However, our Thrift Shop on Market Street in Ventura is getting Better and Better each month as new donated items arrive and are made available for sale! Please help us out by telling your friends, neighbors and family about who we are and what we do! We have had several very tough years – even though adoptions are down, costs are up, and people are still appear to be abandoning animals at a record rate! Our volunteers are wonderful and continue to share their skills and time, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help too! If you have items to donate, please call Phyllis at 805649-6913. We are now able to accept some larger items since we have expanded our thrift store sales area! Please check out our cat room and store too! If you have a few hours available to spend with us to help us sort and sell items to help our foster cats, please contact Phyllis at 805-649-6913 CCR Adoptions and TNR (Trap,Neuter, Return) statistics: In the last 12 years, over 6000 Cats Cradle Rescue cats and kittens were adopted to loving homes! Over 100 kittens and cats are currently being fostered in CCR volunteers’ homes. TNR (Trapped, Neutered, Returned) over 400 feral felines in 2012. TNR – Over 1000 Spayed/Neutered Feral cats are being cared for on a daily basis by volunteers at more than 25 feral feeding sites in Ventura County. CCR Summer BBQ Cats Cradle Rescue Volunteers got together for a potluck and barbeque celebration one afternoon this summer at volunteer Lisa Kuklenski’s home in east Ventura. About two dozen of our valued volunteers were able to attend. Bodacious BBQ was expertly cooked on an outdoor grill by Lisa’s husband, Robert, and everyone sampled an array of delicious potluck appetizers, salads, and desserts. Stories were shared, games were played, and the guests were treated to visits with Lisa’s foster kittens too. Phoenix meets Frankie Shared by Mary A. I wanted to let you know that I did find a playmate for Phoenix. Shirley at the thrift store adoption told me she had a cat she hadn't brought that might work out. I went back last week and adopted Frankie. Phoenix However, to me Frankie just doesn't fit and I've been calling him Tigger. He reminds me of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. He is around a year and a half old, and a very BIG boy! But, he is very laid back and has adjusted really well. When Phoenix first saw him she got so upset that she made herself sick and I spent almost 30 minutes cleaning up after her. I kept him in the bathroom that night and let him out the next day. Phoenix was still upset, but handled it much better. She still spends most her time hissing and spitting at him, but at the same time they will play tag up and down the hall. I think part of her problem is that he is so much bigger than her even though he has shown no sign of being aggressive with her. He really is just the opposite of her and I think in time they are going to do really well together. I'm including a couple of pictures. Frankie Our Happy Endings! An Oldie, but a Goodie! Shared by Jennifer, a CCR volunteer Dear wonderful people! We adopted "Miss Kitty" (formerly Eeney) just a year ago and she has been the light of our lives ever since. Thank you for all the wonderful work that you do to save these beautiful creatures. Here are a few pix to make you smile! Tom & Chris Reed As a baby about 4 months old. Now... as our beautiful girl! This is Bebe, 12 years old, whom I adopted about two months ago. She is a Himalayan/Tabby mix with huge blue eyes. She is a truly chubby cat with a great personality. She loves to lie on her back and watch the world from that perspective. Maybe she's right; maybe it looks better that way. She fit in easily with my other 5 cats of various ages and can hold her own with the cat who thinks she's in charge. She sort of stomps when she walks around the house, loves to drink out of glasses, especially mine, even though she has her own glass which now sits in a pie dish on the floor. She is just an all around character and brings me a lot of laughs. In Loving Memory… Sharon Stover Stuart Little – 2012 to 2012 Wiley (dog) - 10/30/2000 to 10/29/2012 Becky, Kourtney, Little Mamas, and Tripod (cats), Sammy (dog) (ages unknown) Tisha Roady March 1991 to Sept 2011 (A very talkative Tonkinese) Baby (dog) - 2012 to 2012 June 13, 1964 to Oct. 13, 2012 From a cat........ When Humans die, they make a will To leave their homes, and all they Have to those they love. I too would make a will, if I could write. To some poor, wistful, lonely stray I'd leave my happy home, My dish, my cozy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy, The well-loved lap, The gently stroking hand, The loving voice, The place I made in someone's heart, The love, that at the last Could help me to a peaceful, painless end Held in loving arms. If I should die, Oh! Do not say: "No more a pet I'll have To grieve me by its loss." Seek out some lonely, unloved cat And give my place to him. This is my legacy, The love I leave behind, 'Tis all I have to give. -- Margaret Trowton -Check out our webpage and our adoptable cats! She'd found some kittens and needed help finding them homes. She and Cheryl, her sister, used to bring them every weekend until they were all adopted and slowly became more involved in the adoption process and continued to foster for Concerned People for Animals (CPA). As we developed and expanded the foster-adoption program, she became more and more involved. And the rest is history. She had a small feral colony at her apartment that she maintained and somehow got involved with saving the cats at the port. It took her almost a year to trap and alter close to 100 cats there. Some of them had mange mites which required trapping them, treating them and holding them for 2 weeks so that they could get additional treatment before releasing them. I coerced her into replacing me as the adoption coordinator when I became President of CPA and joining the Board.” “She was a voice for the voiceless, and she had a big voice. There must be a lot of animals up there who need guidance, and she was called to show them the way. Sharon will be greatly missed.” Editor’s note: Sharon touched many lives and many people shared fond memories of her at the Star’s website. Two were included above. Spay Day at Valley Vet Non-Profit Clinic SPAN – Spay/Neuter Animal Network, partnered with Cats Cradle Rescue to sponsor a spay day in September at Valley Vet Non-profit in Simi where 93 feral cats and kittens from the Oxnard and Port Hueneme area were fixed in one day. These cats are part of our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program where feral cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, given rabies vaccinations, and other care, if needed, recovered under observation for 24 to 48 hours (or longer if necessary) then returned to the location where they were originally trapped to live out their lives. We also work to make sure they have enough to eat and some sort of shelter in cold weather. On Feral Day in September 85 cats were spayed or neutered, but 93 were rescued. Not all made it and several were kittens too young to fix. During October's Feral Day 37 cats were spayed or neutered and 2 kittens were rescued, Andrew and Scotty (their stories follow this article). More than 400 feral cats have gone through our TNR program in 2012. Here are some photos showing the recovery area in a CCR volunteer’s garage. The cats are kept covered to reduce stress (brown covers) since they are not accustomed to human contact. Andrew’s Halloween Adventure shared by Karen Ryan On a Monday night right before Halloween Andrew happened to walk into a humane cat trap, and he hasn’t looked back. This bright green-eyed boy was one of the lucky few, because he was rescued by a CCR volunteer who soon realized he wasn’t feral, just scared, during the Valley Vet October Spay Day. His white coat was a huge target for predators and for the almighty sunlight, aka skin cancer. Like many stray and feral kittens Andrew had quite a few parasites that needed addressing, but he took all his medications like a little trooper. Andrew’s first night in his new home was spent watching the other kittens run and play, but he was just happy to be warm and well fed. Once Andrew was given the all clear, he needed a good bath; he joined in on the ruckus at his foster’s mom home. He is very playful, gets along well with other cats, and he has the loudest purr motor in the household, especially when his belly is being rubbed. Andrew will be available for adoption after Thanksgiving. (Editor’s note: Cats with pink noses and mostly white coats are many times more likely to develop deadly skin cancers when they live outdoors.) Adopted 11-25-12 Scotty’s Story (as told by Scotty and transcribed by Karen Ryan) One Saturday night not long ago I walked into a humane cat trap, and that was the luckiest night of my life. Of course, at that time I didn't think or feel that I was lucky, but I was. I let my trappers know thatt I was a friendly boy, and they found this nice woman to foster me until I can find my forever home. I had to stay in an enclosure after being neutered, it didn't help that I had quite a few parasites like most stray outdoor kitties. Once I was able to stretch my legs, so to speak, I let my foster mom know that my back leg hurt. For a while I have had some pain in my left rear leg, and at times I didn't like to use it. I didn't know that would mean another visit to Valley Veterinary Non Non-Profit Clinic, but off I went. Dr. Amsel examined my leg, and thought I needed an X-ray. So off I went to another veterinary hospital to have my leg X X-rayed. It was determined the ball at the top of my left rear femur had been fractured off and I had shards or slivers of bone. Another surgery for me was scheduled to remove the ball and smooth the end of the bone. My surgery went well, and now I'm on the road to recovery. I'm not sure how long I will need, but my foster mom made sure I had a nice comfortable spot ot to recover. Los Angeles Ave Simi Valley, CA 93065 Taffy is looking for a happy ending. All of his littermates have found loving homes, but for some strange reason this beautiful boy is still available for adoption. He is a wonderful loving cat at home who gets along well with the newest younger kittens that keep showing up at his foster home. He isn’t fond of the activity at adoptions and do doesn’t show his true loving nature when his foster mom isn’t able to stay at the adoption site with him. Taffy reluctantly resides at PETCO in Ventura on most Saturdays so come by and meet him. Boomerang This kitten was brought to our rescue center on Market arket Street in Ventura with another unrelated kitten on Sunday 5-27-12 He was only about a month old and very small for his age, dehydrated and emaciated. Cats Cradle Rescue volunteers were able to bring him back to good health and he is now a very lively, affectionate and playful little boy. He is a very playful kitten who loves to be on your lap the minute you sit down! He is a talker and will answer you when you talk to him and also has a purr that is non-stop. non He has a lot of energy and loves to play with the other foster kittens in his home. He would also love to play with the adult cats, but has to be content with an occasional snuggle. Baby came into CCR’s adoption program as a six week old kitten. He was one of a litter of five kittens born to a feral cat in Oxnard. A very nice woman found the litter at a couple of days old and moved them into her garage along with their Mama. She then took the time to talk the to the mama kitty and hold the babies every day. Baby and his litter mates were all very friendly and outgoing kittens. Baby was adopted from CCR as a baby but his adoptive family had to return him when their apartment complex was sold and the new owners would not allow any pets. Baby is very affectionate, playful, curious, and walks on a leash. This Old Cat I'm getting on in years, My coat is turning gray. My eyes have lost their luster, My hearing's just okay. I spend my day dreaming Of conquests in my past, Lying near a sunny window Waiting for its warm repast. I remember our first visit, I was coming to you free, Hoping you would take me in And keep me company. I wasn't young or handsome, Two years I'd roamed the street. There were scars upon my face, I hobbled on my feet. I could sense your disappointment As I left my prison cage. Oh, I hoped you would accept me And look beyond my age. You took me out of pity, I accepted without shame. Then you grew to love me, And I admit the same. I have shared with you your laughter, You have wet my fur with tears. We've come to know each other Throughout these many years. Just one more hug this morning Before you drive away, And know I'll think about you Throughout your busy day. The time we've left together Is a treasured time at that. My heart is yours forever. I Promise - This old cat. ~ K.C. Bigamon Cats Cradle Rescue has a number of older cats also looking for homes. A few are special needs, but many are friendly, loving, and well-socialized with cats and other animals. Please consider adopting one of our higher “mileage” foster cats. Because we are a no-kill rescue group, we can only take cats (and kittens) to foster when we have space available in a foster home…. And we only have space available when we have good people deciding to adopt our adult cats (and kittens). Our president constantly gets calls and voicemails from people who, for various reasons, need to re-home older cats… often she has to say “no” since sometimes we just don’t have a foster home available for an adult kitty. As always, always, we we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks thanks to the organizations that helped helped us immensely in our rescue efforts again this year. year. • The PETCO Stores in Port Hueneme, Hueneme, and Ventura, Ventura who generously provide space and support for our weekend adoptions and rescue operations. www.petco.com. • Petsmart, Petsmart who recently agreed to allow Cats Cradle Rescue to hold weekend adoptions in the Oxnard store. • Dr. Chong, Chong, DVM and her friendly assistants at the Camarillo Veterinary Hospital who work tirelessly to heal the sick and injured cats and kittens we encounter in rescue.
