Get a Preview Peek and Discuss Public Library
Documentary at Now Showing @ ALA
Filmmakers Dawn Logsdon and Lucie Faulknor present a behind-thescenes glimpse into the making of
their multi-platform documentaryin-progress, “Free For All: Inside the
Public Library,” as part of Now Showing
@ ALA on Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 12:00
p.m. at McCormick Place. A discussion and Q&A including Logsdon and
Faulknor follows the preview clips, with
introductory remarks from Nancy Pearl
(librarian, author, literary critic, and
NPR commentator) and panelists
Luis Herrera (San
Francisco Public
Library City Librarian), Wayne
Wiegand (Historian and Author), and Karen Kenton (National Endowment for the Humanities). The documentary, currently in development, explores the history, spirit
and challenges of the free public library,
bringing together public library stories
from across the U.S. and shedding light
on how public libraries have shaped
our society. The filmmakers will debut
footage from all three components of
their project – a national storytelling
booth, web videos and the featurelength documentary chronicling a year
inside one major urban library (San
Francisco Public Library) – and seek
feedback and input from the library
community during the post-viewing discussion. The preview clips will include
the trailer for the feature-length film at
SFPL, their first short web film featuring Queens Public Library immediately
after Hurricane Sandy, and humorous
and moving stories from users at the
storytelling booth. The filmmakers will also be showing clips and answering questions at
Networking Uncommons. They
invite those with
a compelling story,
historic images or
footage from a library to contact
them at info@free4allfilms.org.
“Free for All” was recently awarded
development funding from the National
Endowment for the Humanities, California Humanities, Creative Work
Fund, Friends of SFPL, San Francisco
Foundation and the Eastman Fund.
A preview is available at http://www.
freeforallfilms.org. Sponsored by Serendipity Films, LLC. Further information
is at www.free4allfilms.org and www.

school librarian’s central role in the
academic program through practicing instructional partnerships to
ensure success for K-12 students,

facilitators of community innovation
and change. Hudson-Ward and Wegner, trained in the Harwood method,
will share how they have been using
the tools, their results to date, and
the potential they see going forward.
They will also address questions on
how to effectively engage communities.
The session will provide an update on
this multi-phased initiative to provide
and the school librarian profession.
In “Real World, Real Tools,”
presenters Laura Pearle, Wendy
Stephens and Debra Logan will
prove serving your students and
teachers is still possible by focusing
on what your school library program
has rather than what is missing.
Organized around the powerful
system of common beliefs underpinning AASL’s Standards for the 21stCentury Learner, the presenters will
emphasize student access to a range of
reading materials and how to advance
an integrated learning environment
by promoting inquiry across the curriculum. Pearle, Stephens and Logan
will also look at encouraging both
intellectual dispositions and hands-on
research with digital authorship projects to enhance technology skills – all
while ensuring ethical information
behavior and equitable access to all
information sources for every student
in your building or district.

applicability of her findings to the challenges facing leaders in libraries of all
kinds, she will describe three common
patterns of leadership behavior and
illustrate them through free verse or
what she terms leadership vignettes.
Attendees will be invited to consider
their own ways of leading through

Explore Outreach Services During Bookmobile Saturday 2013
Libraries are extending their resources beyond their walls and into
the communities they serve every day.
Bookmobile Saturday, during ALA’s
Annual Conference, gives attendees the
opportunity to learn, gain inspiration
and network. Learn about the trends,
model practices and opportunities for
professional involvement during two
morning programs. Connect with colleagues from across the country during
the Bookmobile Saturday author lunch
and book signing featuring Lauren
Myracle and Audrey Niffenegger and finally explore some of the latest vehicles
during the Parade of Bookmobiles held
in conjunction with the ALA Diversity
and Outreach Fair.
Bookmobile Saturday runs from 8:00
a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on June 29 during
ALA’s Annual Conference in Chicago.
The day-long event will begin with a
panel discussion titled “Programming
from the Bookmobile,” led by members
of the Midwest Bookmobile & Outreach
Network, serving Northern Illinois and
Southern Wisconsin and held from
8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in room S106a of McCormick Place. Panelists will discuss
innovative programming ideas, issues,
technologies and best practices to engage bookmobile patrons of all ages.
A second panel discussion, titled
“OLOS & ABOS 101” will follow from
10:30 – 11:30 a.m., in room s106a.
Representatives from Association of
Bookmobile and Outreach Services
(ABOS) will discuss opportunities for
bookmobile and outreach staff through
professional development, growth and
networking through involvement with
the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) and ABOS.
Admission to both morning programs is free and open to all Annual
Conference attendees.
Following the panel discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to attend a luncheon from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
in the Clark 22 A-C room at the Hyatt
Regency McCormick Place featuring
Lauren Myracle and Audrey Niffenegger. Lauren Myracle is the author of The Infinite Moment of Us (August
2013), the New York Times bestselling
Internet Girls series (ttyl, ttfn and l8r,
g8r), Shine, Rhymes with Witches,
Bliss and the Flower Power series,
among many other books for teens and
tweens. Audrey Niffenegger is the author of the international bestsellers The
Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful
Symmetry, as well as a fine artist who
has published four illustrated books:
the latest book is Raven Girl, which
hit the New York Times bestseller list
earned a starred review in Booklist,
The Three Incestuous Sisters, The Ad-
venturess, and The Night Bookmobile.
Niffenegger also served as honorary
chair of National Bookmobile Day 2011.
The participation of Myracle and
Niffenegger is made possible by
Abrams.
After lunch, the program will move
to the Diversity and Outreach Fair in
the exhibits hall (MCP, Hall A1) for
the Parade of Bookmobiles from 3:00
– 5:00 p.m., part of the ALA Diversity
and Outreach Fair. During the Parade,
attendees can explore bookmobiles
and speak with bookmobile staff and
enter for a random prize drawing. The
parade is free and open to all conference attendees. Bookmobile Saturday is made possible through the generous support of
Farber Specialty Vehicles and OBS,
Inc.

programs and services for library users.
AASL to
Announce 2013
Best Websites
for Teaching &
Learning
The American Association of
School Librarians (AASL) will
announce the recipients of the
2013 Best Websites for Teaching
& Learning during the 2013 ALA
Annual Conference in Chicago.
The announcement will take
place at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday in
room E351 of McCormick Place.
Sites recognized as a Best
Website for Teaching & Learning
are free, web-based sites that are
user-friendly and encourage a
community of learners to explore
and discover. They also provide
a foundation to support AASL’s
Standards for the 21st-Century
Learner. The sites offer tools and
resources in content collaboration, content resources with lesson plans, curriculum sharing,
digital storytelling, managing
and organizing and social networking and communication.
Each website is linked to one or
more of the four strands of the
Standards for the 21st-Century
Learner – skills, dispositions in
action, responsibilities and selfassessment strategies.
Updated annually, the Best
Websites for Teaching & Learning list is based on feedback and
nominations from AASL members. School librarians can view
current and past recipients and
nominate their most used websites at www.ala.org/aasl/bestlist.

Ballard will recognize Dollar General
as the recipient of the 2013 Crystal
Apple during the AASL President’s
Program. The recognition will kick
off the program taking place at 10:30
a.m. on Saturday in room S105d of the
McCormick Place Convention Center.
The Crystal Apple honor is given at
the discretion of the AASL president

a significant impact on school library
programs and students. Since 2006, the
Dollar General Literacy Foundation
has funded the AASL beyond Words
grant program, which provides relief
to public school libraries affected by
disasters.
“I did not have to think twice about
the unique opportunity afforded to me
as AASL president to recognize Dollar
General with the Crystal Apple,” said
Ballard. “When I consider their unwavering commitment to ‘be there’ and restore school library programs to tens of
thousands of students after a disaster,
it is truly almost beyond words for me
to express heartfelt appreciation and
admiration for a corporate culture that
is devoted to doing the right thing.”

Now Showing @ ALA Film Program
Back by popular demand, the “Now
Showing @ ALA Film Program” will
offer a variety of films and documentaries throughout the day from Saturday
through Monday in S503a at McCormick Place. Many will offer a chance
to meet the film’s writer, director, or
subjects.
Saturday Showings
Bonsai People – The Vision of
Muhammad Yunus; 8:00 – 10:00 a.m.
What if you could harness the power
of the free market to solve the problems
of poverty, hunger, and inequality? To
some, it sounds impossible, but Nobel
Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus
has proven with a number of social businesses that it works.
“Bonsai People: The Vision of Muhammad Yunus” is a film that profiles
these companies, and shows the impact
that such entrepreneurial projects have
had on impoverished communities.
Citing examples like Grameen Bank
providing microcredit to small business
initiatives to Grameen Danone addressing malnourishment to Grameen Phone
and IT bringing telecommunications
to remote areas, Yunus explains how
to match social problems with new
services that provide opportunities for
economic and personal development.
These stories can fuel classroom discussion about the principles and ideas
that have made these social businesses
successful, and challenge students to
apply these universal social business
strategies to addressing issues in their
own communities.

Join the Social Responsibilities
Round Table (SRRT) and the Games and
Gaming Round Table (GAMERT) for a
film screening and panel discussion of
militarism and online gaming, featuring the documentary film Returning
Fire. Directed by University of Georgia
professor Roger Stahl, Returning Fire
is a sobering look at what video games
like Modern Warfare, America’s Army
and Battlefield are doing to users, our
political culture, and our capacity to
empathize with people directly affected
by the trauma of war. It features three
culture-jamming activists who infiltrated online war games in an effort to break
the hypnotic spell of “militainment,”
forcing us to think critically about what
it means when the tools of modern war
become forms of consumer play.
“Returning Fire” will be shown in its
entirety followed by remarks from the
film’s director Professor Roger Stahl
from UGA in Athens, Georgia and one of
the film’s three culture jammers Joseph
Delappe (Las Vegas, NV) plus audience
Q&A/discussion. This promises to be
a lively conversation affecting front
line librarians, collection development
specialists, and gamers. As a practical

programming in libraries. On Monday, toast the tenth anniversary of
the CCF and explore the house, with
tours available from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
and 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Support for this
event has been provided by Interactive
Design Architects, Elk Grove Graphics
and Library Furniture International.
Tickets for this event are available
for $75, and can be purchased at the
Ticketed Events counter in the Registration area in McCormick Place, South
Building.
The evening will include a cocktail
reception, with docents from the Frank
Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust available on site to answer questions. Transportation to and from the event will be
provided. The house, created in 1910
and located on the University of Chicago campus, is a bastion of American
architecture – a masterpiece of Prairie
style and forerunner of modernism.
More information about Robie House
can be found at: http://www.gowright.
org/research/wright-robie-house.html.
Proceeds from the event will benefit
the ALA Cultural Communities Fund.
Through a generous challenge grant
from the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the ALA Public Programs
Office established the ALA Cultural
Communities Fund to support cultural
programming in all types of libraries.
Ten years later CCF continues to make
possible high-quality professional development for librarians, development
of new program models and recognition
of excellence in library programming
through achievement awards. To make
a donation to CCF in honor of ten years
of outstanding and important work,
please visit www.ala.org/ccf.
The ALA Cultural Communities
Fund is an initiative of the ALA Public
Programs Office, which promotes cultural programming as an integral part
of library service in all types of libraries. The unit assists librarians across
the country by providing leadership,
resources, training and networking opportunities in order to provide library
users of all ages with cultural opportunities. For more information about the

How Much Money Is Enough?
When it comes to library funding, there
really is no such thing as enough.
Everyday, thousands of dollars walk out the front doors
of libraries across the country. We think this is sad, but
also preventable. Take a look at the website below, then
stop by our booth and tell us what you think. For your
time, we have a $5 Starbucks card for the first 50 people
who come by with today’s coffee code.

The ALA Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment
(HRDR—previously known as the Office for Library Personnel Resources
(OLPR)) will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday from 12:00 – 1:30
p.m. in the ALA JobLIST Placement
Center located in the south building,
level 3, Hall A1 on the exhibit floor of
the Convention Center.
Established in 1973, the Office for
Library Personnel Resources (OLPR)
combined ALA staff activities in library
education, recruitment, and staff welfare to assist librarians and libraries in
areas concerned with the rights, interests, and obligations of library personnel. The Office functioned as a major
component within ALA to support areas
of librarianship as a profession. This
included individuals’ career goals and
the provision within library schools and
libraries of policies and practices that
enable staff to develop professionally.
In 1998, in order to more adequately
keep pace with changes occurring in
the field of training and development,
the name of the Office was changed to
the Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment.
Over the past 40 years, the office
has played a vital role in the areas
of education, staff development and
human resource management for the
organization and its members. Today, the office manages: the JobLIST

Born into the cultural fragmentation of diaspora and a world
citizen by default, the protagonist, named simply Dog, roams the
globe in a Sisyphean quest for home, unable to claim allegiance
to either creed or flag.
The ensuing journey unfolds as a fluid, cinematic tapestry of
emotion and experience, with the narrative woven together by
the protagonist’s biting observations on sex, politics, history,
religion, and philosophy.
