But when Germany was unified again in 1989, the city chose to rebuild the glorious baroque scene again. So parts of the Altstadt are still a construction site today. That means that the SCHLOSS (Royal Castle) was the center of power in the Middle Ages and during the days of the Saxon electors, but it will only be complete in 2013. Some modern elements are already integrated, like the transHIGHLIGHT parent rhombi-roof in the inner court. Today it‘s home of famous exhibitions like the Turkish chamber, the copper THE PRINCE‘S TREASURIES (Historical Green Vault: Open from 10:00 to 19:00, closed engraving cabinet and the Green Vaults ( ). on Tue, o12 / no rebates; New Green Vault: Open from WORLD‘S BIGGEST PORCELAIN PICTURE 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Tue, o6 / o3,50 with student card) Are you into royal glamour? Still later, an already long-planned glockenspiel with 40 bells made of Meissen porcelain was installed on the east side. Hitting bells of porcelain sounds like a bad idea, but the thing works and it plays different melodies depending on the season. Today the Zwinger shelters museums like the old masters gallery ( ) and the porcelain collection. Lotte, the sad-looking dog: “In the backyards of Dresden-Neustadt you might come across a real good cat-fight.” Adrian (22, bartender): „With good drinks, great bands and a lot of friendliness, the Neustadt offers the best opportunities for a long and happy night. Now follow the river along the bike path. You will smell the beer and grilled food after 10 minutes from the JOHANNSTÄDTER BEER GARDEN. Take a beer. On hot days you should think about taking the ferry to the shadowy Neustadt quarter (o1,50). On the other side of the river you‘ll see the three beautiful Elbe Castles and their vineyards. Now you reach Germany‘s greenest residential area next to the bridge. Here you can take a rest in the SCHILLERGARTEN restaurant where the famous writer Schiller drank beer in 1785. Now you will see the BLAUES WUNDER Bridge. This ‚Blue Wonder‘ is the oldest frame bridge in Europe. Germans call somebody, who is drunk ‚blau‘ so the bridge might get a totally different meaning for you. You can explore the quarter on the other riverside and get back the same way. Make sure the police don‘t stop you because there are only 0,8 per mill allowed in Germany. Dresden appears to be extremely international! But you should make sure that you have the necessary petty cash on you! If you just want to take a walk and have a look, visit the goose-snatcher fountain from the 19th century. The goose-snatcher playing the bagpipe depicts a student who supplements his income in his own way. Fittingly, the restaurant ‚Gänsedieb‘ offers Saxon and international cuisine (daily from 11:00 to midnight). STUDENTS CLUB (Daily from 19:00) Well, this looks like a rather big entrance for a student club. That‘s because the entry under the Brühlsche Terrasse is actually an old cannon gate through which the heavy machinery was rolled to protect the fort in the old days. The most popular clubs are the Tante Ju (liveclub), Spinnerei (gay partys and more), Kingbeatz (drum ‚n‘ bass), Bunker (gothic) and BK8 (techno). But there are even more hidden spots like the more alternative Sektor Evolution in the X-Park where many local bands also have a practice room. This whole area belonged to a military complex around 1870, which produced mostly handguns and munitions. After World War I, Germany had to quit this and so the area became an industry zone, only to start up their weapons production again in World War II. Strangely enough it wasn‘t destroyed with on February 13th 1945. During communist times, this area produced train and airplane motors until the companies went bankrupt with the reunification of Germany. Today the listed buildings belong to a cultural center. THE ALTERNATIVE TO THE ALTERNATIVE If you‘ve had enough of the loud and busy Neustadt, you should move on to the small HECHT QUARTER just like the locals do, especially to Rudolf-Leonhard Street. Here, we are a bit less nervous and a bit more laid-back. Located close to the St. Pauli church ruin, SANKT PAULI (daily from 10:00 to open ended) offers affordable and extravagant dishes. Further down the street, LEONARDO (daily from 18:00, weekends from 10:00 to 2:30) has been this area‘s long-established speciality for 14 years now and offers German and international dishes and a rich breakfast buffet on the weekends (Sat o7,70, Sun o8,20).
