Green signifies a good matchup, red a bad matchup and white an average matchup. http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/2013/nfl-game-previews.cfm?week=7 Inside Week 7 with Ian Ritchie Every week, our fearless leader recaps the action that was in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns decided to put the brakes on Chris Ogbonnaya and gave Fozzy Whitaker a try. Do you think growing up, people called him “The Foz”? Big Happy Days Fan. Whenever I heard Jarrett Boykin’s name, I always pictured Earl Boykins, the small point guard in the NBA. I guess that is why I thought Jarrett Boykin was a small guy and never gave him a chance. He is bigger and better than I thought. Chris Ivory looked a lot like Marshawn Lynch this weekend, the hair is just a bonus. He kept Bilal Powell on the bench and showed if you run violently and with a passion, you can be a productive NFL back. I shoulda listened to my buddy Yoda on this one. He called Ivory over Powell starting Week 7. Nick Foles (concussion) remained sidelined at practice Wednesday. Steven Jackson returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis James Jones (knee) remained sidelined at practice Wednesday. DeMarco Murray (knee) is getting some limited work in during Wednesday's practice. • C.J. Spiller (ankle) is not practicing Wednesday. • Fred Jackson (knee) is not practicing Wednesday. • Danny Amendola (concussion) is practicing Wednesday. This Week’s Fantasy Headlines Patriots WR Danny Amendola practices, RB Shane Vereen close to return The BoxScore: Vereen will retake his old job from Brandon Bolden once he returns, so there isn't much to worry about there. If Vereen is available, add him right now. As for Amendola, at this point it would be a welcome sight for him to just string together a few games without getting hurt again, let alone post big numbers. Amendola can perform like a more-than-capable WR2 if healthy in this offense, unfortunately, he's been testing that if far too often. Only start him if you have no other obvious options, preferably in PPR formats. Saints TE Jimmy Graham may miss Week 8 The BoxScore: Graham is a must-start as long as he plays. The offense revolves around him, as is evidenced by taking a quick look at his dominating game log numbers. He scored six TDs in the first four weeks of the season and added four 100-yard games out of his first five games. If he does miss time, Ben Watson is his backup and might be worth a look if you're in serious need of a TE. Jaguars stick with QB Chad Henne over QB Blaine Gabbert The BoxScore: If you own Justin Blackmon and/or Cecil Shorts , this is good news. The Jags are the league's top doormat and the only 0-7 team in the league. This does lead to a lot of garbage time though and that's when Blackmon and Shorts can shine. Thinking long-term though, the Jags will have to wait until the 2014 NFL Draft to potentially find a new quarterback. It could be Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, or maybe even Marcus Mariota. In any case, Henne has yet to throw multiple TDs in a single game so he has no business being on anyone's roster. Weeden Benched! Browns finally give QB Jason Campbell a chance The BoxScore: Now 31 years old, the Browns would love just a turnover-free, efficient game from their quarterback and that's really the most we can expect from Campbell. We've all seen him a number of times and sure, maybe the Redskins should've gave up on him one year too soon, but Campbell has never been a dynamic passer or the guy who can take a game over singlehandedly. Don't waste your waiver priority on him either; he doesn't even qualify as a QB2 this week. Vikings QB Josh Freeman concussed, QB Christian Ponder to start The BoxScore: Steer clear of this quarterback situation if you can. There's no reason to waste a roster spot on Freeman or Ponder. Neither one is capable and amount to nothing more than band-aids until they're ripped off and disposed of heading into the draft. Harsh words, but this is what the game is all about. Ponder had his shot and so did Freeman. Ponder has one year left on his deal and Freeman only signed a one-year deal with Minnesota. Hindsight is always 20/20 but most of us were all very surprised when the Vikings drafted Ponder with the No. 12 pick in the 2011 draft. By the way, look back at that draft's Top 15 picks. You really had to go out your way to mess that up. Rams sign two QBs to compete for Sam Bradford's job The BoxScore: The pickings are obviously slim among NFL free agents and good luck to all of them. I've watched Hard Knocks and have an appreciation for whoever wins the job will have earned it. Roster spots don't come by easily. What's most intruiging about this is that Bradford has two years left on his deal which will net him $27 million. This contract was obviously signed before the lockout so the Rams' options are limited. They can't cut him without dumping a ton of dead money into their future and obviously you'd rather keep the decent QB as opposed to rolling the dice in the draft again. Sure, you might get another Andrew Luck or you can end up with another Christian Ponder. Whoever wins this QB race though probably isn't worth much to fantasy owners. Clemens hasn't shown anything over the years and obviously the same goes for Quinn and Davis. Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts thinks he'll play The BoxScore: Shorts played last week against San Diego with the same injury and came out of it relatively unscathed and no worse for wear. This week against the 49ers might be a different story, at least when considering the matchup. San Francisco eighth best defense in the league and allowing the 10th-fewest fantasy points to WRs so they're slightly above-average. Points might be difficult to come by since the 49ers have only allowed two WR TDs in their last six contests. If Shorts plays, he remains a good WR2, especially with all that garbage time available to him. If he doesn't play, look for Justin Blackmon to see about 20 targets (slight exaggeration, but I wouldn't be surprised). Bills head coach actively limiting RB C.J. Spiller's playing time The BoxScore: Spiller was a first-round lock during the preseason but has been a serious disappointment due to his dwindling playing time and an excellent first half of the season from Fred Jackson . Buying low on Spiller might not be a bad strategy considering Jackson's injury history. The former Clemson back carries with him a significant amount of risk though as he has shown very little thus far. Teams still throwing trade offers at Cleveland for WR Josh Gordon The BoxScore: I'm not sure what the Browns are expecting back. Are they holding out for a first-round or second-round pick? It seems like a second rounder would be a pretty good offer, but I'm no NFL GM. A few playoff-bound teams could certainly use a push in the passing game. The Colts just lost Reggie Wayne for the season. San Francisco only hasAnquan Boldin under contract for one more season and who knows how much longer he'll play anyway. Green Bay doesn't "need" a WR, but they're battling with injuries. He could go anywhere and help anybody as far as I'm concerned. Gordon is a top dynasty player and his value would skyrocket if he landed in a real offense. Packers TE Jermichael Finley out indefinitely with bruised spinal cord The BoxScore: This definitely looks like the end of Finley's season and there are careerending implications. Fantasy owners should absolutely begin looking immediately for replacements. The Packers will fall back on Andrew Quarless, who only has four receptions for 28 yards this year. Green Bay is already paper-thin at receiver, after having lost Randall Cobb to injured reserve and James Jones looking questionable for Week 8. This injury only puts more pressure on younger players likeJarrett Boykin . Eagles QB Michael Vick to start Week 8 The BoxScore: Don't sell those Nick Foles rookie cards just yet. It's possible Vick has a bad week and pushes Foles back into the starting lineup. On the other hand, it's also possible Vick has a huge game and secures his old job. The odd man out is of course Matt Barkleyand his name isn't even in the discussion. Vick is a low QB1 against the just-won-but-still-pretty-bad Giants. The only risk with Vick, like usual, is the risk of re-injury. Bucs RB Doug Martin in a sling with shoulder problem, could be out Week 8 and beyond The BoxScore: Martin had to step out in the third quarter of Tampa's eventual loss to Atlanta. Initial X-rays came back negative, but the Bucs are doing their due diligence to pinpoint the injury. Backup rookie RBMike James was forced into action and toted the rock 14 times for 45 yards. Martin owners should consider finding an emergency backup, maybe even James, since even if Martin does play, one solid hit on his shoulder could end his day abruptly. Tampa hosts Carolina in Week 8. Texans RB Arian Foster pulls hamstring, RB Ben Tate battling rib injury The BoxScore: Arian Foster expects to be ready against the Colts in two weeks following Houston’s bye week. Tate told the Associated Press he has four broken ribs. We’ll monitor this one after the bye week. Colts WR Reggie Wayne done with torn ACL The BoxScore: Hilton is now the go-to receiver for Andrew Luck. If there was ever a time to make a trade or call up a diamond in the rough from the practice squad, this would be it. The Colts only have LaVon Brazill and David Reed available on their receiver depth chart. Neither player has made any significant contributions during their few years in the league. Indy's passing attack was already having some problems. They are ranked 24th in passing yards per game (215.4). In terms of fantasy points scored per game by their WRs, they're mediocre at best, ranking 17th in the league with 20.7 FP/g. Nascar Picks for Martinsville After a somewhat benign trip to Talladega last weekend, things should get back to normal this weekend when the Cup Series heads back to Martinsville Speedway. Our expert ranks the Drivers for the big race in Martinsville 1. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A] Johnson is the defending winner of this weekend's race, and he is also going for a season sweep at the track after winning the spring race. Meanwhile, he is a eight-time winner at the track for his career, and he has only finished outside the top 10 in three of his 23 starts. Not to mention that in the last 20 races at the track, Johnson has a series-leading 3.7 average finish and has 16 top-five finishes during the stretch. 2. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A] Although his last win at Martinsville came in 2005, Gordon has remained incredibly consistent at the track. He has a 5.0 average finish in the last 20 races at the track and has 18 top-10s during the stretch. For his career, Gordon has seven wins at Martinsville to go along with 33 top-10s in 41 starts. 3. Kyle Busch, #18 Mars Brands/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B] Flat tracks like Martinsville used to give Busch a bit of a problem, but he has more than conquered those demons. In fact, he finished second at Martinsville last fall and fifth earlier this year, giving Busch four top-five finishes in his last six starts at the paperclip-shaped track. Expect Busch to have a car capable of winning this weekend. 4. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance/Quaker State, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A] Hendrick Motorsports has excelled at Martinsville over the years; and not surprisingly, Kahne has become an excellent option at the track since joining the organization. He finished third at Martinsville last fall, and earlier this year he logged a fourth-place finish. Like his teammates that top this week's rankings, Kahne deserves to be considered a top-five option for Sunday's race. 5. Clint Bowyer, #15 5-Hour Energy, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A] Joining Michael Waltrip Racing has transformed Bowyer from a solid Martinsville performer into a great one. He has finished in the top 10 in all three starts at the track with MWR, compiling a 5.7 average finish. Bowyer has also finished in the top five in his last two Martinsville starts, including a second-place run earlier this year. At this point, a trip to victory lane seems likely in the near future.
