after martin luther posted his 95 theses on the church door at Wittenberg
in 1517, the reformation came to affect all aspects of life and society. its
impact was due in no small part to the protestant princes who championed
luther‘s teachings.
the renaissance town of torgau on the river elbe, with hartenfels castle at
its centre, was the political hub of the reformation. martin luther preached
there and consecrated the first building specifically designed as a protestant
place of worship - the schlosskapelle or castle chapel. as the former seat
of the saxon electors, torgau provides an authentic setting for the first

› Dahl and Friedrich – Romantic Landscapes
Caspar David Friedrich (1774 –1840) and Johan Christian Dahl (1788 –1857) are
considered the two main exponents of Nordic landscape painting in the Romantic
period. Dresden was fertile ground for these two innovators to develop their talent.
The exhibition is a joint project organised by the National Museum Oslo and the
Dresden State Art Collections.

Bicentenary of Ferdinand Adolph Lange
France, Great Britain and the Romandie were the main centres of clock and watch
making in the 18th and early 19th century. The decisive technical innovations that
made the clock into a precision timepiece emanated from Paris and London. Ferdinand
Adolph Lange introduced the standards of international horology to Saxony and
made the name of Glashütte, a small town in the eastern Erzgebirge, into a worldrenowned brand.

has created a panorama of Dresden city centre as it looked after the devastating air
raids of 1945. It is intended to serve as a symbol for all German and European cities
destroyed during World War II and as an example of the efforts that went into recon­s­truction and of the will to survive.

As always, the Saxon Steamship Company starts its summer season with a fleet
review in May. With loud blasts on their horns, all nine historical paddle steamers
and the two modern cruise boats set sail for Pillnitz. Here, they make a spectacular
turn in the river for the return leg of the parade. The Dresden paddle steamer fleet
is documented as the largest and oldest in the world. The historic ships were built
during the period 1879 to 1929 and now have listed status.
