Installationsdate
2016-08-28
Upgrading from Linux Mint 17-18 is that possible?
No! There are too large differences so you must do a fresh installation of Linux Mint 18.
Linux Mint what is it?
Linux Mint is a Debian, Ubuntu (LTS) based distribution which aims to provide a more complete
pre-packed experience with everything fully installed, coming from Ireland, and has the following
desktops Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, and Xfce. If you have a slower computer, I recommend you
install the iso file with the Xfce desktop.
List of some standard packages that are pre-installed, see Appendix 1.
Much more is to install via the Synaptic Package Manager, Package Installer Gdebi, Application
mintInstall and Software Sources!

Do you have the right computer?
I've tried to install Linux on desktop and laptop computers, with successful results.
Tablet, etc.: Generally, the most common Linux distributions are not adapted for touch screens (for
example, the buttons for minimizing, maximizing, and shutdown in a window too small to tap with
your finger). However, there are drivers for touch screens. If you try to install linux on your tablet
or SBC, you have to to check yourself if any Linux distribution supports your platform. For
example Raspberry Pi 2 Model B Processor: ARM Cortex-A7. Maybe Raspbmc or pidora fit, I have
not tried myself.
Windows 8: Do you have a Windows 8 computer, you must from Windows 8 change the UEFI
3
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
Firmware Settings to access the Boot Options and set SECURE BOOT to off, and set the Legacy
Boot on in BIOS before changing the hard disk. Use the same method as when you want to switch
from Windows 8 to Windows 7. See this link or any other description of how to do it:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417361,00.asp
If you want to switch back to Windows 8 set UEFI SECURE BOOT.
Windows 7: or earlier versions.
You have a computer that is whole, and not too old, that is from 2005 or later. I recommend dual
core processor type or better. If you are going to play more advanced games, the computer should
have a better graphics card / GPU. You have a working network connection. You have a working email account using the e-mail address, password, and possibly details of incoming and outgoing
mail servers. You have a webcam built in or connected via USB eg Logitec USB Webcam HD
Webcam C270.
You can use e-mail, Facebook, Skype, both on your tablet, mobile phone and this Linux computer.
My recommendation is to install these applications and logins even on this computer.
You have a new hard drive or solid state drive with the same connector found on the motherboard of
the computer, it's either SATA or IDE.
If you have a desktop computer and can see these SATA connectors on the motherboard then you
should use a SATA disk.
4
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
If the contacts on your existing hard drive looks like the top, get a IDE disk. If the contacts on your
existing hard drive looks like the bottom, use a SATA disk.
If you are installing on a laptop, the contacts on your hard disk will look like below.

Programs I want to use
How do I configure the computer for it to be able to replace my current Windows computer?
See Appendix 2: Program I want to use.
Preparations
Save your personal settings from your windows computer/harddisk.
Save the data, that is: Your documents, photos, music, movies, your own e-mail address with
password, and user names and passwords to the other programs and certain programs from your
Windows computer to USB memory. Have the installation CDs with the Windows programs you
want to use on this Linux computer ready.
You can check the https://appdb.winehq.org/ if the program works well or not at all during the
wine. When you get to the website, click on "Browse apps" to the right. Enter the program name, eg
"Quake III" in the box for Active Filters Name. Then click on "Update" filter. Quake III: Team
Arena or Arena shows. This displays the info page with the Platinum Rating. This means that
everything should work in the program.
32-bit or 64-bit processor.
Check if your processor is type 32-bit or 64-bit. In most cases, Intel or AMD processor in 64-bit
architecture.
To do so in Windows to check the processor architecture you have:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information
Locate System Type. If the value column contains "x86" it is a 32-bit processor, "X64" so it is a 64bit processor. In my case it looks like this: "System Type x64-based PC"
6
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
Installation Medium
My System is of Type x64-based PC, then I have a 64-bit processor and will download an image of
type 64-bit that works for both AMD and Intel 64-bit processors. If the test above provides a 32-bit
processor, you should download an image of type 32-bit. Links to the download pages for the
various distributions available on http://distrowatch.com and Linux Mint is the
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

I choose to download Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" - Cinnamon 64-bit.
It will open a download window for Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64bit.iso, I click the Save file and
click OK, the file is downloaded. In your case, download the latest version and for making the
installation media.

I burn the file linuxmint-18-cinnamon-64bit.iso on DVD and also writes it to a USB stick.
If you do not have a DVD burner or do not know how to do it, ask a friend to do this.
Alternatively, you can make a bootable USB memory with Linux Mint.
See Appendix 3: How to make a bootable USB stick.
My computer
My computer, that I want to install Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit on, is a low budget computer
that I built myself. It has the following components: AMD A4 processor, GA-F2A88XM-H3
motherboard, 8GB of DDR3 memory and a Samsung 250 GB SSD drive. Cost just under 3000
SEK.
9
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
Install Linux Mint 18
If you have a new SSD hard drive you want to install Linux Mint on, which I recommend, remove
the old windows hard drive, and install the new SSD hard drive. The advantage of this method is
that you can very easily get back your old Windows computer, by reinstalling your old windows
disk and restart your computer! It is also possible to install and overwrite Linux on your Windows
hard drive, provided that your hard drive is fully working.
Ensure that the boot order in BIOS is the CD-ROM / USB first. Start your computer and insert the
Linux Mint DVD / USB memory. You may need to press F8 or F12 quickly several times to get to a
boot menu where you can choose your installation media USB or DVD. If you don't get the boot
menu, restart the computer and try again. Make sure your computer is connected to the network.
When the computer boots up from the DVD / USB the following display is shown:
Hit Enter to start Linux Mint 18.
10
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
During the start-up this screen is displayed. It's a "live" distribution that you can try out without
installing it on your hard drive.
When the startup is complete, this screen is shown, double click on Install Linux Mint.

I choose the Swedish language here and press Continue. You select your language here. Note !!! it is
very important to select the language here, because it sets the language for the entire installation, it
can not be changed later.
If you want to install drivers for video cards, etc. select the check box here, and press Continue. But
you can do it later, so I do not select the check box. I press Continue.

Office Package:
LibreOffice is pre-installed, LibreOffice Writer can export to pdf and most MS Office formats.
LibreOffice Calc can read and export to MS Excel. Menus and spelling in Swedish. In your case it
will be the language you chose, GOOD!
Browser:
Mozilla Firefox is preinstalled, Chromium (Open Source Edition of Google Chrome) is available
for installation. I installed it.
Bank-ID
I have seen and heard from multiple sources that Mobile Bank-ID works well on Linux Mint! I'll
order and try it. I will report how to install and use it.
I found out at a bank's website that support for the BANK ID on Linux ceased in 2014, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SwedishTeam/Support/E-legitimation
I'll try if it is possible to install the Bank ID on file under Wine, that was quite some time ago
someone tried under Wine, and there is no new information on this on WineHQ.
PDF reader:
Xreader is preinstalled. Works ok on PDF files. PDF files are opened by default with Xreader. I will
also try to install Adobe Reader DC under Wine. May be required to fill in forms from the Tax
Agency.
Printer drivers:
HP Officejet 7000 E809a, HP LaserJet 5L, HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 and the Brother MFC-410CN was
easy to set up and working properly. However, not all status messages and commands.
In your case, try to install your own printer. Menu → Administration → Printers, click the "+ Add"
etc. If you have a network printer that is connected to your home LAN, click and search for it.
Directly connected printers will appear in the list of devices, add it and select the driver for it.
Scanner:
I have several scanners: Canon CanoScan N650U and it is listed as "" complete ", the Canon
CanoScan LiDE 220 is listed as complete and it is listed as" complete "and the third is a Packard
Bell Diamond 1200 Plus, and it is listed as "supported", it is the same as the MUSTEK BearPaw
scanner. Simple image scanning was already installed. I install and xsane and gscan2pdf via
Program, where I searched for "scanner".
I connect the Canon CanoScan N650U scanner and test programs, they work directly!
I connect the Canon CanoScan LiDE 220 purchased in 2016, works right, the buttons on the scanner
does not work!
I connect Packard Bell scanner into a USB port and test scan but it does not work. Then I found a
instructed my scanner on:
https://sermoa.wordpress.com/2010/07/10/packard-bell-mustek-bearpaw-scanner-on-ubuntumint/
I had to, however, create a new directory gt68xx, see below, to make it work!
Plugged in the scanner into the USB. Started a terminal. Tried to scan an image by writing the scan
23

image. it will not work, I needed to see the error message.
[bpalmqvist@localhost~]$ scanimage
[gt68xx] Couldn't open firmware file (`/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/PS1Dfw.usb'): No such file or
directory
scanimage: open of device gt68xx:libusb:004:002 failed: Invalid argument
I downloaded the file PS1Dfw.usb, but if a different filename is shown in the error message, so
download it from:
http://meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/
[bpalmqvist@localhost~]$ cd Hämtningar
[bpalmqvist@localhost Hämtningar]$ su
Lösenord:
[root@localhost Hämtningar]# mkdir /usr/share/sane/gt68xx
[root@localhost Hämtningar]# mv PS1Dfw.usb /usr/share/sane/gt68xx
[root@localhost sane]# exit
[bpalmqvist@localhost Hämtningar]$
[bpalmqvist@localhost ~]$ scanimage -L
device `gt68xx:libusb:001:012' is a Mustek Bearpaw 1200 CU Plus flatbed scanner
Now start the Simple image scanning Load a picture into your scanner, press the Scan button, and
when the image was scanned press Save the document to a file. It worked!
Start gscan2pdf scan a new image, it worked well. Both programs can save in different formats.
My advice is to check the http://www.sane-project.org/ if your scanner supported by SANE.
FTP program:
Filezilla was not pre-installed, but is available for installation, so I installed via Program Manager.
Image Processing:
GIMP is preinstalled. GIMP can be used instead of Adobe Photoshop. It's a little hard to get started
before learning how it works, but very powerful once you have learned the basics!
Text editor:
Plain text editor that starts by default when you edit a text file is xed. Nano is also installed. I also
installed Improved we VIM through the Program.
Many more are available for installation such as: Emacs, leafpad.
Accounting Software:
The following accounting program is available for installation: gnucash. I'll look at it later.
Visma Administration 1000, a Swedish accounting software. I try to install it at a later time under
wine, and try if I can get it to work.
A previous edition “SPCS Bokföring 2002” works under Wine.
24
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
E-mail-client:
Mozilla Thunderbird is preinstalled. Add your own e-mail accounts like this:
Click Menu -> Internet -> Email client Thunderbird. Then the Thunderbird starts and displays this
window, click Skip ...
This displays the window for entering your email account: Enter your name as you want it to appear
to others. Enter your existing e-mail address and password. It very important to enter your correct
email address and password, or the account will not work! Press Continue.
25
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
If all has gone well the servers have been automatically set, verify that the information is correct! If
so, press Done, otherwise press the manual setting and change what's wrong.
Now the mail client is properly set up and you can try to send and receive e-mail
Video Phone (VOIP):
Skype is available for installation. I installed it via Program Manager.
Start Skype and the Terms of Use window appear, then I click agree.
26
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
Now the log in window is shown:
I insert my Skype name and password, and click Login.
27

This is what the base window looks like:
If you double-click the contact you want to call, a control window opens with a Call button. Press
Call.
28

I try to call my gallery, Hilding Palmqvist It works as it should !:
To end the call, press the red handset in the image window, or the End Call in the control window.
29
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
Multimedia players:
Media player:
Xplayer is preinstalled. VLC is available for installation, so I installed it.
I started VLC media player, and it works for both music and movies/video!
Audio player, Music player:
Rhythmbox Music Player available for installation. Preloaded are Banshee and Xplayer
Antivirus software:
Antivirus programs are not needed in Linux, in my opinion, if you are careful with what you install
that does not come from the repository. There is little risk that malicious software comes in.
However, there is clamav which is a command program which can perform advanced scanning.
Added to this is a GUI Clam TK. I installed clamav and clamtk. I scanned my home directory, but
found no threat.
30
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
DVD Burner:
Brasero Disc burner is pre-installed. K3b is available for installation. I installed K3b via Program
Manager. I have been using K3b for several years ( from Fedora 17), and it has worked like
clockwork every time, however, it pops up some strange error messages that the disc can not be
found or installed, or is already installed, but you do not have to care about them. I think it has to do
with that there will be conflict between the File Manager and K3b when the disk is inserted!
Terminal program:
The terminal (gnome-terminal) is pre-installed, but I do not like the color, green text on a black
background. I changed to black text on white background by: Start Terminal. Edit -> Preferences. In
the Colors tab, you can uncheck "Use colors from system" and uncheck "Use transparent
background," then choose "Black on white" for "Embedded schedules". If you want to see more
rows as standard such as 50 lines: Edit → Profile Settings Under General at the initial terminal size,
change the number of rows 24-50.
There are many terminals to install: Guake, Terminator, Yakuake, Xfce Terminal, Xterm,
ROXTerm, pterm (Putty), guake, kterm rxvt-unicode, etc. roxterm I installed Putty (Telnet / SSH
Client for X) and Yakuake.
Firewall:
Turn on the firewall
The firewall ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) is disabled by default.
Start a terminal, Menu - Administration – Terminal, and use the command sudo ufw enable to
enable it. Press Enter. Type your password when prompted. See terminal window below how
enabling of firewall is done:
31
Switch from windows to linux mint, by Bertil Palmqvist.
You can check the status of the firewall with this command sudo ufw status verbose.
You can disable the firewall with the command sudo ufw disable.
See manpage of ufw with the command man ufw
Bittorrent program:
BitTorrent client Transmission-gtk is preinstalled. There is others to install. for example deluge,
qbittorrent and others
Python Interpreter:
Python is preinstalled.
Games:
Nexuiz is available for installation. I installed via the Program Manager. If you like "first person
shooter", there are also other to install: Alien Arena, Darkplaces Quake, Doom, Free, RedEclipse,
Open Arena, Quake, quake2 and bzflag. There are plenty of other games to install, try the ones you
want .. For Windows games see the Wine installation.
Wine
To install and run certain Windows programs in Linux you have to install wine.
Do this:
In Program Manager, sought after wine, and wine is available for installation. I installed wine
through the Program Manager.
Now you must restart the computer for wine to work!
Classic old windows game: Pinball, Cards, Freecell, solitaire, spider can be copied from your
Windows computer and started from a terminal withcommand pinball.exe wine, or right click on
pinball.exe in File Manager, choose Open With -> "Wine Windows program Launcher".
Windows applications on CD / DVD can be installed in wine as follows:
Examples QUAKE III Arena:
Insert Quake III disc, select access with File Handler, a window opens showing the files on the CD.
Right-click the setup.exe file, choose Open With -> "Wine Windows Program Launcher", QUAKE
III Arena window opens, click Install. Proceed as on a Windows system. Start Quake III: Double
click the icon. NOTE! The CD must be inserted for the game to work!
Map program:
Google Earth (googleearth-package) is available for download. It is a tool for building a personal
32

debian package, which may not be further distributed! I installed it via the Program Manager.
Made the package with the command
$ make-googleearth-package
Tried to install the package with the command:
$ sudo dpkg -i googleearth_6.0.3.2197 + 1.2.0-1_amd64.deb
It turned out to be dependency problems:
.....
dpkg: beroendeproblem förhindrar konfigurering av googleearth:
googleearth är beroende av libfreeimage3, men:
Paketet libfreeimage3 är ej installerat.
googleearth är beroende av lsb-core, men:
Paketet lsb-core är ej installerat.
googleearth är beroende av libcurl3:i386, men:
.....
I installed libfreeimage3 lsb-core through the Program Manager, and installed libcurl3: i386 with
the following command:
$ sudo apt-get install libcurl3: i386
Then I tried to install the package again. Now it succeded! The program's icon appeared in Menu →
Internet → Google Earth
Then I tested Google Earth, and it works fine. I also tested to zoom in on the moon, it worked!
Record Desktop Session:
The gtk-recordmydesktop is available for installation. I installed it via the Program Manager. This
program can be very helpful if you're doing a Youtube video to show how to do different things in
Linux. Do not forget to have a working microphone plugged in so that you can comment on what
you do.
HTML-editor:
Bluefish HTML editor is available for installation. I installed it via Program Manager.
Partition Editor:
I installed gparted.
Uppdate everything
When all the programs you want to have on your computer are installed, you should install the
updates.
Menu -> Administration -> Update Manager
Then Update screen appears, click Reload then the updates available will be displayed.
If only one update appears for example mintInstall, first click Install Updates, and then click

Now the packet files will be downloaded and installed.
After all updates are complete, this screen will be shown, click Close.
For safety's sake, restart your computer for all the updates to take effect.
Conclusions
I am pleasantly surprised that it was so easy and painless to install. I welcome the Cinnamon
desktop, no flickering and hidden window here, but just a well functioning menu button on the
bottom left. I am also positive that most of what I need is preinstalled. I can really recommend this
distribution. Please try Linux Mint 18, the best so far. If you follow this document it will be easy to
install and configure! Once you've installed Linux Mint 18 and the selected programs you want to
use on the computer, I think, it's the right one for me!
Do not install Linux Mint 18 without having read through this document, it is otherwise easy that
something goes wrong. All other distributions I've tried have several problems during and after
installation if you use another language than english. To correct these problems often requires
expertise.

Appendix 2: Applications and settings that I want to use.
I want to set the character encoding globally to my chosen language Swedish UTF-8 encoding.
Office Package: In Swedish and can save to multiple Microsoft Office formats,
and can export to PDF.
Browser: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera.
I use Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera, in that order. It is very important that the example
banking can be carried out unhindered by browser version and operating system. Your browser must
absolutely be able to cast to your TV. I use today Chromecast to watch streaming television.
Chrome in Windows has a plugin to handle this. On the tablet with Android manages and updates
this. In both works streaming like a dream in our environment.
Bank-ID
It must be possible to install the software that manages the Bank on the Internet in my case Nordea.
I use it not only for the Internet bank, but also to sign the Tax Agency and above all to communicate
with my “Vårdval”. I do not know to what extent the Mobile Bank ID can be used to replace e-leg,
and in that case the drill in Linux.
PDF reader: Adobe pdf reader, or similar.
Printer drivers: I have the following printers HP OfficeJet 7000 E809a, HP LaserJet 5L, HP
OfficeJet Pro 8500 and Brother MFC-410CN. I want to use them all.
You will try to install Your printers here.

FTP filetransfer: Filezilla.
Image Processing: Lightroom, GIMP, och något program som kan läsa in Nikons moderna RAWformat och editera.
Texteditor: Notepad, Notepad++, Vi.
Accounting Software: Visma Administration 1000, or similar approved by the Tax Authority.
Email-client: Mozilla Thunderbird
Video phone: Skype .
Multimedia player: Windows Mediaplayer or VLC.
Music player: Winamp
Antivirus program: Avast antivirus
DVD Burner: DC/DVD: type Nero.
Terminal: Putty
Firewall: Zonealarm
Bittorrent client: Vuze or similar
Map program: Google Earth
HTML-editor: Coffee Free HTML editor or similar
Python Interpreter: (in Linux and Android (QPython))
Games: Nexuiz, Quake III Arena, World of WarCraft, IL-2 STURMOVIK.
Windows programs:
Classic windows games: Pinball, Cards, Freecell, solitaire, spider
Windows programs on CD/DVD: QUAKE III Arena, World of WarCraft och IL-2 STURMOVIK.

Appendix 3: How to make a bootable USB stick from an iso-file
In this example below I make a bootable USB stick with Linux Mint 18 by using a downloaded iso
file. If you are going to make a bootable USB flash drive with another operating system or another
distribution, you only have to replace the linuxmint-18-cinnamon-64bit.iso with the iso-file you
want to install using the dd command described below.
.
To make a bootable USB memory stick on a Linux computer is super simple:
You must be logged in as root (superuser) user: sudo su or just su depending on how the system is
set up.
Start a terminal window and log in as the root user. Go to the directory where you downloaded the
iso file with the cd command. Insert the USB stick. Check what the device name of the USB stick is
using the command fdisk -l (commands in bold below that you can cut and paste into your terminal
window, and possibly edit commands, if you have another device name) In my case, my 250GB
SSD drive has the device name /dev/sda, and the 8GB USB stick has the device name /dev/sdb.
Unmount the USB memory with the command umount /dev/sdb1, then write the iso file to the
USB stick with the command dd if=linuxmint-18-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdb It took about 7
minutes to write USB stick.
Here are the commands copied from the terminal window. You can cut the commands from here and
paste them into your terminal window. Pay attention to the device name for your USB stick, and
replace my device name /dev/sdb with that in the dd command.
