People have always admired the way she is groomed, and I learned to do it myself. Grooming even a small dog can be at least $45 in our area. I started by going to a beauty supply warehouse and bought the smallest “Peanut” clipper on sale. It was about $30. Then I learned to trim the feet and face. For a scissors, I use about a 6” shears. I bought combs and poodle type brushes at a local pet supply store. I found many good YouTube videos about dog grooming. I also found poodle grooming books at the library. I have also found using a dremel tool frequently on dog toenails works great. I do just a nail or two at one time. It has saved many vet or groomer costs for this one thing. Our PetSmart charges $10 just for a toenail trim. Anyone can do this, and it does help to have my therapy dog clean and well-groomed for visits. I have saved hundreds of dollars and can now afford a good cordless electric clipper. I also attend dog shows when possible and watch groomers, asking for tips when they have free time. Most of the time, they are so proud of their dogs and flattered to be asked how they make their dogs look so good. Egyptians used a form of toothpaste over 5,000 years ago. Are You Killing Your Hairdryer? After replacing several hair dryers that just stopped working, I realized that by cleaning the screen on the back of the dryer with an old toothbrush, it helped the air flow, which kept the dryer from burning out. It makes sense, then, to carefully select a contractor who will help you find the right system for your home, install it, and provide the technical assistance needed to keep it running efficiently. To help with that selection process, here are some tips from the experts at the Coleman(r) Heating and Air Conditioning brand of Johnson Controls: 1. Learn as much as you can about heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to conduct interviews with potential contractors. 2. Ask family, friends, co-workers, real estate agents and home improvement specialists for recommendations. 3. Visit the Better Business Bureau website to check the consumer ratings of a contractor. This site also shows the volume of complaints lodged against a contractor. 4. Check for membership in professional organizations. Find out if the contractor and the technicians in his/her company are certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE). 5. Here are hints on how: • Reduce, reuse, recycle: Take a look around—a simple mental checklist of reusable, recyclable items can make a world of difference with no more effort than a weekly dropoff. For example, take old books and donate them to a school or library. If you buy eggs in cartons, drop the empties off at an elementary school or after-school center to be used for art projects. If you're renovating your home or even Fall Special 25% OFF Any Service Simple Repairs to Complete Renovations • Interior/Exterior Renovations • Gutter Cleaning • Roofing • Siding • Windows/Doors just planning a few small home improvement projects, remember that just about everything, from old flooring to doorknobs and light fixtures, can be repurposed by a charity if not by you. • Eat and drink your way to a healthier planet: How (and what) you eat can make a big impact on the environment and the community. Farmers' markets are often bursting with fresh produce. Supporting one helps preserve the vitality of community agriculture. Buying local means produce is fresher—it hasn't been shipped from hundreds of miles away. To keep those fruits and veggies fresher longer, you can get BAC K H O E a refrigerator with humidity-controlled crispers. Using your refrigerator's water dispense system and a reusable bottle instead of bottled water can keep up to 300 plastic bottles a year from ending up in landfills. • Let the housework do the saving for you: New home appliances are far more efficient than older models. New washers such as the Energy Star-certi- fied Amana 3.6-cu.-ft., high-efficiency washer use 75 percent less water and 82 percent less energy than those manufactured just a decade ago. If you've been considering a new washer or dryer, the good news is it could save you money on your utility bills. • Learn more: You can find additional facts on efficient appliances at www.amana. com. A man’s work is nothing but this slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first opened. -Albert Camus Eliminates high heating bills. Many people with diabetes use these supplies-including blood glucose meters and testing strips-to monitor their blood glucose (also known as “blood sugar”). Learning to use and maintain a blood glucose meter usually requires practice, and, over time, patients often become very comfortable with a particular meter. This is important, because consistent blood glucose monitoring is critical to help people with diabetes track blood glucose levels, identify the best approach to control their diabetes, and avoid the potentially serious complications of the disease.2 Medicare Changes The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently instituted a new program that reduces Medicare reimbursement for certain diabetes testing supplies, including blood glucose test strips, for people with diabetes.3 These changes could Kachline Farms 7535 Franklin Hill Rd., Bangor, PA 18013 484-560-4537 Honey Crisp, McIntosh, Gala, Courtland, MacCoun, Granny Smith, Fuji, Double Red Delicious & Golden Delicious Pumpkins, Apple Cider, Apple Butter & Spreads limit seniors’ access to their preferred diabetes testing supplies-those they’re comfortable using and that their doctors recommend. CMS may suggest that patients switch to unfamiliar products, causing confusion or frustration. Or worse, according to a survey by the American Association of Diabetes Educators,4 patients who can no longer access the products they’re comfortable using may test their blood glucose AU-003373L “We Sell Everything Under the Sun” 800-668-1239 570-629-9200 Robert J. Finding Support A number of resources are available to help seniors with diabetes understand and manage the Medicare changes and make it easier for them to access their familiar supplies or, alternatively, find new products that are both appropriate for them and affordable. My husband thought his dad put the cap on the gas can and was driving around when it spilled. After many useless remedies, we finally resorted to putting clay kitty litter over the area of the gas spill. After a day, we vacuumed it and covered it with the litter again. I think we did this two or three times with great results. There was no more gas odor. Be careful not to allow any moisture near the cat litter or it could turn into “mud” on your carpet, and be sure to clean with a vacuum with very strong suction to get all the litter out. Tires get cold, too, and when they’re cold, all-season tires don’t perform to their full potential. In fact, in temperatures as cool as 45 degrees or below, the rubber in all-season tires gradually hardens, leading to decreased road traction and less grip, causing difficulty with braking and turning. Winter tire safety experts at Discount Tire urge drivers to consider their cold weather climate; if it is regularly below 45 degrees, it’s time for a set of winter tires to keep you and your family safe on the roads this year. “Too often, motorists associate winter tires with only snow and ice,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “At Discount Tire, we take winter tire safety seriously and know it’s important for drivers to realize that all-season tires can suffer performance issues on any driving surface when temperatures drop below 45 degrees, snow or no snow.” Winter tires use specially engineered tread rubber with enhanced compound to add the extra grip needed in winter driving conditions that helps keep a car safely in motion without skidding off the road. This added grip provides 25 to 50 percent more traction in snow and ice than regular all-season tires. Tread design in winter tires also uses thousands of extra traction edges for exceptional grip in cold weather driving conditions where ice, snow, slush and water may be present. What drivers may not realize is precipitation can actually pack in the larger grooves on all-season tires, leading to dangerous skidding and impaired braking. Five tire and road safety tips for winter this year: 1. Replace your all-season tires with superior cold traction winter tires if you regularly drive in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. Make sure to replace all four tires to avoid an unsafe traction mismatch. 2. Don’t forget the For Sale 89 Jag XJS V12, 71k, Red, Excel.
