bueno ver qué tanto hemos avanzado en la experiencia de
conversión que no es otra cosa que la experiencia de una vida nueva y renovada.
Una de las frases más importantes en la vida de Jesús es: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en
mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá; y el que está vivo y cree en mí, no morirá para siempre. ¿Crees esto?” (v.
Fr. Gerardo
25). Ésta frase define toda su vida y todo su ministerio. A eso vino, a dar vida, vida plena e interminable en
todos los sentidos imaginables.
Jesús le dice a Marta: “Yo soy”, (la resurrección y la vida) Marta sabía que estas dos palabras "Yo soy" son el
nombre de Dios revelado a Moisés en el arbusto ardiente (Éxodo 3,14), y que así Jesús se llamaba a sí mismo 'Dios'. Por
eso Marta responde sin dudar: "Sí, Señor; yo creo que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que tenía que venir al mundo".
Ésta es la quinta y más completa confesión de fe en este Evangelio de Juan (véase 1,49; 4,42; 6,69; 9,35-38).
En segundo lugar, cuando estamos ya casi en Semana Santa y Pascua, el relato de la resurrección de Lázaro es
como un anticipo de la resurrección de Jesús. Resucitando a Lázaro, Jesús se revela a sí mismo como nuestra Resurrección
y nuestra Vida, y nos revela que la última palabra sobre la realidad no la tienen ni la muerte ni el mal, sino el Padre que, por
amor y fidelidad a nosotros, nos resucitará como resucitó a su Hijo Jesús.
Jesús también nos dice a nosotros: "Sal fuera" Así es. A nosotros nos dice también: Sal fuera del sepulcro de la rutina, de la desesperación, de la tristeza, del miedo, de la violencia, de la soledad, , de la tumba del vicio y colócate en el país
de la vida. Él mismo dijo: "Vine para que tengan vida, y la tengan abundante" (Jn 10).
Si todos nosotros saliéramos de nuestras tumbas, de nuestro aislamiento, de nuestra indiferencia y camináramos
juntos en el Señor, seríamos una gran luz y una fuente de vida para todos. Sal fuera. Vive una vida de resucitado.
Sólo nos queda pedir humildemente la fe verdadera.
De joven yo era un radical, y mi oración a Dios era siempre la misma:
-Dame fuerza, Señor, para cambiar el mundo.
De mayor, viendo que no había cambiado nada, cambié mi oración y decía:
-Señor, dame fuerza para cambiar a los míos, mi familia, mis amigos, y me sentiré satisfecho.
Ahora, que soy anciano y mis días están contados mi única oración es:
-Señor, dame la gracia de cambiar yo.
