New splash pad
a great spot for
summer family fun
For families looking to
beat the heat, Kincardine’s
newly-opened splash pad
is the place to be.
The new aquatic playground is an extension of
Lions Park on the grounds
of the Davidson Centre,
Kincardine’s community
centre. The splash pad
was a dream that became
a reality this year, thanks
to a community-wide
fundraising effort led by
the Kincardine and District Lions Club. So far,
more than half a million
dollars has been invested in the project, with
contributions from the
municipality, local businesses, private citizens
and the Lions Club.
The splash pad is free
to use and is a great place
to take a break and cool
down after exploring some
of Kincardine’s unique
landmarks, points of interest, trails and shops.
It is located on Durham
Street, just a short drive
or walk from Kincardine’s
lakeside downtown.

Come home to Ripley this summer
Time flies when you’re having fun.
And nobody has more fun
than people in Ripley. So while
2005 may seem just like yesterday, Ripley Reunion celebrations are ready to go this
summer.
The reunion
committee has adopted the slogan “All
Roads Lead Home,”
and expects the population of Ripley to
grow from 600 to
more than 6,000.
“It is just going
to be a good time,” said Dwight
Irwin, a member of the planning
committee that started getting
organized more than three
years ago.
“We welcome anybody who
has any connection to Ripley,
or anybody who just wants to
come out and see what the fuss
is all about. It is definitely going
to a fun weekend.”
A handful of events leading
up to the reunion have already
been held, like a kick-off dance
at the launch of the
2015 Families and
Farms history
book.
But the real
fun begins in the
final week of
July.
“We’re going
to kick things off
on Thursday (July 30) with
the Ambassador pageant,” said
Irwin, adding a teen dance will
follow.
The dances, beer gardens
and the majority of other events
will all take place in the area between the Ripley-Huron Community Complex and the base-
ball diamonds. If you haven’t
already purchased your tickets,
you might be out of luck. They
were being snatched up at a
frantic pace, with the hottest
selling item the $45 wristband,
which gets you into the Friday
and Saturday night dances, as
well as the $5 cover charge for
the Monday afternoon beer
gardens, which will feature Left
Turn Clyde.
The Reunion Golf tournament will be played Friday at
Ainsdale Golf Course, and
Backwater Draw will provide
the entertainment at the Friday
night dance.
After that, the weekend is
jam-packed with events for everyone. A mammoth Reunion
parade will kick off the festivities on Saturday. A BMX stunt
team will entertain the kids on
Saturday, while reunions will be
held for Ripley School and the
Ripley Wolves hockey team. The
Shriners are hosting a Fish Fry,
which will lead into the Saturday
night dance featuring The Lulu’s
Band. Sunday night’s dance will
be preceded by a ham supper at
the beer gardens.
Specific times for various
other events will be posted
on the Ripley Reunion website. Some of those events include historical performances
by HAWK live theatre group
from Lucknow, various sporting
events and tournaments, a beard
growing contest and more. For
a full schedule of events and
more details, go online to www.
ripleyreunion.ca.
Held every 10 years, the
mammoth event is completely
organized by hundreds of volunteers who have worked to make
this an amazing weekend.

Take in Kincardine’s world-class Scottish Festival
For 16 years, the Kincardine
Scottish Festival and Highland
Games has drawn spectators from
across Canada and the United
States for a weekend of all things
Scottish.
More than 10,000 spectators
descend upon Kincardine each
summer to take in competitions by
approximately 30 world-class pipe
bands and 200 highland dancers.
The Heavy Events, held at Station
Beach, feature some of the world’s
strongest men and women competing in events like the caber toss,
sheath throw and hammer throw.
This year will be the 16th annual Kincardine Scottish Festival
and Highland Games, and the
celebrations run July 3, 4 and 5.
Whether you are Scottish or just
temporarily Scottish, there is no
shortage of entertainment and
activities lined up.
All the action begins Friday
night, but the weekend will officially be opened with a Parade of
Clans on Saturday. There will be
pipe band and highland dancing
competitions in Victoria Park all
day Saturday, capped off with the
Saturday night parade, featuring
Kincardine’s own Scottish Pipe
Band and visiting pipe bands. Join
the crowd and follow the band
into Victoria Park for a not-to-be
missed collective performance by
the bands.
The Kincardine Scottish Festival and Highland Games features
nightly concerts July 3 and 4 by
the always entertaining Mudmen
and The Thogs. Joining this year’s
lineup is East Coast Music award
winners the Barra McNeils.
New to the Festival is a series
of cultural workshops. For more
information on program schedules
and the Festival itself, visit www.

Hear the phantom
bagpipes at dusk
The Legend of Donald Sinclair
Copyright 1996, Eric Howald
The sound of the bagpipes will carry along Kincardine’s shoreline
at dusk on many a summer evening during July and August.
The pipe band has decided to have a piper play from atop the
Kincardine lighthouse at sunset (except Saturdays) to honour the
memory of an early Kincardine piper, Donald Sinclair. The story has
been passed along through the generations by word of mouth.
THE LEGEND OF DONALD SINCLAIR
Back in 1856, on a cold, October day, a small vessel left the Port
of Goderich carrying a family from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It was
the final leg of a journey for the immigrant family which intended
to farm at Penetangore (now Kincardine).
The weather was cloudy with a light breeze out of the southwest
when the vessel left Goderich, goes the story. But as the boat approached Point Clark, the sky turned black and a cold wind started
to blow out of the west, making for heavier and heavier seas.
As the vessel slowly beat its way north, late afternoon turned
to dusk and the captain feared he would not find Penetangore in
the dark.

Kincardine celebrates 2nd annual Marine Heritage Days
Kincardine has a truly fascinating and rich marine heritage that
dates back more than 150 years.
Unlike many Ontario towns, Kincardine’s first settlers arrived
aboard the ships that were starting to ply Lake Huron. The Kincardine harbour was an integral part of the area’s economy, moving
people and local products (such as lumber and salt) and supporting
a thriving fishing industry that continues to this day.
At the turn of the 20th century, the heroics of local seamen and
fishermen led to the establishment of a lifesaving service run by a
volunteer crew. This service saved many a life when ships ran into
trouble during fierce storms along the shores of Lake Huron.
Kincardine’s marine history will be celebrated during the 2nd
annual Marine Heritage Days festival Aug. 21 and 22. The festivities
will begin with the arrival of Toronto Brigantine Tall Ships Playfair
and Pathfinder on Aug. 21. Join locals on the pier to greet these
majestic ships and later enjoy a sunset cruise.
On Saturday, the harbour will be a bustle of activity, with tours of
the Tall Ships, a children’s activity zone and artist alley. The historic
Paddy Walker House will feature special marine heritage exhibits,
including photos and artifacts related to Kincardine’s early lifesaving
service. The Lighthouse will also be open for tours.
For more information about Marine Heritage Days activities,
visit the Kincardine Visitors Centre, the Kincardine Tourism Facebook page or email kincardine@sunsets.com.
Legend of the Phantom Piper
(continued from page 22)
Donald Sinclair, fearing
for his family, went down
into the hold and fetched his
pipes. He prayed for safe passage and then played a lament.
The sound of the pipes carried
across the water to Penetangore where another piper heard
the rich sound. The settler on
shore retrieved his pipes and
played another lament in return, just as the sky suddenly
cleared in the west and the sun
set beneath the cold waters.

The captain, knowing he
had to be near Penetangore,
headed for the drone of the
bagpipes and eventually made
his way into the harbour.
For many years after the
narrow escape, Donald Sinclair often went down to the
harbour to play the pipes at
dusk. They say it was a way to
remember his good fortune
and to remind others of the
power of the pipes.

Plenty to bait anglers into a Lake Huron visit
If great fishing isn’t
reward enough, there
are thousands of dollars and countless prizes
available in two fishing
derbies held annually in
Lake Huron’s waters near
Kincardine.
This year will mark
the 30th anniversary
of the Fish Kincardine
Derby. It will kick off on
May 15 and run until
May 24. The Kincardine
Chamber of Commerce
pledged to make the 30th
annual derby a special
one, and though no specifics were available at
the time this publication
was printed, last year
grand prizes totalling
more than $20,000 were
handed out.
At the 2014 Fish
Kincardine Derby, more
than 500 fish were reeled
in and weighed at the
Kincardine Weigh Station. Of those fish, the
biggest one belonged to
David Bedford of Stratford. Bedford brought
in a 19.48-lb lake trout to
claim the Big Fish prize.
Kincardine’s Bill Molnar
had the biggest salmon,
reeling in a 16.26-lb chinook.
Tickets will be available at Canadian Tire,
Lake Huron Rod and

catches of the day and

and other categories.
More than 1,600 fish
were brought in to the
weigh stations last year
by more than 1,500 entrants. The best salmon
belonged to Holstein’s
Murray McKenzie,
whose winning salmon
weighed in at 21.20-lb.
Colleen Elliott of Lambton Shores had the biggest trout at more than
25 pounds.

Kincardine becoming a surfing hot spot
The word is out.
Whenever the waves swell in the waters
of Lake Huron, surfers can be spotted by the
dozen at Station Beach in Kincardine.
Over the past few years, Kincardine
has quickly become a surfing hot spot, and
is now considered to be one of the best
surfing spots in all of Canada. On the right
day, of course.
The best surfing is usually in the spring
and fall, with the West Shore Billabong
Freshwater Classic surfing competition taking place in September the past two years.
When Mother Nature co-operates, surfers
are lucky if they can get 40 days of surfing
in each year.
And it isn’t just locals who are riding the
waves. Most surfers are more than willing to
travel to find the right conditions. The fact
that Station Beach is easily accessible and
equipped with bathrooms and showers has
made Kincardine a popular destination.
"Bruidhinn
Gaidhlig
rium" 16
Surfers enjoy the conditions at Station Beach in Kincardine.
A recent study indicated Lake Huron
has the best surfing conditions in Ontario,
and 70 per cent of surfers ranked Kincardine
as their preferred
destination, based
on swell size, wave
consistency, water
temperature and
beach accessibility.
Strong northwest winds can create some
great waves, head high and over head high,
and the pier allows surfers easier access to
the waves. You can see the surfers walk to
the end of the south pier and jump in the
water instead of paddling out. The fact that
the water drops off from shallow to deep
very quickly creates a little more power in
the waves off Kincardine.

Don’t forget to bring your golf clubs to town!
For many, summer vacation wouldn’t be
a vacation without a round or two of golf.
How about four?
That’s how many options exist within
a short driving distance of downtown
Kincardine. Kincardine Golf and County
Club, Ainsdale Golf Course, Somerhill
Golf Course and Black Horse Golf and

15th Women’s Tri July 11
The Kincardine Women’s Triathlon
will celebrate its 15th anniversary this
year.
The incredibly popular event set for
July 11 sold out on New Year’s Day. The
race includes a 375m swim in Lake Huron, a 12-km bike ride and a 3-km run
that begins, and ends at the Kincardine
Harbour.
Last year, the sun was shining and
Lake Huron was calm for 231 athletes
who entered the sprint triathlon. Another
113 women competed in the duathlon,
which is a 3-km run followed by a 12-km
bike ride and another 3 km run. Debbie
Val finished the triathlon first, winning
with a time of 44:14. She was followed by
Glenna Fraumeni of Toronto, and a local girl, Sophie Hotchkiss of Kincardine.
Waterloo’s Jennifer Roy won the duathlon
with a time of 52:56. A Kincardine team
won the triathlon relay - Lauren Andrews,
Roxanne Andrews and Heidi Martin beat
14 other teams to finish in 47:19.
The Kincardine race is popular with
athletes for a number of reasons. Organizers have learned what works over
the years, and have adapted and made
minor tweaks each year, and the course
is a beautiful one along the shore of Lake
Huron. Finally, the support of Kincardine
residents is unmatched. Last year, one
racer blew a tire and finished the race on
the bicycle of a local who was cheering
the racers on.

with unique challenges.
Kincardine Golf and Country Club is
the oldest of the four. This 9-hole course,
opened in 1906, is located off West Street
at the north end of Kincardine. This 3,000yard course has some recently redesigned
holes, and has a stocked pro shop and club
house with patio and practice facilities. For
tee times, call 519-396-2112.
Ainsdale Golf Course, located on
Highway #21 just south of Kincardine, is an
18-hole course measuring 6,442 from the
championship tees. It features a barrier-free
clubhouse, pro shop, lounge, patio and hall
large enough for banquets and weddings,
and a full driving range and practice facility.
It is a scenic play with enough water hazards
to maintain your focus.
Ainsdale’s sister course is Somerhill Golf
Course, a pretty 9-hole course between
Kincardine and Tiverton on Highway #21.
It covers 2,850 yards of hilly terrain. It’s a
challenging course, but rewarding if you
stay on the fairways. You can book your tee
times online or by telephone. For Ainsdale

Kincardine opens its doors for heritage tour
Doors Open Kincardine is
returning this year and will take
place May 23 and 24. Having moved to a biennial format following the 2013
event, Doors Open will include some new sites, along
with some popular repeats,
and a team of refreshed volunteers ready to make this event
as successful as the previous.
Launched in 2002 by the Ontario Heritage Trust, Doors
Open Ontario is host to many
province-wide events, and communities invite you to discover
the hidden treasures of their
sites – some of which have never
before been open to the public.
Kincardine’s doors will be open
to various sites throughout the
municipality, including, but not
limited to, local heritage homes,
buildings of interest such as the
Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre
and Bruce Telecom headquarters in Tiverton. The tour will
also feature area favourites and
regular participants of the event,
including the Kincardine Lighthouse and Paddy Walker House,
which will once again act as event
headquarters for the weekend.
This free event runs Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. and on Sunday, May 24
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is
something for everyone, young
and old, of varying interests.

on shelves at area sites, as well
as the Tourism office on Queen

Botanical Gardens first of its kind
For a truly unique garden
tour experience, be sure to visit
the Bruce Botanical Food Gardens in Ripley.
The garden, located at the
end of Park Street, is the first
public botanical garden of its
kind in Canada dedicated entirely to heirloom, rare, very
rare, endangered, and world
food plants.
A horticultural enthusiast’s
dream, in the 2015 season these
gardens will feature more than
330 seeded varieties of heirloom
edible flowers, vegetables and
herbs. The Bruce Botanical
Food Gardens has even developed its own apple, the Ripley
Apple, which is now in production and available for purchase.
Wander through the maze of
garden beds filled with brightlycoloured flowers, endless varieties of vegetables, herbs and even
teas. Learn gardening tips and
the sometimes wild history of
the food plants from on-site
volunteers.
During the summer months,
visitors can come and enjoy the
Living Market at the gardens
daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stroll
through the pathways of this
‘open air market’ and select
fresh produce right off the plant
and take a self guided tour. Volunteers will pick for you if you
wish! Bring your own bags to
carry your produce home.
The mission of the Bruce
Botanical Food Gardens is more
than a unique visitor attraction. Its goal is to address issues
around food insecurity and
sustainable lifestyle. Everything
planted in the gardens is edible
in some manner. Like anything
from nature, the Bruce Botanical Food Gardens will continue
to grow and evolve each year,
so be sure to return again and
again for a new experience
each time!

Bus tours and hourly film presentations at Bruce Power
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with additional
new exhibits and bus tours, the
Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre
remains a popular destination
for all age groups.
Located on a bluff that looks
out over the world’s largest
nuclear power development,
the Visitors’ Centre is located
on Bruce Road 20, north of
Tiverton, directly beside Ontario’s first commercial wind
farm, Huron Wind. It features
a 100-seat theatre for hourly
film presentations and a recently
renovated exhibit hall with
dozens of interactive displays
that illustrate how more than
60 per cent of Ontario’s electricity is produced using nuclear
technology.
Group presentations can be
arranged year-round and dropin visitors are also welcome. Bus
tours of the 2,300-acre Bruce
Power site can be booked for

“Drop-in visitors generally
spend about 90 minutes at the
Visitors’ Centre to take in a
film presentation and view the
exhibit hall,” said Rob Liddle,
Bruce Power’s Community Relations Manager. “Prearranged
groups often request a special
presentation, so those visits
involve a bit more time. The
bus tours have to be booked in
advance. They include an orientation in the theatre followed
by a brief security check and the
hour-long bus ride.”
The Visitors’ Centre is open
year-round from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Monday to Friday, as well
as Saturdays in July in August.

The Kincardine Scottish march down Queen Street last summer in a Saturday night parade. First parade this year is June 27.
Kincardine Scottish open marching season June 27
The Saturday night parade is one of the
things that makes Kincardine unique. This
year, the first march will be June 27.
The Kincardine Scottish has been entertaining tourists and locals with its Saturday
evening parades since 1948.
Each Saturday the band leaves Victoria
Park at 8 p.m., marches up Queen Street to
Quinn Plaza (north of Durham Street) and
back again to Victoria Park where it gives
a concert.
Following the parade, people gather in
the park to listen to the band, renew old
friendships and make some new ones.
The Kincardine Scottish boast the
longest record of unbroken service in
Ontario.

Explore Kincardine
with Adventure Passport
Bruce County offers visitors many unique and diverse
sites and experiences. One of
the best ways to discover them
is with the Explore the Bruce
Adventure Passport.
The passport is a large
scale scavenger hunt that takes
participants on a self-guided
tour of Bruce County. At each
location, visitors can stop and
punch their passport for an
opportunity to win prizes,
including mini-getaway packages, adventure packages and
restaurant vouchers. In addition, the first 2,000 participants who visit at least
seven stops will receive a free
Explore the Bruce t-shirt.
This year’s Adventure Passport has a Kincardine focus.
The ‘Kincardine March’ will
take visitors on a tour of five
scenic sites, including Geddes
Park, Rotary Park, MacPherson Park, the Rock Garden
and Harbour Street.
As well, the Queen’s Lookout in Kincardine will be one
of 12 Adventure Passport
stops.
This year’s Adventure Passport event will run from May
1 to Oct. 31. You can pick up
your passport at information
centres around the county or

Some of Lake Huron’s history can be found just a few
steps into the water.
In the spring of 1999, the
remains of a sailing vessel that
sank off Kincardine on Oct. 7,
1902, could be clearly seen close
to shore.
Back in July of 1978, the lake
uncovered some of the cargo
that the Ann Maria was carrying when it sank - large blocks
of coal.
On the night she sank, a
hard breeze was blowing from
the west and northwest.
The captain was reportedly
driving his ship hard to get to
port before the gale headed
him off.
His vessel opened up under the hard driving seas and
the water was gaining on the
pumps. Her cargo of coal would
drag her down once the water
had overcome the small reserve
flotation of her 12 inches of
freeboard.
As she approached Kincardine, the Ann Maria staggered
and missed the entrance to the
harbour. She came rolling in on
the beach, struck heavily a few
hundred yards from shore and
started to break up.
In the rescue attempt, the
captain, the cook, a sailor and a
rescuer died.
The battered boat was swept
shorewards and tossed up on
the beach.
When the lake is low on a
clear day, you can see the remains of the Ann Maria from
the shore, just south of the
harbour entrance.

Sundial is memorial for Dr. Solomon Secord
One of Kincardine’s earliest and best-loved characters was Dr.
Solomon Secord.
Born in 1834, Secord was a great-nephew of the Canadian
heroine Laura Secord. He arrived in Kincardine shortly after his
graduation from medical school.
He headed for Georgia just before the Civil War and was almost
hanged because he had the courage to speak out against slavery.
Despite his beliefs, he ended up enlisting in the Confederate Army
as a doctor.
Although he died a century ago, Secord remains a subject of
interest to historians. U.S. Civil War history buff Les Buell of New
York State seems to be a regular visitor to Kincardine’s Walker House
as he continues his research on Secord. Buell addressed the Civil
War Surgeons’ conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee in March of
2009. One of his subjects was Secord.
On July 1, 1994, the Donaldson Artillery of American Civil
War Historical ReEnactment Society laid a wreath at the Secord
Memorial and followed that with a musket volley.
Following the Civil War, Secord returned to Kincardine where
he became a first-rate surgeon and diagnostician. He was a good
doctor and a lovable character; the people of the area refused to
forget him when he died in 1910.
A fund was set up and a few months later, a memorial with a
sundial was erected near the Kincardine library on Queen Street.
Dr. Secord is buried in the Kincardine Cemetery.

Restored Point Clark Lighthouse reopens to visitors
Cornfest is always a popular event in Point Clark, and features great food, live entertainment and a car show. This year, it is set for Aug. 18 at the lighthouse.
The Point Clark Lighthouse has received a facelift and will be open to visitors
this summer.
The national historic landmark has
been closed since 2010 by Parks Canada
to allow for restoration work on the lighthouse tower and turret.
The lighthouse was built during the
1850s and played a vital role in navigation
on Lake Huron. It served to warn sailors
of a shoal located three kilometres off the
shoreline of Point Clark.
The limestone tower is 87 feet tall
and topped with a 12-sided lantern. The
lightkeeper’s house has been converted
into a museum, which is operated by the
Township of Huron-Kinloss throughout
the summer, from June to Labour Day.
In 2009, the Point Clark Lighthouse
was selected by Canada Post as one of
six across the country to be featured on a
postage stamp.
The lighthouse is located on Lighthouse Road off Huron Road in Point
Clark.
