The 2011 ND Legislative Session is starting soon,
and the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce will
once again host the Saturday Legislative Forums
beginning Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. at the Minot Auditorium.
“The forums are a way for the business community to learn about the bills being discussed at the legislature and to give input to area lawmakers,”
Chamber President John MacMartin said. “Chamber
members, business owners, and the community are
invited so they are up to date on the latest legislative
activity in Bismarck.”
The format allows for those attending to submit
written questions, which are given to a moderator
who then addresses them to the appropriate legislator. The schedule below is subject to change.

Each session will begin at 9 a.m. at the Minot Auditorium

Annual event brings
TEAM MINOT together
The 46th annual Sportsmen’s Feed is set for
Sunday, Jan. 23, beginning at noon at Minot AFB’s
Jimmy Doolittle Center. The event provides Air
Force personnel and community supporters with a
place to watch the NFC/AFC football playoffs, win
some prizes, and eat some great food.
The day will be filled with delicious food ranging
from venison to duck, pheasant and turkey, along
with all the trimmings. Tickets are $30 each, which
gets you in the door and sponsors an airman. Your
support is needed to make this event a success and
to provide a fun, relaxing day for airman who may
otherwise be sitting in the dorms alone.
The day starts at noon with appetizers and games
throughout the day, with supper around 6 p.m. Help
make this day special, come for appetizers, come
for dinner, or come and spend the day. If you would
like to donate door prizes or order tickets, call 8526000, send a fax to 838-2488, or send an email
message to chamber@minot.chamber.org.
Bloomberg Businessweek:
Minot listed as best
place to raise kids
According to the Dec. 19 issue of the
online magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek,
Minot is the best place in North Dakota to
raise kids.
A small city with a hefty history,
Minot sprang from nothing when a
cross-country railroad stopped work
for the winter in 1886. Called the
Magic City, Minot is home to a zoo, an
art museum, the Scandinavian
Heritage Park, multiple golf courses,
and a nearby Air Force base that is a
significant driver of the economy. The
long winters, however, are not for the
faint of heart. Average temperatures in
January approach zero degrees
Fahrenheit.

Cookie drive provides thousands of goodies to airmen at MAFB
The Minot Air Force Base Officers’
Spouses Club chaired the annual cookie drive
for airmen. Cookies were donated by base
personnel, as well as companies and families
from Minot. The Minot Area Chamber of
Commerce served as a drop-off point and
received 844 dozen baked goods. At left: A
member of the Officer Spouses Club collected
and package baked goods. The packages were
given to airmen residing in the dormitories to
spread holiday cheer. (Photo courtesy of

Long-time Minot Area Chamber of
Commerce volunteer Lowell Latimer was
named as an honorable mention in the
Fargo Forum’s special spread about volunteers over 80. Roger Reich of Minot and
Susan Towle Everson both submitted information to the Forum. Latimer was included
as one of eight honorable mention volunteers:

Nominator Roger Reich of Minot wrote:
“Lowell is the director of the Minot
Public Schools Foundation, but his service to the community goes much deeper
then that. He is a member of over 20
organizations and spends over 100 hours
a month doing volunteer work for them.
“Here’s a list of just a few of the
organizations he is involved with: norsk
Høstfest, Minot Area Community

his outstanding service.”
MAC Foundation grants $45,000
The Minot Area Community Foundation
(MACF) is wrapping up 2010 – it’s 10th
anniversary as a foundation – by granting
more than $45,000 into the community
before year’s end.
The grants will come from three funds
and be awarded to the following Minot area
organizations:
Power of the Purse Fund: Trinity
Pediatric
Unit
($1,250),
Bremer
Community Impact Fund, Northern Council
of Boy Scouts ($ 3,000), Sunnyside
Elementary School ($250); and the Mike &
Dorothy Dolan Fund: Souris Basin
Transportation ($20,000), Burlington
Recreation Commission ($10,000), YMCA
($5,000), Minot Commission On Aging
($2,500), North Dakota Elks Foundation
($860), 2nd Story – Minot Social Club
($840), Parkinson’s Support Group ($800).
The announcement of these grants comes
on the heels of MACF receiving its largest
gift in the Foundation’s history. In October,
MACF received a $3 million gift from the
late Arnold I. Besserud of Minot.
“This year certainly has been an exciting
one for the Minot Area Community
Foundation, with the celebration of our 10th
anniversary and the receipt of the
Foundation’s largest gift ever,” said ken
kitzman, MACF president. “To issue
$45,000 of grants – just in this month alone
- back into the Minot area is quite a finale to
this extraordinary year.”
kitzman also noted MACF’s overall success for this year: “In 2010, the Foundation
has issued $309,600 in grants back to the
community.” Since inception, total grants
have exceeded $3.5 million.
Aside from the 10th anniversary and
receipt of the Foundation’s largest gift,
other 2010 MACF highlights include the
10-day community celebration and the
donation of the Magic Smiles playground.

Area Community Foundation visit,

St. Alexius to Provide On-Site
Ergonomics Assistance to ND Employers
St. Alexius Medical Center has been
selected as one of eighteen providers to
offer on-site ergonomic assistance to North
Dakota employers through the Workforce
Safety & Insurance (WSI) Ergonomic
Initiative Program. The purpose of the
Ergonomic Initiative is to reduce or eliminate cumulative-type injuries at the workplace. Through the program, WSI will offer
North Dakota employers resources, as well
as financial assistance, to address ergonomic issues. According to WSI’s website, North
Dakota has seen a steady number of
ergonomic related injuries each year.
Cumulative trauma injuries (including
strains) have accounted for approximately
35% of all reported claims in North Dakota
over the past five years. Ergonomics is the science of designing
user interaction with equipment and workplaces to fit the user. Proper ergonomic
design is necessary to prevent repetitive
strain injuries, which can develop over time
and can lead to long-term disability. What
typically begins as minor aches or pains, if
ignored, has potential to develop into costly
claims. WSI is taking a proactive approaching by focusing on preventative measures,
rather than post-injury, to assist employers
in controlling costs. Employers can specifically request to
work with St. Alexius’ Human Performance
Center when contacting WSI concerning the
implementation of the initiative within their
own business.
