KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL
Dear Parents
The SD was buzzing to the sound of design and construction on Monday
morning with Years 4-7 involved in a workshop run by the Bloodhound
Project. The Bloodhound team are designing a car that will first of all break the
land-speed barrier and then hopefully break the 1000mph mark. After a
presentation, the boys had to create and build their own mini-rocket cars –
a great introduction to engineering for them.
Last Friday’s Mufti Day brought the usual array of wonderful outfits and ideas,
as we all dressed in a musical theme. My attempt, turning out as a conductor,
left many boys thinking I had come as a magician! We had a very interesting
talk (to each department) about the work being done and raised a fantastic
sum – over £900. Thank you to everyone for their donations.
There’ve been plenty of matches taking places and some good performances,
particularly the Year 3s who won all bar one of their games away at
Shrewsbury House. We are looking forward as well to Saturday’s block fixture
against Danes Hill, with all of Years 4, 5 and 6 and nearly all the U13 teams in
action. It promises to be an exciting morning so do come along and support.
The first outings of the year have been taking place. Year 6 have been to visit
Kingston Synagogue, as part of their studies of the main world religions, while
Year 2 have been to Chessington Zoo for their Science work.
As I write this on Thursday morning, the first round of the Michael Stuckey
Memorial Prize is taking place. Good luck to all the boys taking part and we
look forward to seeing the finalists in action in just under two weeks.

Caterpillar Class went on a lion hunt … and found a lion!
Dear Parents
Last Friday we all dressed up with a musical theme for Oxjam and Mrs King came in and told us how the money raised would
help buy buckets to enable children to collect clean water. Thanks to your generosity the Nursery raised an incredible £900.
Thank you as always for your support with our charity events.
We have been talking about harvest this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed a wide range of activities relating to
fruits of the earth! They have painted with vegetables, made soda bread, measured seeds on the maths table and sung
‘Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green’. Last term the Caterpillars took home sunflowers that they had planted at Nursery and
Keira must win the prize for the largest sunflower head I have ever seen. Keira kindly donated it to the class and the children
have been busy harvesting the seeds with tweezers, a super activity to enhance fine motor skills. Thank you so much Keira.
In the Caterpillar Class the children have been busy making their own binoculars. They then set off around the classroom
searching for lions. Our intrepid explorers did not give up and after much searching and carefully listening for roars they found
a lion. I don’t know who was more excited the children or the teachers!
Wishing you all a relaxing weekend.

Notes from the Junior Department
Dear Parents
Following a determined performance at Shrewsbury House on Friday, Y3 put in a tremendous effort against Kings College Wimbledon in
their second football fixture of the year. It was great to see so many parents supporting our sportsmen, who were excellent
ambassadors for the school. Year 2 enjoyed their trip to Chessington Zoo where they were fascinated by the penguin feeding and
delighted to see the big cats near the end of the day. Mrs Doliveux and Miss Mathieson would like to thank the parents who helped
make the trip possible. On Thursday, 3S performed their assembly all about descriptive writing. The stunning imagery they created
through the delivery of their own compositions was very much appreciated by the audience, as was the tuneful singing accompanied by
sign language at the end. There has been a huge effort at a whole school level on the charities front and it was fascinating to hear from
Mrs King in assembly on Friday about with work of Oxjam. I was therefore particularly impressed on Monday, when Pearce in Y2
brought into school the proceeds from the sale of some of his own toys and asked for the money to be donated to the school charity.
Well done, Pearce! Next Friday at 2pm we have our Harvest Celebration in St Matthias Church. This is just for parents in Reception and
Year 3 due to the number of adults we are allowed in the church. We look forward to seeing you there.

Year 3 fixture report vs Shrewsbury House & KCS
Friday afternoon saw the year 3’s head over to Shrewsbury House School for a full complement of
thrilling fixtures. The boys’ enthusiasm made for a positive mind-set going into all 8 matches and this
was well-reflected in both the performances and the results the boys achieved against a historically
strong opposition. A dry surface was not conducive to the quality brand of football much revered here at
King’s House School; however an astro-turf surface levelled the playing field both literally and
figuratively. Courageous play by the B’s, C’s, D’s & E’s meant they walked off the field comfortable
winners; however, despite the great array of skills on display the A, F, G & H teams fell just short.
Promising signs from all teams were clear though as we headed into a second set of fixtures on the
following Monday morning against another strong school in KCS.
Improvements were indeed made throughout and, whilst being insufficient to overcome our Wimbledon
counterparts, the overall performances were ones to be proud of. KCS’s year groups are almost double
those of King’s throughout the school and this fact proved too great to deny though we were far from
second best in many games. The A’s lost 3-0 in a bitterly disappointing match in which they saw the
better of both possession and the opportunities but, caught on the break, were unfortunate in a
misrepresentative margin of defeat. Defeats elsewhere were equally unfortunate however we should
note the valiant display from the C team, a 1-1 draw proving the pick of the results, an excellent
achievement against such a strong side.

Year 6 Trip
Kingston Synagogue
By Nathan
Once we had arrived at the synagogue we were
taken into the main hall where we sat at the
front near to the Torah. The seating
arrangements in the main hall meant that men
and boys have designated seats at the front of
the hall. After taking our seats we had a guide
talk about the different colours that the Torah
(Old Testament scrolls) gets dressed in. At this
time of year the clothes were white since it’s
the Jewish New Year.
Soon after, we were split into two groups. One
of the groups went into a separate room to
learn about the Passover (Pesach) and my group stayed in the main hall to learn about the
Sabbath (Shabbat). We learnt how on the Shabbat Jewish people such as myself eat a special
type of bread called Challah. We also learnt about how you cannot cook on the Sabbath so hot
meals have to be prepared on the Friday and kept in a hot tray to stay warm. There are also no
mobile phones allowed for Orthodox Jews on Shabbat as well as no driving of motor vehicles.
Also, men and women can only eat bread after the Shabbat service.
The groups then swapped rooms and we then learnt lots about the Pesach and also the story of
the Passover and the 10 plagues. We also learnt about the matzah and how Jews eat it
because it is unleavened bread. We eat this type of bread because in the time when the Jews
escaped from Egypt there wasn’t time to bake the bread.
Both groups were then brought together for a final talk before we left to go back to school.
The synagogue trip was really interesting and I really like it.

One day a week can make a world of difference
KHS will be having a meat free Monday 5th and Monday 12th October
Why have a Meat Free Monday?
Eating more vegetables is not only great for your health but also good for the planet too! UN’s top
climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri states that “People should consider eating less meat as a way of
combating global warming. UN figures suggest that meat production puts more greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere than transport.”
The World Land Trust, an international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save threatened wildlife areas
around the world, are supporting Goodlife in their Meat Free Monday’s campaign.
World Land Trust, whose patron is Sir David Attenborough, are helping to combat global warming by conserving endangered
rainforests around the world by raising funds for their local partner to purchase threatened land and protect it as permanent
nature reserves. The trees on these reserves lock up carbon which would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere as
carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change. The reserves also protect all the wildlife that depend on these rainforest
habitats for their survival.
If you want to try meat free Monday at home or any meat free day try the following website for receipes
www.meatfreemondays.co.uk
Thank you, enjoy your veggies!!!
