Best Blues Album Best Rhythm and Blues www.missyandersen.com B orn in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Queens, New York, Missy Andersen has been singing since her mother entered her in a child talent contest at age six. She practiced everyday with her mother, but for some reason the contest was canceled. The afternoon practice sessions stopped, but Missy was hooked from then on. “Singing would always be my friend and I would turn to it whenever I needed to express something I couldn’t find the words to say,” says Missy. Her parents had an extensive music collection that included lots of soul, R&B, blues, jazz, and gospel. Her favorite songs were always the ones that told a story. It wasn’t always the most popular song on the album, but she would play them over and over. She listened to Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, The Staple Singers, Teddy Pendergrass and a host of others. And like many before her, Missy mimicked other singers until she found her own voice. Later she would discover Dinah Washington, “Something about Sarah Vaughn, and Billie Holiday and that eventually lead her to O.V. soul speaks to me. Wright, Bobby Bland, Little Milton, James Carr, Ray Charles, Ann And if you dip it in Peebles, and Irma Thomas. some blues, it’s even better. It the story and the feeling. It isn’t always pretty, but you can always feel it when it’s done right. That’s all I want to do. I want to sing my story in a way that both the listener and I can feel.” ~ Missy Andersen Missy began fronting bands in her early teens, playing local venues and eventually doing studio sessions as a background vocalist. She con- tinued honing her skills and moved to San Diego, California where she met local blues man, Earl Thomas in the late 90’s. It was then that she became one of the original Juke Joint Jezebelles, a gospel, blues, and soul quartet, who provided backup vocals for Earl’s stage show. She played and toured with Earl for several years hitting festivals and venues in the U.S. and Europe. Earl Thomas and the Jezebelles shared the stage with Ray Charles, B.B. King, Robert Cray, John Hammond, Keb’ Mo’, Kenny Neal, and The Meters. After fronting San Diego-based band, Tell Mama, Missy felt it was time to strike out on her own. Her self-titled debut album, Missy Andersen, released on Main Squeeze Records, is an organic mix of soul and blues that has a classic approach with a contemporary feel. She displays her talents on 8 tunes, including two originals - ‘New Feet’ (track 2) and ‘Stand Up and Dance’ (track 8). Missy Andersen (vocals) is joined by her husband and bandleader Heine Andersen (guitar), Asmus Jensen (drums), Jeppe Juul (organ) and Søren Bøjgaard (bass). Additional musicians include Nathan James playing Dobro slide guitar on track 8. Receiving positive reviews from both critics and fans since its release, the CD was nominated for a 2009 San Diego Music Award in the Best Blues Album category. In addition, Missy received a nomination for a Lifeworks Entertainment Award for Best Rhythm & Blues. "I have always loved Missy's voice and style. She has a truly original sound and her phrasing of the melody is creative, intelligent, soulful, and, in my humble opinion, puts her in the league with any of the great contemporary female (or male for that matter) soul/blues vocalists. The band is tight, right on point, and perfectly complements her vocal delivery." ~ Earl Thomas “Andersen has a real feel for the blues and soul and richly resonant, at times throaty contralto tones that she uses to caress and bite down on the material at hand...an impressive debut disc.” ~ “Missy Andersen not only lives up to her obligations as a singer; she blows them out of the water. One moment she's growling out some charged-up funk lyrics and the next her voice is aching from the blues. Even more impressive is the breadth of her range as she's able to climb and descend the scale with equal ease so that no matter where on it she's at, she's not showing any strain whatsoever.” ~ “Missy Andersen has recorded a remarkable debut disc. Old school, soulful vocals with a classic approach. The dynamic horn section on this CD is just a thrill to listen to.” ~ “Steeped in the traditions of the classic soul and blues stylists, Missy's self-titled debut release is an eight-cut affair that gives her an opportunity to show off her beautiful vocal styles.” ~ “The closing “Stand Up And Dance” is given an almost country blues feel by Nathan James’ down home Dobro playing and Asmus Jensen’s sparse drumming – very nice though, and a fitting end to a most enjoyable release – highly recommended for all lovers of classic soul and blues.” ~ “While there is a glut of talent less singers currently on the airwaves, here’s one that deserves to be heard. Finally, a voice that runs the spectrum without breaking a sweat and has the ability of cruise through songs where others fear to even take the chance because they know they’d only look foolish.” ~ “Soulful vocals is what you will find in abundance on Missy Andersen’s self titled debut album. Missy Andersen proves beyond a doubt that she’s the real deal.” ~ "Missy Andersen" is, despite the fact that it is a debut, a very mature album. Andersen’s voice is unique, forceful, but never overbearing.” ~ “Singer Missy Andersen’s self-titled debut dials a magical classic soul sound. Andersen is a sultry vocalist with range and power, and the musicians have absolute grasp of the idiom.” ~ -Detroit, MI Highway 61 Blues With A Feeling -Detroit, MI Bluestime -Detroit, MI No Boys A-Loud -Detroit, MI The Electric Olive-try -Grand Rapids, MI Pete Bruinsma -Grand Rapids, MI #48-August 2009 -Mount Pleasan, MI The Juke Joint #2-September 2009 Lunchtime Blues -Three Oaks, MI #2-October 2009 -Traverse City, MI Blue Monday 89.1 Jazz with Linda Yohn -Ypsilanti, MI Blues Before Monday -Mankato, MN #10-July 10, 2009 Sugar Shop -Minneapolis, MN #3-July 17, 2009 Blues 'n Boogie -Bethany, MO #2-July 24, 2009 -Springfield, MO Back Alley Blues Show #8-July 30, 2009 Blues On the Move -Missoula, MT C.B.
