HARVEST TIME IN CAMBRIA CIRCA 1905
2ND ANNUAL
SCARECROW &
HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Scarecrow Festival
will be kicked off with a two
day Harvest Festival on October 9 and 10 at the Cambria Historical Museum.
There will be live entertainment, food, children’s crafts
and games, vendors, crafters,
scarecrows and much, much
more. And, best of all, proceeds from this event will
benefit the museum’s exhibits and education program.
While this is a FUNDraiser for the Cambria Historical Society, we also want
to make it a FUNraiser for
the entire community. So,
mark your calendars now so
you don’t miss your chance
to see amazing scarecrows
all over town and enjoy and
weekend full of old fashioned fun at the Cambria
Historical Museum!

the harvest on the ranch of their father, Ritner Dodson.
Ritner Dodson was born in Pennsylvania and came to California
in 1857. After spending time in Sacramento, he moved to Cambria
in 1868, purchased a ranch on Santa Rosa Creek and immediately
wrote to his betrothed, Lavina Shannon Morris, and told her of the
beautiful place he had purchased. She came to California alone, via
Panama and they were married in 1868.
According to Delmar Williams in Chronicles of the Cambria Pioneers (published in 1946):
“We notice in a Cambria paper called the Cambria-Cayucos Interests
in 1897, is an item that indicates Mr. Dodson was raising some excellent fruit. The item says he brought a basket Ralph and Mae help dad
of peaches of remarkable size.”

Mr. Dodson was said to have been
hard working and philosophical. He
once wrote to a friend:
“Count that day lost
Whose low descending sun
Sees at thy hand
No worthy action done.”

HOSPITALITY
NIGHT
Alexander Paterson, (pictured above with his
family) was born in Scotland and came to the
United States in his early twenties. He and a
friend from home, George Allen, became very interested in Horace Greeley’s “Go West Young
Man”. They were so enthralled that they wrote to
Horace Greeley to ask if this was really the thing
to do. Greeley answered the letter in long hand
but neither George or Alexander could read his
handwriting. In the end, they finally figured that
Mr. Greeley was telling them that WAS what they
should do, so they headed west.
~ According to Isabelle Paterson Wineman, Alexander’s daughter in Chronicles of the Cambria
Pioneers.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU
TO A VERY SPECIAL PERSON
“I first met Jane Sumpter at the Presbyterian Church Craft
Circle. In talking abut the work my husband and I do for the
Cambria Historical Society, Jane realized the importance of
preserving the Guthrie-Bianchini House and, in 2007, made
a generous donation to complete the well and irrigation system in honor of her late husband. Jane passed away in October 2009. In her will she left a portion of her estate to the
Historical Society to be used as needed. We are very grateful for her interest and support of the Historical Society.

IN THE NEWS
CAMBRIA: Seeing in the TRIBUNE in the interest of education frequently, I would like to
add a few lines from this place. Though out in
the hills far from the maddening crowd, we
are building a good educational system. Cambria was the first to have a high school in this
county. The school has done excellent work.
The class of '95 consisted of six young ladies,
Miss Bertie Dodson, Miss Gertrude Trace,
Alicia Campbell, Juliett Williams, Bertha Wittenberg and Lulu Phillips. Three of these
young ladies are at the various normal schools
in California, three are teachers doing excellent work. The class of '96 consisted of four.
Three of the number, George Lull, Miss Ella
Lynn and Earl Van Gorden are students at
Stanford. The fourth, Miss Lena Leffingwell,
will enter the Berkeley University in December, illness having prevented her entering
sooner. We are proud of our young teachers
and schools. Though but a one horse town,
we'll get there just the same.
