Conventional Features
A-RB® (Anti-Rust Bearings) A-RB bearings are stainless steel
ball bearings that have been through the A-RB treatment
process which makes them at least 10 times more corrosion resistant
than standard stainless steel ball bearings (please see page 102 for more
information).
High Efficiency Gearing (HEG™) HEG consists of not only the
gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate. First
we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer increased
leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that incorporates the setplate
and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we have eliminated flex in the
drivetrain that causes normal gears to bind under pressure. By eliminating the
flex and increasing the leverage, we are able to provide high-speed retrieves
and deliver an incredible amount of torque, while maintaining the smooth,
silent retrieve Shimano® reels are famous for.
2-Speed Gearing This shifting mechanism is designed so that
gearing changes are quick and easy, even when fighting a fish.
The low gear ratio used for high-power retrieves is selected by pushing
the button on the base of the handle. Return to the high-speed ratio by
sliding the release button along the handle shank. By using two sets of
gears, the drive and pinion gears are always engaged. There is no gear
meshing during the shift.
Super Stopper ® Super Stopper uses a one-way, stainless steel
roller bearing that eliminates backplay. This provides the angler
with instant hooksetting power.
Assist Stopper This is a back up system to the Super Stopper that
consists of the traditional pawl and ratchet. Should the Super Stopper roller
bearing slip due to cold weather or over-lubrication, the Assist Stopper
kicks in to provide a solid hookset the instant the roller bearing begins to
slip. Most of the time the angler will not even know when this feature
engages, because by quickly stopping the backwards rotation of the roller
bearing, the Assist Stopper greatly reduces the chance of permanent
damage to the Super Stopper, allowing it to continue to function as designed.
Twin Pawl Anti-Reverse System uses two pawls for increased reliability
and durability, along with hooksetting power.
Rapid Fire™ Quick Change Drag Cam System allows anglers to change
the drag cam on the reel within seconds. This system changes the drag
curve on the reel to cater to specific techniques or fisheries. Reels
equipped with Rapid Fire come standard with a Long Range Special
(L.R.S.) curve and up to 7 other Rapid Fire cams are available as
accessories. For more information please see pages 24 through 31.
Twin Disk Drag System This system uses two drag washers that surround
a floating drag plate to effectively double the drag surface over traditional
drag systems. On a traditional drag system, a drag plate is pressed against
the drag washer to create drag. On the Twin Disk Drag System, the drag
washer is suspended between two drag plates. This utilizes both sides of
the drag plate and gives twice the drag surface of a single disk system.
Dartainium Drag ® This drag material provides a wider range of drag
settings, along with the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
Waterproof Drag With the use of rubber gaskets, the drag is protected
against intrusion of the elements, such as water or sand.
Ratcheting Drag Lever eliminates the chance of the drag lever backing
off due to boat vibration, and the detents serve as a reference point as to
how much the drag has been increased or reduced.
Septon®* This handle grip material is soft to the touch and does not get
slippery when wet.
Offset Ergonomic Power Grip The power grip is offset on multiple axes to
allow natural hand, arm and wrist angle, improving comfort and power.
Ergonomic Power Handle The handle grip, made of non-slip rubber, is
formed to provide maximum comfort and allows the angler to apply a
high amount of torque when fighting a fish.
8
3-Position Power Grip This unique handle grip was designed with two
goals in mind: comfort and function. The ergonomic contours of this handle
not only allow the angler to grip the handle like a typical barrel for
maximum torque, but also enable the user the utilize a two or three finger
grip similar to one on a paddle grip to easily work topwater plugs or rapidly
gain line.
Rubber Handle Grip is comfortable and soft to the touch.
Adjustable Handle Shank For deep water situations or for anglers needing
more leverage, the handle shank can be extended to increase the
amount of power that can be applied to the retrieve.
Optional Double Paddle Handle This allows the angler to purchase, as
an accessory, a double paddle handle for certain applications.
Counter Balanced Handle These single grip handles feature an extended
shank with a counter-balancing weight on the opposite end of the grip.
This reduces the amount of wobble during high-speed retrieves.
Reduced Profile Top Crossbar not only gives the angler better access to
the spool for line control, but also allows baits or lures to be dropped back
into the spread without having to remove the reel from the rod holder.
Palmable Linecounter with Maintenance Port Comfortably rests
between the thumb and forefinger when palming the reel, providing
depth readings in feet. The reset button is strategically located for easy,
one-handed resets, yet prevents accidental resets. Inserting one drop of
lightweight oil into the sealed maintenance port keeps the linecounter
performing in top condition.
Crossbar Forward Design Allows more access to the spool for better line
control, and provides more comfort when palming the reel.
Non-Disengaging Levelwind System On wide-spool reels with a nondisengaging levelwind system, the levelwind remains engaged during the
cast allowing the levelwind to track back and forth with the line as it
flows off of the spool. This eliminates the drastic line angles caused by
a disengaging levelwind system that can cause extreme friction which
can lead to short casts or frustrating backlashes. By doing this we have
increased the efficiency of the cast, allowing for more distance with
less effort.
Adjustable Clicker This clicker system allows the angler to adjust the
amount of freespool tension while the clicker is on.
Clicker When engaged, the clicker increases the tension in freespool
and activates a clicking alarm to alert you when a fish bites.
Oversized Clicker Button The button is larger and makes it easier to turn
on and off.
Oversized Cast Control Knob Comfortable and easy to use.
Permalube®** lubrication improves freespool while maintaining protection
and durability of moving parts.
Chrome Plated Sideplate Screws The sideplate screws are chrome plated
to prevent corrosion between the screws and sideplate.
Metal Series The metal construction showcased in
some of our finest reels now appears throughout our
line of Metal Series products. Metal frames not only keep moving parts in
precise alignment, they also feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating
and painting techniques for beautiful and durable finishes.

The Tiagra 16 was designed with a Long Range Special (L.R.S.)
style drag curve made popular with the Tiagra 50WLRS, and also features
a twin disk drag system to achieve 29.5 pounds of drag at Full while still
maintaining Freespool. This L.R.S. style curve is very steep allowing
anglers to take advantage of the incredible maximum drag settings that the
reel is capable of, while also providing a wide range of drag settings in
between Strike and Freespool. The Tiagra 16 is the ultimate reel for fishing
with today’s braided superlines.

curves. These curves allow the angler full use of the Warning position of
the lever by providing an area of low drag pressure just above Strike. This
is perfect for holding baits in the wake yet has light enough pressure so
that when a fish bites it reduces the chance of pulling the hooks out of
the fish’s mouth. The Tiagra 30A’s curve is steeper than the 20A, allowing
anglers to still reap the benefits of the Warning position yet be able to
reach higher drag pressures when fishing heavier lines.

The Tiagra 50A and Tiagra 50WA use traditional drag curves.
The curve for both models is identical. This curve allows a slow consistent
drag increase from Warning to Strike. It also allows use of a Warning
position, by having a steep transition from Freespool to the 1/4 position.
This is helpful when trying to hold baits within a trolling pattern yet having
a light enough drag to avoid pulling the hook from a biting fish’s mouth.

Tiagra 50A, 50WA, 50WLRSA, 80WA Drag Curves
The Tiagra® 50WLRSA was the first reel to feature an L.R.S. style
curve. This allows big game seeking anglers to size down in tackle yet
fish the high drag pressures normally associated with large reels. The
TI50WLRSA and TI80WA use the same drag curve and can achieve the
same drag pressures. So if you prefer smaller reels and braided line, the
Tiagra 50WLRSA is right for you. For those that use monofilament or
desire more line capacity the Tiagra 80WA is the reel of choice.

Tiagra A
The Tiagra® 130A combines the finest materials available with
®
Tiagra 130A & Optional Blue Marlin Cam
Drag Force (lbs.)
technology and experience gained from years of producing our smaller
sized Tiagras. Machined from 9mm thick aluminum pipe stock, with a
twin disk drag system that can produce up to 99lbs. of drag, the Tiagra
130A is a monster to battle monsters.
The drag curve is a gradual line that allows full advantage of the wide
range of drag settings generated by the TI130A. This curve is optimized
for battling giant tuna, sharks and billfish.
Also available is the optional Blue Marlin Cam. By changing this cam
(we recommend that installation be performed by one of our Satellite
Service Centers) it alters the drag curve. The Blue Marlin Cam’s curve
allows the angler to quickly drop the drag pressure on a running marlin
without having to worry about accidentally hitting Freespool. This is done
by making the first half of the curve extremely shallow, then jumping
into a steep curve to the Full position. The steep section is used for
fighting fish, while the shallow section serves as a “landing pad” for
quick drag reductions.

Imagine a saltwater reel with
more speed, more power,
more versatility, and better
castability.
Dream no longer. Introducing
the Shimano® Torsa™.
18
www.shimano.com
19
High SPEED
High POWER
20
Speed and Power
When designing Torsa™, one main goal was to
redefine all current ideas about speed and power.
Traditionally, lower gear ratio means more power,
and higher gear ratio means less power.
1
This remained true until the release of the
Trinidad®. Trinidad was equipped with High
Efficiency Gearing (HEG™) which, by using a rigid
platform and oversized gears, proved that the
dream of High Speed with High Power was a reality.
So with the release of Torsa, Shimano included
the largest gear they could build. This gear is 22%
larger than the Trinidad drive gear and 67% larger
than the venerated TLD®25.
The amount of power generated by Torsa’s
drivetrain, oversized handle shank and Ergonomic
Power Grip is unbelievable. Along with today’s
super braided lines, it will usher in new meaning to
“sizing down” to tackle powerful gamefish.
2
Also contributing to the Power of the reel is a Super
Stopper ® one-way roller bearing with Assist Stopper
back-up ratchet anti-reverse system. The system
has no backplay for solid hooksetting power and
the reliability of two anti-reverse systems.
The oversized drag washer, can generate
incredible drag pressures for a reel its size, and is
created using the same proven material used in
the Tiagra® series of 2-Speed lever drag reels.
[1] This extremely smooth cranking helically cut drive
gear is the largest in Shimano® reel history, and provides
unbelievable power along with a high speed retrieve.
[2] Because of the oversized sideplate and spool, Torsa™
is able to accommodate an extremely large drag washer
in relation to the size of the reel. This washer, made of
the same proven material found in Tiagra®, provides an
incredible range of drag pressures, while providing low
startup inertia for an extremely smooth drag.
[3] The Ergonomic Power Grip provides comfort and
reduces fatigue, while the extremely long handle shank
increases torque. Also, by bending the shank at strategic locations, the grip moves closer to the reel to
reduce wobble during fast retrieves.
[4] Just like when trying to jack up a car, a longer lever
means more power. Increasing the size of the gears
effectively gives the angler a longer lever, as shown in
illustration 4. This results in a High Speed reel with
unbelievably High Power.
3

21
Castability
22
Castability
Once again, Shimano® set out to change another
aspect of the reputation of lever drags:
Poor Castability.
Due to how lever drags are constructed, they are
inherently poor casters. The drag washers, drag
plates, cooling shields and bearings are included
in the spool assembly. This increases the overall
weight of the spool.
A heavy spool is bad for castability because it
takes much more energy to get the spool to
begin to spin. This is called startup inertia. Why
is this bad? Once the spool begins to spin, the
resistance drops rapidly. So there is a very
inconsistent spool speed and an excellent chance
for backlash.
As a result of the typical lever drag design,
the lob cast evolved. This casting style was
pioneered by the Long Range fishermen out of
San Diego to cast large baits to feeding
Yellowfin. However, for most other applications,
anglers were forced to use Star Drag reels when
they needed to cast small baits, due to their
excellent castability.
With Torsa™, the tables are turned.
[1] Intricate machining of the
spool reduces the overall weight
of the spool for lower startup
inertia. This means it takes less
energy to get the spool spinning
for less chance of backlash. The
machining is more drastic at
the center of the spool, which
effectively distributes the mass
outward. The result is similar to a
bicycle wheel, where most of the
mass is in the tire. This allows the
spool to continue to spin longer.
First, because of meticulous machining of the
Cold Forged Aluminum spool, the overall weight
of the spool was reduced to lower the startup
inertia. At the same time, most of the mass is
distributed outward. This results in the spool
spinning longer, just like a bicycle wheel, where
the tire and rim contain most of the wheel’s mass.
Secondly, Shimano added the Variable Brake
System (VBS®) which, since 1992, has proven
itself time and time again in their freshwater
baitcasting reels, such as the Calcutta®,
Chronarch® and Curado®, to help anglers with
castability. VBS uses centrifugal force to slow
down the spool at the beginning of the cast,
then reduces the braking force as the spool
slows. This gives a much more consistent
spool speed, which translates into a more
manageable cast.
And lastly, the handle side of the spool is taller
than the non-handle side. This extended spool
lip gives the angler a very consistent surface
to thumb during the cast. It has shown to
be valuable in testing, as it provides more
manageability than thumbing the inconsistent
surface of the line on the spool.
[2] Torsa is equipped with a
4-weight Variable Brake System
(VBS®). These weights are driven
outward by centrifugal force at
the beginning of the cast to slow
down the spool’s rotation. As the
spool slows, the brakes retreat,
allowing the spool to continue to
spin. This provides the angler
with a more consistent spool
speed, which means a much
more manageable cast.
www.shimano.com
[3] The spool lip on the handle
side of the reel is higher than
the non-handle side of the reel.
This aids in castability by giving
the angler a smooth, consistent
surface to thumb the spool,
rather than thumbing the line
itself. This results in a more
manageable cast.

™
RAPID FIRE
quick change drag
cam system
24
www.shimano.com
Rapid Fire™ Quick Change
Drag Cam System
The amount of drag that is increased or
decreased when the drag lever is moved
can be easily described as the “drag curve.”
Most drag curves throughout the fishing reel
industry are very similar: a gradual increase
in drag pressure from the freespool position
to the full position.
While a standard curve is excellent for many
mainstream fisheries, the shape of the curve
is not adjustable (see sidebar “Understanding
Lever Drags”). Therefore, in order to “fish
outside of the box,” such as with light lines or
to target specific fish, anglers were forced to
evolve their techniques and style around the
tackle available to them.
No longer.
With the new Rapid Fire Quick Change Drag
Cam System found exclusively on Torsa™, this
versatile reel can change to cater to specific
techniques. By simply putting the reel into
freespool and backing off the preset knob, the
angler removes the drag cam from the reel.
Then, by inserting one of 8 available Rapid
Fire drag cams, you completely change how
the reel is set up to fish within a matter of
seconds. No tools required, and no screws to
fall onto the deck of the boat.
On the next several pages, you will see these 8
different drag curves and the specific fisheries
they are applicable to. From light line world
record seekers, to braided line fanatics looking
to tackle huge fish on small tackle, to the
specific needs of chunk fishermen in the
Northeast, Torsa can do it all.
Torsa™ comes equipped with our L.R.S. (Long
Range Special) Rapid Fire Drag Cam, which
was made popular by reels in our Tiagra® line.
There are 7 other cams available at your Torsa
retailer depending upon your target fisheries.
Understanding Lever Drags
Lever drag reels have the advantage of being able to quickly
and precisely increase or reduce drag depending on the
circumstances. However, the amount of drag applied through
the lever’s travel (the drag curve) is fixed, thereby limiting the
effectiveness of the reel.
[1] This is an example of a typical lever drag curve that has
about 8 pounds of drag at Strike. From freespool to full, the
drag increases on a fairly predictable curve.
[2] If you’re fishing with heavier line and you tighten the preset
knob by 2 pounds at the Strike position, you increase the drag by 2
pounds at EVERY position. However, this is at the expense of lost
freespool (see left end of drag curve). This is not an ideal situation.
[3] If you’re fishing with lighter line and you loosen the preset
knob, you decrease the drag overall. However, the drag lever
has to travel through three-quarters of its range before any
drag is applied at all. This is not ideal, either.

Long Range
Special
Primary Application
All purpose
Recommended line
20- to 65-pound test
This cam comes standard on all sizes of Torsa™. It is an
“all-around” curve with many uses. The L.R.S. curve was
originally designed for the Tiagra® for anglers on the Long
Range boats out of San Diego. These anglers required high
maximum drag capabilities in smaller reels to catch large
Yellowfin Tuna in standup situations. The result is a steep
curve to allow use of heavy lines while maintaining freespool.
12# Light Line
Special
Primary Application
Light line tournaments
Recommended line
12- to 15-pound test
This light line cam is optimized for 12# monofilament. It is
designed for anglers in tournaments with line limits or bonus
point situations for line class. The Warning position provides
1/4 pound of drag and remains relatively flat to the 1/2
position. This is to allow the angler to quickly back off of the
drag on a running fish without accidentally dropping into
freespool. While higher drag can be used, the curve is not
26
optimal for that type of fishing, as by raising the preset Strike
drag above the target settings will result in a loss of
freespool. Without a light line specific drag curve, anglers
who use traditional curves may find that the reel will go into
freespool between the Warning and 1/2 positions, which
results in a loss of drag adjustability.
www.shimano.com
6# Light Line
Special
Primary Application
World record attempts
Recommended line
6- to 10-pound test
Similar in concept to the L.L.S. 12# Cam, the L.L.S. 6# curve
is optimized for 6# test. It is best suited for 6-10# line. This
will primarily be used by world record seeking anglers using
extremely light line. When set to 2-3 pounds of drag at Strike,
the warning position will be between 0.15 and 0.25 pounds
and remain relatively flat to the 1/2 position. This will allow
the angler to safely back off drag pressure on a running fish
without falling into freespool, backlashing and losing the fish.
50# Bottom
Fishing Special
Primary Application
Bottom fishing near structure
Recommended line
50- to 80-pound test
This curve will primarily be used in the Gulf of Mexico when
bottom fishing next to heavy structure like Oil Platforms.
Typically, when a fish bites, the boat runs away from the
structure to set the hook and to move the fish away from the
structure to reduce cut offs. The angler places a tremendous
amount of drag on the fish to move it away from the structure
quickly at the risk of breaking the line. As soon as the angler
moves the fish or turns it’s head, he will then quickly back off
the drag to the Strike position at 1/3-1/2 the breaking
strength of the line. The flat area just before until just after
the Strike position allows the angler to quickly get back to the
Strike setting without having to worry if they have gone too far
or not far enough. This cam is ideal for 50-80 pound test.
www.shimano.com
27
20# Bottom
Fishing Special
Primary Application
Bottom fishing near structure
Recommended line
20- to 40-pound test
This curve will be used in wreck or reef fishing situations
where the angler is moving large fish away from structure.
When fishing, the angler needs to place a tremendous
amount of drag on the fish to move it away from the
structure quickly. As soon as the angler moves the fish or
turns it’s head, he will then quickly back off the drag to the
Strike position at 1/3-1/2 the breaking strength of the line.
From here until he lands the fish, he will fight it with a
traditional drag range and not go back into the full position
again, unless the fish begins to run back into the structure.
This cam allows a very high Full position setting, but quickly
backs off to a safe area at the Strike setting so that the
angler does not accidentally back off too much drag.
Kingfish Special
Primary Application
Kingfish trolling
Recommended line
10- to 20-pound test
This is a shallow curve designed for Kingfish. Kingfishing
involves light lines and light drag pressures so that the hooks
do not rip from the fish’s mouth. It is a very gradual curve to
give anglers extra adjustability with a target Strike drag of 4
pounds. The range of settings with this curve are from 3-5
28
pounds at Strike which is optimal for use with 10-20 pound
test. There is also a large flat spot after warning to be used
to aid the clicker when trolling and to allow the angler to
quickly back off of the drag on a running fish without
dropping into freespool.
www.shimano.com
White Marlin
Special
Primary Application
Atlantic White Marlin
Recommended line
20- to 30-pound test
This cam will be used to drop back baits to White Marlin in
the Mid-Atlantic to North East regions of the United States.
The curve, when set at a target Strike drag of 8 pounds will
provide 1/4 pound of drag from warning to the 1/2 position.
This allows the angler to quickly drop the tension on a run-
ning fish while using light line. The fighting area of the curve
is from 1/2 to Strike. The section of the curve from Strike to
Full is very steep to provide a heavy drag setting of 15
pounds to quickly end the fight on a subdued fish for more
successful releases.
Chunk Fishing
Special
Primary Application
Atlantic Tuna with chunk baits
Recommended line
15- to 40-pound test
This cam will be used when fishing for Tuna with chunk
baits in the Northeastern United States. Chunk fishing
typically is performed in heavy currents. The slow ramp from
Warning to 1/2 is designed to hold the float and chunk in the
current. For small baits/floats in light current the Warning
position is optimal. When baits are bigger or currents are
stronger, the angler can move up to the 1/4 position to hold
the bait in place. The sudden steep section allows the angler
to quickly get enough drag for a solid hookset. Optimal Strike
drag settings range from 5-7 pounds.

• A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings) are made of Stainless Steel
that has been through the A-RB process.
• At least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard
Stainless Steel ball bearings.
• Easy Maintenance—no shield design allows for easy
flushing of debris and easy lubrication.
• Increased Bearing Speed—no shield design and lighter
viscosity lubrication reduce friction and allow the bearing
to spin faster and longer.
Super Stopper® with Assist Stopper
Super Stopper Super Stopper uses a one-way, stainless
steel roller bearing that eliminates backplay. This provides
the angler with instant hooksetting power.
Assist Stopper This is a back up system to the Super
Stopper that consists of the traditional pawl and ratchet.
Should the Super Stopper roller bearing slip due to cold
weather or overlubrication, the Assist Stopper kicks in to
provide a solid hookset the instant the roller bearing
begins to slip. Most of the time the angler will not even
know when this feature engages, because by quickly
stopping the backwards rotation of the roller bearing, the
Assist Stopper greatly reduces the chance of permanent
damage to the Super Stopper allowing it to continue to
function as designed.
Forged and Machined Aluminum
Components
The frame, sideplates and spool are made from aluminum,
which is first cold forged and then machined. This results
in extremely dense, rigid parts that not only allow the
anodization to adhere more deeply for corrosion protection,
but also provide a solid, unflexing platform for tight
tolerances and precision performance.

Low Profile Baitcasting eFatures
A-RB® (Anti-Rust Bearings) A-RB bearings are stainless
steel ball bearings that have been through the A-RB
treatment process which makes them at least 10 times more corrosion
resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings (please see page 102
for more information).
High Efficiency Gearing (HEG™) HE
Gconsists of not only the
gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate.
iFrst we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer
increased leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that incorporates
the setplate and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we have eliminated
flex in the drivetrain that causes normal gears to bind under pressure. By
eliminating the flex and increasing the leverage, we are able to provide
high-speed retrieves and deliver an incredible amount of torque, while
maintaining the smooth, silent retrieve Shimano® reels are famous for.
Magnumlite™ Spool This spool provides extremely low startup inertia for increased
line control and casting performance even when using lightweight baits or lures.
This is accomplished through using lightweight aluminum alloys and a unique
design that moves the mass of the spool outward.
Lo-Mass™ Drilled Spool System Lo-Mass rDilled Spool System is designed
for anglers who require longer casts and can sacrifice line capacity to do so.
The Lo-Mass spool features a large arbor that is cross-drilled to reduce its weight. By
moving the arbor of the spool outward, the mass of the spool is closer to the rim of the
spool. Like a lightweight bicycle wheel, where most of the mass lies in the tire, the
majority of a Lo-Mass spool lies in the arbor and the line it is spooled with.
A7075 Aluminum Spool These Lo-Mass spools are made of lightweight A7075
aluminum. Combining this material with an aggressive porting pattern results in
an extremely light weight spool. This allows for low startup inertia for casting
lightweight baits and an overall increase in useable freespool.
A6063 Aluminum Spool By using A6063, we are able to increase the corrosion
resistance of the spool. This is especially important with the use of today's braided
superlines which tend to stay on the reel longer and retain water.
®
Variable Brake System (VBS ) VBS uses centrifugal force rather than
magnets to aid in controlling the cast. The individual brake weights, when
turned on, are forced outward at the beginning of the cast when backlashes
most often occur, causing friction that reduces the speed of the spool. n
Oce
the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure lessens, allowing the spool to continue
spinning. The result is a much more consistent spool speed that is easier to
manage and takes advantage of the reel’s maximum casting distance. Settings
range from zero weights turned on for true freespool and up to 6 weights turned on
for extremely windy conditions and maximum cast control.
Reduced Mass VBS Hub reduces the weight of the spool, increasing freespool
and reducing start up inertia.
Spare Brake Weight Block Holds up to 2 extra brake weights for more adjustability.
Easy Mag® This magnetic cast control system can actually allow for a true
freespool setting. iW
th traditional magnetic systems, the magnets are moved away
from the spool. So, even at the zero setting, the magnets still apply some force
upon the spool. iW
th aEsy Mag, the magnets are rotated away from the spool and
towards each other. At the zero setting, the magnets face each other and cancel
themselves out, applying zero force to the spool.
Super Free (SF™) The Super rFee bearing-supported pinion gear system
(SF
) was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. nI
standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion
gear is freed and can actually drag on the spool shaft, creating friction and limiting the length of the cast. iW
th SF
, the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing,
and when the clutch is disengaged the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in precise
alignment. The result is zero friction on the spool shaft for increased freespool.
Escape Hatch By flipping a switch, the sideplate swivels downward, giving
the angler quick access to adjust the VBS weights. The switch is located in
a position that is easy to use, yet remains out of the way to prevent accidental
opening. The sideplate is smooth for comfort when palming the reel.
Turn-Key Access Sideplate By flipping up the Turn-Key on the sideplate and rotating
it counter-clockwise, the sideplate can be opened for quick VBS adjustments.
1/4 Turn Easy Access Sideplate An improvement over the already easy-to-use Turn-Key
access, with the 1/4 Turn aEsy Access Sideplate, the fisherman flips up the Turn-Key on
the sideplate, then rotates it 1/4 turn to open the sideplate for quick VBS adjustments.
Greaseless Spool Support Bearings These bearings, which support the spool during
freespool, are lubricated with a lightweight oil rather than grease. This allows the
bearings to have a lower start-up inertia and a faster rotation, which provides
awesome freespool.
50
Tapered Levelwind Insert This levelwind insert is coated with titanium, improving
the durability of the insert by increasing abrasion resistance. tI also reduces friction
on the line for increased casting distance and reduced line wear. The tapered
design not only makes it easier to thread the line through when setting up the reel,
but also further reduces friction and line angles during the cast for more distance.
Ion Plated Finish This finish is extremely durable and is more scratch- and
corrosion-resistant than paint.
Super Stopper ® Super Stopper uses a one-way, stainless steel
roller bearing that eliminates backplay. This provides the angler
with instant hooksetting power.
Assist Stopper This is a back up system to the Super Stopper that consists of
the tradition pawl and ratchet. Should the Super Stopper roller bearing slip due
to cold weather or over-lubrication, the Assist Stopper kicks in to provide a solid
hookset the instant the roller bearing begins to slip. Most of the time the angler
will not know when this feature engages, because by quickly stopping the
backwards rotation of the roller bearing, the Assist Stopper greatly reduces the
chance of permanent damage to the Super Stopper, allowing it to continue to
function as designed.
Instagage® I A useful feature for flipping and pitching, n
I stagage features two thumb
bars. The lower bar disengages the clutch, while the top bar engages the drivetrain.
iW
thout even turning the handle, the angler can instantly put the reel in gear.
I stagage
Instagage® II This feature brings all of the benefits of the original n
feature by allowing the angler to engage and disengage the clutch using only the
thumb. However, it uses a one-piece thumb bar, providing more access
to the spool. This makes threading line though the line guide easier, and it gives
the angler’s thumb more room to control the spool during the cast or other
freespool applications. There is also more room to clear backlashes.
Dartainium® Drag This drag material provides a wider range of drag settings,
along with the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
Clicking Drag Adjustment The micro-click mechanism prevents the drag from
backing off when set at light settings, and provides the angler a reference when
adjusting the drag.
Oversized Clicking Cast Control Knob The large size is easy to use, while the
clicking adjustment allows for precision settings.
Clicking Cast Control Adjustment The micro-click mechanism in the Cast Control
serves two purposes. The first is that it prevents the cast control from backing off
when set at light settings. The second purpose is to allow the angler a point of
reference when adjusting the cast control setting.
Cold Forged Handle Shank Cold forging allows more metal to be used in a much
more dense construction. This means the handle can be made in a smaller profile
with more strength and also allows for deeper anodization for protection from the
elements.
Drilled Handle Shank Reduces the weight of the reel without sacrificing strength.
PV Power Paddles These oversized paddle grips provide extra power and remain
comfortable after a full day of deep cranking.
SV Power Paddles These are the largest of the paddle grips and provide extra
fish fighting power when battling feisty inshore species.
Septon®* This handle grip material is soft to the touch and does not get slippery
when wet.
Rubber Handle Grip is comfortable and soft to the touch.
Recessed Reel Foot By recessing the reel foot further into the frame, the reel sits
lower in the reel seat. This allows for a much more palmable feel when the reel is
mounted on a rod than traditional frame designs. oNt only does it increase the
comfort level, but because of the lower profile in the reel seat, it makes the reel
much more maneuverable with casting styles such as underhand and roll casts.
Metal Series The metal construction showcased in some of our
finest reels now appears throughout our line of Metal Series
products. Metal frames not only keep moving parts in precise alignment, they
also feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating and painting techniques for
beautiful and durable finishes.

Chronarch
Chronarch A, Circa 1993
Chronarch B, present day
54
Improving A Timeless Classic
he Chronarch® A has been a staple
T
to walleye, that require fast line pickup with a minimum amount
of line capacity.
New technologies, advancements in design, and exciting new
materials have entered the market over the last decade. There
has also been the evolution of new fishing techniques, along
with the fact that reels originally designed for bass fishing have
become favorites of saltwater flats fishermen.
The BSV is the Saltwater Version that has a deep spool for line
capacity, high speed retrieve and oversized SV Power Grips for
fighting saltwater fish. With its extra line capacity and oversized
grips, the SV brings flats fishermen a baitcaster that was
designed for them.
At the beginning stages of renewing the Chronarch, it became
obvious that it would not do to simply throw in all of the new
features and technology that have come to the fishing industry
during the Chronarch’s lifetime. The challenge was to keep the
essence of the Chronarch A design, listen to Chronarch owners
about what they would like to see improved, and look at the
ever-widening applications with which the Chronarch A is used,
without changing its proven reputation.
There are also some exciting new features as well. For example,
take a look at the new Escape Hatch™ sideplate access system.
The sideplate is opened by flipping a switch that is easy to use
yet out of the way to prevent accidental opening. This not only
allows for quick VBS® adjustments, but also allows the sideplate
to be smooth and contoured to fit in your hand.
of fishermen since 1993 and its design
has become a timeless classic. From the
comfortable profile, to the large open window for
line control, to the unique appearance, the
Chronarch A is still one of today’s top performers
with its own personality.
The BPV is the new Power Version that is equipped with a
5.0:1 gear ratio, Lo-Mass spool, and new, larger, PV Power
Grips. With the PV Power Grips, 5.0:1 gear ratio and High
Efficiency Gearing, the PV is optimal for crankin’, slow-rolling
big spinnerbaits, or casting large swimbaits all day long.
The first thing Chronarch users asked for was an extremely
durable finish. For this reason, Chronarch B is now using an Ion
Plated finish. This type of finish has proven to be extremely
durable on reels like the Stella®. Also, to reduce the chance of
scratches from bouncing around in a rod locker, the Chronarch B
has two small metal plates on the top of each side of the frame.
Researching what Chronarch users fished for and how they
fished showed many applications and species. As a result, there
are three new versions of the Chronarch: CH-B, CH-BPV
and CH-BSV.
The standard B version is a high speed 6.2:1 reel, using our
Lo-Mass™ drilled spool system and traditional paddle-style grip.
This reel was designed for most fishing applications from bass
Of course there are also many of the exciting features that were
introduced during Chronarch A’s illustrious lifetime: Super Free
Bearing Supported Pinion Gear System (SF™), High Efficiency
Gearing (HEG™), Anti-Rust Bearings (A-RB®), and Super
Stopper® with Assist Stopper.
This new series was one of the most field-tested reels in
Shimano history. Over 300 bass were caught in the first three
days on the original prototypes at Lake Aguamilpa in Mexico.
These prototypes also have been fished on the flats of the east
and west coasts of Florida where they caught redfish, trout,
snook and jacks. After that they tamed the famous Toledo
Bend. After the first round of prototypes, field testing continued
at lakes and saltwater flats around the country.
We would like to introduce to you the next decade of high end
baitcasting…The New Chronarch B Series.

Magnesium is an extremely lightweight metal that reduces the overall
weight of the reel. Without a special protectant, magnesium is normally
highly susceptible to corrosion in saltwater.
The magnesium parts in our reels are specially treated to protect them
from premature corrosion or damage from saltwater use.
While our magnesium reels are safe to use in saltwater, care should be
taken when oiling the reel or filling the spool with line, etc., as scratches
through the protective surface coating caused by line cutters or other
tools can lead to premature rust and corrosion.
So, go ahead, fish the flats, fish the backwaters and rest assured, we’ve
protected your investment!

Curado D
The Story of the Curado® D
The most popular reel in the market gets even better.
Originally introduced to the fishing public in 1991, the
Shimano® Curado® series has become one of the most
popular low profile reels ever. Curado has changed
colors throughout the years but the built-in quality and
reliability is known among fishermen throughout the
sport. Whether it’s the tournament angler fishing with
thousands of dollars on the line, or the weekend
angler fishing his favorite waters, the Curado has been
there every step of the way.
This reel was designed with fishermen’s needs in mind
and has been an integral part of their arsenals for years.
Designed for ease of use and maximum performance for
a variety of fishing situations, the Curado series was
adopted by freshwater bass fishermen as the staple reel
for all techniques. oNmatter if it’s flipping craws, fishing
jigs, Carolina rigging, fishing topwater or crank baits, these
reels have helped anglers put more fish in the boat and
win more tournaments.
The Curado has also spent an ample amount of time
chasing inshore gamefish such as redfish, speckle trout,
snook, and a variety of others throughout oNrth America
with great success. Built to withstand extreme, harsh
elements, the Curado offers anglers a reel designed for
performance, one that instills confidence for both salt
and freshwater species, no matter what the job at hand.

[1] Curado® D takes High Efficiency Gearing (HEG™) to
the next level. By using extremely large gears, the Curado
DHSV (High Speed Version) delivers a blistering fast 7.0:1
gear ratio that not only provides unbelievable line pickup,
but also has the power to turn a stubborn fish’s head away
from structure. The DPV (Power Version) features a slower
5.0:1 gear ratio ideal for crankin’ large crankbaits or slow
rollin’ oversized spinnerbaits all day long without fatigue.
[2] The Magnumlite® spool is an extremely lightweight
spool design. By using innovative drilling and support
construction, the walls of the spool can be extremely
thin without sacrificing strength. This results in the
lowest startup inertia ever in a Shimano® reel. The
Magnumlite spool also requires less braking force
for manageability during casts, so less distance is wasted.
What this means is that the angler can cast lightweight
baits farther and more accurately than ever before.
[3] Curado® D reels utilize a one-way roller bearing called
Super Stopper®. This provides a solid anti-reverse without
backplay. The result are quick, powerful hooksets.
Curado also features Assist Stopper. This is a back up
ratchet-style anti-reverse system. Should the bearing
begin to slip due to overlubrication or extreme weather
conditions, the ratchet takes over and prevents the
bearing from becoming damaged. This “tag team”
style anti-reverse system provides not only the highest
performance but also the greatest reliability and durability.

Citica D
The Story of the Citica® D
A proven performer with years of experience.
®
®
The Shimano Citica low profile baitcasting reel has seen it’s
fair share of fishing action throughout the years. This reel has
helped more diehard fishermen enjoy weekends catching their
favorite game fish, while providing them the assurance of
getting those fish to the boat. The Citica has been around the
fishing community since the early 90s, offering anglers the
confidence they have grown to expect from a Shimano reel.
Shimano spends years designing and testing its reels so that
anglers have the very best partner to help them land fish year
after year. The Citica was designed to meet the needs of
anglers no matter what type of fishing they enjoy. Shimano
has spent years listening to fishermen and the problems they
experience on the water, trying to help alleviate them with new
and innovative features. The Citica incorporates many of the
features anglers have looked for.
The Citica offers anglers an aluminum frame that gives it
the backbone to keep its internal workings smooth and in
alignment while fighting the toughest opponents. It also
comes with Shimano’s Variable Brake System (VBS®)
for maximum casting efficiency in all conditions, giving you
the ability to get your bait in the fish’s face. The Turn-Key
Access Sideplate lets you adjust the VBS with a twist of the
wrist in a matter of seconds, so you can adjust to the
changing conditions while on the water. The clicking drag
adjustment gives anglers peace of mind knowing that their
drags will stay set without backing off in the middle of a fight.
1
2
3
The Citica has earned its reputation as a reel that offers
anglers what they need to get the job done, because
without the right equipment, a good day of fishing is hard
to come by. Citica will help make your days on the water
fond memories.
[1] The Lo-Mass™ Drilled Spool System is designed for anglers
who require longer casts and can sacrifice line capacity to
do so. The Lo-Mass spool features a large arbor that is
cross-drilled to reduce its weight. By moving the arbor of the
spool outward, the mass of the spool is closer to the rim of the
spool. Like a lightweight bicycle wheel, where most of the mass
lies in the tire, the majority of a Lo-Mass spool lies in the arbor
and the line it is spooled with.
[2] The Drilled Handle Shank reduces the weight of the reel by
drilling out unnecessary metal. This is done without sacrificing
strength or the structural integrity of the handle shank.
[3] Super Stopper® with Assist Stopper backup anti-reverse
system provides instant hooksetting power with extra
reliability. This is accomplished by using the Super Stopper
one-way roller bearing to eliminate backplay and the Assist
Stopper backup ratchet and pawl system that “kicks in” if the
bearing starts to slip. This prevents any damage to the roller
bearing and any loss of anti-reverse to the angler.

Round Baitcasting F
eatures
A-RB® (Anti-Rust Bearings) A-RB bearings are stainless
steel ball bearings that have been through the A-RB
treatment process which makes them at least 10 times more corrosion
resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings (please see page 102 for
more information).
High Efficiency Gearing (HEG™) HEG consists of not only the
gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate.
iFrst we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer
increased leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that
incorporates the setplate and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we
have eliminated flex in the drivetrain that causes normal gears to bind under
pressure. By eliminating the flex and increasing the leverage, we are able to
provide high-speed retrieves and deliver an incredible amount of torque,
while maintaining the smooth, silent retrieve Shimano® reels are famous for.
Digital Control™ See page 76.
Assist Stopper This is a back up system to the Super Stopper that consists
of the traditional pawl and ratchet. Should the Super Stopper roller bearing
slip due to cold weather or over-lubrication, the Assist Stopper kicks in to
provide a solid hookset the instant the roller bearing begins to slip. Most of
the time the angler will not know when this feature engages, because by
quickly stopping the backwards rotation of the roller bearing, the Assist
Stopper greatly reduces the chance of permanent damage to the Super
Stopper, allowing it to continue to function as designed.
Septon®* This handle grip material is soft to the touch and does not get
slippery when wet.
3-Position Power Grip This unique handle grip was designed with 2 goals
in mind: comfort and function. The ergonomic contours of this handle not
only allow the angler to grip the handle like a typical barrel for maximum
torque, but also enable the user the utilize a two or three finger grip similar
to one on a paddle grip to easily work topwater plugs or rapidly gain line.
PV Power Paddles These oversized paddle grips provide extra power and
remain comfortable after a full day of deep cranking.
Super Free (SF™) The Super rFee bearing-supported pinion gear system (SF
) was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the
cast. In standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down,
the pinion gear is freed and can actually drag on the spool shaft, creating
friction and limiting the length of the cast. With SF
, the pinion gear is supported
by a ball bearing, and when the clutch is disengaged the pinion gear and spool
shaft are kept in precise alignment. The result is zero friction on the spool shaft
for increased freespool.
Lo-Mass™ Drilled Spool System Lo-Mass Drilled Spool System is
designed for anglers who require longer casts and can sacrifice line
capacity to do so. The Lo-Mass spool features a large arbor that is crossdrilled to reduce its weight. By moving the arbor of the spool outward, the
mass of the spool is closer to the rim of the spool. Like a lightweight bicycle
wheel, where most of the mass lies in the tire, the majority of a Lo-Mass
spool lies in the arbor and the line it is spooled with.
Variable Brake System (VBS®) VBS uses centrifugal force rather than
magnets to aid in controlling the cast. The individual brake weights,
when turned on, are forced outward at the beginning of the cast when
backlashes most often occur, causing friction that reduces the speed of
the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure lessens, allowing the spool to continue spinning. The result is a much more consistent
spool speed that is easier to manage and takes advantage of the reel’s maximum casting distance. Settings range from zero weights turned on for true
freespool and up to 6 weights turned on for extremely windy conditions and
maximum cast control.
®
Handle Side VBS Reels equipped with this feature allow the angler to
remove the handle side sideplate and adjust the VBS weights without removing
the spool from the reel. This allows the angler to easily adjust the amount of
cast control while the line is threaded through the rod.
Easy Access Sideplate On reels with this feature, to access the VBS
system, a set screw on the handle side of the reel is loosed and the opposite
sideplate rotates open. rFom here the VBS weights can be adjusted without
having to remove the spool or any other parts of the reel, for easy, worry-free
adjustment on the water.
Quick Take Down By loosening the thumb screws on the handle-side
sideplate, the sideplate can easily be removed from the reel. This aids in
quick maintenance, and allow adjustment on the VBS brake weights in
the reel.
Large Diameter Super Duralumin Drive Gear The larger diameter increases
the amount of leverage an torque that can be applied to the fish. Super
Duralumin is extremely hard and therefore is more durable than standard
drive gears.
Dartainium® Drag This drag material provides a wider range of drag
settings, along with the smoothest Shimano® drag performance ever.
Super Stopper ® Super Stopper uses a one-way, stainless
steel roller bearing that eliminates backplay. This provides the
angler with instant hooksetting power.
SV Power Paddles These are the largest of the paddle grips and provide
extra fish fighting power when battling feisty inshore species.
Rubber Handle Grip is comfortable and soft to the touch.
Cold Forged Handle Shank Reels with this feature use a handle shank that
is cold forged. Cold forging allows more metal to be used in a much more
dense construction. This means the handle can be made in a smaller
profile with more strength and also allows for deeper anodization for
protection from the elements.
Adjustable Handle Shank oFr deep water situations or for anglers needing
more leverage, the handle shank can be extended to increase the amount
of power that can be applied to the retrieve.
Clicking Drag Adjustment The micro-click mechanism in the drag serves
two purposes. The first is that it prevents the drag from backing off when
set at light settings. The second purpose is to allow the angler a point of
reference when adjusting the drag.
Clicking Cast Control Adjustment The micro-click mechanism in the Cast
Control serves two purposes. The first is that it prevents the cast control
from backing off when set at light settings. The second purpose is to allow
the angler a point of reference when adjusting the cast control setting.
Non-Disengaging Levelwind System On wide spool reels with a nondisengaging levelwind system, the levelwind remains engaged during the
cast allowing the levelwind to track back and forth with the line as it flows off
of the spool. This eliminates the drastic line angles caused by a disengaging
levelwind system that can cause extreme friction which can lead to short
casts or frustrating backlashes. By doing this we have increased the
efficiency of the cast, allowing for more distance with less effort.
Recessed Reel Foot By recessing the reel foot further into the frame, the
reel sits lower in the reel seat. This allows for a much more palmable feel
when the reel is mounted on a rod than traditional frame designs. oNt only
does it increase the comfort level, but because of the lower profile in the
reel seat, it makes the reel much more maneuverable with casting styles
such as underhand and roll casts.
Drilled Crossbar By drilling the top crossbar of the reel, we have enhanced
the appearance of the reel while decreasing the overall weight. The result is
a beautiful looking reel that does not weigh you down.
CTE Clicker This clicker is strategically located for easy use, yet at the
same time, out of the way so that it cannot be accidentally turned on or off.
Clicker When engaged, the clicker increases the tension in freespool and
activates a clicking alarm to alert you as to when a fish bites.
Metal Series The metal construction showcased in some of
our finest reels now appears throughout our line of Metal
Series products. Metal frames not only keep moving parts in precise
alignment, they also feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating and
painting techniques for beautiful and durable finishes.

Digital Control
®
The Calcutta TE DC
• Revolutionary Digital Control Braking System
• Capable of exceeding 30,000 RPM
• Achieved casting distances of over 290 feet in testing
How It Works
During the initial moments of a cast, the energy
generated by the rotation of the spool is stored in
the Digital Control circuit board and used to power
the Digital Braking system for subsequent casts. The
Waterproof Digital Control system of a Calcutta TE DC
is a self-energizing system, recharging with
each cast. There is no battery or other power
source needed.
By simply turning the external eight-position dial
to the selected setting, the Calcutta TE DC allows
access to up to eight different pre-programmed
braking patterns based on lure type, wind conditions,
or casting method. Based on a 6-second duration
cast, the Digital technology behind the Digital Control
Braking System allows the electromagnetic brake to
be applied in intervals of up to 1/1000 of a second.
About Cast Control Systems
Traditionally, centrifugal and magnetic braking systems
have been employed on baitcasting reels to control the
speed of the spool’s rotation and the energy from casting
for better accuracy and to minimize backlashes.
Magnetic cast control systems are typically easily
adjusted externally. However, most magnetic systems
can not allow for a “true” freespool setting as magnets
can not be “shut off.” Also, because magnets are
always on, they slow the spool speed exponentially
because the same braking force is applied during fast
spool speeds at the beginning of the cast and during
the slow speeds at the end of a cast.
Centrifugal brake weight systems are more advanced
than magnets. This is because the weights apply
different forces throughout the cast. What this means
is that the angler will experience a more consistent
spool speed and that results in a more manageable
cast. Brake weights also allow for longer casts in most
instances because the brake weights reduce the
amount of force they apply as the spool begins to slow.
This allows the spool to spin longer. However, most
brake weight systems need to be adjusted internally.
This means the angler needs to partially disassemble
the reel to make adjustments to the cast control in
most cases.
®
Shimano has taken the next step in cast control
technology. Introducing the revolutionary new Calcutta
TE DC (Total Efficiency, Digital Control™). This is the
first, self-energizing Digital Braking “smart” baitcasting
reel. It features 8 different pre-programmed braking
patterns based on lure and casting type.
76
Typically, it takes approximately 0.07 seconds to reach
maximum spool rotation from the point of release. Reels
which employ conventional (Centrifugal or Magnetic)
braking systems to prevent backlash, operate efficiently
between 15,000 and 20,000 RPM. With the Digital
Braking technology employed by the Calcutta TE DC,
it is possible to allow spool rotation to exceed 30,000
RPM (a 50-70% increase of traditional systems) and still
maintain excellent line control for longer, more accurate
casts. This is because of the pre-programmed braking
patterns allow the spool to achieve maximum RPMs
before engaging the brake, whereas conventional reels
begin braking immediately and do not allow the spool
to continue accelerating throughout the casting motion.
As the brakes are activated, the Digital Brake system
emits electronic beep sounds reinforcing the sense of
Digital Control.
With this technology, each of the eight pre-programmed
braking patterns provide awesome control of the feeding
of the line by applying the ideal amount of braking force
at critical intervals. As a result, it is possible to achieve
long, accurate casts with consistent backlash control.
The application of the “smart” braking by the Digital
Braking system quickly stabilizes the spool rotation.
Digital Control varies the amount of braking force
applied, minimizing the dreaded backlash.
What This Means on the Water
The increased RPM’s provided by the CTE-DC
allow for longer casts. At the same time, the
pre-programmed braking patterns allow for not only
easy external adjustment for any situation, but also
an extremely manageable cast with less backlashes.
Less effort is needed to cast the bait further, this
combined with High Efficiency Gearing, put less
stress on the angler throughout long fishing days.
Overall, the Digital Control Braking System means
further casts, less effort, less backlashes and easy,
quick adjustment.

Spinning Features
®
A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings) are specially treated stainless steel ball bearings that are at least 10 times more corrosion
resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings. For more information, please see page 102.
®
Super Stopper anti-reverse uses a multi-stop ratchet that nearly eliminates backplay in the rotor for solid
hooksets. The Super Stopper anti-reverse can be turned off to allow backreeling for special techniques and situations.
Super Stopper
®
Super Stopper II is a one-way roller bearing that eliminates backplay for solid hooksets, yet can be turned on or off to
allow back-reeling.
®
Eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counterbalancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness.
By using computer balancing, an approach similar to car tire balancing, we are able to redistribute the rotor weight to create
smooth rotation, eliminating vibrations caused by the reel.
Dyna-Balance
®
By using a bearing or bushing, friction is reduced between the pinion gear and spool shaft for increased
smoothness and durability.
Floating Shaft
®
Fluidrive
Tight tolerances and the utmost control in the gear cutting process provide a smooth, powerful retrieve.
®
Fluidrive II Building upon the successes of Fluidrive, which provides extremely tight tolerances and control in the
cutting process, Fluidrive II polishes the gear surface to maximize tooth contact. This increases the efficiency of the
retrieve for more power with less effort.
®
This two-speed oscillation system layers the line onto the spool in a criss-cross pattern that reduces
line-to-line friction for longer casts. Aerowrap reels utilize a worm gear design to move the spool upward quickly and
downward slowly to wind the line in a precise pattern, reducing friction and giving smoother, longer casting ability.
Aerowrap
Varispeed™ Normal oscillation systems use a constant rotation of the oscillation gear that, when translated to the cam,
provides an inconsistent spool speed. This results in line lay that stacks at either end of the spool. By using an oval
oscillation gear, we are able to alter the speed of the oscillation cam to provide a consistent spool speed. This results
in an even line lay that provides excellent castability and manageability.
Cold Forged Aluminum Spool These spools provide increased strength and durability over diecast aluminum or
graphite spools.

®
Power Roller II This is an oversized line roller that reduces twist from casting and retrieving, and is enhanced with a
tapered area on the support to help the line get onto the roller quicker.
®
Power Roller III is an oversized line roller that reduces twist from casting and retrieving, and uses a cone-shaped
support to help get the line onto the roller quicker, with less chance of tangles or line cuts.
Waterproof Drag With the use of rubber gaskets, the drag is sealed against intrusion of the elements such as water
and dust.
®
Quick Fire II is a system used for easy and fast one-handed casting. The line and trigger self-center, and are within easy
grasp of the angler’s index finger. By pulling the line and the trigger with one hand, the bail opens and is ready to be cast.
TI Spool Lip The titanium coated spool lip provides incredible durability with today’s braided lines. It also drastically
reduces the friction during the cast, allowing for smooth, effortless casting distances.
Rubber Handle Grip is comfortable and soft to the touch.
Machined Aluminum Handle Shank for increased strength and power.
®
This drag adjustment system allows the angler to set the drag for the reel using the rear drag adjustment
knob. During the fight, the angler can quickly increase or decrease the amount of drag by using the Fightin’ Drag Lever.
Fightin’ Drag
®
Expanding upon the same features as Fightin’ Drag, Fightin’ Drag II allows the angler to quickly get
back to the original drag setting by utilizing a strike point on the Fightin’ Drag II lever. When the lever is moved to the
strike position, an audible click is heard and the lever snaps in to position.
Fightin’ Drag II

SR™-Concept
The SR-Concept combines the new concept of
Reliance with all aspects of the S-Concept:
Smooth, Silent and Strong. The Reliance
Concept, or R-Concept, means that dreams in
reel design are now evolving into reality. The
result of the use of the new S-R Concept in
design is the development of many exciting
new features.
SR-3D Gear This oversized drive gear was designed with
three-dimensional analysis. This allows the surface of each
tooth to be contoured exactly to the tooth shape of the
pinion gear. The result is more tooth surface of the drive gear
is in contact with the tooth surface of the pinion gear.
Smoothness, torque, efficiency and durability are all increased.
Rigid Support Drag This innovative new feature eliminates
spool wobble, even at light drag settings. So no matter what
your drag setting is, the spool will not wobble. The result is
an incredibly smooth drag even at extremely light settings.
SR Guard Fin The SR Guard Fins are coated with titanium.
You can find them strategically placed on the rotor and
several parts of the body to protect the reel from impact
damage.
SR Handle This handle screws directly into the drive gear,
resulting in zero play between the handle and gear. The
1000 size handle is a very thin solid shank, while the larger
sizes use a hollow handle shank, that reduces weight while
maintaining extremely strong and durable properties.
SR One-Piece Bail This one-piece bail wire has no gap for
line to snag on during normal operation. Made of stainless
steel, it reduces friction and allows the line to get onto the
line roller quicker.
All Weather Drag Using a water proof gasket, and 48 points
per turn of adjustability, the All Weather Drag is perfect for
any situation. The drag washers themselves are made of
natural wool which provides a wide range of settings, low
start up intertia, and excellent durability.

S-Concept
S-Concept represents Shimano’s initial philosophy on
which many of our spinning reels have been designed. The
three basic ideas that are inherent in the S-Concept are
Smooth, Silent and Strong.
Smooth rotation and comfortable retrieve, coupled with excellent drag
performance and longer casting distance, leads to our smooth,
flawless operation.
Silent operation of parts within the reel’s construction represents the
attention to tight tolerances, reducing excessive noise and resulting in
the silent operation of our reels.
Strong, solid and functional construction leads to powerful torque and
durable drivetrains. This gives anglers the strength and confidence
they need to battle elusive gamefish.
The new sizing of our S-Concept reels offers anglers a bigger spool and
smaller body, resulting in a lighter, more comfortable fishing experience
without sacrificing line capacity.
The end result are reels offering anglers smooth, silent and strong reels
that are designed for years of fishing use. The knowledge of fishing
and the minds of Shimano’s engineers have given today’s angler
state-of-the-art reels that are ready for any challenge.
Super Slow Oscillation® The Super Slow Oscillation system evenly
layers line onto the spool, reducing the gaps between the line wraps
that can cause unwanted friction or hang-ups during casting. By laying
the line in an extremely tight parallel pattern—when a layer of line is
wrapped on top of a lower layer of line—there are no crevices or gaps
www.shimano.com
Wide Diameter Drive Gear A wide diameter
drive gear that is 1.28 times larger than those
in previous Shimano® spinning reels provides
more torque and an easier retrieve.
Direct Drive Mechanism The drive gear is
directly attached to the handle, which means
power is transmitted more efficiently with less
vibration while increasing durability.
Black Almite Super Duralumin Drive Gear
The drive gear is made of A7075 series Super
Duralumin aircraft grade aluminum alloy for
high strength and low weight. It is further coated with a layer of Black Almite, a microscopically thin coating that provides scratch resistance
and increased corrosion resistance to saltwater.
Low Wear Rate Pinion Gear The pinion gear
has twice the hardness of its predecessors,
achieving lower wear rate, more durability and
greater longevity.
Stopperless Design means there is no antireverse switch. This means that Stopperless
Designed reels offer maximum protection
against dust and water intrusion.
for the upper layer to embed itself into. When the bail is open and the
reel is cast, the line flows effortlessly off the spool for a longer cast than
found with a traditional oscillation system. Reels with this feature also
come with extra spool support washers to optimize the winding shape
based upon line diameter.
Slow Oscillation This oscillation system is more advanced than
Aerowrap®, which uses a criss-cross line lay to reduce friction. Instead,
slow oscillation uses a tightly packed parallel pattern to reduce the
chance of the upper layer of line grabbing the lower layer, creating
unwanted friction. The result is an evenly shaped line lay, with
excellent castability and control.
S-Arm Cam Line slack around the line roller is the main cause of line
trouble during casting and retrieving. The S-Arm Cam has a protruding
lower surface on the bail arm that helps prevent slack that would lead
to line cuts or tangles.
S-Rotor This high precision rotor is compact and lightweight.
Designed with 3-D surface modeling software, the S-Rotor ensures
a comfortable retrieve.
S-Guard These guards are designed to prevent impact damage to the
frame and rotor. Certain guards, depending on location, also feature
weep holes to prevent water accumulation within the reel.
S-Finish is a multi-coated treatment that not only produces a beautiful
finish, but is more durable than previous finish types.
S-Shield Body Shields at the rotor and handle prevent harmful sand
or water from entering the drivetrain.
S-Bail The flexible and light spring material used for the bail helps to
avoid a “bent bail wire” situation which leads to improper bail operation.
Manual Bail Trip Reels equipped with manual
bail trip do not have an auto trip mechanism
and the bail must be closed manually. This feature brings added line
control during freespool that is imperative to anglers seeking big game.
Maintenance Port The maintenance port is an easily accessed hole
strategically located for easy maintenance of the reel. Using a slot-head
screwdriver, the rubber sealed plug can be removed from the reel. One
drop of lightweight oil or grease can be applied to the drivetrain to
prevent corrosion and to protect the smooth retrieve of the reel. Be sure
to not over-lubricate the reel as excessive lubrication can cause the reel
to become sluggish. Also, after-market spray lubricants may contain
cleaners and degreasers that can actually remove the grease and oil
which protect the reel. This may cause premature corrosion or damage
to the reel. Before using an after-market lubricant, we recommend that
you contact our Customer Service Department at
1-877-577-0600 to be sure it will not damage your reel.
Disk Drag is a large diameter drag disk made of the same material
used in our Tiagra reels and is located under the arbor of the spool.
Twin Disk Drag uses 2 large diameter drag disks made of the same
material used in our Tiagra reels for unbelievable amounts of smooth
drag performance.
Forged AL Spool with Ti-Coated Zirconia Spool Lip The cold forged
aluminum spool has a lip made of titanium-coated zirconia which is
10 times harder than stainless steel. Zirconia is an ideal material for
use in hostile environments and with today’s braided superlines.
Pure Carbon Drag Washer The drag washer is made of pure carbon. It
provides reliable, durable and smooth drag performance at all settings.
Septon®* this handle grip material is soft to the touch and does not
get slippery when wet.

So, go ahead, fish the flats, fish the backwaters and rest assured, we’ve
protected your investment!

A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings) A-RB bearings are
stainless steel ball bearings that have been through
the A-RB treatment process which makes them at
least 10 times more corrosion resistant than
standard stainless steel ball bearings (see page 102
for more information).
®
Super Stopper II Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses
a one-way bearing that eliminates backplay. This
provides the angler with instant hooksetting power. In
some reels, the Super Stopper II can be turned off to
allow backreeling for special techniques and situations.
®
Power Roller II This is an oversized line roller that
reduces twist from casting and retrieving and is
enhanced with a tapered area on the support to help
line get onto the roller quicker.
®
Power Roller III This is an oversized line roller that
reduces twist from casting and retrieving, and uses a
cone-shaped support to help get the line onto the roller
quicker, with less chance of tangles or line cuts.
Cold Forged Aluminum Spool These spools provide
increased strength and durability over diecast
aluminum or graphite spools.

the retrieve by counterbalancing the rotor to enhance
sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing,
an approach similar to car tire balancing, we are able to
redistribute the rotor weight to create smooth rotation and
eliminate vibrations caused by the reel.
®
Fluidrive Fluidrive brings the highest tolerances and
utmost control in the gear cutting process, which
provides the angler a smooth, powerful retrieve.
TI Spool Lip The titanium coated spool lip provides
incredible durability with today's braided lines. It also
drastically reduces the friction during the cast allowing
for smooth, effortless casting distances.
Waterproof Drag With the use of rubber gaskets the
drag is sealed against intrusion of the elements such
as water and dust.
®
®
Fluidrive II Building upon the successes of Fluidrive,
which provides extremely tight tolerances and control
in the cutting process, Fluidrive II polishes gear
surfaces to maximize tooth contact which increases the
efficiency of the retrieve for more power with less effort.
®
Floating Shaft With this feature, using a bearing or
bushing, friction is reduced between the pinion gear and
spool shaft for increased smoothness and durability.
Baitrunner The Baitrunner lever, providing a
secondary drag system, allows an angler to feed out line
in tension-controlled freespool with the bail closed. This
enables the angler to let the fish take the bait and run,
while maintaining line control by having the bail closed.
To engage the primary drag and set the hook, simply
turn the handle or flip the Baitrunner lever to the
“Baitrunner Off” position and the fight is on.
Rubber Handle Grip is comfortable and soft to
the touch.
®
Aerowrap This two-speed oscillation system layers
the line onto the spool in a criss-cross pattern that
reduces line-to-line friction for longer casts. Aerowrap
reels utilize a worm gear design to move the spool
upward quickly and downward slowly to wind the line
in a precise pattern, reducing friction and giving
smoother, longer casting ability.
Aerowave™ This oscillation system incorporates the
strength of a standard system with some of the line
winding performance advantages of a two-speed worm
driven system. Aerowave will wrap the line onto the
spool so that it does not dig into itself and reduces the
chance of the line stacking at one end of the spool.
The result is an extremely strong system that provides
longer casts and a smoother feeling when a fish is
pulling drag than standard oscillation systems.
142
Machined Aluminum Handle Shank for increased
strength and power.
Metal Series The metal construction showcased in
some of our finest reels now appears throughout our
line of Metal Series products. Metal frames not only
keep moving parts in precise alignment, they also
feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating and
painting techniques for beautiful and durable finishes.
Platinum Service Plan With the Platinum Service
Plan, when you submit your Warranty Registration
Card, you will receive coupons for discounts on “clean
