Accepting
All our lives we've lived in a world where men were expected to act one way and women another. When a man adopted
behavior identified as the property of females he was called a sissy and when a woman acted in a "male" fashion she was
called a tomboy (when very young) and a dyke after she passed a certain age.
That simple view of how the society we live in categorizes masculinity and femininity is a way of saying we are products
of our upbringing and the environment in which we live.
The process of making ourselves into people free of prejudices is a difficult one, if not impossible. By accepting
ourselves as Lesbians we did not automatically achieve the tolerance and objectivity we view the heterosexual world as
lacking.
Although we broke the norm by accepting women as our lovers and primary companions, many of us also adopted the
male/female roles we have observed all our lives and often rejected. Locked into our role-playing, we sometimes never get
beyond the sex act in our growth as woman/Lesbian.
To grow as a Lesbian means to redefine ourselves.
It is accepting first of all that we are women, not men, and therefore different in our sensibilities and outlook.
It is being aware of ourselves as a political force which can create changes if we are united in wanting them.
It is making sure we are never victimized by the heterosexual world or other Lesbians who would seek to perpetuate the
male/female power roles.
It is opening ourselves to the good things in the world — the entire world — and not closing ourselves off from the
heterosexual world. Be a friend to a "straight" today.
It is finding solace and companionship in each other rather than in abusing substances.
It is, probably most of all, accepting that among a group of people who have chosen to stand outside the accepted
norm, there are differences. But those differences will only become problems if we fail to listen with the object of
understanding and we fail to care.
The Lesbians of Central Florida are a wonderful sight to behold. The future can hold even more wonderful things if we
work to make it so. The future is what we do today.

OPL is our library too!
Have you ever wanted to read a good lesbian novel on a
dull winter night? Or wanted to lounge on a blanket at the
beach and soak up the sun while you perused an exciting,
dyke mystery? Well, don't expect to find your reading at
the Orlando Public Library. A recent informal survey of
their card catalogue turned up a number of gay books, but
they were almost exclusively nonfiction.
That is not to say that the library does not have a book
you might want to read. Several very good books about
being gay and about particular aspects of gay life were
listed. Many of those, however, were unavailable at the
time, whether because they are popular or because they
have disappeared is uncertain.
Lesbian fiction seems to be a mystery to the folks at
OPL, though. None of the lesbian novels produced by
Naiad Press were listed in the catalogue. "Classic" novels,
such as RubyfruitJungle, also seem to be lacking. In fact,
only two of Rita Mae Brown's books were listed — Southern Discomfort and Six of One — neither of which is
particularly "gay." Also, neither of them was on the shelf
that day. Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah was listed but
also unavailable.
Four June Role novels are held by the library. I had
better luck with them than with Rita Mae's; two were
actually on the shelf. I found no listings for Renee Vivien or
Natalie Clifford Barney, both forerunners of the modern
lesbian writer. Gertrude Stein was represented, however,
fairly well.
Since I'm a fantasy and science fiction fan I was disappointed to find no mention of Joanna Russ' classic The
Female Man or Sally Miller Gearhart's The Wanderground. OPL does have the last two volumes of Elizabeth
A. Lynn's The Chronicles of Torpor, but not, inexplicably,
the first, Watchtower.
Perhaps we at LCN can do something to make books
WE want to read available more readily in Orlando. If you
have a favorite lesbian novel or a non-fiction book that has
really helped you, ask for it at the circulation desk at the
library. Or write a letter requesting the titles and authors
you want to see. With the expansion of the library going on
now, we should see a flood of new books hitting the
shelves. Some of those could be OUR books.

Remember to be polite and civil in your letter; public
institutions do not react to rudeness any better than you
do. Do not request porn (they won't stock the straight
variety either). Be specific where you can. If you can't
remember the title or the author's name, ask the reference
librarian to show you how to use Books in Print, a handy
skill for anyone who likes to read.

true stories by both ex-nuns and present nuns who are
also Lesbians.
Their book published by Naiad Press, to be available

Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence is certain to be
among the most controversial books of this or any other
year. It shatters many of the myths surrounding this
sacred religious life.

Violence against women takes many forms including
murder, rape, battering, sexual harassment and violent
pornography. Women are at risk in their homes, on the
streets and at their jobs. Statistics show that three out of
four women in America will be attacked at least once in
their lives.
Therefore, a coalition of women's organizations have united to organize and participate in this march to protest
violence against women in every form it occurs. The
action will take place on Saturday. April 27 at 7:00 p.m.
in Williams Park in St. Petersburg.
Join us there to protest violence against women and the

What is it, what are they, or why would any woman
want to be a man? These questions plus many more
are ones that have been asked of us lately. I never realized that women may not understand why we do male
impersonation. I would like to try my best to enlighten
you. I will only speak for our group (Little Tex and the
Outlaws) even though I feel as if we would be in agreement with other male impersonators. What we do is
strictly for entertairinient. We don't do male impersonation because we want to be men, we're proud to be
women. We enjoy entertaining, that's the bottom line.
If something we do makes you feel good or makes you
laugh, then we've accomplished what we set out to do.
I like to think it would be a chance for you to see women
entertaining you, rather than a man. We do what we do
for you! I think it's important that you remember we're
just like you! It's just that we're crazy enough to get
up there, which is not easy. There hasn't been one time
that I've gotten up on stage without butterflies
in my stomach.
We've discovered that a good many people want to
talk to us but are afraid to. When asked why, they
say because you're entertainers. That doesn't make us
untouchable! We love it when ya'll come up and
talk to us, tip us or request certain songs. It makes us
feel like you enjoy what we're doing, and that you
appreciate it.
Sunday, April 14th at Face To Face will be the final
performances[8:30 & 10:00] of Little Tex and the Outlaws. If you've never seen us, come on out and party
with us. Support the women who are entertaining for you.
I would like to thank everyone who stood behind us,
traveled with us and loved us, without all of you there
would never have been a Little Tex and the Outlaws.

Happy Easter
They came from Gainesville, Titusville, Vero Beach,
Cape Canaveral, Atlanta, Daytona, Cocoa and Orlando.
Over 250 womyn gathered at Face To Face to see
and hear the hillarious, outrageous, out-of-sane...
ROBIN TYLER.
The "standing room only" crowd got a chance to see
a nationally known lesbian comic. What a great feeling
to know that WE the Central Florida lesbian community
can and will support womyn entertainers.
As Robin Tyler put it, comedy is the razor sharp
edge of the truth made humorous. Covering issues
such as breaking up, being butch, coming out, religion
and politics, Robin did a superb job of getting the
truth across while still "Just Kidding". Nothing is
sacred with this woman.
Robin's closing remarks on "coming out" and
being counted, were as powerful as her comedy.
Every one of us have to live with ourselvesi24 hours
a day...whether we choose to live a lie or the truth is
up to each of us. But, in order to make change, we
must become a unified force and be counted.
Thank you Robin, for enlightening our day and opening our eyes a little bit more. We are still growing, and
our day will come.

Exciting News;
From Joy MCC
On last week-end Joy MCC held a series of meetings
at a local Baptist Church which is for sale. As a result
of the meetings and the discussions among those who
attended, Joy MCC has voted to pursue the purchase
of this facility as a church home. The exciting thing is
that there would be space available for a number of
community organizations to hold meetings and social
events. JMCC hopes to involve these organizations so
that our community can be more organized and
effective in our community.
MCC is especially happy at the response-from some
of the members of LCN Express and hope that we can
work together on some exciting and meaningful projects. A number of the members of LCN Express
attended our dinner last Saturday night and were very
encouraging in their remarks. For this show of interest
and concern we are most grateful.

The Easter Bunny
Joy Metropolitan Community Church is having a Sunrise Service Easter Sunday at 6 A.M. at Lake Eola Park.
The service will be held in the group seating area of the
park near the corner of Eola and Robinson.
Afterwards there will be an Easter egg hunt for the
children of Joy's Sunday School class. MCC invites any of
you who have childfen to bring them out to join the
festivities. Grown-up "kids" can join in, too.
The Joy Sunday School Bunch meets during the
weekly church service, which begins at 7:15 at the New
Age Center at 2600 Curry Ford Road. The children, who
currently range in age from 5 to 10, hear Bible stories and
participate in skits, art activities, role-playing and other
learning activities.
All children are invited to visit Joy MCC with their mothers and friends. For more information about the Sunday
School BUnch or about the Sunrise Service and egg hunt

Just got this month's issue (April) of "Ms. Magazine"
and thought, "How thoughtful of my friend to give me
such a fine Christmas present" This friend, incidentally, is
a woman and a lesbian. I have another friend that has
recently come into my life, equally as thoughtful, sensitive,
caring, generous, pleasant, intelligent, open-minded,
honest and sincere. This friend is a man.
As I was reading my magazine, warmed by the friendship I have with the person who gave it to me, I read the
following letter to the editor:
I was encouraged to find in the profile of Holly
Near, by Lindsy Van Gelder, that she toured with
male musicians, but discouraged to find that she
was criticized for it. She deserves praise for
understanding that sharing a stage with men
doesn't negate the right to sexual preference, but
is a living metaphor for the utter necessity to
cooperate with and help one another.
