Flower Show- The Moribana Garden Club
was founded in 1974 by a small group of
people to share their interests in
gardening, flowers and arranging and to
promote public interest in the beautification
of Wytheville. Moribana Garden Club has
sponsored a flower show at the Chautauqua
Festival from the very beginning and will
sponsor the 30th Garden show this year on
the first weekend of Chautauqua in the old
community building. There will be a
workshop on Friday between 10:00 until
1:00. Members will be available to help
participants arrange flowers that will be
entered in the competition. Please bring
containers, clippers and any flowers that you
have available. There is a $10.00 fee for the
workshop and some flowers will be
provided. Entries of arrangements and
specimen flowers can be brought on Friday
evening between 5:00 and 7:00. The flower
show opens on Saturday at 12:00 and will be
open through Monday. Be among the first
to view the dazzling table settings bursting
with ideas and inspiration. Please bring
arrangements and specimens to be
judged. For any questions call 276-2284545.

To hear it, you might think you just stepped into
Motown. To breathe it, you smell a tropical breeze. To
feel it, you let the rhythm grasp your body and whirl it
into motion. To see it, is like an extravaganza of light
and energy. But to experience it, you must say it ….

Chautauqua: (pronounced sha tauk’ wa)… of Seneca Indian origin; a name of a place, variously represented as titles in early (chiefly French) writings and maps… literal meaning = “one has
take out fish there…”
… which may account for the relationship to Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York. Chautauqua, NY Is the site of the educational assembly started in 1874 and is still in existence
today.
In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua movement became a popular form of adult education and entertainment in the United Sates. Using noted lyceum speakers (such as Teddy
Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan) and local talent, the movement literally spread throughout the country, traveling in caravans and setting up their tent performances in towns with
primary access to the railroad.
In the 1920’s; Wytheville, VA was a stop on the Chautauqua circuit, reportedly known as the “Redpath Circuit” which ran perpendicular to the “White & Meyer Circuit” that crossed the
rural Midwestern United States, where Chautauqua was particularly popular.
The Chautauqua lectures, musical feathers, dramatic arts and children’s activities rose in popularity during the 1920’s, followed by its demise, brought on by the Great Depression and the
rise of the film industry.
In 1985, the Chautauqua Festival was rejuvenated in the southwest VA community of Wytheville, and has been a source of entertainment, enjoyment and education again over the past
twenty eight years.

Big Country Bluegrass delivers their own hard driving and
heartfelt style of bluegrass music, and it makes them crowd
favorites wherever they perform. Whether it's at a festival in
Missouri, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, or at a small
intimate concert in their hometown of Independence, Virginia,
the band brings back memories reminiscent of the early days
of bluegrass music. Country Bluegrass

The award winning singer/songwriter has been described by some of today's
most credible artists, including Adele, Sheryl Crow, Luke Bryan and Vince
Gill, as the best voice in Nashville, and that whiskey-soaked sound with its
punch-you-in-the-gut soul, is the standout focus of his first studio album for
Mercury Records. With a wide variety of personal influences ranging from
traditional country and bluegrass to rock and roll and blues, Stapleton has
had a diverse singing career since his arrival in Nashville that includes stints
as lead vocalist for GRAMMY nominated bluegrass band The Steel Drivers
and lead vocalist in the howling rock and roll band The Jompson Brothers.
In Stapleton's own words he describes "my life has been one tucked neatly in
the liner notes of other people's albums as a writer, musician or band
member…until now." The lead single "What Are You Listening To” off his
debut Mercury Records album was produced by Tony Brown and is currently
spinning on country radio.

for mixing and matching disparate
stylistic shapes and textures. With an
unaffected take on vital American
music and a voice that channels the
spirit of Little Richard and James

Not to risk inadvertent oversights, the Wythe Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks to all
who contributed toward the success of Chautauqua Festival-in-the-Park.
We know that this festival would not be possible without countless volunteer hours. It is estimated that
approximately 1,000 volunteers support the activities leading up to and carried throughout the festival.
Thanks, as well, are due for the unending gifts-in-kind. These types of gifts are abundant in quantity, invaluable in
quality, and often so behind-the-scenes that they can be overlooked. They never seem to be motivated by
recognition, yet without them, the show could never go on!
Finally, we dedicate this endeavor to our local and visiting festival-goers. Enjoy the 30th annual Chautauqua
Festival!!
