I’m a mellow person. Handling work usually comes first for me
beside family. One thing I love is music.
Who to
follow:
I go by Dario. I am a senior in high school, and I’m a Puerto
Rican bachata artist. I’m nice.
@LCISD
I’m more of a thinker than a talker. The status I see myself falling
under is laid back.

@Journailsm
@FBISD
@FortBend
@Liliana
I’m shy at first but once I get comfortable I start being myself. I
like to laugh a lot but I also get mad easily.
@Kerry
A caring, humble guy who loves making music and making
people laugh. A true night owl. I really hope to change the world and inspire.
@Stephanie
Walking on the grass without shoes, NPR radio, connecting with
people through music, goofing off. It’s the little things I enjoy.
@Brianna
Brianna. Class of 2015. Second year in magazine. I was hatched
from a Versace egg.
@Ale
There’s no “x” in my name. For the longest, I’ve been known as
Alex and I don’t like it. I like my name. So call me Alejandra.
@Alyssa
My name is Alyssa. I’m a junior and it’s my second year of magazine. I’m addicted to my hair and lipstick.
@Claudia
My favorite things to do are spend time with my best friend and
draw. My favorite colors are red, black, yellow and lime green.
@Thomas
I like to write poetry. My nickname is #Grimlock. I used to play
guitar. Anime is my thing. Computers is what I do.
@Larenz
I’m a junior and this is my second year on the magazine staff. I
enjoy magazine class and I am looking forward to a good year.
@Arianna
Fun. Short. And full of energy. I am 4’11, but that doesn’t stop
me from doing what I love which is dancing.

Book Reviews
Thomas Rubio and Claudia Arevalo
Young adult literature thrives on the frustration and aspects of growing older and fitting
in. Here are our top picks for how to overcome those awkward years and become who
we’re supposed to be.
Jonas, a boy with the ability to
receive memories. How will he use
them? Will he be able to save his
family with his powers?
The Giver
Jonas is a special who is picked out of the ceremony
of 12, for a job as “The Receiver.” He is instructed by
the “The Giver” to receive the past memories and feelings of the world. Jonas is clueless about the things
that are happening to him. Jonas was given specific
instructions from “The Giver” to lie to his friends and
family. Jonas himself doesn’t know where all this will
fit into his life.
A gorgeous heroine. An over-thetop bad guy. Will good triumph
over evil? More importantly, who
will Katniss choose?
Harry Potter
Hunger Games
Somewhere in the future, the world is divided into 12
districts with a very strange view on entertainment:
teens fight to the death for survival. We meet the
brave teen Katniss who volunteers to take her sister’s
place to fight for her district. This is her chance to
prove to herself and the world that somebody has to
fight for what’s right.
Beatrice, a.k.a. Tris, undergoes life-changing experiences
such as love and learning to survive. Will she be able to
catch a hold of this romance she’s seeking? Can she survive this dangerous game?
Divergent
Beatrice, who renames herself Tris, enters a highly
competitive sport that could prove to for her that life
isn’t always pleasant as she see’s it. Through out this
competition she struggles with her life to find out who
her friends really are. Along the way, she hopes to find
a little romance as well. How will she be able to get
around all the trouble happening around Chicago? Read
on and see.
Melinda, a teenager, is hiding
secrets from her best friend
as well as herself. She goes
through a life changing
experience. Will she ever lose
the pain holding her down?
Will she be able to let her
secret out?
6
The seven series in the Harry
Potter series takes readers from
a young boy who has no clue
he's a powerful wizard to one
who defeats “he who must not
be named.” A great growing-up
tale, especially for those who
think they don't fit in and feel
they have great strength inside
themselves.
It’s hard to be friends with Harry
Potter. You’re chased, almost
murdered and fear for your life
every day at Hogwarts. One of
the first teen novels that doesn’t
talk "down" to readers and
paints an elaborate story line
in a world no one’s ever read
about before.
Speak
Melinda Sordino busted an end-of-summer party by
calling the cops. Now her old friends won't talk to her,
and people she doesn't even know hate her from a
distance. The safest place to be is alone, inside her own
head. But even that's not safe because there's something she's trying not to think about, something about
the night of the party that, if she lets it in, it would blow
her carefully constructed disguise to smithereens.
Artists Burning Up & Down The Charts
By: Kerry Traore’
Underrated Artists
These musicians aren’t getting the love and
respect they deserve. We hope to change that:
Childish Gambino, real
name Donald Glover, produces his own music and
writes for other artists. His
album “Because the Internet” was overlooked, and
that’s a shame because
this guy is good. Highlight
tracks are “3005,” “Sweatpants,” “The Worst Guys”
and “Telegraph Ave.”
Dom Kennedy, a West
Coast California rapper, is
an underground favorite,
especially in Rosenbeg/
Richmond. He was voted
second most underrated
due to his smooth flow
and rhyme schemes with
clever lyrics. All of those
are evident on his album
“Get Home Safely” with
standouts like “After
School” and “South Central Love.”
Big K.R.I.T. is a producer/
rapper with a soulful,
southern, country sound.
His old-school vocals and
soul touching beats are
the reasons he is such an
amazing artist. He takes
the sounds our parents
love and makes us love
them with his laid-back
demeanor. K.R.I.T. is
gearing up to release his
second album “Cadillactica.” Check out his “King
Remembered in Time”
mixtape. You won’t regret
it.
Hottest Artists
Whether or not you like their music, these artists
are lighting up the charts. We asked 200 students
to name the hottest artists. Here they are:
Drake, the guy everyone loves or hates, or
loves to hate. Only 27,
with a Grammy for Best
Rap Album and more
#1 hits than Jay-Z, the
Canadian’s success is
undeniable. He delivers
songs that becomes the
soundtrack to life.

Kendrick Lamar released one of the most
amazing albums in the
last decade. “Good kid,
m.A.A.d. City” is considered an instant classic.
Clever metaphors and
movie-like storytelling
set him light years apart
from peers. He recently
put out his first single
in 2 years, “i” containing
an Isley Brothers sample
encouraging us all to love
ourselves.
J.Cole is the guy we can
all relate to. His tales of
student college loans,
girl problems, and world
issues gives us a level
of comfort as if we are
holding a conversation
with ourselves instead
of listening to music. He
could have been put in
the underrated category
when his album “Born
Sinner” was among
Grammy snubs last year.
In the News
Thinking about getting your parking
permit? There’s a fair way to do so and avoid
riding a crowded bus.
Get a parking permit. Twenty dollars is
all a student needs to pay to be able to park
in the school parking lot. Purchase a sticker
from one of the school’s security guards.
Bring in proof of insurance and a driver’s
license.
Officer Hunter suggests that if students
have a driver’s license, he or she should definitely consider getting a permit for their car.

Art students Juan Ortiz and Roderick Jones won money at the Fort
Bend County Fair art sale. Ortiz won $3,605 with his picture of
“Icu,” and Jones won $7,100. A copy of the picture Jones drew was
presented to the cowboy featured in the painting.
Fitting In
The very first time I stepped through the
doors of Terry, I felt small and belittled. It was
a new school and there would be many kids
older and more “normal” surrounding me like
a pack of wolves. Fear filled me shortly after my
older sister, a junior at the time, abandoned me
in the middle of some random hallway.
Many new faces passed my way. I searched
eagerly for a familiar presense and found none.
I worried and thought to myself, “Will anyone
like me? Will I make a new friend? I don’t
want to be a loner forever!” Panic swished all
throughout me as I made my way past the many
groups of friends hugging each other. With hope
slipping slowly away, at last, I found one of my
best friends and comfort filled me. The fear within me had vanished and I could finally relax.
- Claudia Arevalo
Growing up, I never felt like I fit in and, to be honest I still don’t. No matter how much I want to be numb,
I can’t because the truth is I care. I think most people do;
they’re just afraid to admit it. I can’t be numb because
then everyone who looks up to me will go on like others
pretending they don’t care. It’s okay to feel like you’re
on the outside. Half of the time, those people are the
most talented ones, the real cool kids. So often we’re
forced to hide emotions or alter our character because of
who or what we are around but not anymore. I can’t keep
up this game of charades, because eventually it will tear
me apart. That’s why I write and play music. I want
people to know someone, somewhere feels their
pain, that someone gets it, and that someone is going
through something similar. And I’m not even 100 percent confident with that because I’m sticking myself out
there, and there’s no telling what people will say and do.
I’m learning that doesn’t even matter as long as you are
happy. That’s what we should all work toward instead of
fitting into a clique for four years.

How do you stand
out and still fit in?
By Elizabeth
Vasquez and
Liliana Olvera
Being new here, I feel that Terry
has a family atmosphere and
it feels like home. I’m a very
family-oriented person, and
I adore the staff and student
body. We all come from different backgrounds trying to
achieve one goal, which is to be
more successful. I hope that I’m
an asset to the Terry puzzle that
I call home.
- Ms. Keschia Jones
I stand out a little bit because I’m the new police
officer and have big shoes to
fill. I feel excited about being
here because every campus
offers something different.
- Officer Jonas Castillo
Terry is an exciting place to
work. After teaching high
school level courses for six
years, I feel I fit in with the maturity level at the high school.
The staff at THS is family oriented and has been extremely
welcoming since the start of the
year. I look forward to a great
year building relationships and
rapport with students and staff.
- Mr. Jose Pineda
I’m usually at mostly varsity
games. You will also see me
at the training room every
morning. I feel I am a perfect
fit for Terry High School. I
have waited for my dream
job for over 20 years. The job,
the faculty, the students and
the athletes make it worthwhile to come to work. This is
truly my passion.
- Doc Cindy Tiegs
I’ve always stood out since
kindergarten because I have
always been taller than everyone else. My attitude also
makes me stand out because
I am always happy to be at
work and also joking around
with the kids.
- Mr. Sean Riley
I like being here. It’s a fun
place to be at, but it’s also a
new challenge and I don’t really feel like I stand out. I try
to blend in most of the time.
- Mr. Patrick LeClair
It feels great to be back after graduating from Terry in
2002. I came back last year
so I don’t feel like I stand
out.
- Ms. Courtney
Stevenson
I stand out because I am
loud and obnoxious. I am
usually the one you hear
yelling at the students in
the hallways.
- Mr. Robert Glimore

Chris is a bit idiotic,
although, he does excel
in art and drawing. An
awkward teenager overall, he is also sensitive,
mild-mannered, and
dominant.
Meg is overly concerned with her image
and fitting in. She never
seems to be accepted
by anyone, but despite
all obstacles she is still
determined to fit in.
Brian comes off with a
strong, dominant vibe.
He has strong intellectual interests and
is a true romantic. He
deeply loves his family
but still wants his own
life of independence.
He seeks excitement
and finding out who he
really is.
Peter, although idiotic and impulsive, is
fun-loving and lives
in the moment. He
makes decisions using
his gut feeling rather
than logic. He loves his
family and is eager to
help them. He’s not that
hard to figure out, but
there is more to him
than what meets the
eye.
Lois is caring and has
a cunning edge to her
personality. She brings
stability to the family
and loves them with all
her heart. Despite her
competitivness, she’s
artistic and has various
talents.
Stewie, although obsessed with world domination, has changed
over time. There is a
soft side to him that
comes out every now
and then.

Dear jad, I have
a hard time
saving money after i get
paid. How can i
conserve what
i have?
My answer:
Trust me, I have the EXACT same problem.
What I used to do is keep my money in a
“money jar” in my room until I realized I was
reaching in there almost every day. When
I opened my bank account, it was easier to
keep track of my money by only keeping
$50 in cash and the rest on my card. It’ll
help if you’re not one of those people who
swipes their card for everything.

Fitting In
Not once have I walked
into a room and thought
they all like me. Of course
I want to fit in, whether it
be in baseball, basketball,
magazine or just in school
period. I’ve also realized that
people will leave you or stay
based on their opinion, so I’ll
just keep working and they
can leave if they want. I’m
just me.
- Devin Hollis
I rubbed my eyes and
took a second glance at the
board. I was nominated for
homecoming queen. Me.
Nominated? An outcast
like me? It seemed unreal.
My social circle is tiny, small.
There was no way my name
was on that board. But it was.
We all face our own demons -- will they like me? Will I find a crowd to
hang out with in the mornings? Where’s my place in this school? Read
how our staff found their slot and where they plug in:
We are told to be
different by the world. The
words are simple to say
but to act upon them is
not. Have a firm belief or
opinion on anything different, or just be all-around
different than the majority,
and they will try to swallow
you up and spit you out.
Try to change your mind,
and they’ll taunt you for
it. You know how I know?
Because I’ve lived through
it. Life is hard and uncomfortable, but you must push
on through, because you
know being a copy of a
copy is boring really.
- Alejandra Huerta
I really don’t care about
fitting in. Growing up, my
parents always told me not
to care what poeple think of
you and not to let it bother
you. If you like me you like
me, if you don’t you don’t.
Life goes on, it’s not the
end of the world.
At some point in life,
everyone wants to fit in,
whether it’s in elementary
school or it’s at your job
or career choice.
There’s always different cliques and groups
throughout your life,
and you may think you
need to change yourself
in order to fit in and be
accepted.
The truth is, if you
can be your own person
and think for yourself,
you are already ahead
of the other followers.
- Larenz Villaloboz
- Stephanie Antunez
The first time I started
to write poetry wasn’t all
that nerve racking, but having to read it out loud to a
whole class I didn’t know
was like “oh my goodness, are they gonna like
it or not?” But after having
read it out loud it felt ok.
I wasn’t nervous anymore.
Because that’s what I do. I
write poetry for a living.
Fitting in,
to me, is where
you feel wanted
and comfortable around
the people who
mean the most
to you.
- Alyssa
Guerrero
Coming into
magazine, I didn’t
know what to expect.
I knew there was going to be new faces
that I wasn’t used to.
The only person
I recognized was my
friend Elizabeth. I
though that returning
staffers were going to
be rude and stuck up
to us newbies because
they knew a lot of
things and we didn’t,
so that got me a little
nervous.
As the weeks
went by, I got to know
some of the staffers
and my thoughts were
wrong.
They are really nice and helpful
people. Anything you
need help on, they
are there to guide you
through it.
My feelings that
I had before have
changed about magazine. It’s a great class
to be in, and this year
will be great.
- Liliana Olvera
-Thomas Rubio
- Patrick Alvarez
Honestly when it comes
to fitting in for me, I could care
less. I don’t try to fit in anywhere
because I am my own person. So
why would I want to fit in? Life
isn’t about fitting in. It’s about
standing out. When I joined Rangerettes, I didn’t do it to fit in. I did
it because I love to dance.
- Arianna Cantu
I was excited but nervous about being on the magazine staff. I
didn’t know what to expect or if I was even going to be good at it. I
didn’t know if the rest of the staff memebers would approve of me
or my work. All I knew was that my best friend was going to be in the
class with me and that made me look forward to being on the staff
even more. I’ve enjoyed being part of the team and meeting new
people, people I would have probably not talked to if it wasn’t for this
class.
It was really difficult to join the magazine class.
When I first heard about the opportunity, I thought,
“This class could be fun.” How to join was the hard part.
I came to class and asked Ms. Adams if I could have the
opportunity to join the magazine class. She didn’t let
me join just like that. I had to write an essay about why
I wanted to be on the staff.
After that, I was happy. I was in a class where I
could express my thoughts so people could read them.
- Elizabeth Velasquez
I was still nervous, wondering if the magazine staff
would like me. The underlying reason was maybe I
wasn’t good enough to be in this class. But when I
walked in the first day, sat at my seat and met all the
staffers, I knew they were nice, helpful and awesome
people. With the help with all the magazine staff, I
knew I had a place in here.

In The News
Don’t dismiss
the
quiet people
I’m looking around my class, and
I see people who never say a word. I
ought to be hunkered down and finishing my worksheet, but I find myself
wondering what those quiet people
are thinking about.
Part of me wants to dismiss them
as not very interesting. But then they
write a passage down, I read song
lyrics they’ve written or I spot a poem
they’ve scribbled in the margins of
their paper.
And then I realize I’ve been
wrong. Just because they’ve been
quiet doesn’t mean they don’t have a
lot to say.
They are the unspoken people.
Maybe they feel if they say something, they will no longer be accepted
or looked at the same way in the eyes
of their peers.
Perhaps they feel as if their words
aren’t what people want to hear, so
they keep them bottled up, locked
away under a steel door of emotion,
until the voice becomes so quiet, it’s
hard to hear it any more.
Strong Voices
But reading their words, I know
they have strong voices. Musicians mix
their thoughts and emotions into their
songs.
From bands like Black Veil Brides
and A Day to Remember all the way
to rappers like Tupac and Kendrick
Lamar, every artist has an unspoken
story that’s being revealed in their
music.
Speak to them, and you may never even know what they go through
because they can’t speak it, but throw
in a beat and a few hours to write and
they make a story out of it.
Freedom rapper Lupe Fiasco
writes that silence is worse than violence. We’re scared, he writes, to even
tell the truth, afraid of what you think
of me: I’m scared of even telling you.
If there’s a jail of emotion locked away
in you, consider this your bailing out.
That kid in class that you think
is a nobody has a whole world of
thoughts rushing through his mind.
Maybe he’s the next “somebody.” If
you’re that person locked in a cell of
thought and emotion, just let it out.

Top 10 Rap Albums - From duds to dynamite
By Isaiah Villalobos
There’s RAP albums then there’s rap albums. Here’s our top picks.
Kanye West - Yeezus. I don’t know
how this album made #1 on the
billboards as it’s more of a disappointment than a success. I’d rather
download this album for free than
buy it.
Pusha T - My Name is My Name.
Drake - Nothing Was The Same. I
give this album 4 out of 5 stars. It’s
passionate and rude at the same
time. Drake is on top of the genre
right now and killing the rap game.
J.Cole - Born Sinner. When this
album is playing, the next button on
your MP3 player doesn’t exist. From
begining to end, Mr. Cole World
drops the hottest album in 2013.
Danny Brown - Old. If you love rap
and love dubstep, then this album
is for you as it’s filled with lyrical
and fire breathing beats. Features
run from Ab-soul to A$ap Rocky. It’s
worth a listen.
Earl Sweatshirt - Doris. This CD is
Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP 2.
A$AP Ferg - Trap Lord. Work.
Work. Work. This album makes you
want to get moving! Fast and vicious,
A$ap Ferg delivers a fresh beat worth
listening to over and over again.
Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap.
Jay-Z - Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Fire! Every beat on this album is
Fire! but the rhythm wasn’t satifying
and the word scheme wasn’t either.
Frankly, I expected more.
one you can just kick back with and
let your mind drift. A slow, banging
beat comes with a deep story, and
it’s delivered pretty close to perfect.
Taking it back to the 90’s, Eminem
brings back his old persona “Slim
Shady” and proves that he truly is
today’s “rap god.”
Original Masterpiece. The Chicago
Kid delivers an massive mixtape with
a different style which has people
iffy about his music. His music stands
out and thats why he’s a force to be
listened to.
Another CD for the books. This album is for the haters who said Jay-Z
fell off the rap chart. It’s an intelligent piece of work from an intelligent musician.

Ever since the 1960s, rock remains at the top of the music charts.
Today’s rock isn’t as boisterous as the 70s and 80s, but good music is
good music.
- Lonely the Brave - Call of Horses.
- Great Divide (Twin Atlantic). A brilliant CD with heartfelt lyrics,
especially “The Ones I Love.” Smooth and mellow. A child of the 70s
will love this album.
- Wheatus: Their song “Teenage Dirtbags” sold over 45 million CDs.
This song about someone not knowing you and judging you goes
back to the Temptations’ hit “Just My Imagination.”
There’s music that doesn’t fit into a category. New artists are out
there, but it’ll take some digging to find some really good ones like
“Terraplane Sun” and “Mercies”. Don’t forget the “oldies but goodies” rock albums like “In a Gadda Da Vida” by Iron Butterfly. Nobody
knows what the song means, but a strong bass beat and guitar licks
from Carlos Santana more than make up for the lack of lyrics. If you
need a bit more Santana, check out “Black Magic Woman.”
Pop music today isn’t all it’s cut out to be either. Billboard
charts blindly claim that Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Justin
Bieber are the top artists of the year. Maybe we’re relying on
the old standbys instead of listening to some new sounds.
Check out Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith and break away from
the crowd.
Top pop Billboard albums to date are “Thriller” by Michael
Jackson, “In the Lonely Hour” by Sam Smith and “Pure
Heroine” by Lorde. The song “Thriller” never gets dated and
Michael Jackson’s legend grows stronger every year. It’ll be
tough to topple Jackson’s album from the top of the chart
and it’s anybody’s guess as to who the next King of Pop will
be.
Hip Hop/Rap music is alive and exciting, and new talent is constantly bringing a feast to the table. It’s a lyrical
war between the emerging artists and the underground
artists, but here’s who the top mainstream artists are:
1. Wiz Khalifa
2. Lil Wayne
3. Drake
Top albums:
1. Marshall Mathers LP2 (Eminem)
2. The New Classic - Iggy Azalea
3. Young Money - Rise of an Empire

Adding to the library shelves
Story by Ashley Agnello & Paige Kelly
Head librarian Lisa Rose
said 200 new
books have
arrived.
Andrea
Rubalcaba
Most people think a library is a quiet place for people to study and read. Life, however, runs a little differently in the library at Terry High School.
Before school starts in the morning, the library is a
common place for students to come together, all under
the watchful eye of Librarian Lisa Rose who’s been at Terry for the past 11 years. Some students play video games
on the computers while others tweak and print papers for
classes.
At the tables, some students play “Magic” card
games while others complete homework. With all of these
events happening before the first bell rings, the library
becomes a symphony of papers shuffling and hushed
voices.
During school hours the library is a mix of quiet and
organized chaos. English classes filter in and out every 20
minutes or so to work on research papers. Other students
are allowed in to check out books, print papers or complete an assignment given to the class when they were
absent. Anyone visiting the library during lunch, class or
advisory needs a pass from their teacher.
One of the more popular hours in the library is the
lunch hour. Students come in and work or play games,
just like they do in the mornings. Still others come to
hang with friends and socialize.
After the final bell rings, the library continues to
hum. Students meet up to be part of groups like the
Anime Club or come to the library to take advantage of
the after-school tutoring program, Ranger Success Center. RSC helps students with subjects they find difficult.
There’s also a school store.
“Instead of waiting until you get home and pestering your parents that you need supplies, just come to
the school store,” Rose said. They sell pencils, pens and
posterboards.
The library offers up to 18,000 items, ranging from
books, to DVDs to gaming devices and iPods. Two hundred more books are arriving this fall. To prevent theft, a
five-foot scanner beeps if an item hasn’t been scanned.
Manga books are the most popular. Electronic devices are loaded with educational software, games and apps
that can do everything from entertain to teach a student a
new language. To find out more about the library, visit the
school’s Website.

The night our
lives changed
Alejandra Huerta
My thoughts
Red, white, and blue flashing lights. Or was it
blue, red, and white? The colors still race in my head,
and the noise of the sirens still makes my stomach
turn. Life was perfect for a second and as soon as
those sirens came on I knew. I knew they’d discover the stench called alcohol. I knew as soon as that
window rolled down my father would be gone and life
would never be the same.
We all have that special someone who’s either
the most wonderful gift given, and at times you want
them to disappear. Life without them is unimaginable.
You never comprehend the pain of a losing someone
until you’ve experienced a tragedy. It’s like having
your heart ripped out of your chest and then dragged
along the concrete. Only worse.
All the things that didn’t matter before matter.
All the small things you took for granted become
significantly meaningful. You reminisce on the times
he would come home from work and wanted to have
a family BBQ on a Tuesday. Nothing special just to get
the family together. You reflect, all those times you
were being a brat and he was being stubborn, but,
really, that was good parenting. I became aware that
my father had been the most influential person in my
life and I didn’t know how much until the night I saw
his hands behind his back and handcuffed.
Month after month I prayed, promised, and
pleaded. What seemed like eternity was only several
months. I remember coming home sometime in December to my father at our kitchen table.
He was pale as the snow and thinner than I had
remembered. He had freckles I’ve never paid attention
to. I dropped my school bag and ran with tears of joy
and excitement that I had my dad home in time for
Christmas.
Sometimes I felt small. So he’d say “You know
great things come in small packages.” That’s when I
came to the conclusion that he was always, or at least
tried to be, there for me as a father and a friend. But
as his daughter I didn’t find the concept possible. I
believed in the typical “I’m your daughter and I can’t
stand you.” concept. I had believed in a concept I had
simulated all on my own.
I want people to appreciate what they have and
be aware of their loved ones. I want people to never take someone for granted and show them you
respect, treasure, and most of all love them unconditionally. No one should go through the agonizing pain
of having that special someone ripped from their life,
whether it’s a friend, lover, sibling, or parent.
You really never know what you have until it’s
gone. You only get one family. Could you really live
without them?

Are you
settling in
life?
Editorial
Kerry Traore
My thoughts
Everyone starts out their own person with one-of-a-kind
thoughts and one-of-a-kind fingerprints. Then we get to an age
where we start to look for a blueprint, footsteps to follow.
These might be footsteps of a father, mother, cousin, maybe a
friend. That’s the age we start to lose our innocence, our creativity,
our innovation. A young boy with dreams of being a carpenter like
his father might be limiting himself before he even steps out into
the world. Deciding to take someone else’s path so early chisels
away at the endless possibilities for you.
Are children not told enough how bright the future is? Or are
we naturally insecure, leading us to emulate our definition of cool?
Maybe both, maybe neither.
Maybe those to whom we look to for the answers are looking
themselves. Maybe the girl who serves you coffee every day in her
dad’s shop is only there to make her father happy or she’s afraid of
what she’s capable of becoming.
We all fear our true power. We’ve all had the chance to do
something we’re interested in but, we didn’t because we were
scared or thought we’d look stupid.
We care how we look because we see people judged every day
for being who they are. We mask who we truly are for safety but it
costs us possible happiness. Some people spend more time trying
to be someone else or around someone else than they do attempting to find themselves. I’m even guilty of a lot of these things.
I’m not saying I know how to fix it; I’m just letting people know
it’s there. When you read this, ask yourself if you’re settling. If you
are, then stop. Once you’re comfortable with yourself and what
you’re doing or going for, then people will gravitate towards you.
There are people who aren’t afraid to be who they are and are
born with a natural confidence. Imagine how different the world
would be if we were all individuals living to our full potential. It
would be amazing the things we could do.
The next Steve Jobs isn’t taking computer classes because his
friends don’t think it’s cool. The next Beyonce is too insecure to sing
in front of the mirror, let alone on a stage or the next great speaker
has been taught not to speak out.
The future is left to suffer.

Emmanuel Williams’ love for

the movie, a pair of Nike sneakers,

no surprise he was wearing a pair of

struggles and hardships he feels
every day in life.
The sophomore wants to go
to college for business and own a
sneaker store one day. He dreams
of playing at Kentucky, Kansas, or
Indiana, all division 1 colleges, on a
scholarship.
As his pre-game rituals, he
prays for his team and himself. He’s
also a huge fan of music, so when
the bus is rolling, he’s tucked into
his seat nodding his head to music.
He’s a huge fan of Christian rap so
his playlist consists of artists such as
Lecrae, KB, and Andy Mineo.
With no favorite team, he
honestly is a fan of basketball. The
players who have influenced him,
pushing him to grind harder, are
NBA legends Pistol Pete Maravich
and Allen Iverson.
He’s always wanted to be

Booh Maxwell
Drake James
Michael Maxwell,
also known as “Booh,” is
an outstanding player on
the varsity football team.
Michael’s positions are
running back and defensive
back. Maxwell started
playing football at the age of 6. “My
uncle was in the NFL, so therefore I want to be
just like him. He inspires me,” he said. When he
plays football, the best feeling for him “is the
intensity. It allows [him] to release [his] anger
along” with his stress. By Arianna Cantu

Drake James plays two
positions - quarterback and
defensive back. He started playing football in the
eighth grade in Humble.
“No one really inspired me
to play football; I did it on
my own,” James said. Football takes him to a
different place, he said, where his mind is free.
“Football makes me feel important and a part
of something.” James said there’s nothing like
scoring a touchdown. He’s currently nursing an
ankle injury. By Arianna Cantu
