Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards® including BEST MUSICAL, ONCE is a
truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of
actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the
enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his
dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting
love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to
powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper
and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating
and theatrically breathtaking, ONCE draws you in from the very first note
and never lets go. It’s an unforgettable story about going for your dreams...
not living in fear... and the power of music to connect all of us.

The quintessential backstage
musical comedy classic, 42ND
STREET is the song and dance
fable of Broadway with an
American Dream story and
includes some of the greatest
songs ever written, such
as “We’re In The Money,”
“Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle
Off To Buffalo,” “Dames,” “I
Only Have Eyes For You” and
of course “42nd Street.”
Based on a novel by Bradford
Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s
1933 movie, 42ND STREET
tells the story of a starryeyed young dancer named
Peggy Sawyer who leaves her
Allentown home and comes to
New York to audition for the
new Broadway musical Pretty
Lady. When the leading lady
breaks her ankle, Peggy takes
over and becomes a star.

Cleverly putting the “mock”
in democracy, The CAPITOL
STEPS began as a group of
U.S. Senate staffers who set
out to satirize the very people
and places that employed
them. And there is never any
shortage of fresh, comedic
material. Since they began,
the CAPITOL STEPS have
recorded over 30 albums,
including their latest, How to
Succeed in Congress Without
Really Lying. This election year
is comic gold for this group of
musical parodists.
Every famous character and Shakespearean plot device come together
in a single story so comically outrageous it’s no wonder the Bard of
Avon hid it away. Historical evidence suggests that this manuscript,
Shakespeare’s very first written work, is so romantically rich, historically
accurate, and theatrically overstuffed that in a stroke of genius The
Bard decided to break it up into the thirty-seven plays. In this “tale
told by idiots,” all of The Bard’s famous characters, greatest lines, and
magnificent speeches are woven into a brand new Shakespearean
smorgasbord that erupts when Puck & Ariel hijack the plot of Comedy
of Errors, creating such new and strange bedfellows as Kate and
Beatrice, Hamlet and master motivator Lady Macbeth, Dromio and
Juliet, as well as King Lear and his three daughters who turn out to be
the three weird sisters from Macbeth.

A LIVING, BREATHING,
AMERICAN
MASTERPIECE! It is,
quite simply, one of the
most acclaimed and
enduring performances
in the history of theater.
Fifty years ago, a young
actor took the stage
in a tiny off-Broadway
theater and introduced
the world to a man
they would never
forget. The actor was
Hal Holbrook and the
man was Mark Twain.

L!VE
THE WHITING
2016-17 SEASON
INSPIRATION. WONDER. JOY.
UNDERSTANDING. COMMUNITY. IDENTITY.
PURPOSE. THESE ARE ONLY A FEW OF
THE MANY ESSENTIAL THINGS L!VE
PERFORMING
ARTS CREATE.
The performing arts have served since the beginning of time
as a way to celebrate and record our existence. They offer
us a glimpse of life that makes us laugh, cry, and shout with
joy. They help us discover and understand ourselves, our
relationships with others, and our place in the world. They
provide us with a purpose in life.
The Whiting is a place where you can discover all of these
sentiments. At the Whiting you will find a place where
families come together to share a special occasion, where
youth discover wonder as the magic of live theater unfolds
before their very eyes, and where we see community built
as the experience shared by those in our theater provides a
sense of belonging.
Live performing arts offer us an escape from our everyday affairs
and contribute to our quality of life. We are so fortunate to
reside in a city that values the live stage performances we offer.
For nearly 50 years, The Whiting has been Flint and
Genesee County’s most treasured premier performing arts
venue. Since opening its doors in 1967 local, national, and
international acts have been enriching our community with
music, dance, comedy, theater, dramatic readings, and many
other inspiring performances.
None of these memorable
experiences would be possible
without the support of the
generous members of our
community. Like all Performing
Arts Centers, ticket sales and
rentals cover only a portion of
our operating expenses. As a
non-profit organization, The
Whiting relies on the valuable
support we receive from
individuals, corporations, and
foundations to help us deliver
the consistently high level of
quality presentations that you
have come to expect.
Without the continued support
of our caring community, The
Whiting would not exist as it
does today. Your gift will help
to ensure the continuation and
growth of The Whiting’s vision
to present, create, inspire, and
share the best in the performing
arts, and in partnership with
others, seek to advance
education, promote economic
development, and enrich the
community in Flint, Genesee
County, and beyond.
