In this issue, we look back on the club events and activities in 2013.
The past year saw the Highlands courses packed with games: the
Ladies Cup, Willy O’s 2 at the Third Nine, and the Third Quarter Round,
to name a few. These come with many other events elsewhere at the
club: the Chevrolet Spin launch, Porsche’s 50th anniversary, our charity
nights with the Villanuevas and the concert for the Yolanda survivors,
and our tribute to the recently departed National Artist, I.P. Santos.
We’ve had a year of devotion, as seen in our religious calendar, where
we remembered what’s most important in our hearts.
We also have our Club President, Jerry Tiu, on the cover with Mrs.
Lianne Tiu. They have joined us in many of our initiatives and events,
and now we take a closer look at the role the Club plays in their lives.
This year promises a lot for us, too, with the Midlands Lucky Nine
being the stage for the prestigious Belle Cup. Of course, April heralds
our anniversary celebration. The calendar is packed, and to think this is
just the first quarter we’re talking about. Life at the Club goes on in its
elevated style.
It is these events and amenities, enjoyed with the community, that
make life at the club the rarefied experience it is. See you at the Club!

It has been our pleasure at Creatives100 to work on this issue
of Highlands View, our first for the club. While working on this issue,
we discovered the community’s deep commitment to its values and
its members. From golfing events and the arts and culture nights to
children’s parties and religious processions, one can see the good that
comes from living at the Club.
The team witnessed this first-hand at the shoot with the Club
President Jerry Tiu. Over the course of two hours—and we’ve never
done a cover shoot in just two hours—we managed to shoot them
wearing three outfits and in several locations. These included the
walkway outside the Country Club, the garden near Highlands Hole #1,
the Spanish-inspired interiors of Marabella, and right outside the Spa &
Lodge.
In between takes, while Mrs. Tiu was getting her hair and makeup
retouched, Mr. Tiu would regale us with stories of the club in its early
days, describing the collective effort needed to make it the institution
it is today. In this very issue a contributor calls herself a “Tagaytay
Highlands Baby,” someone who grew up at the club, enjoying its perks,
and growing with it through the years. And it is this development that
the Club makes possible after so many years.
It is only appropriate that this issue falls on the club’s 20th year.
So, from Creatives100 to Tagaytay Highlands, we wish you a happy
anniversary.

For the first quarter of 2014, the Highlands Golfers Lounge and
all facilities within shall be closed every Tuesday, while the Country
Club shall be closed every Monday for maintenance work. Please bear
with us as we strive to bring you better facilities for your enjoyment.
The Membership Services Office is open everyday from 9:00 a.m.
to 6:00 p.m. from Mondays through Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
on Fridays and Saturdays, and 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays at
the Highlands Golfers Lounge.

To make sure your visit at the Club stays memorable and hassle
free, please be reminded of the following: kindly present your
membership card to the gate guards before entering the Club. Take
note that your membership card is non-transferable. In the event your
card expires, you will still be allowed entry, but you must renew your
membership at the Membership Office. In the case of lost or misplaced
membership cards, kindly present any valid ID to the gate guards,
proceed to the Membership Office to get a temporary card, and apply
for a replacement.
For our 20th anniversary, the Club will allow you to bring twenty
(20) guests during weekends, free of charge, and will charge PhP 500
for every person in excess of 20. In addition to this, we will allow the
issuance of multiple guest cards with a minimum consumable of PhP

400 to accommodate your guests. This will be valid from December 1,
2013 to May 30, 2014. For inquiries, please call or email us.
CONSUMABLES
As a friendly reminder, take note that the monthly dues include a
consumable amount of PhP 500 that accumulates over a period of six
(6) months (January to June and July to December). You may use your
accrued consumables until the last day of the accrual periods, after
which they will be forfeited in favor of your club.

For our members’ satisfaction and convenience, we at Tagaytay
Highlands made many fiscal adjustments last year in preparation
for the renovation programs planned for 2014. Tagaytay
Highlands’ General Manager Claire T. Kramer prioritized areas
concerning golf, operations, services, and employee welfare to
optimize the new developments.
For the amount of PhP 918,400.00, we fortified the riprap
structure of Hole 18 at Highlands Golf Course. We used PhP
239,999.70 to improve the Midlands Driving Range, allowing
golfers to practice their swings more easily. A new look, valued
at PhP 990,845.21, refreshed the interiors of Midlands Golfers
Lounge.
A new fleet of vehicles worth PhP 12,715,497.99 stands
ready to service our members and guests. Responding to

the growing community, the Highlands Holy Family Chapel
implemented its first phase of renovation, using PhP 1,609,363.00
to expand existing washrooms, incorporate a sacristy, and install
access ramps and washrooms for PWDs. A PhP 1,371,600.14
rehabilitation package restored the familiar charm of Camp
Highlands. The interiors of club outlets and function rooms like
the Highlands Peak Bar, The Library, Akasaka, The Breadshop,
Toscana, Zsa Zsa’s, LA Belle, Chosun, Marabella, and Highlands
Golfers Lounge were improved. We rehabilitated the Country
Club at Tagaytay Highlands during the last quarter of 2013 for
PhP 491,994.36, following the rehabilitation of the Highlands Golf
Club for PhP 11,259,244.24.
Finally, for PhP 277,761.63, we expanded the Employees
Cafeteria and refurbished it for sanitation and employee
convenience. New Managers Lounges, valued at PhP 135,200.16
and P329,851.94, will house the management team’s dining
and meeting room facilities at Highlands Golf Club and the
Administration area, respectively.

Golfers needing a break from the high-stakes game need
only look out toward the Taal Lake in the distance or the
adjoining Midlands course to refresh their nerves and rethink
their strategy. Even the tree-lined ravines and grassy hollows
can soothe many a fatigued player—if one forgets to see them as
hazards, that is. As usual, the cool Tagaytay breeze blows almost
constantly, energizing all it touches, and sometimes even aiding
a game or two.
With its challenging design, adjoining residential property,
and the breathtaking vistas all around, the Midlands Lucky Nine
is yet another jewel in the Highlands crown.

So far, the Midlands Lucky Nine has only been played by
select groups with the Belle Corporation’s blessing, but 2014
promises to see its opening to the general club membership.
This will begin with the 2014 Belle Cup, one of the first
tournaments to formally introduce the new nine holes to the
Midlands’ revered course.
Designed on a risk-and-reward concept by famed designer
John Olenoski, the Lucky Nine features many blind tee-offs,
encouraging bolder, more daring play on the green. To play its
doglegs, slopes, and narrow fairways, golfers will rely on their
instincts, inventiveness, and a little bit of luck.

In the Members Quarterly Challenge final season, leading the pack
was the Low Net Champion Henrick Tan with Edsel Opulencia for the
Low Gross Championship crown. Nissan UN Avenue Manila renewed its
contract for a PhP 500,000 hole-in-one prize, which excited many of the
golfers. However, no one bagged the prize for the quarterly’s final round
for 2013.
Nino Antonio Magsino at 80 led the Group I category, followed by
Ryan Monsalve. Edwin Cua at 85 won the Group II laurel, with RJ Tan as
runner-up. Anthony Eugenio at 92 conquered the Group III category,
followed by Terry So, while Group IV honors were given to category
champ Romigio Sarmiento and Lyndon Tan as runner-up. For the Ladies
Division, Roweno Bjorklund at 88 received the championship trophy with
Connie Mamaril in second.

The mighty tandem of Jae Won Gal and Angela de Villa at 59 won
the Third Members Quarterly Challenge Low Net title, while Joey Solis
and Jenz Tecson at 70, with a count-back of 3 birdies, bagged the Low
Gross quarterly crown on August 10, 2013, at the Tagaytay Highlands Golf
Course. For the group championship trophies, Richard and Anthony Tan
at 70 edged past Narcing Dimapilis and Edsel Opulencia at 73 for Group
I. At 82, Marcelino and Imelda Yu won the Group II title over Bruce Lee
and Jang Hyang Suk at 79 with a count-back of 2 birdies. Group III laurels
went to Rafael and Becky Albert at 84 followed by Emmanuel and Lyn
Gomez at 91 with 8 bogeys.
Special awards from Jack Daniels were given away. Estrella Bernabe
received a citation for the most accurate drive for her performance at
Hole no. 7. At 1 foot and 11 inches, Walter Villanueva pinned the Hole no.
12 prize, while tourney champ Jae Won Gal performed the longest drive
at Hole no. 15 with his spectacular 304 yards.

It’s the second season for the invitational game. Belle Corporation’s
Vice Chairman Willy N. Ocier hosted a tournament for club partners
during the soft opening of the third nine-hole course—known as the
Lucky Nine—at the Midlands Golf Club. The Tagaytay Highlands founder
also generously gave away exciting prizes for each participating team.
After the game, a luncheon was held at the Highlands Steakhouse to
celebrate their victory. The tournament serves as a site inspection for the
playability and possible full service of the new golf course by 2014, in
time for the Belle Cup.

The Tagaytay Highlands Ladies Federation made a rare WGAP sweep,
as they conquered all titles in 2012 and won another circuit crown in
June 2013. It was a back-to back-to-back win for the ladies, headed
by their Team Captain Sandy Prieto and President Rosalind Wee. They
dominated the three divisions of the Women’s Golf Association of the
Philippines Circuit, edging past Forest Hills Golf, Sta. Elena, and Aguinaldo
in Antipolo City.
This completed the Ladies Federation’s bid for a record grand slam in
local women’s golf history, following its victories in the 2012 WGAP Circuit
and the 2012 WGAP Cup. The Club offers its heartfelt congratulations to
the federation for this win.

THE 8TH TAGAYTAY HIGHLANDS
LADIES CUP
Celebrating lots of victories for 2013, the country’s leading golfing
ladies organized a grand 18-hole tournament at Tagaytay Midlands
Golf Club. Annually, the Tagaytay Highlands Ladies Cup (THLC) is well
attended, with the nation’s top-ranking public personalities and business
community bigwigs. Leading the ceremonial tee-off were Felix Ang,
President of CATS Motors; Willy Ocier, Vice Chairman of Belle Corporation;
Marixi Prieto, THLC chair; and Edgar Chua, Pilipinas Shell chair. Tagaytay
Highlands’ General Manager Claire Kramer gave the Ladies Federation
a plaque of recognition as they continuously gave honor to Tagaytay
Highlands in consecutive WGAP wins.
The annual THLC event is a fundraising drive for Ladies Federation’s
chosen institutions: The Sisters of Mary Boys and Girls Town and the Pearl
Buck Foundation in Silang, Cavite.

Last November 22, 2013 the Junior Chamber International (JCI)
Manila conducted its fund-raising tournament for the benefit of
Typhoon Yolanda survivors at the Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club. The
event was open to all JCI members as well as to JCI friends and affiliates.
The JCI Manila Chapter, formerly known as the Manila Jaycees, is Asia’s
first and premier leadership development organization under the JCI
global network, which was founded in 1947. Currently, JCI has 200,000
members worldwide.

The tournament up at Tagaytay Midlands looked under threat of
postponement the night before, as Storm Signal #1 was raised. Heavy
rain, combined with thunder and lightning, did not augur well. However,
as if by some divine intervention, Friday morning turned out to be dry,
although the skies were overcast. But conditions were perfect for golf,
and it wasn’t until we were on our way home or heading for one of the
watering holes in Alabang that the rain came down again.
Ziggy Pals was this month’s star out on the course. He scored 41
Stableford points, which propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. A
purple patch on the front 9, where he parred 3 consecutive holes was
the springboard for this excellent score. He only has a one-point lead
over Jim Wagner, so we are in for an exciting finish as the race for the
green jacket reaches a climax. The Moncurs can’t be overlooked either;
they are only 4 points off the lead as they remain tied in third place.
Ziggy will have his handicap adjusted by another 2 strokes, which makes
his task that much more difficult.
Second place went to Colin McDonald. Colin scored 39 points,
which is very creditable for someone playing off 16. In third place was Ian
Moncur Sr., with 37 Stableford points. Ian shot 43 on the front and 45 on
the back 9. That’s very steady golf, but he’s probably ruing the fact that
three double bogies crept onto his scorecard. The three points he let slip
there stopped him moving alongside Jim Wagner in second place on the
leaderboard.
Darren Gafford, playing with us for the first time since the
tournament down in Malarayat in May, seems free from injury now, as
he claimed fourth place with 36 Stableford points. Darren plays off 9, so
that was a very good score indeed. Jim Wagner edged out John Cope for
fifth place on count-back, with both players scoring 35 Stableford points.
How important will that extra point be to Jim come the year’s end?
Another tie for seventh place saw Philippe Tordjman get the nod over Jay
Ervine on count-back with them both scoring 34 Stableford points.
The end result is that we still can’t measure up anyone yet for the
green jacket. It looks likely though that our champion golfer for the
year will come from one of the leading four shown on the updated
leaderboard. Jim Wagner won his customary lowest gross trophy with
another excellent round of 77. Well done, Jim. We’ll probably have to
drop this award in 2014 and replace it with something that gives more
players a chance of winning. Phil Smith, who supplies us with the golf
bags and locker bags we raffle off each month, won the nearest the pin
trophy on Hole no. 3. I’m told it was only a matter of inches away from
being a hole-in-one.
Until then, may all your pars turn into birdies.

The Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club hosted the 20th Food Chamber
Annual Golf Tournament on June 21, 2013. The Philippine Chamber of
Food Manufacturers Inc. (PCFMI) is an advocate of promoting safe and
nutritious food that is compliant with local, national, and international

The Tagaytay Highlands and Midlands Golf Clubs played host
to the prestigious Mabuhay Miles Elite Invitational 2013. The annual
golf program serves as the highlight for Mabuhay Miles crème de la
crème membership. For the first time, the tournament played at the
mountaintop course on November 12, 2013, where nearly 300 Mabuhay
Miles members belonging to the Elite, Premier Elite, and Million Milers
gathered for a day of fun golf adventure and a superb gastronomic
experience. The event exuded a London feel, as the country’s flagship
carrier debuted its first European destination.
ICTSI TAGAYTAY MIDLANDS
CHALLENGE
Carl Santos-Ocampo won the Midlands title from August 12 to 16,
2013, beating the stellar cast of Elmer Salvador and Angelo Que, who
performed quite well in the Cebu and Malarayat legs of the tourney. He
even dominated the reigning Order of Merit champion Tony Lascuna by
six with a notable bogey-free 65 in the 36 holes. After this win, the
25-year-old Santos-Ocampo moved to No. 5 with his consolidated
earnings. However in the final chase, Lascuna emerged as champ of ICTSI
at Manila Southwoods last September.

It is another year for the BDO Friendship Cup Golf Tournament to
play on its home course. Celebrating its fourth year at the Tagaytay
Midlands Golf Club, the event is filled with excitement, as golfers vie for

or a Porsche for the elite players. Truly, the golf event strengthens the
corporate relationship among investors and partners in industry.

THE PORSCHE 911
In September 1963, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche
introduced the design for the Porsche 911 at the Frankfurt
Motor Show. Since then, the grand tourer has retained the
characteristic silhouette and the rear-mounted, flat-six engine.
In October 6, 2013, PGA Cars, the exclusive distributor of
Porsche in the country, held a weekend fun drive and brunch
for Porsche owners, Porsche Club of the Philippines members,
and motoring journalists. Fifty Porsches, mostly 911s with some
Caymans, Boxters, Cayennes, and Panameras, lined up on the
slope in front of the Highlands Golf Club and showcased the
grand tourer’s 50 years of history.
Introduced as a replacement to the 356 coupe, the 911 soon
became the company’s flagship design due to its reputation
at the 24 Hours of Le Mans annual endurance race, where it
was favored by drivers for quick starts enabled by its ignition’s
placement to the left of the steering wheel. The 911 has since
cemented its place in motorsport history with its various
iterations garnering over 30,000 victories at automotive
competitions.
To commemorate the semi-centennial of the Porsche
line frontrunner, the company has released the 911 50th

Anniversary Edition, which incorporates design cues from
across the vehicle’s production history into an updated model
based on the 911 Carrera S. Alongside the flyline profile and
front air intake slats characteristic of all iterations, the 50th
Anniversary Edition reintroduces the Sport Classic wheel with a
five-spoke Fuchs rim design last seen in 1989.
Perhaps the most important change to the 50th Anniversary
Edition is its wheelbase, which is 1.7 inches wider than that of
the original Carrera S, allowing greater traction and stability
through turns. These additions guarantee a smooth ride for the
speedsters among Highlands homeowners, even over the steep
hills of the Tagaytay countryside.

CHEVROLET SPIN
The Covenant Car Company Inc. (TCCCI) has chosen
once again Tagaytay Highlands as its venue partner to
launch its newest car model, a seven-seater, All-Around
Utility Vehicle (AUV), the Spin. Last year, the club hosted
the launching of the Trailblazer. The newest AUV in
town comes in three engine models: two diesel and one
gasoline. Alberto Arcilla, President and Managing Director
of Chevrolet Philippines-TCCCI, showcased the new
model as the latest option for urban motorists and young
families given its spacious, versatile, and efficient design,
and enough space to fit a golf bag or two. Chevrolet and
Tagaytay Highlands also recently renewed its Memorandum
of Agreement as co-presenters for the 2013 President’s Cup.

One of the club’s longstanding institutions, the Highlands Steakhouse
continues to serve classic cowboy cuisine from its lofty perch on the higher
reaches of the property. There, in its log-cabin interiors, with the antler
chandeliers and the rustic wooden furniture, diners partake of a cuisine that is as
timeless as it is comforting.
Here, the steak reigns supreme, with US Angus beef brought in and prepared
the way steak should be. The prime rib is itself a hefty slab of beef cooked to the
diner’s preference and served with steamed vegetables and corn on the cob. The
even larger rib-eye steak comes in at 30 ounces. Lightly seared on the outside and
sliced on the diagonal, the cooking process finishes at the table, with the diners
themselves grilling the meat according to their taste.
Executive Chef Rene V. Acol spent years on cruise ships that gave him
significant exposure to global cuisine, an experience he brings to the table at the
Steakhouse.

The rays of the rising sun filter through the fog that blankets the slopes,
making it seem like one is walking on the clouds. Some warmth seeps in
through the early morning chill. The dew still clings to the blades of grass. And
then, it comes: an awareness of one’s self in relation to the whole, a sudden
realization of the nature of things. It passes before one fully grasps it, but it also
waits, probably on another morning, over the next slope, at the roots of a tree.
Zen philosophers call this kensho, the brief flash of awareness or insight that
leads to satori, the deeper, greater awareness of the self. Such insights come
in natural surroundings, after one has spent enough time being in the present
moment. It is a perspective the Japanese art of haiku tries to capture in its
poetry, an experience distilled into three short lines that speak volumes.
Every so often, these moments of insight occur across the Highlands,
and have shone light on the lives of members in the two decades since its
establishment on the slopes of Tagaytay. For most members, they can find a
satisfactory example in their club president, Jerry Tiu. A cursory observation of
his actions in and around the Club can yield a host of suggestions on how the
community can provide moments of illumination that, ultimately,
point toward the common good.

TREASURE FAMILY TIME
More than anything, the Club is a place where families
gather. It is their retreat from the busy-ness of the city, where
they can gather and spend time with each other in peace and
tranquility. It is that safe space where family members can
watch each other grow and flourish.
One could say that the Tiu family grew alongside the
Club. As the community expanded its borders and built its
developments, the family added to its numbers. They spent
many a weekend on the slopes, where they would dine, hear
Mass, and spend time in each other’s company. This has carried
on to the present day. Most of the children have grown up,
but one can usually spot the father and sons shooting hoops
at one of the basketball courts, or most—if not all—of them
at the Steakhouse, the China Palace, or the chapel. The family
treasures their time together, especially on New Year’s Eve and
during Holy Week. For them, family comes first, and they drop
everything to be with each other.

SUPPORT THE ARTS
The Club’s serene surroundings offer a quiet space in which
inspiration may strike, as it often has. Thus it serves as a haven for
the arts. Its annual calendar of events includes many exhibits of
fine art from some of the best creators in the country. The grounds
also host several benefit events, such as concerts and auctions, the
proceeds of which go to alleviate the privations in the surrounding
neighborhood or to victims of natural calamities. More than that,
the Club itself is a work of art in its own right, having been largely
designed by landscape architect and National Artist I.P. Santos,
whose work was recently acknowledged by several members.
Regardless of the event, Mr. Tiu and his family can be seen on
such occasions, supporting the arts that the Club helps inspire and
cultivate.

KEEP THE FAITH
All year round, religious celebrations and holidays take place
at the Madre de Dios chapel or the Sacristry, as a reminder of
what members hold most dear in their lives. Here, families find
wisdom, enrichment, and comfort in observing time-honored
rituals and rites of passage. One may observe the passage of
time through the weekly Masses, the annual calendar of saintly
holidays, and the occasional healing mass, confirmation, and first
communion. Faith is something Mr. Tiu values, and something
he observes as often as possible with his fellow Club members, to
receive of the principles that guide everyday responsibilities.

INVEST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Endowed with some of the best weather and scenery in
the area, the Club has done its best, over the years, to preserve
the surrounding flora and fauna. These days, members may
engages in tree-planting activities and go bird-watching to
see the many species that abound in the area. After all, the
country is home to 657 types, some of which call Tagaytay
home. More to the point, the landscaping of the grounds is
designed to work with natural features, thus encouraging a
more organic integration between the constructed and the
natural.
Situated as it is in the middle of Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna,
the Club is positioned to provide employment to the people
who live in the surrounding neighborhoods. The opportunities
available to them here are manifold. It begins with basic
employment, which in itself is a training ground and a launchpad
for careers to take off from. The Club also opens its liturgical
celebrations to the neighborhood, sponsors the screening of
educational films, and has on a few occasions, drilled a few
deep-well pumps to provide the locals with potable water.
Mr. Tiu adds, “Of course, if there are other little things
where the Club could be of help, we will be more than glad to
help them. But I think the most essential thing is to provide
proper employment for them, for all the families who live here.
Our happiness at the Club is to make sure all our employees are
treated well, and eventually, they will all move forward and have a
great career, which all started [at] Tagaytay Highlands.”

Members may chance upon the Club President at the
Highlands Golfers Lounge some mornings, having a breakfast
of congee. Other times, one can find the family at the China
Palace, usually feasting on a variety of dim sum, the salted
fish and eggplant a constant dish at their table. Most of
all, Mr. Tiu prefers the Steakhouse’s Prime Rib, his choices
gravitating toward the simple and comforting. With the
varied cuisines available at the Club, one may be reminded
of the Epicurean belief that the pleasure is only due in part
to the food, with the rest supplied by the company of one’s
nearest and dearest.

During the cooler months of the year, the mornings find
the slopes blanketed in fog, giving the impression that the
entire community is floating in the clouds. The sunlight is
diffused in the mist, rarefying the air that wafts here and
there, making the residents feel as if their dreams followed
them into the waking world. Here, anything could be
possible: nurturing a family, nourishing the body, enriching
the mind, expanding the heart. This is the Club as seen beside
its President. Kensho waits just over the next rise.

After 30 years of teaching art at the Ateneo de Manila
University, Ben-Hur Villanueva retired to Baguio City to set up
his workshop, Arko ni Apo, where he leads various arts-related
activities for students, educators, young artists, and people from
several walks of life. He also established the Baguio Arts Guild.
For 2014, Mr. Villanueva and his sons Jik and Bumbo are
the Artists-in-Residence at Tagaytay Highlands. Their residency
kicked off with Yearnings, a collection of bronze and wood
sculptures, expresses the remembrance of and longing for the
unity once felt in Paradise before the Fall. Every human pursuit
becomes an attempt to recapture this state of bliss, but Paradise
remains a distant goal, existing only in hope. It is a yearning to
become whole again.
The Villanuevas’ handiwork speaks of love and passion,
of unions of interests, faith and devotion, and of vocation.
All these are brought about by man’s yearnings in life and the
courage and expectations to nevertheless live.
The exhibit translated into a charity event called Yearning
to Help, which raised and donated, on behalf of the club,
PhP 130,000 to the Philippine Red Cross for the survivors of
Typhoon Yolanda.

casualness—a contrast to the rigidity and structure common to
a lot of Western designs.
Tribute speeches were delivered by Henry N. Ocier, a Belle
Corporation officer, and Carlos Delfino, club member, architect,
and former colleague of the honoree. Mr. Delfino, who worked
with Mr. Santos in the 90s, recalled their first meeting in the
mid-60s, when he was still a student. The architect had given
Mr. Delfino’s parents some advice on how to improve their
garden.
He remembered a thought that struck him after that first
meeting: “[W]hat made the biggest impression on me was the
realization that IP Santos was a person who had just come back
from US where he earned his Landscape Architecture degree
from USC with practical experience working in a landscape
design office there. In other words, he had just come back to
Manila to establish the first landscape architecture practice in
the country.”
As for Mr. Santos, he has, in his age, found some structure
behind all the work he has done through the years. In his
commemorative coffee table book, he says, “At this point in life,
when I look back at the work I have done, I am gratified to see

modern-day heroes, Ildefonso P. Santos Jr., National Artist
for Architecture, in a small, exclusive dinner on August 2,

that the jumbled pieces of the jigsaw puzzle of my youth did
somehow hold some meaning. For all throughout my youth
until my maturity, I have always been attracted to beauty, have
observed the order that can result from chaos, and have learned
to appreciate and work with nature. In my work I have tried
to capture beauty, to emulate nature, and to design spaces that
would make man harmonize with the environment. I would like
to believe that I have tried to make a difference in my profession
for the betterment of people’s lives.”
Also in attendance were the National Artist’s entourage
composed of homeowners and members like Kevin Ty, James
Hussey Jr., Josh and Grace Ongsiaco, and Vince and Connie
Jayme Jr. Highlands executive chef Rene V. Acol prepared an
exceptional dégustation for dinner for the guests’ delectation.
Mr. Santos has contributed to the Highlands through his
landscapes around the Country Club, Pine Crest Village, and
the Villas, and this tribute comes in time for the property’s 20th
anniversary.
Months later, on January 29, 2014, I.P. Santos passed away
and was buried with honors at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

On November 29, 2013, Tagaytay Highlands, in partnership with the
Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Red Cross, organized
a fund raising event for our fellow countrymen in the Visayas region who
have been greatly affected by the Typhoon Yolanda. Concert for a Cause:
Tulong Para Sa Visayas gathered resources and tapped networks to help
those in need.
In attendance were Tagaytay Highlands officers and employees,
headed by the General Manager, Clara T. Kramer, who opened the
ceremonies and welcomed the attendees. The employees’ representative,
Union President Alex Manguinao, gave thanks to the attendees and
all the staff for sharing their blessings to the Filipino people. The Club’s
beneficiaries—the SM Foundation Inc., led by Executive Director Carmen
Linda M. Atayde, and the Philippine Red Cross represented by Governor
Rosalinda Wee—received the donations on behalf of their respective
institutions.
As the events’ highlight, the serenade of the Manila Philharmonic
Orchestra filled the Highlands Golfers Lounge with songs and smiles.
Lunch was served while members and guests listened to the orchestra
playing, and the music continued until the afternoon. World-renowned
balladeer Bo Cerrudo and Jillian Itaas joined the orchestra to serenade
the audience and dedicated some songs to the typhoon victims.
Through this concert, the Club extended its support to those
affected and contributed to making them feel the spirit of Christmas, in
the hopes of fortifying them for all the challenges of life.

Angelic voices filled Highlands Golfers Lounge during the visit of Les
Petits Chanteurs de Monaco on July 14, 2013. The choir went to Tagaytay
Highlands as part of their recreational activity during their Asian tour,
which included the Philippines. The Club has been privileged to be hear a
sample rendition from the group.
The concert was facilitated in part with the cooperation of the
Honorable Fortune A. Ledesma, Consul General of the Philippines to
Monaco.

A COLLECTOR’S EDITION
Tagaytay Highlands’ natural beauty was captured in Tagaytay City’s
monumental collector’s edition book, The Best of Tagaytay: A Tapestry
of Color. Published by the Sorrell Publishing Company New York, an
international company, the book showcased the best of the best in
Tagaytay City. The book features photographs of the Club’s signature
features, such as the cable car and funicular train, golf vistas, woodlands
panorama, and the dramatic sunset at the Highlands Peak 2,000 feet
above sea level. The local coffee table book is a special project of
outgoing mayor-turned-congressman Abraham Tolentino in support of
the city’s tourism program.

Pancho M. Piano
Tagaytay Highlands
Artist-in-Residence 2012-2013
Pancho Piano was born on September 22, 1954, to a working-class
family in Lagonoy, Camarines Sur. His education and livelihood were
tied to his skills as a young artist. Commercial work and occasional
commissions sustained his education and that of his younger siblings.
He finished a degree in Economics at the University of Nueva Caceres
in 1978. His talent in illustration was evident in his first two solo
exhibitions in Naga in 1977 and in 1981. In 1984, these caught the eye
of the late Jose Joya, who recommended Pancho as his scholar at the
College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Pancho’s talent bloomed in Manila. First, he topped the list of
artists from UP to train in German leather art in 1985. This led to a
host of international art programs. Despite this, Pancho never cut his
ties to Bicolandia.
Since 1986, Pancho has completed 150 murals and stained-glass
design commissions. Pancho has also received awards from such bodies
as the Development Institute for Bicolano Artists, the Golden Jubilee
Award from the University of Nueva Caceres, the Recognition Award
from Carson City, the Mayoralty Award from Naga City, the CSNHS
Centennial Award, and the Camarines Sur Provincial Government
Award. Pancho’s art can also be seen in books; his work graces the
cover of Folk Influence of Modern Philippine Art (2002) and is included
in The World of Best Art (2007).
The Tagaytay Highlands Series is a mixed mode of figurative and
abstract art inspired by the beauty of nature. The artist captures the
brilliance of the sunrises and the subtleties of the sunsets at the Club.
His imagination depicts iconic areas, like the Madre de Dios, the
Highlands Peak, and the Highlands China Palace in fluid, bold strokes
and playful textures rendered in delicate, transparent colors over colors.

I am a Tagaytay Highlands Baby. What I mean to say is, Tagaytay
Highlands felt like a second home to me for what seemed like fifteen years
(till my membership expired for being too old to be my dad’s extension—

me. What’s my point? My point is, I know this place by heart and I’ve seen
this place photographed many, many times. To make this place look new
to me would be close to impossible. So when I saw Rachelle and Lee’s
Metrofied Tagaytay Highlands wedding, I was completely dumbfounded
and downright impressed (as always) by how Metrophoto made such a
seemingly popular venue feel exciting and new again. Of course, Oly is one
half of it. Congratulations to Rachelle and Lee for making their wedding so
uniquely remarkable despite the weather.

and development company established in 1996, Asmara currently

The company’s founder and managing director, Charles Sutter, is a
French medical doctor, a permanent resident of the Philippines since

Charles is an international spa consultant with operations in Latin
America and India, and has been the co-consultant of the spa book

Certification Program. He is an operator of aquatic facilities and is
certified by the US National Swimming Pool Foundation. In 2012,

Charles is also the managing director of Spa and Wellness
Professionals, the first locally and internationally accredited spa school
in the Philippines, holding accreditations from the Confederation of
International Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (CIBTAC) of the UK
and the Technical Education and Skills Authority (TESDA) of the
Philippines. Spa and Wellness Professionals counts among its clients
five star spas such as The Chi Spa at the Shangri-La Mactan and the
EDSA Shangri-La Hotel; the Eskaya Resort and Spa in Amanpulo; the
Marco Polo Plaza Cebu in Plantation Bay, Mactan and the Mandarin
Oriental Spa.
Asmara is also a founding member of the Spa Association of the
Philippines.

tarictic hornbill, also known as the kalaw. The Animal Farm and the
Gardens are near the ridge of a forested gully that harbors Penelopides
manillae. Aside from their distinctively shaped beaks, the hornbills are
known for making their trademark raucous calls at specific times of
day; some of their daily performances can be heard between 6:00 a.m.
to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Of the 57 global species of hornbills, ten can be found in the
Philippines, attesting to the biodiversity of the country, and of the
environment Tagaytay Highlands shares with them.

the Pyramid
The rulers of Ancient Egypt came to life at last as little
pharaohs—alive and as mummies—and cute Cleopatras marched
to the Sports Center Hall to join the party at the Pharaoh’s
Pyramid. Upon entering the realm of King Tut, kids received loot
bags from mummies shambling all around the pyramid’s interiors.
The Pharaoh’s Pyramid Challenge caught the attention of the
little monarchs, who were given challenges written on papyrus
scrolls. Some turned their mommies into mummies; others
collected gems and precious stones. At the end of the challenges,
Club President Jerry Tiu and General Manager Clara Kramer gave
out the prizes: J. Co Donuts gift certificates, Gelato Eduardo gift
bags, and for the major prize, an iPad Mini.
One final game of hide-and-seek gave the children one last
chance to enjoy the sponsors’ treats: URC, Gelato Eduardo,
Selecta, Villa del Conte, Toy Kingdom, Tiny Buds, Nestle, Oishi,
and J.Co Donuts.

Match
Redemption! It was a victorious day for all Filipinos as the
Pambansang Kamao, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao won the WBO
International Welterweight Title fight against Mexican-American
boxer Brandon “Bambam” Rios last November 24, 2013.
Tagaytay Highlands members and guests were all ecstatic as they
witnessed the fight during a free live telecast at the Highlands Golfers
Lounge. Members and their guests arrived early at the venue to have a
good seat for the much-awaited fight. As time progressed, the golfers
lounge was fully seated.
A number of undercard fights were already running as the
audience awaited the main event. The anticipation was palpable in
the chilly air. Everybody’s attention was caught when the famous
ring announcer, Michael Buffer, announced the fight was about to
begin. The main event started with the singing of national anthems
of the U.S.A. and the Philippines by American Idol runner-up Jessica
Sanchez. Upon the introduction of the fighters, everyone in the venue
showed their support for the people’s champ.
The first round showed Pacquiao eager to fight and win the match.
He landed blows that made the crowd go wild, and in the middle of the
round, Rios slipped, but it was not clearly a knockdown. The sound of
the bell ended the first round, and everyone clapped. It went on with
Pacquiao showing zeal as well as Rios, who received a cut above the left
eye during the fourth round. Though there were times that Pacquiao
was pushed to the ropes, he quickly evaded his rival’s incoming
punches. Finally, in an act of pure sportsmanship, Pacquiao hugged his
opponent as the bell sounded the bout’s end.
Members, guests, and even Tagaytay Highlands employees and
trainees were very much entertained by the fight and a round of
applause rang through the Highlands Golfers Lounge as Pacman was
announced winner by unanimous decision.
The Peoples’ Champ not only redeemed himself after his two losses
but also, after the disaster brought by Typhoon Yolanda to the people
of Visayas, he uplifted the Filipino spirit.

DEVOTION
THE NATIONAL DAY OF CONSECRATION
Initiated by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP), on June 8, 2013, the National Day of Consecration is a
simultaneous celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the consecration
of all dioceses, parishes, and chapels to the Immaculate Heart of
Mary. Marian pilgrims composed of club members and First Saturday
devotees began the solemn activity with a simultaneous recitation of
the Holy Rosary and procession from Highlands Golf Clubhouse to the
Holy Family Chapel. Presiding was the Reverend Father Choy Ramos
from the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (SSS).
THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH MASS
The Let the Children Come to Me! Holy Family Chapel celebrated
a special liturgy for the young members of its community. Kids and
youth actively participated as lectors, servers, ushers, and volunteers
on August 27, 2013. The Reverend Father Randel Marero blessed all
kids present during the Holy Mass. The community chapel encourages
participation among the youth and kids through various chapel
activities and programs.

MAMA MARY’S BIRTHDAY
The annual festivity the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birth on October
8 is marked by the presence of the pilgrim image of St. Anne, Mother

On October 27, 2013, Sister Concepion V. Canasa, OP, a healing
nun from the Daughters of St. Dominic in Tagaytay City, facilitated
the healing session after the regular Sunday Mass. Hundreds of ardent
devotees with physical and spiritual needs and challenges participated
in the prayer and renewal activities. Another series of healing sessions
will take place in the upcoming Sundays of Lent in 2014.
National Day of Consecration
ALL SAINTS DAY EXHIBIT
The Holy Family Chapel community celebrated All Saints Day
with a religious exhibit of the patrons and patroness of the respective
parishes in the Diocese of Imus. The Reverend Father Randel Marero
of Tahanan ng Mabuting Pastol Seminary presided over the mass.
The event highlighted religious articles such as replicas of Our Lady
of Manaoag and the Sto. Niño de Praga, intricately crafted by Mr.
Cornelio “Dondon” Awa, a renowned sculptor and a club member.
The display ran from October 25 to November 9, 2013, at the Summer
Garden, Highlands China Palace.

Lifeline Ambulance is now the club’s official provider of immediate
medical assistance. It is a fully equipped state-of-the-art unit with a
height of 8 feet and several features. These include a dedicated standby
onsite crew of two licensed nurses and an EMT driver, Emergency
Medical Situation (EMS) basic medicines, equipment, and supplies, like
a cardiac monitor and defibrillator, vital signs monitor, oxygen, suction
machine apparatus, immobilization, and patient transport devices.
The ambulance will provide services to all club members, residents,
guests, employees, staff, and management, including use of any of its
on-board supplies and equipment while inside ambulance en route to
the hospital.
