GREETINGS FROM THE PSAHPERD PRESIDENT
(Picture: Carl Keifer)
Welcome to the 94th Annual PSAHPERD convention at historic Valley Forge. I join Presidentelect Melanie Lynch, Past-President Cindy Allen, Executive Director Linda Woods Huber, all of the
Vice Presidents, and the rest of the Executive Board in welcoming you to this year’s convention.
The theme of the convention; “All for One, And One for All” connects All of the various areas of
Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and brings them together under One name,
PSAHPERD. I would like to thank all of the Vice-Presidents, committee chairs, and the local planning
committee who have worked so hard to bring us a great convention. This convention includes great
sessions, meetings, various socials, awards, a fantastic dance gala, networking with other professionals,
and your personal enjoyment. Please take some time out of your busy stay and visit the many vendors
in Exhibit Hall, you’ll be glad you did. While you are visiting the vendors don’t forget to thank them
for coming and helping to make this a memorable convention for ALL who attended.
This program will help you navigate around the property, the various session rooms, restaurants, and
all of the fantastic amenities this facility has to offer. Make sure you attend the General Session to
hear the keynote speaker, Rene Bidaud from Ropeworks, and celebrate with your colleagues as they
receive their awards for excellence in teaching. Saturday’s Cottrell Banquet will cap off a perfect
convention, you won’t want to miss this one. Have a wonderful time, take every opportunity to
network with all the professionals, attend the excellent programs, visit the exhibits, catch up with old
friends, and make some new ones as well.
The Convention Planning Teams, Executive Board, and myself are so appreciative of your support,
professionalism, and enthusiasm. As a result of your attendance, you will hopefully return to school
on Monday ready to face the rest of the year with new ideas you attained here at this year’s convention.
Thanks for attending,
Carl Keifer
President, 2015

GREETINGS FROM THE SHAPE AMERICA
Stephen Jefferies (picture)
Dear Attendees:
Thank you so much for inviting me to join you at the PSAHPERD Convention here at the Valley Forge
Casino Resort! It is my pleasure to be here with you. As President of SHAPE America, I have the
privilege of traveling across the country to hear first-hand what is on the minds of health and physical
education teachers. I am constantly impressed with your commitment and determination to empower
your students with the skills, knowledge and desire to enjoy healthy, meaningful physically activity for
a lifetime. It is this nation-wide vision that SHAPE America is expressing through its commitment to
“50 Million Strong by 2029.”
I look forward to meeting all of you and getting your opinions about the current state of the profession
and how SHAPE America can assist you in your daily work. There is so much that our national and
state professional associations can achieve through working together.
You are absolutely critical to the health of today’s 50 million school-age students. I look forward to
hearing your ideas for getting your school, school district and state involved in reaching our 50 Million
Strong goal.
Have a wonderful convention! Please come up and introduce yourself!
Best Regards,
Steve Jefferies
SHAPE America President 2015-2016
GREETINGS FROM SHAPE AMERICA -EASTERN DISTRICT
Ellen Benham-picture
Dear PSAHPERD Members,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Annual PSAHPERD Conference in Valley Forge on
behalf of the Eastern District. With each conference that is planned, the committee works hard to
bring you exciting, innovative and interactive sessions that broaden your knowledge base about what a
quality physical education program should look like. This year is no exception. Be prepared to be
amazed. Don’t sit back and just listen to the presenters, but get up and participate! As Physical
Educators we love to move and we learn by moving. So be an active attendee.
While you are here, learn more about how you can become member of your State Association. We all
have special gifts that we should share with our colleagues. Be a presenter, be a presider, join a
committee. Whatever it is, get involved at the next level. You will find it very rewarding, it will grow
your network and help you become a better professional.
Advocate for our profession with your colleagues in your schools. Show them how a quality physical
education and health education program helps students to develop and learn better in their classes. We
should all be working together to educate the Whole Child and PE and Health should be the
foundation. Don’t just sit in your room, get out there and be a part of what is going on in your schools.
Then take the lead.
We are at a critical time for our professions to get the recognition we deserve. Many legislators are
looking at why we are asking to be listed as a core subject. So tell them, show them why. We all need
to work together to advocate for the recognition we deserve.
Enjoy the conference. Collect as many ideas as you can, even if they seem far-fetched or impossible to
do in your school. The sky is the limit. The only thing holding you back, is you. So go for it!
Be Well,
Ellen Benham

ETHEL G. ENCKE SERVICE AWARD
Picture: Kimberley Razzano
Dr. Kimberley A. Razzano is an Associate Professor and Department Chair for the Department of
Health Studies at East Stroudsburg University, where she has initiated her career in higher education in
2003. She received her B.S. from Springfield College in School Health Education, her Masters of
Public Health from East Stroudsburg University, and her PhD in Human Development/Health
Promotion from Marywood University. Her previous teaching experience was at the middle and high
school level in health education with a focus in curriculum development until she joined the faculty at
ESU full time. Her responsibilities include serving as department chair, teaching graduate and
undergraduate courses in pedagogy in Health Education and public health, supervising student
teachers, the development of a new Masters in Health Education online graduate program, and service
to the university. She also created the Health component of the Professional Development School
along with her colleagues, and oversees the school health program. Dr. Razzano was named
PSAHPERD’s 1998 K-12 Health Education Teacher of the Year, 2007 Teacher of the Year in Health
at the University level. She was also recognized as AAHPERD Eastern District’s Outstanding
Professional for 1999, in 2009 received PSAHPERD’s Professional Honor Award and in 2010 she
received Outstanding Professor in Health from Eastern District of SHAPE America. She has served on
the Executive board since 1993as the hospitality chair, research chair, Vice-President for Health in
2000 and 2009, sponsorship chair and then president in 2012. Dr. Razzano has spent a lot her time
traveling to schools in Pennsylvania assisting schools in writing standard based units of instruction in
health education as well as program assessment and rubric development and in sexuality education
where she has done most of her research. She has presented over 75 presentations at the state, regional
and national level. Service is a passion of Kim’s but likes to do things at a grandiose level. Her most
memorable area of service was during her presidential year for PSAHPERD in 2012. The Capital to
Capitol ONE Ride which was a 153 mile cycle trip from Harrisburg PA to our nation’s Capital. The
goal of this project was to raise awareness and money toward the prevention of childhood obesity and
increased physical activity among the k-12 population. The project was so successful that it was again
implemented in 2013. Between both rides, over 100 people were involved as riders, support staff, and
volunteers. This project was a huge commitment for all involved as it challenged, your body, mind and
spirit. Between both rides over 10,000 dollars was raised and is now being used for schools and
community agencies to apply for grants to implement physical activity and healthy eating programs
toward obesity prevention. This could never have been obtained without all the support from those
involved especially Linda Huber and project director Kelly Boyd. In addition, Kim’s other passion in
service is cancer research and animal rescues. This service is combined in her volunteerism at an
annual “Fun Dog Show” where she has been described as the goofy outspoken, yet entertaining
Emcee. This annual event now in its 11th year is a day to celebrate all dogs and raise money toward
cancer prevention.
PSAHPERD is proud to award, Dr. Kimberley Razzano with the Ethel G. Encke Service Award.

LEGISLATIVE AWARD
Picture: Representative Tim Briggs
Representative Tim Briggs is the 2015 recipient of the Pennsylvania State Association For Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Legislative Honor Award.
Representative Briggs is a 1992 graduate of West Chester University where he earned a Bachelor

Representative Briggs was selected for the Legislative Honor Award for introducing legislation
addressing issues in health, physical education and athletics. In 2011, he introduced House Bill 1795
which contained many points supporting quality health education and physical education. The bill also

Representative Briggs did not give up. Early in 2015, he reintroduced the bill as House Bill 885, the
Healthy Kids Healthy Futures Act, which is currently in the House Education Committee.
Representative Briggs is also the author of the Safety in Youth Sports Act, which was signed into law

Interscholastic Athletics Disclosure law which strengthens the reporting requirements for high schools,
junior highs and middle schools to ensure they are in compliance with Title IX regulations.

who can use his expertise in fitness and nutrition to help not only his students and their families but also his
colleagues.
One of Nichols’ initiatives is called “Kids of Steel.” Over the past three years more than 300 Deer Lakes
students have participated in the before school program which encourages them to be more physically active
during school and as an extra-curricular activity as well. As a reward for all of their hard work, students are
then invited to run the final mile of the program as part of the annual Kids Pittsburgh Marathon. Nichols also
hosts an annual “Get Moving Night” for his students and their families. That program focuses on the fun of
fitness and it teaches them healthy activities they can do at home.
Nichols said he was humbled by the news of this award and believes that his holistic approach to wellness is a
major part of his success. “I teach a different kind of physical education to my students than maybe their
parents and grandparents received,” said Nichols. “I concentrate on teaching my students not only the physical
skills they’ll need to succeed but I also spend a lot of time educating them on why they are learning various
skills and how they can use those tools and that information to be healthy and active for the rest of their lives.”
Nichols is quick to point out that he is far from alone in his approach. “There are an awful lot of Health and
Physical Education professionals throughout the state who are just as dedicated as I am and who share my
passion with regard to student wellness,” said Nichols. “However, for whatever reason they were not nominated
for this year’s award. I think of this recognition as an acknowledgement of the great work all of those men and
women are doing every single day and the difference they are making in their students’ lives.”
Nichols lives in Bakerstown, PA with his wife Amy, son Ryland and daughter Addilyn
Congratulations, Ron Nichols PSAHPERD’s 2015 Elementary Teacher of the Year.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Secondary: Julie Groft
Picture
Mrs. Julie Groft is currently in her 25th year as a Health & Physical Education Teacher. The past 23
years have been at Garden Spot High School in the Eastern Lancaster County School District.
During her PE career, she has created many exciting learning opportunities for her students. One year
she trained a tenth grade class to run a 5K for the Arthritis Foundation and then they participated in the
race together on a snowy, wet day. She has started faculty Fridays at her school with the Competitive
Lifetime Physical Activities PE class (11th and 12th grade students) where teachers who have a prep
can participate in the physical activities with the students. She helps organize a fitness day for the
students where a variety of instructors come in and students sign up for the activity they want to do.
Fifteen years ago, she started an Anatomy & Physiology course at GSHS. This has become a popular
class for those students interested in a medical career. The course requires rigor of study and prepares
students for college courses in the same subject field. She has a wall in her classroom that reads
“Where are they now?” and it has former anatomy students and where they are in the medical field.
Students often email her to thank her for the dedication she has to the teaching field.
In addition to her classes, Mrs. Groft does many other school climate and culture activities. She runs an
assembly called “Challenge of the Classes” for all of the high school. This event has grown and
become a tradition at GSHS and part of homecoming week. She has been in charge of the Elanco
Coordinated School Health Council for the past 15 years. In this position she has organized events for
the district and surrounding community such as Mini Relays, Paint/Zombie Races, Got Milk Programs,
Duathlon, Family Game Night, Family Movie Night and many more. Three years ago she became the
wellness director for the staff of the Elanco school district. She creates monthly challenges for the
staff members each year. She has also been involved with the health risk assessments for every staff
member.
In the area of professional development and leadership, she presents at in-service days at her school
and most recently organized a wellness in-service for the entire district. She has been very active in
presenting workshops at local and state levels. For these efforts, she received the Lancaster – Lebanon
High School PE Teacher of the year in 2012.

HERitage AWARD
Gail Carroll Picture:
Gail Carroll graduated cum laude from Slippery Rock University in 1978. Gail played field hockey for
former U.S. Field Hockey team member, Pat Zimmerman. During the 1976 season, the team achieved
its first ten win season. Encouraged by her field hockey teammates, Gail learned to play lacrosse. She
played on Slippery Rock's first varsity lacrosse team, earning All South Honors in the post season
tournament. In 1978, Gail was hired by the Spring Grove Area School District to teach Health and
Physical Education to grades 6 and 7. Having a passion for sports, Gail made time in her busy teaching
schedule to support athletics by coaching, officiating, keeping the scorebook, helping with physical
screenings, selling tickets, and helping out with whatever else was needed. Described by her
colleagues as quiet, hard working, creative, self-motivated, and an organizer, Gail was at her best
doing the things that often go unnoticed. For ten years, Gail officiated Field Hockey at the High
School and College level. As an Assistant High School Basketball coach for two years, she saw her JV
squad go on to win the York County Championship their senior year. For twelve seasons, Gail was the
Assistant High School Volleyball Coach. Her teams compiled a record of 157 wins and 20 losses.
From 1986-1990, the team won 66 straight games. Gail would be quick to add, at the JV level, it is
never about winning, it's about developing fundamental skills. Her strategy was simple- work hard,
play hard, and have fun. Since the JV team played a best of three game match, the strongest players
were in the first game, the developing players were in the second game, and then, if necessary, the
strongest team played a third game. A third game always placed pressure on the most talented JV
players, but they handled the challenge and grew confident. Spring Grove High did not have
rebuilding years, the team just reloaded with new faces. Head Coach and eventual PA State Volleyball
Coaches Hall of Fame Member, Mary Jane Snyder was always appreciative of Gail's help. Along with
coaching the JV team, Gail scouted Varsity opponents, provided essential data to Mary Jane during
varsity games, helped out with tournaments, and countless other things . While Gail was an Assistant
Coach, the Varsity Volleyball teams won six York County Titles, four District 3 Titles, and placed
second in the State Tournament. Gail spent one year as an Assistant High School Field Hockey Coach
and her team went undefeated. The following year, Gail took over the Head Coaching job, won the
York County Division 2 Title, and Coach of the Year Honors. Gail spent ten seasons being the Head
High School Field Hockey Coach. As she volunteered her time, she and other coaches, were able to
start Junior High Girls Volleyball and Field Hockey teams at Spring Grove. Besides coaching at
Spring Grove, Gail coached for the USFH Future's program. In 1999 and 2000, Gail coached the U16
Philadelphia team to fourth place finishes in the United States Futures National Tournament. Looking
back at her coaching career, Gail most enjoyed her time as an Assistant Coach. The position drew
little attention, but the personal rewards of watching players go on to have success at the Varsity and
later College level were priceless.
PSAHPERD is proud to recognize Gail Carroll as a 2015 HERitage Award winner.
HERitage Award
Yonnie Kauffman (Picture)
PSAHPERD is pleased to present Yonnie Kauffman with the HERitage Award. When Yonnie was in
6th grade she met a high school senior who taught her how to play tennis. The senior told her she was
going to school to be a physical education teacher. From then on her mind was made up; she too, wanted
to be a physical education teacher. While she was too young to know about coaching or physical
education, she never changed her decision. By competing on teams in high school her professional path
became clear. Her love for sports and physical education had increased through the influence of her
coaches and her physical education teachers. Yonnie has paved a path throughout her career that most
people could only dream about, but her dream for some was a reality.
She has a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Bridgewater College and a Masters Degree from West
Chester University. During her senior year in college someone from Elizabethtown called her to inform
her about a position available in Physical Education, in which she applied for the opening and has been
there ever since. Yonnie has been a professor of Physical Education at Elizabethtown College for over 20
years, in which she has coached Women’s Field Hockey, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Tennis, and was
the Associate Athletic Director. She has earned multiple honors in all fields that she has been a part of.
Throughout her career coaching Field Hockey, she has earned 3 Middle Atlantic Conference
Championships, 2 Penn Mar Conference Championships and appeared in 8 NCAA Tournaments. It was
not only that she achieved great success in coaching field hockey, but that same greatness continued to
follow her while coaching Women’s Basketball and Women’s Tennis at Elizabethtown College. During
her time coaching Women’s Basketball, she was able to win 2 NCAA National Championships in the
1980’s while at the same time her team appeared in 12 NCAA Tournaments under her lead. Yonnie’s
accomplishments lead her to 4 undefeated seasons as the Women’s Tennis Coach while also becoming the
MAC Runner –up and having a Regional Championship Team. There were multiple student-athletes she
coached that became All-Americans in all three sports under her time as head coach.
The one thing that has led to her success has been the dedicated assistant coaches and athletes she had
throughout the years. With that success came various awards, which include being inducted into the
Bridgewater College, Manheim Central, Elizabethtown College, Lancaster County Tennis, Middle
Atlantic Conference, and Susquehanna Valley Pennsylvania Chapter Hall of Fame. She also earned the
WBCA Regional Basketball Coach of the year, 5 MAC Conference Coach of the year awards in
Basketball, and 3 MAC Conference Coach of the year awards in Field Hockey. She has displayed great
success throughout her career that Elizabethtown College named the basketball court “Kauffman Court”.
The dedication and passion she has will continue to show us what a great mentor, teacher, and coach she
has been throughout her career.
One of her favorite quotes to her students and athletes was, “Don’t look back and say, I wish I had; always
look back and say, I’m glad I did!”’ Yonnie can honestly look back on her life and say, I’m glad I did!
PSAHPERD is proud to recognize Yonnie Kauffman as a 2015 HERitage Award winner.
Heritage Award
Lucille Snavely (Picture)
PSAHPERD is pleased to present Lucille Snavely with the HERitage Award. She started her career by
earning a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education from West Chester State Teachers College.
Lucille has taught at Conestoga Valley Junior High School, Linden Hall School for Girls, and
Warwick Middle school for over 20 years in the teaching and coaching profession. She has a passion
for umpiring, which she has successfully done through the PIAA for Field Hockey for 38 years at the
high school and junior high levels. She has umpired League County and PIAA State Field Hockey
games and championships. Lucille not only had a passion for umpiring at the high school levels, but at
the collegiate level as well. Her passion carried her umpiring career to the collegiate level where she
officiated post-season conferences, regional, and championship games for the NCAA Division I, II,
and III levels. With excellent ratings during her umpiring career, she was able to umpire the USFHA
Olympic Team Exhibition Game in 1984. During her time as an educator, she also displayed her
passion for coaching in which she coached a wide variety of sports. Lucille managed to be involved
with multiple sports including hockey, basketball, and cheerleading as she demonstrated her passion
for coaching.
Lucille has earned multiple achievements, which she has been recognized for over the past several
years. Some of these honors include the USFHA National Umpiring Rating in 1981, USFHA National
Emeritus Umpiring Rating in 1996, the 2005 USFHA Betty Shellenberger Service Award, and was
inducted into the 2013 Lancaster-Lebanon League Hall of Fame. Throughout her career as a teacher,
she has taught adult education classes, pickle ball at local recreation centers for beginners, and has
been the Sports commentator for Blue Ridge Cable Sports.
Lucille has enjoyed every opportunity presented to her throughout her professional career with the kids
and colleagues in education and athletics. Today, she still enjoys following sports and especially
watching her grandchildren play a variety of sports. She still has a passion for keeping herself active by
playing pickle ball at the recreation center in her area, but most of all she enjoys spending time with
her family.
PSAHPERD is proud to recognize Lucille Snavely as a 2015 HERitage Award winner.
HEART AWARD
Collegium Charter School (2 Pictures)
PSAHPERD and the American Heart Association are proud to present the 2015 Heart Award to the
Collegium Charter School. The school is located in Exton, Pennsylvania and has been involved with
Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart since 2003, raising over $219,000. AHA Youth Market Director
Colleen Csenteri stated, “ Each year the team implements new and creative ideas which keeps their
event fun, educational, and successful year after year. Collegium Charter has set the bar and is the Top
fundraising school in Chester County.” Last year they raised an amazing $50,000!
All the elementary students K-6 at the Collegium Charter School participate in a Hoops or Jump event.
Coordinating the Jump Rope for Heart event are Jamie Batty, Devyn Davis and Coleen McNamara.
Tom Schultz and Allison Winters are in charge of the Hoops for Heart event at the school. They have
demonstrated their commitment to educating their students on a healthy lifestyle as well as their
dedication to raising funds for the American Heart Association while instilling a commitment to
community service.
According to Coleen McNamara, the key to success for Collegium Charter School has been a
supportive administration, faculty, and staff. The administration allows the program to be a school
wide event with each elementary homeroom coming to the gym for a 40 minute block of heart healthy
activities. This is followed by the annual whipped cream “pie-ing” of teachers, administrators, and
staff by top fundraisers or students with spirit. Rather than wearing a uniform, the students get to dress
down and wear red for the day. A JRFH committee made up of teachers and staff helps with posters,
announcements, and parent letters.
Congratulations Collegium Charter School, recipient of the 2015 PSAHPERD Heart Award.

featured performer for the renowned Cirque du Soleil; appeared on television, in feature films,
and on thousands of stages; is a commentator for ESPN; and, created her own business with a
mission of youth motivation and fitness.
