We need to monitor the A120
improvements through Standon. The
draft Neighbourhood Plan says the
parish council will try to ensure there is
consultation about such proposals, but
we may have to lobby for the changes
that improve our quality of life, rather
than just the flow of traffic. The main
concerns expressed previously to
STANDonA120 were traffic speed ,
resulting in excessive noise, severance
of the community, discouragement of
cycling and even of walking where the
pavements are narrow, and air pollution.
All these are factors acknowledged as
relevant in government guidelines.
I believe that the only way to alleviate
these problems is to revert to the
STANDonA120 proposal for average
speed cameras. We came close to getting
agreement on this proposal in 2008,
when a meeting set up by Sir Oliver
Heald MP found that there were no
technical difficulties with the proposal,
but that it was contrary to
Hertfordshire’s policy on speed cameras
and that it was very expensive.
At that time, David Beatty was our
county councillor and he undertook to
try to get the policy changed, but he
became ill and then gave up his seat.
Without his support, we were unable to
get the policy change, which requires
four people to be killed or seriously
injured before cameras are considered.

Have you noticed the
increase in aircraft flying
low over our villages?
Over several months I have telephoned
the Stansted Noise Line to report
aeroplanes for flying low and loud. This
should not be happening, aircraft should
be flying on the outskirts of the villages
of Standon and Puckeridge only.
The Noise Line response was that this
was within the guidelines which I find
extremely worrying. I have been in
contact with Stop Stansted Expansion
and our Parish Council who forwarded
my concerns onto Councillor Graham
McAndrew who forwarded it to Stansted
Airport Environment Committee.
However, on 23 October, I was walking
the dog between 6-6.30pm and counted
10 Aircraft flying overhead proving that
the amount of aircraft is on the increase.
Several years ago I was a Parish
Councillor and managed to get a monitor
in the village when strangely enough,
aircraft disappeared.!!! When I
challenged this, I was told by one of
County Councillors that the wind had
changed!!! So the problem disappeared

New research finds that
Scouts & Guides have
better mental health
A new study has found a strong link
between participating in Scouting and
Guiding as a young person, and having
significantly better mental health.
The data, from almost 10,000
individuals, came from the National
Child Development Study a lifelong UK
-wide study of people born in November
1958. 28% had been members of
Scouting or Guiding as young people.
The major finding of the study was that,
at the age of 50, this group were around
15% less likely to suffer from mood
disorders (including depression and
anxiety) than adults who had not been
members of Scouting or Guiding.
Despite it having been many decades
since the participants had been
members, there was a clear and strong
mental health protective effect. This was
present even when the researchers
accounted for childhood risk factors,
including mental illness being generally
more prevalent in families from low
socio-economic backgrounds.
‘It is quite startling that this benefit is
found in people so many years after they
have attended Scouts or Guides,’ said
lead researcher Professor Chris Dibben.
‘We expect the same principles would
apply to the Scouts and Guides of today,
and so, given the high costs of mental ill
health to individuals and society, a focus
on voluntary youth programmes such as
Scouting or Guiding might be very
sensible,’ he continued.
The authors suggest that the findings
represent the benefits of learning ‘soft’
skills through Scouting and Guiding,
including teamwork and self-reliance,
coupled with frequently being outdoors
in natural environments. Scouting and
Guiding teaches young people skills for
life, and now there is evidence that these
skills can have a lifelong positive
impact on one of the most important
indicators of our health and wellbeing.
The study was conducted by researchers
at the universities of Edinburgh and
Glasgow, and has been published in
the Journal of Epidemiology and
Community Health.

Friends of St Mary’s,
Braughing (FOSM)
We recently held two very successful
events. The exciting WW1 drama,
‘Seeing it Through’, held in conjunction
with Braughing Local History Society,
drew an audience of over 100 into the
church and raised £750. ‘Apple Teas’
was exceptionally busy and the teas
alone raised over £320. Selling our own
locally produced Apple Juice, Smoked
Cheddar Cheese, Chutney, Apple Sauce
and Christmas Cards added further to
the day’s takings. We are also very
grateful to Jill Cook who kindly donated
half the profit from the recent Jazz
Night in memory of David Williamson.
The Trustees of the St Mary’s Church
Braughing Restoration Trust would like
to thank the FOSM Fundraising Team,
Braughing Local History Society and

work in making the drama, the teas and

of the volunteers!) makes it prudent to
seek professional help. We expect to
complete the tree work this winter.
Hedges
Some years ago the Friends planted a
mixed hedge along the boundary
between the almshouse meadow and the
almshouses. It has grown faster than we
have been able to trim it and has now
reached the point where it badly needs
laying. We hope to do this ourselves but
with some professional guidance.
Levelling
The flat upper part of the almshouse
meadow (where all new graves are sited)
is full - or almost so – and the next level
needs to be prepared. This will require
work with a digger, removal of weeds
and re-sowing with grass. The
mechanical work will necessitate some
external help – we have a benevolent
‘outsider’ in mind but the Friends can
probably undertake the rest themselves.
Wall
Clearance of undergrowth and ivy by the
Friends has revealed that the wall next to
Standon House, is in need of attention.
The wall itself is of flint topped with
brickwork and the work will involve
skills beyond those of the volunteers.
The Common Interest
This article is not intended as a plea for
funds – far from it. Nor is it in any direct
sense a call for more volunteers –
although in recent months a small
number of family members of those who
have recently been buried in the
Churchyard have become active in its
maintenance - and not just in their
family’s grave. Rather, it is intended to
emphasise that those who tend graves
and the volunteers who do their best to
look after the Churchyard have a
common interest. In part it can be
expressed in blunt terms: ‘You can
expect us to improve and beautify the
whole Churchyard and, in return, we can
expect you who tend graves to do so in a
way which respects the sanctity of the
ground and complies with the
Regulations.’ But it’s more than that.
All of us, whatever our standpoint, can
surely agree that the churchyard should
be ‘a place of dignity and calm, suitable
for peaceful contemplation, full of

natural flowers and filled with birdsong,
in harmony with its natural
surroundings, emphasising the presence
of life alongside death.’ We, for our part,
have been much encouraged by the
subtle but significant changes to many of
the graves which are bringing the
churchyard steadily into greater
compliance with the requirements of the
Diocesan Regulations.

Ralph Sadleir has embedded this theory

The first term is always a hub of activity
with every year group busy with one
thing or another. Whilst Year 5 were
busy settling in and doing tests to assess
ability and knowledge in core subjects,
Year 6 were only back for a couple of
weeks before hopping on a coach for
their week long residential trip. We hope
their parents enjoyed the peace and quiet
because once the pupils return, although
very tired, they had loads of stories to
tell about activities they have taken part
in, fears or worries they overcame, and
new friends they made.
Our Year 8’s also started another type of
journey – their Business Enterprise
project. This project lasts throughout the

Week. We welcomed guest speakers
from charity “Learn to Earn” who gave a
day long workshop to our pupils,
teaching them skills on how to budget,
what they need to earn against what they
can then afford to buy and interview
skills. The guest speakers did not end
there as on Tuesday Scott Saunders, who
was a contestant on BBC’s The
Apprentice in 2015, encouraged the
pupils to be brave in their ideas, be
ambitious and hard working. This years’
businesses range from selling cakes,
brownies and cookies, to washing cars,
to running lunchtime gaming sessions.
So far, business is good!
Not to be left out, Year 7 pupils have
enjoyed a workshop from our regular
expert on Shakespeare, Anthony Glenn.
His one man show helped support and
engage pupils’ understanding of The
Tempest and as proven historically, he
always has success with getting all
pupils involved. Our annual STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) day took place in October.
Year 7 pupils interviewed engineers,
programmed a robot to follow a route
and made stable, strong structures out of
cocktail sticks and jellybeans.
Well, it doesn’t seem that long ago that
we were all basking in the heat of a
lovely hot summer. Now the darker
evenings are with us and gloves and
scarves are being dug out from storage

Caution - Deer Crossing
Hertfordshire County Council is
asking drivers to be extra vigilant on
the roads this autumn.
At this time of year the male fallow deer
is unpredictable and can travel several
miles a day in search of a mate, crossing
roads in the process. The most common
time for the male deer to roam is at dawn
and dusk, which in late September and
October coincides with the rush-hours.
Although deer are present in residential
areas it is where major roads pass near
wooded areas, with traffic moving at
high speeds, that there is a particular risk
of collisions with crossing animals.
Some basic safety tips which might
help you to avoid collisions with
deer:
 Reduce your speed in high risk areas
such as wooded areas close to major
roads.
 Use your headlights on full beam,
when safe to do so.
 Be aware that more deer may cross
after the first one you see.
 Brake firmly when you notice a deer in
or near your path. Don't over-swerve
to avoid hitting it as you may cause a
more serious collision.

true a lot of scientific work is undertaken
in a laboratory environment, teaching
science in the early years can be done
anywhere. Finding the magic in
everyday items, using kitchen chemistry,

classes, you could set up multiple
rainbow containers, promoting
teamwork and a little healthy
competition. You could time the
children to see how quickly they can
complete the task and maybe even give
out a sticker (or 3!).
4. Science is boring
Is finding out about new things, how
things work and why things occur
boring? No, so let’s re-think. It’s the
way science has been taught in the past

Would you have found it boring if
you’d played games, made things glow,
made things pop, fizz and bang? All are
achievable in an early years settings – it
just takes a bit of creative thinking.

a length of ribbon (about 2m should do
it) – 1 for each colour of the rainbow.

in 2 parallel lines facing one another.
Give each pair a different piece of
coloured ribbon – making sure you
follow the correct order of the spectrum
- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue &
Violet (again, don’t worry about
indigo!). Now, white light is a mixture
of all the colours of the rainbow and
light is a wave. All the colours travel at
different speeds, that’s how we can split
them into the visible spectrum. Red is
the slowest wave, so get the reds to set
the wave speed by moving the ribbon
up & down to create a slow wave. Then
get the Oranges to move their ribbon –
a little quicker, then the yellows –
quicker still (you get the idea!). Until
we get to violet – the quickest wave.
