One is on the Circle coming into the City that proclaims Everglades City is the STONE CRAB CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. The Mayor also wanted everyone to know that he was born on Chokoloskee Island and is “proud of it.” He is shown here next to the new sign on North Storter Avenue that warns … CHOKOLOSKEE CHICKEN CROSSING. Comments from our Readers by Patty Huff Several readers who sent us comments about articles in the Rapper said they would like to read more about locals (both past and present). This issues covers: Local History (page 8) about Curtis Hancock and his renovation of ACE, the fishing guide boat originally built by his grandfather A. C. Hancock. Memories of Mama Hokie (page 9), written by former resident and artist Camille Baumgartner. Camille moved to north Georgia in 1994 and is now in Hospice care. She donated her framed photograph of Mama Hokie to the Museum of the Everglades. We will always remember Mama Hokie and her sign out on the Tamiami Trail which read “BEER and WROMS” (this is how it was written). Glades Folks (page 10) is a new column which features Ted Juracsik titled “Made in the U.S.A.” More locals will be highlighted in future issues. Obituary (page 11) of our dear friend Olga Hirshhorn who recently passed away at her home. Several years ago I was invited by Olga to visit her home in Naples where she gave me a tour through centuries of art displayed throughout her modest home. Many items she donated to the Baker Museum in Naples. She was an extraordinary woman. Please continue to send us your comments and we will continue to incorporate your ideas and suggestions. Several people have suggested that we include crossword puzzles; my mother worked them every day of her life. However, I was never as skilled as my mother, but if someone would like to help create an “Everglades” crossword puzzle (perhaps once a month), please let us know. Always like to keep articles / information related to our unique area in the Everglades! If you have news, photos, announcements, or articles ... email mulletrapper@gmail.com or phone 695-2397. The start of school has been crazy busy with sports and school back to back. I have cross country and volleyball every day right after each other. Speaking of volleyball, we finished the season this week and would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us. At one of our cross country meets in Marco Island I finished 56th out of 100 runners. My friend Alycia came in at 31 st place, which was the best time on our team. Last month was the Gus Macker basketball tournament. EVG played on Saturday to see who went to the championship. Sadly we all lost. EVG played hard and tried their best. Huge thanks to the students who played and everybody who came to support EVG! The middle school students have elected a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. I am happy to inform you that after a close race I was voted middle school president. Our middle school vice president is Sadrilynn Tiger, secretary Morgan Herrin, and finally treasurer is Lexie Hendrickson. Congratulations to all of you! We’ll be meeting to discuss our plans for the year and I’ll keep you updated. Again I am very sorry I haven’t written for the paper over the summer, but I will be writing my article from now on! Have a wonderful day and see you around the corner. Taylor Dahlke is in the 6th grade at Everglades City School. Students attended the Dinosaur George Exhibit in Naples on September 19 where they met Governor Rick Scott. The trip was funded by the monies collected from last year’s Aquafest event. Lots of fun for area kids on October 12 with CCSO hosting SAFE Communities night. A beautiful night full of games, a jump house and hot dogs kept everyone enjoying the evening. email: mulletrapper@gmail.com www.evg.collierschools.com It has been a wonderful month and our students are truly excelling in their Reading Achievement. Our Literacy Team works diligently to foster student love of Reading, and these efforts are paying off in a tremendous fashion as our students passed a major milestone early in the school year. As of October 12, our students have read over six millions words! Our Media Specialist, Melissa Owen, does exceptional work in conjunction with our teachers to motivate students and recognize their efforts. Our “Celebration of Literacy” will be on display from Nov. 2 thru the 5th as there are a number of student programs planned to coincide with our school Book Fair. On Wed. Nov. 4 we are hosting a School and Community Event “Books and Breakfast”. We will serve complimentary breakfast items for our school’s family and friends to enjoy as they join our students at the Book Fair from 7:00 to 8:15 am. Opportunities will be available to buy books and / or support our teacher and media center book collections that morning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the school at 377-9810 for more information. It’s Always Great to Be a Gator! I was not in school; I had not been since I was eleven. Times were hard, Pa only earned $2.50 per day. He had to pay $10 per month per pupil to buy books, pencils, slate, copy book and ink. I was the dark horse or the dunce in the family. Ma told me I would never amount to anything, but I thought I'll show you. Sure Myra, Marvin and Ester had to have an education. I read, studied, and thought to myself I'll show you. I did too. I went to spelling bees everywhere and was never spelled down. All my clothes were all made out of Ma's old ones till I got too big. She bought new cloth for herself, then Myra got first choice. I took what I could get, but I've cried many nights from the time I was eight years old. I got up every morning at four o'clock and cooked breakfast, packed the lunch buckets for Pa, Malcom, Abb to take to work. I was afraid of Malcom. He was mean. Abb was always good to me. I worked for Dr. Lindsey when I was fourteen. I helped Mrs. Lindsey mostly, took care of the two children. We lived in Mingo#1. There was Mingo #1 and #2. The mountains were five miles from bottom to top of the mines. The openings as they were called were halfway up. They took the mules down in the mines and never brought them up 'tll they were too banged up. All the pass time we had was climb the mountains and cut our names in the birch trees. to be continued... Top with fried bacon. YUM! Great on a cool fall night or watching football games on TV. Enjoy! If you have a favorite recipe to share, please phone or email us. Patty Huff FLORIDA FLORA Fakahatchee by Patty Huff Grass (Tripsacum dactyloides) Common names: Gamma Grass, Florida Gamma Grass, Eastern Gamma Grass A native of Florida this is one of the easiest to grow in our climate since it tolerates most conditions in our wet and dry seasons. If it gets enough water, the plant is evergreen and thrives in a damp, rich soil. However, you will notice as you drive along the rivers of the Everglades that it can turn brownish-yellow in the cold and drier season. Fakahatchee grass grows up to four to six feet tall compared to the Tripsacum floridanum which is called dwarf Fakahatchee grass (even though it is a different species) and it grows only up to two to three feet in height. Also, the bloom on this variety has tiny flowers that cluster on long stalks compared to the true Fakahatchee grass which has red-brown spikes at the top of nodding stems. The dactyloides leaves are dark green and arching whereas the floridanum leaves are glossy, long and narrower. If you enjoy the wild look of the Everglades with that “native” touch, either of these species will make you feel right at home. Off the Shelf - Book Review “Voices in the Ocean: A Journey into the Wild and Haunting World of Dolphins” by Susan Casey, reviewed by Patty Huff As I have mentioned in other book reviews, I get my ideas of books to read from listening to interviews with the authors on NPR. My favorite books are biographies, history, and those about our environment. A few months ago I heard Susan Casey talk about her experiences with dolphins. When visiting the Keys as a teenager, I would swim with the dolphins at Santini’s in Grassy Key (now the Dolphin Research Center); since then I have always been intrigued with dolphins. In her personal account, Susan Casey chronicles the early beginnings of the dolphins and states that their brains are much bigger than humans and have evolved over 35 million years, 34.5 years longer than we have. They have developed a strong sense of community and their place in the world. Susan became fascinated with dolphins not long after her father died of a sudden heart attack in 2010; while swimming off the coast of Maui, she encountered dolphins in the wild and experienced a profound solace and peace. Some fascinating facts that she observed are that they have extraordinary healing abilities and are resistant to infections; some researchers believe that dolphins produce tissue-rebuilding stem cells and antibiotics. Also, when dolphins are given a name, they are the only animals who call themselves by that name and whistle it to other dolphins; they keep this name throughout their lifetime. This book may be purchased through Amazon.com and also in book stores. PAGE 7 www.evergladesmulletrapper.com What’s Happening in the Everglades City Area The MULLET RAPPER OCTOBER 23, 2015 Living Gulf Coast LOCAL HISTORY “Dreams do come true” by Charles Sobczak by Patty Huff Spirit-of-the-Wild Wildlife Management Area When Curtis Hancock was just a boy, he grew up hanging around the fish house that belonged to his maternal grandparents Virgie and Wiley Dickerson. His other grandfather A.C. Hancock was a boat builder and a fishing guide. He built several of these for the local guides, including one for his brother-in-law Glenn Smallwood in 1951. Glenn bought the material for the boat and paid A.C. $1,500 for the work. “Uncle Glenn”, as Curtis remembers him, docked his boat at the Rod & Gun where his anglers usually stayed. Other fishing guides did the same, old-timers such as Dinks Boggess, Mervin Noble, Lewis Daniels, and Vernon Goff. They would take overnight trips out in the bays to fish for tarpon, snook, and redfish. The boats were built for this area, fishing in only 26” water. Curtis loved to watch his grandfather work in the Chokoloskee boat shed, dreaming that one day he would have one of his own. He would tag along as A.C. would fix things up; he enjoyed listening to the big wood planer A.C. used. Curtis said you could hear the sound all around Chokoloskee Island. Glenn’s boat was named the ACE after A.C. (they added the “E”) and he fished with it until he sold it to Mervin Noble in 1989 who docked it in front of his home on Storter Avenue. Mervin renamed the boat Albatross II and continued to take anglers out until 1996 when Captain Franklin Adams purchased it, then spent months fixing it up. I had the privilege of fishing with Franklin and some friends many years ago in this boat. It was a “girls” day out on the water fishing with Franklin who then cooked the trout we caught with a side of homemade hushpuppies and Key lime pie. Over the years the boat served its captains well as many anglers recall the great fishing they had, but it’s not all about the fishing; it’s experiencing the wonders of the Everglades, the friendships made, the memories, the storms, and just the great times. Finally, on August 30, 2014, after a year of serious deliberation Curtis bought the boat on his birthday, a gift to himself, not just for sentimental family value but also because it was his dream since he was a child. He bought it just before his father Chris passed away in October 2014; although his Dad was ill, he thought how nice it would be to take him out for a ride and maybe to fish. It has taken over a year to restore the old boat and Curtis said that most of the back-breaking work was done by “little” Robert Robinson. He was the one sanding it down and working so hard when strangers would stop by almost weekly and have another story to tell about fishing out of that boat. Curtis would also like to acknowledge Kit Johnson who arranged with Randy at the fish house to have the boat hauled out and moved to dry dockage for the restoration. Curtis spent 60 hours building the beautiful mahogany helm and cleaning the original steering wheel (he also had the original side lights re-chromed). He found working with the wood therapeutic and relaxing, so soon after his father died. He now enjoys taking his family (his wife, a daughter and two sons) out for a ride on the old fishing boat which he re-named the ACE. Dreams do come true. email: mulletrapper@gmail.com Location: Entrance is on the north side of County Road 832, approximately one mile east of State Road 29. GPS Coordinates: 26Ε59'61.97"N / 081Ε40'69.91"W / Phone: 850-488-4676; www.myfew.com/recreation/WMASites_SpiritoftheWild / E-mail: n/a / 7,487 acres / Admission fee charged. The name says it all at the 7,487-acre Spirit-of-the-Wild WMA. Originally a ranch, sod operation, and vegetable farm, the property was purchased by the state of Florida in 2002, which turned it over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to oversee as a wildlife management area (WMA). It is near the much larger Okaloacoochee (OK) Slough, and together the two properties form close to 40,000 acres of wilderness preserve in Hendry County. As is often the case with these purchases by the state, the former owner of the property leased it back for cattle grazing. That lease ran out in 2007, and FWC, in collaboration with the state, are filling in many of the drainage ditches and canals, removing the old pastures of Bahia grass (remnants of the former sod farm), and replanting the acreage with native trees, shrubs, and grasses. Owing to the immensity of the property, this will likely take decades to complete. Like all wildlife management areas, Spirit-of-the-Wild permits recreational hunting, as well as birding, bicycling, and horseback riding. Archery hunting of the local feral pigs is a popular activity. Gun season generally is open in late October and November. Small game, turkey, and dove seasons also occur at Spirit-of-the-Wild. The entrance to this wildlife management area is on the north side of County Road 832 about 1½ miles east of State Road 29 north of Immokalee. The main road is called Canoe Road, though the property has no navigable waterway. Just up the road is a game check-in station staffed by FWC. Canoe Road continues north until it becomes the Albritton Loop Road, then crosses Robert’s Canal and becomes Thomas Road, returning seven miles later to County Road 832. Five hiking trails head east off of Canoe Road. These old farm roads are also used by all-terrain vehicles and can be quite chewed up because of it. The terrain is mostly pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and seasonal wetlands typical of this part of interior Florida. Birding is fantastic here. The region has eastern meadowlarks, swallowtail kites, snail kites, loggerhead shrikes, wood ducks, and northern harriers. The FWC website has a complete list of birds found at Spirit-of-the-Wild. The preserve is home to many Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes and water moccasins, so care should be taken when leaving the main path and heading into the saw palmetto thickets or marshes. If you take a scenic drive or head out on a short hike along its four-plus miles of trails, you might also come across some of the wild hogs, deer, and wild turkeys that frequent the area. Although this wildlife management area is well on its way to becoming a first-class eco-destination, it is still a work in progress. If you are on your way to the nearby OK Slough, however, a short side trip to Spirit-of-the-Wild is well worth the time. Charles Sobczak is a Sanibel author. PAGE 8 www.evergladesmulletrapper.com The MULLET RAPPER TAXING THINGS by Mike the Tax Guy Who’s Whose Dependent? Many family situations can cause confusion as to who may claim a dependent on tax returns . The IRS has certain tests to establish dependency. Support: The tax payer must provide more than half the support of the claimed dependent. A parent or child does not have to live in the same household; a parent living in an assisted living facility could still meet the test. A disabled child in a residential treatment center can also meet the support test. Relationship: The person claimed as a dependent must be related to the tax payer in a specific way. Gross Income Test: The person claimed as a dependent must have gross income of less than the personal exemption amount. The standard exemption for 2015 is $4000. This does not apply if the dependent is a child of the tax payer under age 19 or a full-time student under age 24 at the end of the calendar year. Citizenship Test: The claimed dependent must be a US citizen, national or resident of the United States or a resident of Canada or Mexico at some time during the year. Joint Return Test: The person claimed must not generally file a joint income tax return with another unless the only reason to file the return was to obtain a full refund of tax withheld. There are even more complications relating to divorce, unmarried parents, same sex marriages, domestic partners, filing status, and many other special situations. You can wade through these in IRS Pub. 501. Mike, The Tax Guy, provides income tax services. His phone number is 695-0595. As a photographer, I find it amazing to be able to explore places like these and share the dramatic landscapes and wildlife with others.” Quinn is the youngest son of novelist Carl Hiaasen; at age 15 he is showing a promising career in the arts. This is his first exhibit highlighting a collection of photographs capturing the pure beauty of the Everglades. Come meet the photographer on Saturday, November 7, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Pauline Reeves Gallery. The event is hosted by the Friends of the Museum of the Everglades. Collier County Museums has announced the appointment of Martha Hutcheson as the Interim Manager of the Museum of the Everglades and that Jennifer Perry has transferred to the Marco Island Historical Museum effective October 1. The Friends’ Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 3:30 pm in City Hall. She was the dearest, kindest, compassionate person to all who knew her. We were instant friends. Over the years I learned about her past history. She was from Camilla, Georgia, a Cherokee Indian family. Mama Hokie married and moved to Miami area with her new husband and many dreams of their lives together. Her husband found the Everglades property and purchased it years earlier. Her husband died tragically from a heart attack (?) which changed her life. She didn’t share details of her past. When I knew her, she had kept all the trucks, trailers and “dreams” in her yard as they slowly rusted away. Her only adversary was a man she called “the Government Man.” Lots of mysteries surrounded her life, but she made it clear she didn’t like the Government Man! The day of her alligator attack encounter at the canal in her front yard was because she couldn’t flush the toilet and was getting a bucket of canal water to flush the toilet. The alligator bit off her right lower arm to the elbow. She went into instant shock. She had a phone but kept hitting 611 instead of 911! The Ochopee Firemen rescued her and she was airlifted to Naples Community Hospital. Immediate surgery and blood saved her life. Next day I went to the hospital to see her. I will never forget how small she looked (lost lots of blood). Nor will I forget what she told me: “That was a Mother Gator who needed to feed her babies. That’s why she took my arm.” Mama Hokie’s compassion was remarkable to me. She found the positive in the tragic event. Mama Hokie stayed in Naples for physical therapy for months. While she was gone, friends cleaned up her camp, took away all the rusting junk and her “dreams.” When she finally came home and saw the cleaned camp, she insisted that all her stuff be returned! All of her friends made certain she had help with everything so she could continue living in her shack and chickee, feeding stray animals, selling beer & worms to survive. One friend took over getting her a bath and hair wash each week. We all rallied around her care. I took homemade foods and took her to church at the Church on the circle whenever she wanted to go. E-City residents were wonderful in helping her. The Seminole Camp near her property gave her a “New Name Celebration.” They honored her with their celebration; her new name was “ONE TOUGH OLD LADY.” She was very proud of her new name! Camille Baumgartner is a talented artist and sculptor who lived for many years in Everglades City before moving to north Georgia, selling her home to Steve & Patty Huff. She has donated the above framed photograph of Mama Hokie to the Museum. Panther Death The remains of a 3-yr-old uncollared female Florida panther (UCFP251) were recovered on October 8 on US41 just west of the junction of San Marco Road (SR92) and CollierSeminole State Park. The cause of death was collision with a vehicle. The carcass was sent to the FWC Wildlife Research Lab in Gainesville lab for a complete necropsy. This is the 31st Florida panther mortality and 22nd road mortality for 2015. Please drive carefully and watch for wildlife in the Everglades area. SHERIFF’S REPORT Burglary to a residence was reported off of Panther Creek Lane in Everglades City sometime between October 1 and the 11th. Reportedly missing from the residence was a Sony 48 inch flat screen TV, a Dell personal computer and a Brother printer. Sometime between October 10-11 a “Sailfish” 18 ft center console boat with an 115hp Johnson 4-stroke outboard was removed from a residence located off of Smallwood Drive in Chokoloskee. This boat was taken along with a custom made “Boatmaster” performance trailer. Both were later recovered. If you have any information on the first theft or observe suspicious activity, please contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 252-9300 as soon as possible. In an emergency, dial 911 immediately. email: mulletrapper@gmail.com OCTOBER 23, 2015 GLADES FOLKS - “Made in the U.S.A.” by Patricia Huff On October 23, 1956, there was a revolution (led by students) against the government of the Hungarian’s People Republic which imposed Soviet policies after the USSR had invaded Central and Eastern Europe. The resistance continued until November 10 with over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops killed and 200,000 Hungarians fled as refugees. Tibor Juracsik was a teenager when he left his home country and moved to New York where he worked in a Tool and Die Company, practicing the trade he had learned in a bicycle factory in Budapest. Ted (Tibor) lived in a Catholic orphanage when he first arrived in the States, cleaning floors to pay for his housing. In his early twenties he met his future wife Wilma at a Hungarian church youth social. He continued to work hard and became a successful businessman as he expanded his own factory in New York. In time he relocated with his wife and children Ted Jr and Marianne to Boca Raton to build a new factory. Even as a young boy, Ted loved to fish in the Danube River. He started making reels 40 years ago when he was not happy with current design features and partnered with renowned fisherman Billy Pate. For 20 years Ted continued to improve and redesign his reels, and in 1995 he came out with the first reel under his own given name “Tibor.” Ted moved to Chokoloskee 20 years ago, about the same time we bought our house and met him soon after. Steve was very familiar with his Tibor reels and respected the craftsmanship. One of the first things that caught my attention when visiting Ted at his home in the mid-1990s was the sign above his shop “It’s My Turn.” I thought “good for him.” After years of working, he was going to take time off for himself. To know Ted is to accept his honesty and bluntness. He will tell you exactly what he is thinking when he is thinking of it, and you can never take it personally; it is who he is and you respect him for it. All the kids around Chokoloskee know Ted; he talks to them and if they are interested in fishing, he encourages them, many times giving them tackle to help them along. Not only is he generous with kids but also with his neighbors and friends. If anyone needs anything, he is there for them, always free with advice and guidance, especially to an earnest young angler. Ted continues to assist locals when and where his technical skills prove to be useful, repairing rudders and building new running gear. My husband has been the recipient of such knowledge on countless occasions. Ted even taught Steve metal working with a lathe and a milling machine. Another thing I admire about Ted is that he is constantly rethinking, re-inventing things in his head. He said he comes up with most of his creative designs while soaking in his bathtub. At 78 he doesn’t slow down; his brain is always at work. Besides fishing Ted enjoys going out to his hunting camp in central Florida. He has received many IGFA awards for the record fish that are caught using his signature reels. Whenever he accepts an award, he makes a point to say that all of his reels are “MADE in the USA!” This is something of which he is extremely proud, being an American citizen. He believes that this is the greatest country on earth and one that has given an immigrant (who brought with him only a fierce work ethic) the opportunity to become a world renowned machinist. This community is wonderfully blessed by his frankness and willingness to share his time, his loyalty and his knowledge. At age 95 Olga Hirshhorn passed away on October 3 at her home in Naples. She and her husband Joseph were frequent visitors to the Everglades area. They both loved the fishing and the charm of our city. After Hurricane Wilma devastated the trees and so many homes in 2005, Olga wanted to cheer things up a bit and asked renowned artist Kenneth Noland to design the colors for the rusted boat lift on the Barron River at the Rod & Gun Club. It is now an outdoor sculpture. ESHP hosted the dedication of the sculpture with champagne at the site after Olga cut the ribbon around the base of the boat lift where a plaque reads: “THIS HISTORIC BOAT LIFT WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A WORK OF ART BY KENNETH NOLAND THANKS TO THE VISION OF OLGA HIRSHHORN, BARBARA AND RICHARD KEARNEY, DONALD SEABURY, AND PAUL ARSENAULT. DEDICATED APRIL 13, 2007” With her husband Joseph, Olga traveled the world collecting art. Joseph was a businessman, financier and mining tycoon who donated his painting and sculpture collection to establish the Hirschhorn Museum on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Olga continued her philanthropy after her husband’s death in 1981. She was also generous with her donations and support as a member of the Friends of the Museum of the Everglades. Small in stature but not in heart! We will miss Olga and her enthusiasm for life, history and the Everglades!
