Spring 2015
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—APRIL 2015
The 47th Old Book Sale is now in the books (no pun intended!)
This year our total sales were in excess of $70,000. We feel
that this is a tremendous success for the Friends of the Library and
the community as a whole. The credit goes to the many hardworking volunteers who toil throughout the year, as well as all
those volunteers who show up to help at the Sale itself.
Although we are definitely feeling the effects of the Kindle and
other electronic devices on our total sales, we still put a mountain
of books in the hands of readers. Our preview Sale for members
was a great success considering the rainy, cold evening we encountered. We even signed up 63 new members that night!
So, we are off and running, working toward our next big Sale in
2016. In addition, we are having great success with our online
sales on Ebay, which continue to increase. Total revenue from
online sales was over $35,000 in 2014, and we are expecting further increases in 2015. Many thanks go to John Gregor and the
entire online sales team for this tremendous result.
This year we plan to hold our annual meeting at the Friends
workroom in Riverstreet Corners, off Riverside Drive, on Tuesday, May 5th at Noon. We will have a luncheon catered by
Fincher’s Barbecue to celebrate our success this year. Please feel
free to drop by and celebrate with us.
We continue to support literacy efforts in the community
throughout the year by donating books to various organizations, as
well as to the Little Free libraries.
It has been my pleasure to serve as President of the Friends of
the Library organization this past year, and I want to extend my
thanks to our entire membership and volunteers for their support.
We can always use new supporting members, so please invite your
friends to become members.
Sincerely, Andy Newton

Junior League of Macon’s Spring Book Club Event
Jennifer
Hillman-Magnuson
This spring, Junior League of Macon will host its second annual community-wide book club for women. The selection this year is
Peanut Butter and Naan: Stories of an American Mom in the Far
East, by Jennifer Hillman-Magnuson. In her debut memoir, HillmanMagnuson details her family’s move from Nashville, Tennessee to
India and how it changed their lives forever. Her story examines the
chaos of parenting, love of motherhood, and self-discovery. Critics
have called it “thoughtful, often hilarious...a combination of Eat,
Pray, Love and Modern Family.”
The author also has a connection to Macon. Before moving to
Oregon (where she and her family currently reside), HillmanMagnuson lived in Macon and was a member of the Junior League.
She will be returning to Macon in May for two reading/signing events
sponsored by the Junior League. All women in the Middle Georgia
area are invited to read the book and participate in these events with
the author. They will be held on May 14th from 7-9 p.m. at Barnes
and Noble, and May 15th from 8-10 a.m. at Taste and See. For more
information, visit www.jlmacon.org.

On-Line Book Sales Continue to Grow
John Gregor
Sales growth for on-line sales continues to increase. First quarter sales this year broke the
twelve thousand dollar mark at $12,113. Because of the popularity of Religious & Spirituality
books, we have increased the number of listings in this category, and that has helped increase
sales revenue.

Mystery and Suspense is one of the biggest sellers at our annual old book sale. This year we had
quite a few left over, so we are now making them available to you throughout the year. This offer
is open to members only, and is not available to the general public.
You can now purchase M&S books on line from our eBay store and pick them up at our workroom. We currently have over 500 to choose from. They are all hardcover retail edition (no book
club) with dust jackets and in very-good to like-new condition. As a Friends Member you can purchase any of these for $2 each with local pickup at our workroom here at 2720 Riverside Drive in
Macon.
Check out what's available at the following link: http://stores.ebay.com/friends-books. Then select Mystery & Suspense from the left-hand column Category Section. When you browse the
M&S books in our store, you will notice they are all listed for $8 each. Your "make offer" price is
$2 with local pickup, or we can mail your book via media mail for an additional $3.88. When you
make an offer be sure to tell us you’re a member and if you will be picking your purchase up. The
workroom is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 1 PM
If you have any questions about this new member benefit, send us an email to: friendsofthelibrarymacon@gmail.com
