What’s the best way to feather the perfect nest for your littlest angel? We asked interior designer Zoya Bograd, ASID, to share her thoughts, since she has designed many of them. Color: What with reports that babies see colors differently than we do-some stimu- late the brain, others don’t, etc.-her view is create a room that you, the parent, like and look good in, too, and avoid selecting strong primary colors. Window Dressings: As for window treatments, she suggests looking for styles that allow you to manage the amount of light you want in the room at different times of the day and night. For example, she often uses from Hunter Douglas Vignette Modern Ro- man Shades with the top-down bottom-up design option when decorating a nursery. Vignette shades also have no exposed rear cords for enhanced child safety. Furniture: Bo- grad believes the key to a practical and good-looking nursery is the placement of the furniture. She believes the crib, for example, should never be close to a window because of dust and drafts. Furthermore, the windows themselves pose a potential danger once an infant is able to stand in the crib. And, with safety in mind, it’s smart for Summer Fun at Quiet Valley Farm 570-992-6161 • www.quietvalley.org Enjoy old-time crafts, games, farm animals, hiking & nature Preschool Program: Session 1 Begins Apr. 6 Session 2 Begins May 4 Nature Explorers: K-2nd Gr. Bear Swamp is one of the most unique and biologically important natural areas in Northampton County and the largest wetland of its kind in the Lehigh Valley. It provides nesting habitat for locally uncommon migratory birds, like Acadian flycatcher, yellow-throated vireo, swamp sparrow, northern waterthrush and red-shouldered hawk. And it’s one of the few places in the county to see and hear barred owls throughout the year. This program is free of charge; however, registration is required. Established 1983 Fundraising Event To Benefit Kettle Creek Plan to attend the 25th Annual Kettle Creek Environmental Fund Dinner/Auction at Camelback on Friday, May 20, 2016 starting at 6pm. The Kettle Creek Environmental Fund (KCEF), an organization of individuals interested in supporting the KCEEC, are pleased to invite members of the community to their annual fundraising event. Since their inception in 1991, they have been able to raise over $750,000 in support of the KCEEC, including $100,000 toward the Center’s mortgage. Over the years, funds raised have been used toward construction of a new sugar shack (2003) for public ma- ple sugaring at our Meesing Outdoor Site, the purchase of a 46-acre parcel of land (2004) to adjoin the 120 acre Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, and building the Mattioli Outdoor Learning Pavilion (2008). In addition, many program materials have been purchased to enhance their environmental education programs for County residents of all ages. Proceeds have also gone toward the purchase of a 15-passenger handicapped accessible bus for educational programs and funding to continue to send all Monroe County 4th grade students to the Tannersville Bog. The smaller your yard, the smaller the mower deck can be. For example, a 21- or 22-inch walk-behind mow_er is commonly used on smaller yards. If your yard is larger than three-quarters of an acre, consider a rear-engine riding mower or a smaller lawn tractor. Riding mowers with rear-mounted engines provide good visibility and excellent mobility. Look for mowing decks between 28 and 42 inches wide and engines from 12 to 20 hp. A zero-turn rider or front- engine lawn tractor may be appropriate for one- to three-acre yards. Look for 16 to 24 hp and a mowing deck 38 to 44 inches wide. For yards larger than three acres, a larger zero-turn rider or garden tractor is probably best. Look for engines with at least 24 hp and mowing decks in the 48- to 61-inch range. • The Terrain: A typical walk-behind mower is fine for a small, flat yard. If your land is sloped or hilly, consider a self-propelled walk-behind mower. One with big back wheels is easier to maneuver across rough terrain. All riding mowers can handle varied terrain, though some are better on slopes than others. Be careful on slopes and hills. If you’re us- ing a riding mower, mow up and down the incline, never across. With a walk-behind Briggs & Stratton engines can be found in several brands of lawn mowers ranging from small walk-behinds to large zero-turn mowers and garden tractors. • Lawn Mower Features: New lawn and garden tractors from Simplicity have Free Floating mower decks with full-width rollers, traction options, push-button start and two- or four-wheel suspension. Many zero-turn mowers offer Continued on Page 12 mower, always mow across the incline and never pull the mower back toward your feet. • Your Physical Condition: If pushing a lawn mower is difficult, you may want a self-propelled mower even with a very small yard. Similarly, a riding mower may be the right choice if you’re unable to easily walk behind a mower. • The Engine: Look for a quality engine suited for the size of the job you expect it to do. Try citronella plants and marigolds to naturally repel mosquito populations and be sure to eliminate standing water as it attracts mosquitoes. 2. Check your equipment: Make sure the lawn mower, weed-whacker and the like are primed and ready, blades sharpened, tank refilled and so on. 3. Rake it in. Get rid of last year’s dead leaves and twigs that can keep your lawn from soaking up the sun. Consider composting the debris. 4. Beating the pests: Fortunately, protecting your yard against insect-borne diseases such as chikungunya, West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) does not have to be a challenge, nor does it have to involve chemical sprays. Instead, you can use environmentally friendly solutions to keep bugs at bay while enjoying the outdoors. For example, Dynatrap insect traps can provide relief from mosquitoes, biting flies and other flying bugs without pesti Continued on Page 17 from making themselves at home. However, according to the International Window Film Association (IWFA), the harmful UV rays that people are concerned about while outdoors can also penetrate into homes, with the possibility of causing damage. Typical windows block as little as 25 percent of UV rays which, if left unchecked, can cause extensive damage to the skin, including premature aging, wrinkles and even skin cancer. Additionally, the UV rays may accelerate the fading of furniture, flooring and other décor. Fortunately, professionally installed window film may act as a powerful defense against these problems, by blocking up to 99 percent of the UV rays. This is possible because spray polyurethane foam insulation offers versatility that most other insulation products do not. Depending on the project and type of spray foam, it can serve as an air barrier, a moisture barrier and can even offer structural support. And this versatility has made certain high-density, closedcell spray foam insulations an increasingly popular choice as a roofing material in many renovation and new construction projects. Traditional roofing systems often depend on several layers of materials, such as waterproofing membranes, decking and insulation, to protect their buildings. A spray foam roof, however, can limit the layers of materials and decrease the weight on the building. Combined with a coating material, spray foam roofing can remove the need for a separate FOCUS COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER • Friday, April 22, 2016 Page 19 waterproofing membrane, as it’s seamless and self-flashing, which helps keep water from seeping through weak spots, such as fasteners and seams.
