Seasonal greetings to all of you! A time of
year when perhaps we are all inclined to
over-indulge ourselves a little, but when
really we should be remembering others and
perhaps be setting aside our own preoccupations to show goodwill to all around
us. Many of you may be aware I am a retired
head teacher and I can recall one school
assembly just after the annual Christmas
holiday when children were asked about
their recent Christmas presents and which
one was most important or had been the
best. After a succession of children giving
excited eulogies about Star Wars toys,
electronic games, and so on; one little lad
stepped up to the front to tell us about the
present he had bought for his Mum and how
pleased he was that she loved it so much.
That small boy’s unselfish thoughts about ‘his
best present’ and his Mum’s joy on Christmas
day brought a special magic into our lives at
that morning assembly.
You will know from the recent
Questionnaire, our Parish Council is
preparing a Neighbourhood Development
Plan. Thanks are due to everyone who took
time to fill one in and also to those who
came to view the results at the Open Day in
September. It was pleasing to note that
many of the long cherished policies of your
Parish Council were reflected in villagers’
responses, as well as those replies also
sharing many of the council’s main concerns
over matters such as traffic, and pressures
from housing development.
The Neighbourhood Plan will set out a
vision of how we all hope our village can
develop over the next few decades and can
be used to guide us in local decision making
to achieve those aims. Considerations of
planning matters, traffic, infrastructure, etc,
etc, will all feature in the Plan but perhaps
more importantly for our wellbeing and
daily life will be the section that sets out
our hopes for improving community
services: with issues of support for the
young, the elderly, leisure facilities, the
work of voluntary groups, and so on. We
welcome the involvement of all the various
village groups as well as individuals, so
please pass on your thoughts and
suggestions about this particular area of the
NDP. Please be aware we are still gathering
information and collecting views at each
stage of the preparation process, and there
will be more consultation days as part of
this, so there is still time to pass on your
comments and views.
Do remember, however, the little lad at that
Christmas assembly I mentioned at the start
of this piece, and as you do so, direct your
thoughts to the needs of others and the
benefits to the wider community as you give
consideration to our village and its future.

The village of Moulton, located to the rural north of the town of
Northampton has a thriving community of about 3600 people.
Moulton Village Hall is managed by the Parish Council for the
benefit of local people.
The Village Hall is ideally suited for: Meetings, Parties,
Wedding Receptions, Club Nights, Social Events.
Accommodation comprises the Main Hall, Kitchen, Committee
Room, Bar and Lounge area which can be hired separately or
as a whole.
The Village Hall has a capacity of 200 people, depending on the
type of function, with a maximum of 100 people seated.
The Hall is fully equipped with tables, upholstered chairs, a
portable Public Address System, stage spotlights and a fitted
projector screen which can be made available for appropriate
bookings.
Consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Village Hall is
permitted subject to the necessary licence being obtained.
Enquiries and bookings for the bar and lounge of the Sports
Complex should be made on 01604 641622. For further advice
please contact the Clerk.
The Kitchen has stainless steel fitted equipment and a catering
size stove and oven. It is fully equipped with crockery.
• People with disabilities should find all facilities easily
accessible both in the Village Hall and in the Sports Complex.
• There is a large car park adjacent to the Village Hall shared
with the School and the Sports Complex. Availability is
dependent on usage.

As a former Member of the European
Parliament I used to try to represent a whole
region, the East Midlands, to the best of my
ability. That said, it was an impossible task to
get around such a diverse and vast area. As
I looked around at the last Labour Government’s
attempts to regionalise everything, I became
very aware that the temptation was that all
services get sucked into the area of “highest
demand” – the “Golden triangle” between
Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. This meant
those
living
in
Lincolnshire
and
Northamptonshire received less, even though
in tax terms they contributed more.
The mammoth grandiose projects that Labour
loved so much – like the regionalisation of
Fire Control, failed terribly and cost the
taxpayer millions.
When the Coalition came in I thought we
killed much of this regionalisation and all the
failures attached with it and I was truly
delighted to see them all go.
However, one regionalisation project still went
ahead. The Ambulance service went from
“Two Shires” (two counties) to “EMAS” – the
East Midlands Ambulance Service and since
then all the horrible old qualities of a
regionalised service have been on display.
Lots of money has been spent, supposedly to
save money in the long term, at the centre in
Nottingham. Personnel has been “centralised”
at a cost of over £1m, but still a huge amount
of the work is done within each ambulance
station. At the same time, the service is
struggling to meet its targets.
Now I am no fan of targets set from the centre
and if you ask anyone who works in the
Ambulance Service you’ll know that they are
completely arbitrary anyway. There doesn’t
seem to be much science between whether
you have to attend a call within eight or
fourteen minutes – but this is currently what
the Service is measured on and if you live in
my constituency then, to be quite frank, you’re
lucky to get an ambulance arrive within the
targeted time.
This is not the Service’s fault – it is simply
because of the huge area that they have
to service.
So, why am I telling you this? Well, right now
the East Midlands Ambulance Service is
consulting on a re-structuring of the service it
provides and consulting on its proposals. The
aim for them is to reduce costs by reducing
Stations and is based on some very
sophisticated modelling of demand.
I have looked at these plans and I’ve spent a
day with the Ambulance Service on the front
line, as it were. I’ve talked with various people
who work for the service and even had the
Head of EMAS down to my constituency to
talk through the plans with me and local
Paramedics and I have come to the conclusion
that unless you live very close to Northampton

in my constituency, these plans do not work in
the interest of the majority of my constituents.
A couple of people are campaigning about the
retention of Ambulance Stations. I believe
there is a need to keep at least one open, in
Daventry, if the needs of my mainly rural
constituency are to be served properly and the
quality of working conditions maintained for
those who work for EMAS. However, I’m not
over exercised about bricks and mortar. In this
case I’m much more concerned about
maintaining a quality of service for my
constituents and this means how quickly and
safely an ambulance can get to you.
Actually, following my day with EMAS, I did
think there were a number of areas in which
the service could be improved that would both
save money and make the Paramedics and
their colleagues’ jobs a tiny bit easier and their
conditions a bit more tolerable. As you would
expect, the staff have excellent ideas on this
too. Alas, I’m not convinced the regionalised
EMAS is over-worried about the views of those
on the periphery of its region.

Perhaps you disagree with me and believe
that Labour’s old regionalisation policies were
best for the emergency services – whatever
your views, it is worth taking part in the
consultation and reminding EMAS that they
have to serve the whole of the East Midlands,
not just the parts it is easy to reach and that
if it does not do this, then perhaps we should
be pushing for a Northamptonshire
Ambulance Trust to take over the service
for our County.

I hope that not too many of our local walkers
have found their enthusiasm dampened by the
recent and long spells of appalling weather
which seem to have dominated most of our
summer and autumn. The consequent saturated
ground conditions must have presented an extra
challenge to many of us venturing out on foot!
As many local walkers will know, during the
past few years, in addition to the normal
network of public rights of way, we have been
fortunate in having available to us three
separate walking routes which, for a specified
period prior to 2007, were apparently
allocated to the area for the benefit of the
public, under special access orders made
under the “Countryside Stewardship Scheme”.
One of these routes commenced in Boughton
Fair Lane to the north of Moulton village and
ran in a generally northerly direction over
Moulton College farmland and formed a
useful link with a public footpath just south of
Pitsford Reservoir. This and other similar
routes, as far as I am aware, have since
remained available on an ‘informal’ basis for
several years now, although the original access
order relating to the route from Boughton Fair
Lane was not renewed.
It was only very recently I was asked by several
walkers to look into the situation as they told
me they’d become concerned as to whether
the route from Boughton Fair Lane had been
officially closed, principally due to the fact that
a stile, previously placed at the southern end (at
Boughton Fair Lane) was no longer in situ and
that an adjacent gate had been secured by
padlock and chain. Due to these circumstances
they had become somewhat anxious about the
future availability of the route.
Happily, having since been in touch with the
Farm Manager at Moulton College, I have been
assured that the College authority, they having
had the opportunity to consider the matter,
have no immediate plans to deny bona fide

understand that access will continue to be
granted on an ‘informal’ basis only and there

will endeavour to deal with the matter of

Two other routes in the area (Spectacle Lane
to Butcher’s Lane, Boughton and on the east
side of Pitsford) will remain available on a

The College would also like to make it clear
that the driveway from Pitsford Road
(Moulton) to Lodge Farm remains private and
only available for those on official business.

this opportunity to thank Moulton College
authorities for their help and cooperation.
Finally, may I stress the need for caution in
the light of recent reports concerning the
very serious threat to our ash trees due to
the disease commonly known as ‘Ash
Dieback’. Details of this latest problem have
been well covered in the media. Walkers,
I suggest, should by now be particularly aware
of what to look out for and the precautions
which we can take e.g. washing or sterilizing
footwear after visiting woodland areas.

Choosing our 2013 May Queen
This will take place as usual during the
Annual ‘Extravaganza’ Barn Dance to be
held in the Secondary School Hall on
Saturday, 26th January. The choosing
of the May Queen will be held at
about 9.30pm. A prize of £150 goes
to the successful lady who must be
from Moulton and be over 16 years
of age at the time of selection. All
wishing to enter must be at the
school hall by 9pm and will be admitted
free of charge.
Festival Saturday is 18th May 2013
We need volunteers to organise events,
concerts, stalls, and so on! This is our 42nd
year but if this enjoyable village week is to
continue we do need to find enthusiastic
helpers from the younger generations.
Please don’t just moan about what you think
should happen … offer your help, get
involved and organise your own thing!
We particularly need more stalls,
entertainments and sideshows for Festival
Saturday afternoon – please organise
something and register it (call 646818) so it
can be listed in our programme.
In recent years we’ve suffered from “ambush
selling” by unofficial stalls so please be
sure to register with us if you intend to
have a stall, sell refreshments or have a sale
of any kind.
Whilst we respect that many of these fund
raising efforts are run to support good
causes it is only fair to give a reasonable
donation into the funds to help
cover insurance and other set-up costs
and expenses.

It would be grand to have new events and
ideas for the Programme! If you’ll organise it,
we will include it!
For those who are organising events, whether
stalls, or individual festival events please be
sure to let us know details by the beginning
of March.
This is important so the correct information
can go into the programme, but also because
our insurers need details of all our activities
to provide the necessary cover.
New residents may be interested in the
background to our Annual Festival. It grew
from the simple idea of providing a week in
which varied activities, chosen and staged
by local groups or individuals, could provide
a good time for all. The programme is based
upon past practice plus any new events that
anyone – either an individual or group –
would like to put on.
Anybody should feel able to put on an
event, exhibition, fund-raiser, or help by
providing a stall on Festival Saturday. It is
hoped that all village groups will help in that
important way!

tickets for this were taken up very quickly
and they will be organising another talk in
the New Year. Watch out for posters around
the village for information on when the next
talk will be.

Last July saw the College celebrating our
students’ success at the annual presentation of
awards and celebrations for the College’s 90th
year. These events were the culmination of the
hard work and commitment of our students and
also reflect the dedication and professionalism
of the team of staff at Moulton, in ensuring
each student achieves their potential. The
events allowed us to not only celebrate past
success but to look forward to the continued
success of the College.
New Reception & Registry Building that
was opened in October.
That it took our Years 5 and 6 children, and a
veritable army of parent helpers, the best part
of the rest of the morning to distribute the
produce gives you a clear insight into just how
generous our children and parents are when it
comes to this sort of thing. We really do not
know what we would do without them.
If the number of thank you letters and cards we
have had from those people who received our
Harvest gifts is anything to go by, a lot of people
were very grateful indeed.

buildings have been added to the campus, this is
a reflection of the significant investment of circa
£15 million and the foresight of the Governors.
These outstanding new facilities enable our
students to learn and practice their skills in a

Moulton Library is one of those unique places
in Moulton where people from all walks of life
and age can mix together! Over the last three
months we have welcomed over 7,500 people
into the library. Just fantastic!

Over the summer we ran our annual Summer
Reading Challenge – this year over 120 children
accepted the challenge to read 6 books over
their summer holidays. 66% of the children
completed their challenge and on Saturday 15th
September, with fabulous support from the
Friends of Moulton Library, we held a Celebration
Party. At the party 36 of the children had their
certificates and medals presented to them and
were given a gift from the Friends too! We also
ran a competition for all the finishers and Paul
was the winner. He was the Library Manager for a
few hours – all the children who visited were
given lollipops and he made sure all the staff
were on their best behaviour! Well done Paul –
you were a fabulous manager!!
One of the Senior Managers attended the event
and was very impressed with the children.

We are very excited to announce that in January
2013 we are going to run a “Winter Reading
Challenge” – this will only be at Moulton
Library! It will be open to all children 4 to 15!
Please keep a lookout for posters in early
January 2013! (This event is being supported by
“The Friends of Moulton Library”).
We have also launched two new groups for
adults. Firstly, a Reading Group for Adults now
meets on the first Monday of the month. So far
we have read “Death Comes to Pemberley” by
P D James and “A Week in December”
by Sebastian Faulks. The discussions have been
really enjoyable. The second group is a Creative
Writing Group that get together on the second
Tuesday of the month at 7pm. The group works
occasionally with the Towcester Creative
Writing Group. If you are interested in joining
either of these groups please pop into Moulton
Library for more information.
In the current economic climate Moulton Library
needs to focus on raising some extra income to
support the library. Northamptonshire County
Council is committed to funding 70% of the
costs. The remainder needs to be raised through
donations, membership to The Friends of the
Library, hire charges and the “Library Shop”. We
now sell a variety of items, from stationery, to
gifts for all ages. We also sell greetings cards and
small toys for children. Please pop in and see
what is for sale – you may just pick that special
gift for someone! All the prices are very
reasonable and every penny spent in the library
helps to keep us here in Moulton!

when it is closed? Do you need somewhere to
hold a private business meeting? Or does your
Group need somewhere to meet on a regular

The Friends of Moulton Library continue to be
busy supporting the library and local
community. During the summer holidays we
supported two activity sessions, each for 25
children, - Paint & Glaze and The Mad Scientist
– which were both very popular and the Paint
and Glaze was held again on 2nd December. In
September we held an awards afternoon for
children who had successfully completed the
summer reading scheme. 36 children attended
and as well as receiving their certificates they
were also given Moulton Library wristbands and
a Moulton Library book bag both paid for by
the Friends. Parents enjoyed tea and cakes.
Our fundraising continues apace and we
recently held the village quiz which raised just
over £200, and on 24th November we held a
very successful Christmas Fayre in the
Village Hall. The next village quiz will be in
Moulton Club on Saturday 2nd February 2013.

Library services within the county are
continually being reviewed and challenged and
it is important that local people continue to
use and support the activities going on at our
local library in order to ensure it is not
threatened with closure again in the future. If

Get the agent right, get the asking
price right!

Sellers are being warned not to risk over-pricing
during the winter market, following stark new
research. New research from Rightmove finds
that 62% of home-hunters state they will not
carry out a viewing on a property they consider
to be over-priced, even if the property ticks all
the boxes on their wish-list.
Rightmove’s research, carried out as part of its
Market Intelligence campaign, finds that only
38% of home-movers would actually go and
view a property they consider to be over-priced
before deciding whether to put in a lower offer,
even though sellers often price with a view to
negotiating downwards.
Rightmove director Miles Shipside advises “It
can be tempting for sellers to price high on the
assumption that they are giving themselves
room for negotiation. However, our findings
indicate that this can be a risky business and is
likely to deter some six in ten potential buyers
who might otherwise have visited the property
without hesitation. Price is obviously a critical
issue for both buyers and sellers in the current

Saving Lives… by Doing Something

In the Autumn Edition of the Moulton Scene
under the heading ‘Helping Hands’ and ‘Be a
Match – Save a Life’, it is a pleasure to follow on
and let readers know that in the past year in
Moulton there have been 6 blood donation
sessions from which a total of 578 donations
have been collected with 72 of these donations
coming from new donors.
In 2011 Moulton also held 6 sessions from which
a total of 575 donations were collected with 77
of these donations coming from new people.
So it is good news that we have collected more
in Moulton this year and hopefully we shall see
more donors make it a New Year resolution to
come through the door of an NHSBT session in
2013 – dates are shown to the right.
Currently, there are 427 donors on the donor
base for Moulton which is a decrease of 39.
Unfortunately we do lose 10 - 15% of our donor
base each year due to a variety of factors
however, Moulton is less than this number and
it is hoped this will encourage more donors to
come forward in 2013.
There is always an urgent need for blood donations
as it has a shelf life. Male donors can safely
donate blood 4 times every 12 months, as long as
they wait 12 weeks between donations, whilst
female donors can still donate 3 times every
12 months. This is because levels of iron must be
maintained ensuring a donor is not put at risk.
Whilst there is no demographic information
available regarding Moulton, NHSBT look to
achieve approximately 4% of each area’s eligible
population ie: those aged 17+ and who are in
general good health. It is fair to say that year on
year Moulton has done well and should be
proud of its donation record – well done!

Educational Trust
This charity has a limited income available to
help students and apprentices (under the age of
25) who live in Moulton Parish (which includes
Moulton Leys) or the old Overstone Parish.
Grants are available for fees, books, equipment,
etc., at the discretion of the Trustees.
The charity was formed in 1971 with funds
provided from the sale of land of the Moulton
Old National School. Its main purpose is the
promotion of education on a Christian basis
and the Trustees are bound to take this into
account in considering applications.

Monday Club
The Moulton Monday Club meets in The Carey
Lounge at 10am and is very popular with our
small group of elderly bereaved ladies who find
it very supportive. Most of them have spent a
lonely weekend and getting together gives
them something to look forward to and
something to get up for on a Monday. We meet
for coffee and a chat. Sometimes when we stay
in we have speakers or play bingo which is
becoming increasingly popular.

are sufficient cars, to local shops and garden

Moulton Village Car Scheme
We have had another busy time for the car
scheme, with more new clients and extra
journeys required. We have an excellent team
of drivers, who do everything they can to make
the clients’ medical trips as stress-free as
possible. However, I again appeal to any
villagers to contact me if you think that you
may be interested in helping as a driver for a
few hours a week.
We are coming up to our busiest time during
the winter and obviously I do not want to
disappoint any of our clients.

The converted two storey barn in
West Street, Moulton opened as a
contemporary art gallery in 2006. Regular
exhibitions have drawn visitors from around
Northamptonshire and further afield. Over
the past 6 years Sue Brooks, the owner and
curator of the gallery, has worked with
UK and International artists as well as
University of Northampton graduates. With
contemporary art exhibitions in the lower
and upper gallery, it has built a reputation
for quality original artwork. A question
frequently asked by visitors was ‘Has the
village got a coffee shop?”. The gallery
listened to the opinions of local residents
and visitors to the area, and in May of this
year the cafe@jgallery opened its doors for
the first time during the Moulton Festival.

The cafe is owned and run by Jeni Neil and
Anthea Butcher, who both live in the village
of Moulton. Their creative approach to
preparing freshly made sandwiches and
cakes, as well as freshly ground coffee and
speciality teas, has earned the cafe a
reputation for quality food and good value
for money as a get together in the modern
and comfortable space of an art gallery.
Now the gallery and cafe are open 6 days a
week and visitors can be sure of a
comfortable setting in which to enjoy the
home baked refreshments on offer served by
the friendly staff of cafe@jgallery.
Apart from great food, the cafe also run
children’s craft parties and cake decorating
courses and the outside catering for local
businesses is proving very popular. Jeni and
Anthea are keen to offer more local
businesses a free delivery service as well as
provide a pleasant venue for businesses/
organisations to bring staff or clients for
breakfast and lunchtime meetings.
A particular favourite with the ladies are the
afternoon teas, which make a special treat
for small groups of mums and friends. (These
need to be booked in advance). Looking
forward to 2013, with healthy options on
everyone’s mind, the cafe will be offering
low fat soups in the New Year. However, the
delicious cakes made by Jeni might just be
too much of a temptation.

What a year, as they say it’s been ideal for the
ducks, having had a lot of rainfall which in turn
gave us low light levels. It’s a wonder anything
grew, but then again whatever the weather
conditions there’s always some produce that rises
to the occasion. For instance the runner beans we
personally grew, having planted the same type as
other years, have never been as prolific or as tender
and sweet tasting as this year, and celeriac has
been exceptional. So I think we can safely say not
good conditions for gardeners but great for the
garden, especially the weeds.

This year ‘The Best Plot Holder’s Award’ for the
3rd year running was won by Mr. Michael Cheney,
who in all weathers keeps his plots immaculate,
even his grass paths stand to attention.
‘The Best Newcomer’s Plot Award’ went to
Mr and Mrs Gurr gardened by dad Patrick, who
walks a round trip of at least 3 miles in all sorts of
weather to do it. This year the competition was
judged by the Treasurer of St David’s Allotments,
Mr. Tony Paddison. Presentations will take place
at the Allotment A.G.M. in April of 2013.
Earlier in the year Mrs Erica Simmons held a little
competition to raise money for ‘The Moulton
Festival’, raising a total of £40. The aim was to
grow the tallest Walking Stick Cabbage plant by
September.

Moulton Memory Café
The Memory Café in Moulton has been going
for the last two years and has recently moved
to the Carey Baptist Church Hall in West Street.
Meetings in the last three months have been
attended by a small but strong group of people,
and we cover a large range of subjects. The
carers who attended with their partners found
the information very useful and reported back
that they had all benefited from the contacts
they made.
We had a very amusing musical quiz which was
very light-hearted and we were all amazed at
how many tunes we could actually remember
and name.
The speaker who gave us a talk on
“Power of Attorney” was well received and
the feedback from our cafe members was
also very positive.
We meet every 2nd Monday of the month at
2.00pm at the Carey Baptist Church Hall and
there is no charge to attend or to listen to our
speakers. Our next meetings are on Monday
14th January 2013, Monday 11th February 2013,
Monday 11th March 2013 and Monday 8th April
2013, and we will have speakers talking on
various related topics from time to time,
interspersed with fun activities such as quizzes
and music sessions. So why not come along
and enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of tea or
coffee with other members of your village. We

Moulton Players
This year we opened with “Calendar Girls” by
Tim Firth and directed by Maggie Holland –
what a fantastic start to our Season! This funny
and yet poignant play about the WI members
making a nude calendar was well received by all
of our audiences. A great night of entertainment
was provided by a group of experienced players
making a great evening both on and off the
stage. Congratulations to all. This was also a
first for us as we raised money for two charities,
the Leukaemia Lymphoma Research Fund and
Northampton General Hospital.
Following this, “A Lady In The Van” by Alan
Bennett and directed by Alice Fletcher is our
May production 6th – 11th May.

A traditional pantomime which can be enjoyed

In the New Year (4th – 9th March), come and
see “Murdered To Death” by Peter Gordon.
This hilarious play set in a country manor house
in the 1930’s introduces the inept Inspector
Pratt, who tries to solve the murder of the
house’s owner. It soon becomes clear that the
murderer isn’t finished yet, but will the
miscreant be unmasked before everyone else is
dead or will the audience die laughing first?
Moulton Youth Theatre group meets every
Monday from 7pm to 8.30pm at Moulton
Theatre in Cross Street, Moulton. The aim of
the theatre group is to encourage young people
from the age of 13 to 18 to develop their acting
skills, and also develop a positive approach to
self awareness, and to build individual
confidences, as well as building social skills
through team work and commitment.
Lamda trained Lee Winston, with support from
Jayne Jones, and the Moulton Theatre Chairman
Jill White, will help individuals develop and
improve acting skills. So if you’ve never acted
before, or you want to develop existing skills, then
why not come along to join this exciting project.

We are at present rehearsing for a play we will
be staging in July 2013 called ‘The Creature
Creeps’ and, although parts have been cast, we
welcome new members to play an important
part in ensuring the success of the group.

Moulton Afternoon WI
We can reflect on 2012 as an eventful year both
as members of the WI and nationally. The
Queen’s Jubilee brought joy and respect for her
long reign. The Olympics were truly inspiring.
By the time this report goes to print, we will
have held our last event of the year with our
Christmas Carol Service and trust that our new
Vicar will see it as “the beginning of Christmas”
just as his predecessor always said.
Our programme of speakers for 2013 looks very
promising – a task completed by Eileen Allen
for some years now.
As we look forward to celebrating our 83rd
birthday in March, perhaps you would care to look
in the What’s On Diary and pay us a visit or

Moulton Evening WI
We held an antiques valuation day in October
and although the attendance was disappointing,
several items were forwarded for auction, who
knows we may have discovered a valuable
masterpiece!
We enjoyed a very informative evening with
Ernie the fastest milk bike in the West
from SERV describing the work of the
volunteer bikers who provide an essential out
of hours service to deliver and collect vital
transplant organs, donor baby milk and
blood products.
Our darts team has recently reformed and is
competing in the County WI darts tournament,
we are hoping to emulate our past successes in
this competition.
Moulton Evening WI is always pleased to
welcome new members, why not join us at our
January meeting on Tuesday 8th January at
Moulton Village Hall at 7.45pm for a talk by Susan
Jackson on Collecting Family stories. The
February meeting will be our birthday dinner
which is being held at the Mandarin Buffet
at Weston Favell and in March we are
delighted to have a return visit from
Liam D’Arcy-Brown speaking on Chusan,
The Opium Wars. At the April meeting
Polly Feeley will be getting us to relive our youth

Society
We start the new year for the Gardeners Society
on the back of a very successful 2012. We had
the highest membership for many years with
excellent attendance and involvement in the
various Society’s activities.
Due to additional events added to the already
busy programme, we have managed to increase
the funding for the Society, which will allow us
to continue to maintain the membership

The General Meetings are always held on the
4th Wednesday of the month and held in
the Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.
The Society’s Annual Dinner is being held again
at the Northampton College, Booth Lane on
the 14th March. This has been very welcomed
after the enjoyable evening we experienced
there last year. The food was excellent and all
prepared and served by the young trainee
students in the comfortable environment of
the college dining hall.
We are arranging our Race Night evening again
on the 19th April, after all the fun we had with
the previous event. It‘s nothing serious and
everybody gets really excited and into the spirit
of the event, while watching the videos of the
horse races.
This evening’s entertainment is also opened to
the general public, so if you feel like joining us
on the evening, posters will be around the
village during early April.
Please come along and join in with this
friendly and vibrant Society, we are still open
for new membership.
As stated the
membership costs have been held at a
competitive £10.00 for a year’s subscription. If
you just want to come and sample an evening,
feel free, you would always be very welcome.

I had intended to submit an article based on
information taken from the Moulton Censuses,
but I haven’t given myself enough time to
complete it. Instead, I reprint an article that
appeared in the 1968 Moulton Sceneundoubtedly written by Bob Eady. It concerns
the steam-mill that once stood in the grounds
of the Mill House at the bottom of Chater St.
Moulton Through the Ages – no 7
ANY GRISSES FOR THE MILL, MA-AM?
This sub-title was undoubtedly one of the cries
of old Moulton at the turn of the century,
(19th/20th century) and was uttered by one
Perry York, whose job it was to collect grain, or
“grist” for grinding at the mill. It was usual in
those days for the villagers to grow corn in their
small holdings to provide feed for both
themselves and for the pigs which they
invariably kept.
I was listening the other afternoon to those two
well-known Moulton personalities, Bill and
Ned Busby reminiscing of the days when they
used to help their father in the mill.
William Herbert Busby came from Old in 1885
and established himself as miller and corn
merchant at Mill House in Chater Street. The
mill was equipped with one pair of stones for
grinding wheat, and pair for barley. The stones
were belt driven from a vertical steam engine
which was supplied with steam from a
horizontal coal fired boiler. The coal, by the
way, came from Chapel Brampton sidings on a
cash and carry basis at 5/per ton.
In addition to grinding corn for the farmers
around, Mr Busby often used to grind gleanings
which women and children had gathered from
the cornfields after the harvest had been
carried, although this was mostly used for
feeding poultry. The steam engine served to
drive a circular saw, a chaff cutter, bean splitter
and an oat crusher.
One of Ned Busby’s jobs was to assist his father
in dressing the millstones, a job which had to be
done frequently and skilfully. Bill Busby used to
tackle the boiler when the inspector was due,
and the procedure was to remove the ‘mud
plug’ and drain out the sludge water in order to
clean out the water jacket and boiler flues.
After the First World War, most farmers started
to grind their own corn with small petrol
engined mills which were then available, and
the steam mill gradually fell out of use, finally
being closed down in 1927. The chimney was
discovered some years later to be in an unsafe
condition and felled, although the mill building
itself still stands. (not now).

mill, ma’am.
Mr & Mrs R Dickens, who once lived in Mill House,
have preserved the bottom part of the mill chimney
in their garden which stands on the old mill site –
as shown in the photo below. Does anyone have a
photo of the mill-derelict or not, please?

couple of years or so ago. I had an arrangement
whereby I would spend a couple of hours with
him and Jean talking about Moulton history in
an attempt to add to our village archives. He

Moulton Keep Fit
Our Charity Coffee Morning in June this year
enabled us to make donations to the Salvation
Army and Moulton hanging baskets. Once
again, a big thank you to all Moultonians for
attending and donating home-made jams,
cakes, prizes etc. We couldn’t do it without
your support.
A busy summer for Keep Fitters has now found us
back from our Tinsel & Turkey holiday in Ilfracombe.
The big news in Ilfracombe concerns the Damien
Hirst 66ft bronze artwork ‘Verity’ statue at the
harbour, which is hoped to regenerate the town.
Mixed views from those of us that saw it – ‘Is
that what they call art?’ ‘Not too bad from one
side’. Other comments were unprintable.
Entertainment at the hotel provided enjoyable
evenings including a male voice choir with the
conductor acting out the Twelve Days of
Christmas hilariously.
When Christmas is over we will be looking
forward to a Winter Warmer in February at
Bournemouth. You do not have to be a member
to join us. Just speak to any member for details
– the coach picks up in the village. No getting
into town - a big bonus. Why not join us?

Moulton Girl Guides
On Saturday 17th November, Moulton Guides,
Brownies and Guiders held a triple celebration
at their Hall in Barlow Lane, being delighted
to welcome distinguished guests and
representatives from the Guiding movement
across Northamptonshire.
In the Autumn edition of Moulton Scene we
announced that a major refurbishment of the
Girl Guide Hall – built 40 years ago – was
underway, and we paid tribute to our partners
who provided funds or help in kind, and who
carried out the series of works.
Firstly, however, we marked HM the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee with the planting of an English
Oak Tree in our car park opposite the Hall. Lady
Juliet Townsend kindly performed the honours
as President of Girlguiding Northamptonshire.
Special thanks for this are owed to: the Waitrose
Community Foundation who are funding trees to
mark their own 75th anniversary; and Moulton
College who planted the tree for us.
Secondly, we formally reopened the Hall and
thanked all concerned for their contributions.
We welcomed not least the upgraded w.c.
facilities now with disabled access which enables
us to be inclusive, plus a vastly improved and
equipped kitchen.
Thirdly, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of
our Hall with the cutting of a large, suitably
decorated cake by Betty Barlow, Mid Divisional
President, and a splendid tea provided by the
Trefoil Guild. We were pleased to invite both
representatives of our regular Hall users and the
Hall’s immediate neighbours.
Chris Heaton Harris, MP for Daventry, made an
entertaining speech, pointing out that we were
unusually fortunate to have two MPs present at
our event, i.e. Michael Ellis also, since the
Kingsthorpe branch of Waitrose falls within the
Northampton North constituency. The Chairman
of Daventry District Council, Councillor Diana
Osborne was also present with her husband.

The club was delighted to be named as the FA
Charter Standard Community Club of the Year
for 2012 for the EAST MIDLANDS REGION.
The Club has been awarded the EAST

for the second time in three years. The award

Charter Standard Community Club status, one
of only seven FA Community Clubs in the

We have just had a busy time with a grading in
October, more members working their way
towards Black Belt. Congratulations to
Leanne Pearce and Phoebe Dickinson for
both successfully passing their Black Belt
grading this year. Also club members were
very successful at recent tournaments. Our
own tournament at Moulton on the
17th November was exceptionally well
attended (see photo), so if you want to give
TaeKwon-Do a go just turn up for a free
introductory lesson at Moulton Primary
School. Classes are held on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings, 7pm to 8pm (Juniors
6yrs to 11yrs), 8pm to 9pm (Adults). Parents

of us at the Parish
Church hope 2013
will be a very
happy and blessed
year for you all.
Many will no
doubt be taking the chance to make New
Year’s resolutions for the year ahead. Whether
it’s gym membership or learning Chinese it’s
often a time of year when we love to turn
over a new leaf and that’s often a very
good thing. Trouble is, if you’re anything like
me, you’ll find that by February 1st or
even earlier even the best laid plans
have come unstuck and we’re struggling
to remember what our new commitments
even were.
It’s a great relief to find in the Bible that rather
than trying to better ourselves, the God who
made us wants to do all the hard work for us.
In Psalm 51, King David was very aware of his
moral shortcomings, having just stumbled
morally in several horrible ways. He woke up
and longed to change. Instead of trying to
simply turn over a new leaf, however, he
prayed these words.
Hide your face from my sins and blot out
all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart,
O God.
Wonderfully, the cross of Jesus means God
answered David’s prayer.
On that day
God did hide His face from all that was
wrong in David’s life. He sent His powerful
Spirit into David’s heart to change it
from within.
Can I encourage all of us this New Year, as well
as making our own resolutions to change,
to ask God to make a far deeper and more
lasting change in us? Why not come along to
Christianity Explored on 21st January to find
out more. We’d love to help you grapple with
David’s prayer and what it means.

A NOTE FOR YOUR DIARY...
On Saturday 6th April at 7.30pm there will
be an evening of Classical Music in
the Church. Included will be songs from
the Opera by Rachel Wild and friends, and
piano music by Alex Kirk. Money raised
will be shared between “Time for Change”
and the NSPCC. Tickets will be available
in due course.
Carey Baptist Church
Following the visit of the three delightful girls
from America earlier in the year we really felt
a buzz around the church. The girls’ enthusiasm
and pleasure in all they took part in was
infectious and we thank them for coming and
continue to remember them. Thankfully they
were not affected by Hurricane Sandy in
November but as a church we do pray for our
American brothers and sisters in the aftermath
of this disaster.
We thank God for the exciting times we are
experiencing here at Carey. Each week a group
meet together on Wednesday mornings for a
time of prayer. This brings before God the
issues within the fellowship both individually
and as an organisation or the church as a

concerns which are many in this troubled
world. As a church we are excited to be seeing
answers to these prayers with growing numbers
coming to worship on Sundays, more young
people joining the Brigades and little ones
coming with their Mums to Toddle Inn as well
as many ladies coming to Women’s Own where
they find a warm fellowship. We have been
delighted to welcome families as they bring
their babies and little children to church to
give thanks for God for the gift of young life
and to dedicate themselves to bring up the
children in a Christian way. In addition we are
thrilled to have more people inquiring about
the Christian life especially following the
Alpha Course recently run, and in some cases
making a commitment to follow Christ through
the waters of baptism. We feel this is an
answer to prayers and is in Gods’ own time.
We pray God will bless you and your family
during the coming year and encourage you
perhaps to come along to Carey and see for
yourselves why we are so excited about the
Christian life.

Berit Lauder sadly passed away recently. She
came to Northamptonshire from Sweden to
work as an ‘au pair’ in the ’60s. She met Ian
Lauder at the Salon and they married in
1966, moving to Moulton in the ’70s. They
have two grown-up children, Alistair and
Sofia. Berit will be much missed by her
family and friends.
Jean Rogers died on her birthday, 9th
November. A staunch member of Carey
Baptist Church, Jean taught in Junior Church
and worked as a door steward. She took part
in a home discussion group, Wednesday
morning prayer group and the Women’s
Own – a loyal and unassuming member.
She came to Moulton from Harrow in
the ’70s after the death of her parents,
to be near her sister Ann and family.
While in Harrow, she was involved in the
Girl Guide movement and was Brown Owl
in a Brownie pack for many years and also
taught in Sunday School there. She had
trained as a nursery nurse and worked as a
nanny and a school matron – children
were always important in her life. Her
memory will live on in the life of her
church and in the hearts of everyone who
knew her.
Peter Keen passed away very suddenly in
October. The family moved here from
Newcastle in 1987 and Peter had ran
Village Autos in the centre of Moulton for
the past 22 years. Peter liked to help
people in the community and was generous
with the premises for village causes.
He was a devoted family man – the family
was central to his life.
He will be
greatly missed by family and friends and
especially by his wife Beryl, son Paul,
daughter Jane and grandchildren Kieran
and Hannah.
