‘The Misalliance’
The gab is the gift of “Misalliance” at the Shaw Festival,
even before the plane brings
down the house.
Festival inspiration George
Bernard dismissed his own
play as lightweight in 1909,
but that wasn’t flying with
Thursday ’s matinee throng,
which bestowed bravos on its
ironic closing line, “there’s
nothing more to say.”
It addresses improbable
couplings – young and old,
commoners and nobles, weak
and strong. At the center is
the vivacious Hypatia, whose
father has pulled down a fortune in underwear, and the
sniveling “Bunny” Summerhays, who’d be scared of his
own shadow, if he had one,
having been blessed with “no
more body than absolutely
necessary.”
Some critics diss “Mis” as
talky, but modern society
would be a lot better off if
disagreements hewed to the
rhetorical style of the first
act, points made vigorously,
rebutted with animation but
no interruption, an epigram
a minute: “Never marry a
man you love, he’ll make you
a slave for life”… “The priest
was afraid of believing in
anything, lest it get him in
trouble”... “Democracy reads
well but it doesn’t play well,
like some plays.”
Then comes the plane
crash, shaking the set to its
foundations (after a sculpture is bludgeoned, a mercy
killing, for sure), and in steps
the Polish aviatrix Lina, Doris Day on steroids in an ivory jumpsuit. No blushing humility cloaks this daredevil,
broad and audacious, actress
Tara Rosling bearing her to
new heights without benefit
of ailerons.
Director Eda Holmes sets
“Misalliance” in 1962, halfway between debut and today, which casts a cloud over
many of its moments, particularly the plane crash. However, all nine actors have this
thing down cold, both in tone
and understanding, even
though Thom Marriott does
put a bit of a Donald Trump
spin on the sultan of skivvies.
Hat-tips, too, to Ben Sanders, wearing cowardice like
a badge of honor as Bunny,
Krista Colosimo as the rapacious, classically-clad Hypatia and Peter Krantz as the
affectionately aging aristocrat.
Not every word breaks the
sound barrier. Rosling’s Lina?
Well, that’s OK, her body
English speaks volumes. As
plain-spoken Mother Tarleton, Catherine McGregor
was a bit more problematical, too soft, too swift, too accented. Rocket Man missed a
lot of it.
Judith Bowden’s set design
is marvelous, an architectural symphony of rounded
edges. They didn’t have that
in 1909 and that alone provides some justification for
Director Holmes time-period
choice. Shaw-goers should
not miss “Misalliance,” in
the Royal George Theatre
through Oct. 28.

Family is at the core of every Italian’s existence. Family,
unity, respect and loyalty are among the most esteemed
values of all. Italians are passionate people who live and
love on a grand scale.
FRANKIE SCINTA STAGE SCHEDULE
We are proud to dedicate this year’s 25th Anniversary Sorrento Cheese Italian Heritage festival to “LA FAMIGLIA”.
Under the Ilio DiPaolo Italian Heritage Tent enjoy the
many family pictorial displays donated by many of Buffalo’s Italian Families, as they share their immigrant stories.
Learn about your own family’s Italian roots by visiting with
our expert genealogy staff that will be very eager to help
you research your family tree. See an authentic Sicilian
Puppet Show, a centuries old tradition still carried on in
Sicily, and on the weekends, under the Heritage Tent.
Face painting and crafts for kids are still popular at the
Tent with the youngsters. We will also enjoy the sounds
of Italian accordionist Dan Petti and the piano stylings of
Joe Carnevale. Also pin your money on the St. Anthony’s
statue for your special intentions, all proceeds to St.
Anthony’s of Padua Church.
A special feature this year is our “Grape Stomp” which
honors the centuries old tradition of wine making. Participate in the challenge to see who could stomp the most
juice out of the grapes.
The contest will take place three times a day, every day!
Be sure to sign up for the trip for two to Italy here under
the tent, See one of our staff to enter!
There is something for everyone at the festival, young and
old. Whether you are stomping grapes, playing Bocce, researching your roots, dancing la Tarantella or just enjoying
the sights, sounds and food, we invite you to live la dolce
vita and remember everyone’s Italian on these four days.

PRAYER TO THE
BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of
Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son
of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist
me in my necessity. There are none
that can withstand your power. Oh,
show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to
thee (3X). Holy Mother, I place this
cause in your hands (3X). Holy
Spirit, you who solve all problems,
light all roads so that I can attain
my goal. Thank you for your mercy
towards me and mine.
The person must say this prayer 3
consecutive days. After 3 days, the
request will be granted. This prayer
must then be published after the
favor is granted.
