Remembering Marge Yukil
IN BRIEF....
By Juliette van Eerdewijk, Principal, The Ela Murray International School
IEA launches newspaper column
On Wednesday, 8 January, we sadly lost our much-loved Ms Marge Yukil to
cancer. This was a great loss to TEMIS and to the community. Marge’s love of
life and enthusiasm for everything she did will always be remembered. The
number of people who attended her funeral on Saturday, 11 January, was a
testament to the impact she had on so many lives.
IEA launches its first ever column in the
Post Courier on Friday 14th March, called
IEAStori. It will appear fortnightly on Friday.
It is a 38cm x 3 column deep and will feature
information, news and stories of learning
and successes from IEA and its schools. The
next cloumn will be on the 28th March.
Marge was a proud Papua New Guinean who went out of her way to ensure
that we ‘dim-dims’ had an understanding of her culture and were comfortable in its traditions. Marge Yukil was one of nature’s great life forces. She always appeared larger than life itself and she provided both love and laughter
to all those she worked with. You always knew when Marge was anywhere
nearby because you could hear that wonderful loud and long laugh of hers.
IEA Principals Conference
IEA Principals Conference 2014 will be held
from April 12th -15th at the Grand Papua
Hotel, Downtown, Port Moresby.

Marge Yukil was a person with a great big heart for her family and her deep love for them, as well as
the love and dedication she had for her job as a PE teacher at TEMIS. Her dedication to her family
and her students was remarkable and driven by selflessness. Nothing was too much for her. As a PE
teacher she spent many extra hours and days on the field just to ensure that competitions were going
well, or that everyone had an opportunity to be the best they could be. She spent many Saturdays in
school giving up much of her own time for our students. She was so thankful for all she had in her life
and that included our school.
She had an amazing ability to welcome people into her life and share everything she had with them.
Her openness and kindness were there for all to see. Being an international school with a transient
staff and student population, Marge was one of the key figures who held this school together. She was
a rock for teachers, CAs and students of all ages and was always ready to do anything she could even
before she was called upon – for any reason.
She was candid and open in her communications with people, and stood up for what she believed in.
She cared deeply about our school and the whole community. She was a strong-willed lady who was
determined to do the right thing. She had a strong sense of right and wrong.
Her illness at the end proved how incredibly strong she was. Her incredible faith helped her through
the many difficult weeks. She was an example to all of us, her strength and willpower were remarkable. She was larger than life and such a positive force. She laughed and cried with us all and it is almost
impossible to believe that she has left us. But Marge has left a great legacy behind. To be so loved by
so many, to have had such an impact on so many and to be so badly missed by so many is something
we all hope for. Marge achieved that. She may have left this world in body, but she will forever be alive
in our hearts. To our beloved sister Marge, rest in peace.
Community Support
IEA supports Business & Professional Women’s Club
Business & Professional Women’s Club (BPW) once again hosted its major fundraiser, The International Women’s Day Breakfast, on the 10th of March. BPW has been privileged in the last few years
to have the support of IEA as a Gold Sponsor and this year was no exception.
The primary aim of the breakfast is to raise money for scholarships to help PNG women and girls
continue with their education. A secondary aim is to raise the profile of BPW generally to increase
membership and gain further support for the scholarship program. In addition to providing scholarships the BPW conducts training activities and offers a mentoring program, supports women in
business and addresses issues of concern to women, in particular family and sexual violence as well
as women’s participation in parliament.
This year BPW hosted the breakfast with the Australian High Commission as their chief sponsor.
In line with BPW international theme, “Inspiring Change” it encourages advocacy for women’s advancement everywhere in every way. It calls for challenging the status quo for women’s equality and
vigilance inspiring positive change.
Special guest speaker was the Australian High Commissioner, Deborah Stokes as well as Minister for
Higher Education, Hon. Delilah Gore, Amanda Donigi, publisher of Stella Magazine and Lana Kami of
Coaliton for Change who have inspired change in PNG to be part of a panel of speakers.

POMIS STUDENTS DEMAND AN END
TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
On 14 February 2013, one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced to
demand an end to violence against women and girls
POMIS students joined local organisations to end violence against
women. Vanessa had more than the message against violence, there was
also a demonstration of self-defence techniques. One POMIS student, Grade
12 Guise, helped to demonstrate a technique for breaking an attack from
behind.
This year, on Valentine’s Day, POMIS students attended the Port Moresby
“Dance for Freedom” at Ela Beach. Organiser Vanessa Kerton; “The Dance
for Freedom is an annual event which aims to make violence against women
a thing of the past. As violence towards women is a pressing issue in PNG
and the world, this event is for us as global citizens to take a stand against
something which has crippled societies for millennia.”
POMIS students are regularly involved in events that show our commitment
to behaving ethically and collaboratively.
From left; the attack begins, Guise defends himself, and down goes the attacker!

12th Grade 8 Annual Graduation at Popondetta - Theme: Learning together
By Kenneth Liwayong, Principal, Popondetta International School
Popondetta International School held its grade 8 annual graduation
on Thursday 5th December, 2013. It was a low-key, but celebration
with backing from parents and local business houses. The support
was mainly in sponsorship of academic and sporting awards, including the grade 8 Dux award.
The day started with a formal procession from the car park, led by
graduands and followed by invited guests and other dignitaries.
The graduating students who dressed up in their formal attire for
the occasion looked absolutely stunning. Our guest speaker was the
CEO of Popondetta General Hospital, a parent and Board member,
Dr. Gunzee Gawin, who delivered a short and powerful speech to our
graduands. The most beneficial thing was that he spoke about his experience; how he was able to fight the odds to be where he is. It was
a moving keynote with emphasis on the significance of persevering,
an inspirational impetus.
After the keynote, we had awards from pre-school to grade 6, than
followed by grade 7/8 subject awards, sports awards, special awards
and finally the Dux award. The grade 8 internal and external Dux
award recipient was Fisine Gawin who scored above 45 in all her COBEE results except English Language where she scored exceptionally
well in all of her COBEE results. In general, our grade 8 students did
well. We thanked everyone who contributed towards this achievement.
What appeared to be a structured and formal day, ended with light
refreshments for the invited guests. Everyone attended expressed
full satisfaction.
On behalf of the school we would like to acknowledge and thank the
following award sponsors;
1. Popondetta Stationery Limited
2. Neil Automotives
3. Oro Fuel Agency
4. Coca Cola – for donating their tents
5. Quick Pest Control

FATHER CHRISTMAS de “SANTA CLAUS” VISITS POPONDETTA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
By Kenneth Liwayong, Principal, Popondetta International School
On Friday 29th of November last year Popondetta International School was fortunate to have a visit from
Father Christmas de “Santa Claus” all the way from
the North Pole. It was a long and tiring journey but
the good Santa brought along gifts and presents for
all the students from pre-school to grade 8, as well as
teachers and ancillary staff.
Santa Claus made his grand entry via a fire truck to a
rousing welcome at 10:30 am after his tour around
Popondetta town ship. As soon as Santa Claus entered
the school, he was formally welcomed by the school
head girl and boy; Fisine Gawin and Koisen Robert respectively. From the car park he was escorted to the
assembly area by the two student leaders and the
Principal where he was received with standing
ovation by students, teachers, ancillary staff and parents alike. Students along with teachers and parents
sang welcome Christmas carols. The atmosphere was
filled with laughter and excitement.
After spending a quality 60 minutes with POPIS Big
Family, Santa Claus finally announced that it was time
for him to leave and returned back to the North Pole.
As the students sang a farewell song, Santa Claus was
escorted back to a waiting police vehicle by the Principal. He promised everyone in attendance that he will
visit the school same time this year and everyone is
looking forward for his visit. Everyone including the
parents who attended enjoyed the day. It was indeed
an exciting experience.
POPIS Santa Claus visit pictures in review.
Our students were privileged to have
received gifts from Santa. It was indeed
an exciting celebration as it puts smiles
on everyone’s’ face. Thank you parents
for being part of this celebration…well
done!

Creating an Invitation to Play
By Kerry Honey, TEMIS Early Learning Centre
At The Ela Murray International School Early Learning Centre, we
believe in a play-based approach to learning and development in the
early childhood area. Our practice is becoming increasingly influenced by
the Reggio Emilia Approach, an internationally acclaimed early childhood
program which was created in the aftermath of World War II in a small
town in Italy.
One of the key principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach is the belief in
the environment as the third teacher, with parents being the first teacher
and teachers in educational facilities the second.
Reggio Emilia educators believe that the layout of the physical space in
schools and the aesthetic arrangement of activities encourages children
to make choices, solve problems, discover and engage in the process of
learning.
When teachers intentionally create an invitation to play by arranging
resources with the intention of attracting young children to engage in
an activity, children are naturally drawn to explore, question, investigate,
discover, examine, participate, persevere, touch, feel, manipulate and
experience and learn about the world around them.
Much to their credit, teachers at The Ela Murray International School are
successfully striving to build on their professional practice in this area.
