as the AISA State PRESIDENT’S AWARD Winner for 2009-2010
The AISA PRESIDENT’S AWARD program is sponsored by the AISA to recognize member schools
with outstanding educational programs. Criteria for winning the Alabama Independent School
Association PRESIDENT’S AWARD includes achievement in all areas of school excellence such as:
standardized testing, scholarships, academic scholars, academic competitions, professional personnel standards and development, accreditation, and other activities that celebrate excellence in
academics. AISA officials stated that Springwood School has attained a high level of excellence in
all areas of student and teacher performance, plant and facilities, student life, and community
involvement. Pictured below are some of Springwood’s AISA State Awards for the

Springwood Faculty Accomplishments
Mr. Warren Nolen -AISA State Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Mr. Warren Nolen for being named AISA 2A State
Secondary Teacher of the Year for 2010. In announcing the award,
AISA Executive Director, Don Oswald said “Warren Nolen richly deserves the recognition and accolades for his excellence, enthusiasm,
and concern. He consistently demonstrates that high expectations in
the classroom bring high performance.”
Mr. Nolen has 34 years of teaching experience and instructs Springwood students in world history, U.S. history, and economics. He serves
as the Springwood Scholars Bowl coach and the girls tennis coach. Mr.
Nolen and his wife, Dianne, are the parents of two Springwood graduates, Blair Nolen DeCoux’00 and Brett Nolen’04.
Mr. Nolen stated “being selected AISA teacher of the year is a once in
a lifetime joy. I accept the award on behalf of the entire Springwood
family. It’s a daily blessing to be able to work with such a wonderful
administration, faculty and student body.”
Mrs. Allyson Langley Matthews ’83
to lead Springwood High School
Allyson Langley Matthews, Class of 1983, will begin a new job when
school opens the doors in August. Mrs. Matthews will assume the
position of High School Director. Some of her responsibilities include:
curriculum and program development and evaluation for 7th - 12th
grades, monitoring all aspects of student life, and assisting Headmaster, Mr. Bill Parsons with other administrative duties.
Allyson Matthews is a 1987 graduate of LaGrange College where she
received a degree in Chemistry. Mrs. Matthews has been on staff at
Springwood over the last two decades teaching science. Anatomy, Life
Science, Biology, and Elementary Lab are some of the courses she has
instructed. She has also sponsored JV Cheer, Dance Team, SGA, and
Anchor Club.
She and her husband, Richard have three children. Their oldest daughter, Carrie, Springwood Class of 2008, attends North Georgia College in
Dahlonega. Langley is a rising 6th grader and Emily Jo will be four
years old in September. Richard and Allyson have also embarked on a
new business venture. They are the owners of Momma Goldberg’s franchisees in LaGrange and Columbus.
Mrs. Matthews contends that this new challenge is a natural fit for her
personality. She said “God gave me an insatiable curiosity that prompts me to want to figure out how to do things
more efficiently. Because Springwood is such an integral part of my family and of our community, I can’t think of a
better place to serve.”
Mrs. Terri Frazer Darden ’77 receives
National Counselor Certification
Mrs. Terri Frazer Darden’77 recently completed the final requirements of the National Certified Counselor certification process and received the prestigious distinction of becoming a National Certified Counselor. She was the counselor at Springwood from 2002-2007 and left for two years to continue her education, returning in
2009. Mrs. Darden has a BA in French from Auburn University, a Master’s in School
Counseling from Columbus State, and is a member of the American School Counseling Association and The Southern Association for College Admissions Counselors.
Terri is also a member of the Disaster Relief Team for the American Red Cross, serving as a Mental Health Volunteer. She has spent time volunteering for the West
Georgia Hospice's Camp Dogwood (a grief camp for children). She is also a member
of Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Chi Sigma Iota Honoraries.
Terri is married to Tom Darden'75 and they have three children, Hayley’04,
Frazer’09, and Alex (deceased). Hayley graduated from Wheaton College (Wheaton,
Illinois) in 2008 with a BA degree in political science, Bible and theology, and with a
certificate in urban studies. She currently lives and works in Washington, DC. Frazer
is a sophomore at Auburn University majoring in pre-physical therapy.

At Springwood’s Honor’s Day ceremony in May,
Mrs. Dana Miller was presented the
“Springwood School Service Award”. Dana is
the mother of three Springwood graduates:
Hadley ‘05, Trey ‘07, and Matthew ‘10. She was
recognized for generously donating her time,
talents, and financial support to numerous
Springwood projects and organizations over

Mr. Joey Strength, Springwood
Class of 1988, is the winner of
the 2010 Distinguished Alumni
Award. In May at Honors Day,
Joey was honored for his admirable achievements since high
school. The Alumni Association
thanks his former classmate, Mrs.
Jenifer Smith Ewing for nominating Joey for this award. Joey is a

Practice Group of one of the oldest law firms in Georgia and he

Jenna says that they both love being Wildcats! After 8 years as
a stay-at-home mom, Jenna went back to work last year as a
Math Remediation/small group teacher at WO Lance Elementary School in Lanett.

McKenzie Davenport and wife, Helen
Marie, had a baby girl on May 24,
2010. Her name is Helen Anne. The Davenports moved to Milledgeville, GA in June, where McKenzie is a CFO of a company.
Stephanie Siggers Pope lives in
Calera, AL with husband, Brian, and daughter, Piper. Stephanie
is the Interior Design Department Head and Senior Associate at Jake Sanders and wife, Tally, live in Norcross, GA with their
baby girl, Truss, who was born 10/10/2009. Jake is a Financial
Davis Architects. Stephanie graduated from the University of
Planner with Financial Network Associates, Inc.

Laura Fagan graduated magna
cum laude from Belmont University in Nashville in May with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations, with a minor in Music Business. Laura is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and was employed with Tower
Creative Consultants, a student-run public relations firm on
Belmont's campus. She's also a freelance writer and was
published in the Belmont Vision newspaper. Laura is
employed as a public relations practitioner with Deane,
Smith Media Innovations in Nashville. She is engaged to
marry Craig McClellan on October 30, 2010.
Frank Harrell graduated from Columbus State University
with a B.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice. He will be
attending Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO in
the fall.
Carrie Hicks graduated with honors in April from Jacksonville State University with a B.S. in Pre-health Biology and a
minor in Chemistry. Carrie will attend the Auburn University
College of Veterinary Medicine beginning in August. Carrie is
the daughter of Laurie Meadows Yates ’76. While attending
JSU, Carrie was an active member of Phi Mu Fraternity,
Freshmen Forum (SGA), JSU Ambassadors, Gamecock Orientation Leaders and Student Coordinator, and SGA Student
Activities Council. She was named homecoming queen runner-up in 2009. Carrie was a student worker in the office of
admissions and student life office, as
well. She was involved in Omicron
Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society,
Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society,
American Chemical Society, the Order
of Omega, Rho Lambda and Gamma
Sigma Alpha Greek honor societies.
Carrie’s contributions at Jacksonville
State also earned her university recognition as the 2009 Greek Woman of the
Year, Order of Omega Scholarship recipient, and the Alice D.
Cusimano Orientation Award.
Joey Johnson graduated magna cum laude from Clemson
University in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Financial Management and a minor in Accounting. At
Clemson, Joey was President of CLEMSONLiVE, a member of
the President’s Student Advisory Council and the Clemson
University Leadership Council. He was the treasurer of
Golden Key International Honor Society and completed the
Leader Shape Institute training. In June, Joey began work as
a professional development program associate in the Globalization Group with Colonial Life/Unum/Provident in Chattanooga, TN in a five-year executive training program.
In May Matthew Reynolds graduated from the United States
Air Force Academy on the Dean’s List after completion of the
Scholars Program. Matthew received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in English with a concentration in British Literature
and a minor in Philosophy. He was commissioned as a
Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame Nominations due by September 1, 2010
The Springwood Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2004 to recognize lasting athletic achievements of Springwood students. To be eligible for nomination, individuals must have the following:
 Must have attended Springwood for a minimum of 2 years and lettered in at least 2 sports.
 Must have displayed outstanding athletic performance, team leadership, and individual achievement in
sports supported by post-season honors (record-setting performance, district or state recognition, and/or
winning an individual championship).
 Will not be considered until more than fifteen years have passed since their Springwood graduation.
Springwood alumni, as well as faculty, parents, and coaches are invited to submit nominations by email. The
Springwood Alumni Council, current and former Springwood Administration and coaches will review all nominations. This year the deadline for receiving nominations is September 1, 2010.

Springwood School’s Interim Week
As part of our vision to create an environment of excellence, preparing individuals for life, Springwood realizes
the value of non-traditional learning experiences for students. For many years, job shadowing, community
service, field trips, and mini-courses have comprised the Interim Program for Springwood 7th—12th students.
Students and teachers alike enjoy the opportunity to interact beyond the confines of the traditional classroom.
SIFAT: Springwood 7th graders attended a Cross-Cultural
Awareness Retreat at SIFAT near Lineville, AL. They learned
valuable information and experienced hands-on activities in
the following areas: Around the World, Village Luncheon,
International Sharing/Missionary Testimonies, Technology,
and Slum Experience. The students participated in making
an inertia pump, worked in teams on the low ropes course
and walked across a suspended rope bridge. They enjoy various games encouraging team work and role-playing activities.

Class
Mini-courses: During Interim Week a variety of courses
are offered to 9th graders including scrap booking,
cooking, CPR and First Aid certification, jeopardy,
zumba, tennis, weird science, and mountain biking.
Job Shadowing: Springwood seniors job shadowed
during Interim. Seniors explored possible careers in
occupations such as medicine, law, dentistry, journalism, engineering, education, and business. Students
selected their work site and benefited from a first-hand
look at their prospective career choice. Students were
required to keep a daily journal, and write a 750 word
project report. on their experience.
Jekyll Island: For Interim, Springwood eighth grade
students visited Jekyll Island 4-H Center. Day
classes students experienced included marsh,
beach ecology, reptiles, seining, maritime forest,
north end study, and slough. Night classes included
night walk, astronomy on the beach, sea turtles,
volleyball, and campfire. Students at Springwood
have enjoyed this Jekyll Island trip for over 20
years.

Adventures
Day Trips: Sophomores spent Interim Week going on day
trips. Students toured the Hyundai Plant in Montgomery,
visited Pine Mountain Adventures, CNN and the corporate
office of Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta, and The Little White House
in Warm Springs.
Community Service: The Juniors spent Interim Week doing
community service. They worked in the local community
each day helping out the Chattahoochee River Development, the West Point Depot, the Chamber of Commerce,
and more. The students kept a journal of the tasks they
completed and wrote an essay detailing the impact of
service on the lives of both themselves and the recipients.
Campbell’s Labels for Education Program
Recently Springwood was a first prize winner in the Campbell’s Labels for Education
Artist Ambassador Sweepstakes. Mrs. Hollie
Zachry, wife of David Zachry’97, and mother
of Springwood kindergarten student, Miles
Zachry, entered the Artist Ambassador
Sweepstakes contest by registering on the
Labels for Education website. In May, she
was notified that Springwood School was
selected to receive an assortment of musical
instruments including a rhythm instrument
set, two acoustic guitars, a digital electronic
piano, a student violin, a handbell and deskbell set, a karaoke machine and a microphone valued at $2,004.45!! The Campbell’s
Company is sponsoring another contest
entitled “Save Big. Dream Big”. To help win
a Star Powered Music day for Springwood,

Since 1973, the Campbell’s Labels for
Education program has awarded schools
free educational equipment in exchange
for labels from Campbell’s products. It’s
a fun, easy program in which students,
their families and members of the
community can join together to seek a
common goal. Springwood has partici-
pated in the Campbell’s Labels for
Education program for the past 15 years
and will continue to participate. Those
interested in supporting Springwood
School and this program may help by
saving your proofs of purchase from
Campbell’s products and sending them in
to the school. Eligible products include
Campbell’s soups, bean products and
tomato juices, Franco-American gravies
and SpaghettiO’s, Pace picante sauce,
Pepperidge Farm products such as Goldfish, breads, croutons, cookies and
cakes, Swanson broths and frozen dinner
and V-8 vegetable juices and Splash.
Saving labels paid off in a big way for Springwood School last November. An eight year
team effort on the part of students, parents,
and many Springwood supporters reached a
goal of collecting 1.6 million Campbell Soup
Company labels earning a brand new minivan for the school!
ALUMNI CAN HELP BY SAVING

Springwood Summer Camps
SPRINGWOOD INAUGURAL FCA FOOTBALL CAMP -
Shown left are the attendees and administrators at the inaugural Springwood football Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
camp held in June at the school for boys ages 9-12. Each day
students were involved in offensive/defensive drills and plays,
snack and a devotion time. The camp was started to create at a
young age a love for the game and a love for Christ.
CHALLENGER SPORTS BRITISH SOCCER
CAMP was held in July at Springwood for the
second summer. Athletes from the area came
to hone their soccer skills and enjoy fellowship. The coaches, from Wales and England,
taught the campers improvement skills and
encouraged a love for the sport. The five-day
camp offered both full and half day sessions.
Purpose: Moonlight &
Magnolias is a fundraiser
to benefit Springwood
School – specifically to
help fund a necessary
transportation need, which
has been met through the
purchase of a 56 passenger/air-conditioned bus in
December 2009. With
growing enrollment and
significant increase in extra
-curricular activities, the
bus was a necessity. The
Board of Trustees agreed
to purchase the bus with
commitments for funding
from the Athletic Program,
Private donations, Wildcat
Workday and Moonlight
and Magnolias fundraiser.
A motivated committee
was formed to ensure the
success of this fundraiser.

This year’s membership in the Springwood Alumni Association runs July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
The annual dues are the major source of income for the association and are used to help fund Homecoming activities, Alumni Career Day, Alumni Basketball games and other events, as well as Alumni
Newsletters, and the Alumni Scholarship. Please complete the form below and mail back to support

The Class of 1980 is planning a 30th year reunion. They would like to invite the classes
from years 1978 thru 1982 to join with them. The reunion is tentatively scheduled
