PRESIDENT DR. DIANNE BOARDLEY SUBER
Dianne Boardley Suber, 10th President of
Saint Augustine’s College, assumed the
presidency of the College on December 1,
1999. Under her presidency, the College
has experienced increased enrollment,
reinstituted the football program, fielded a
marching band, expanded the adult
learners program, established innovative
degree granting programs to include
Biomedical and Scientific Communication,
Criminal Justice Forensic Science and the Center for Real
Estate Development and Property Management and
reinstated the dual degree program in Engineering with North
Carolina State University.
The first female to lead the institution, Dr. Suber is an
experienced educator and administrator with 30 years of
teaching, consulting and administrative experience in
preschool and higher education. She has served as a
classroom teacher; elementary and middle school principal,
university professor and consultant to several national
educational organizations. Prior to assuming the helm at Saint
Augustine’s College, Dr. Suber held administrative positions
of increasing responsibility at Hampton University in
Hampton, Virginia, including: vice president for administrative
services; assistant provost for academic affairs; assistant
provost; dean of administrative services; and adjunct
professor of Education in the Graduate College. Dr. Suber
received a bachelor of science degree in early childhood
education from Hampton (Institute) University, a master’s of
education degree in curriculum development from the
University of Illinois-Urbana and a doctorate of education
degree in educational administration from Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.
County Grants Committee; the Consortium of Doctors, LTD;
the Southeast Raleigh Improvement Assembly; the Blue
Ribbon Committee on the Future of Wake County; the Rotary
Club. A member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Dr. Suber
previously served on the former President’s Board of Advisors
to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges
and Universities; and the American Council on Education
(ACE) as a Commissioner.
Dr. Suber was featured in the October 2005 issue of Essence
Magazine and in 2006, she was awarded The Willie E. Gary
“Making A Difference Award.” The 100 Black Men, Triangle
East Chapter, awarded Dr. Suber the Education Award at
their 2008 Gala “A Tribute to Women”, April 2008. In 2010,
Dr. Suber received the Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award
from the American Association of School Administrators
(AASA).
Dr. Suber has two daughters - Nichole Reshan Lewis and her
daughter Taylor Marie, who reside in Raleigh, North Carolina
and Raegan LaTrese Thomas, who also lives in Raleigh,
North Carolina with her husband, Farah and their children,
Nyjil Brevard Saint Thomas and Samantha Ari Dianne
Thomas.
Dr. Suber has recently been appointed to serve on the
Secretary of Education’s Historically Black Colleges and
Universities Capital Financing Advisory Board. She currently
serves as the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC) President.
President Suber also serves on the Board of Directors of the
Central Region of Wachovia Bank; the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA); the United Negro College Fund;
the National Association of Independent Colleges and
Universities (NAICU); the Business and Technology Center;
the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce; the Communities
In Schools of Wake County; and the Marbles Kids Museum.
Dr. Suber is also a member of the United Negro College
Fund’s Executive, Bylaws and Nominating Committees; the
Association of Episcopal Colleges (AEC); the North Carolina
Independent Colleges and Universities Executive and
Nominating Committees; The Women’s Network of Wake

George Williams has built a dynasty in
track and field and cross country at Saint
Augustine’s College. Since he began
coaching in 1976, his track and field
programs have won an astounding 31
national championships.
Williams has coached 32 Olympians,
including three gold medalists. He has
been the recipient of more than 100 track
and field coach of the year honors, including the 2010
Division II national outdoor men’s coach of the year award by
the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association.
The award is one of seven coaching honors for Williams in
2010. In 2011, Williams earned three awards - the CIAA
men’s indoor and outdoor coach of the year and the
USTFCCCA Atlantic Region men’s coach of the year.
Williams’ teams have consistently brought home NCAA track
and field championships and produced numerous world-class
athletes. Under his leadership, the Falcons have amassed
over 150 CIAA track and field and cross country conference
championships. Additionally, his scholarship student-athletes
have a 95 percent graduation rate.
Williams was the head coach of the 2004 Men’s Olympic
Track and Field Team in Athens, Greece, and he also served
as assistant coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Track and Field
Team in Atlanta, Ga., where each athlete he was responsible
for won a gold medal. He was the U.S. men’s head coach at
the 1999 World Outdoor Championships in Seville, Spain, the
1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto, Canada and
the 1992 IAAF World Cup in Havana, Cuba.
Williams coached Saint Augustine’s College graduate
Bershawn “Batman” Jackson to a bronze medal at the 2008
Beijing Olympics. Jackson is a four-time U.S. champion and
2005 world champion in the 400-meter hurdles. Four former
Falcon student-athletes including Jackson competed at the
Beijing Olympics.
In addition to being the track and field and cross country head
coach, Williams is also the college’s athletic director. A faithful
Falcon, Williams has served his alma mater (graduated 1965)
in a variety of roles since 1968 including director of alumni
affairs, admissions counselor, director of student activities
and head basketball coach. In 1976, Williams was named the
men’s and women’s track and field and cross country coach,
and he was named athletic director in 1997. In his one season

as men’s basketball coach, Williams led the Falcons to a
division title in 1998.
Before he became a coaching legend, Williams made his
name on the basketball court for the Falcons. One of the best
players to ever suit up in a Falcon uniform, Williams was an
All-CIAA standout during his career.
Williams is a member of six Halls of Fame: the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the North
Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Florida Track and Field Hall
of Fame, the Saint Augustine’s College Athletic Hall of Fame,
the Booker T. Washington High School (Miami, Fla.) Hall of
Fame, and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
In March 2009, Williams was selected an honoree in the
“Living Legends” Orange & Black Scholarship Gala Awards
Ceremony by the Booker T. Washington Alumni Association,
which honors outstanding alumni of Booker T. Washington
Senior High School. On June 20, 2008, Williams received the
Bighouse Gaines Unsung Hero Award from the WinstonSalem State University Alumni Association.
In November 2003, Williams arranged for Saint Augustine’s
College to become the first historically black college to host
the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. In
November 2010, Saint Augustine’s College hosted the
Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships.
After returning from the 2004 Summer Games, the city of
Elizabeth City, N.C., honored Williams in September 2004
with a key to the city. The city of Raleigh, N.C., honored the
longtime Saint Augustine’s College coach with a
Proclamation, naming November 16, 2004, as George
Williams Day for his outstanding contributions in track and
field. The Newark YMCA Sports Legends honored Williams in
November 2004, and the city of Miami, Fla., honored Coach
Williams with a Proclamation naming February 7, 2004, as
George Williams Day.
Additionally, Williams has received The Order of the Long
Leaf Pine award three times - from Governor Jim Martin,
Governor James Hunt in 1996 and Governor Michael Easley
in 2004. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award is the highest
civilian honor presented by the governor of North Carolina.
Coach Williams received this honor because of his career
achievements, and his extraordinary service to the state and
the community. Coach Williams is married to the former Olivia
Hardy, and they have one daughter Crystal, a son-in-law
Steve Harrell and twin granddaughters Haley and Grace.
HEAD COACH MICHAEL COSTA
Michael Costa enters his tenth season at
Saint Augustine’s College as one of the
most respected head coaches in the
CIAA. The 2003 and 2005 CIAA football
coach of the year, Costa is an energetic
leader who instills discipline and intensity
in his players.
Costa is the Falcons’ only head coach since the school
revived football in 2002. During his tenure at Saint
Augustine's College, Costa has produced four All-Americans
(Kevin Jones, Alex Hall, Marcus Kennedy, Walter Sanders)
and 31 All-CIAA players including 14 first-team selections.
Several former players have gone on to professional careers
including former standout Alex Hall, who currently plays for
the NFL’s New York Giants. Some have embarked on
coaching careers such as Tyrone Pettaway, who recently
joined the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an assistant
coach.
The Falcons have achieved many noteworthy
accomplishments during Costa’s reign. In 2010, the Falcons
were ranked as high as 19th nationally in the AFCA Division II
Coaches’ Top 25 poll with their nine wins setting a modern
school season record.
The Falcons capped the 2010 season by topping nationallyranked Fort Valley State 20-9 for the Pioneer Bowl title. It is
the first postseason and bowl win for the Falcons in recent
memory.
The victory over Fort Valley State was the second against a
nationally-ranked team during the 2010 season. The Falcons
stunned then-unbeaten Winston-Salem State 40-35 in
October which was part of a seven-game win streak. They
also defeated Catawba (20-17) of the highly-regarded South
Atlantic Conference in the season opener for the second time
in three years.
In 2005, the Falcons were the first CIAA team to earn a No. 1
ranking in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region. That same
year, the Falcons tied a school record with eight wins.
From 2005 to 2007, the defense was ranked in the top 10
nationally in total defense. In 2008, the Falcons ranked 13th in
the nation in total defense.
Under Costa’s guidance, the Falcons gained national
attention with wins over nationally-ranked Catawba 14-7 in
2008 and Mars Hill 13-6 in 2005. Both teams play in the
South Atlantic Conference.
During Costa’s reign, three student-athletes have won top
league individual honors. Walter Sanders was named CIAA
offensive player of the year in 2010. Tyrone Pettaway was the
league’s top defensive player in 2005 and Kevin Jones
earned the honor the following year.
Both Pettaway and Jones were linebackers, a position that
Costa specializes in teaching. During his coaching career,
Costa worked with linebackers in two NFL Minority Fellowship
Programs; the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins.
Costa developed a reputation as a tireless worker at
Wilmington (Del.) High School where he was as assistant
football and basketball coach. His first head football coaching
job was at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He coached
at Cheyney for five seasons from 1985 to 1990. After
Cheyney, Costa coached at Virginia Union University,
Hampton University, Elizabeth City State University and Miami
Central High School in various roles as an assistant before
coming to Saint Augustine's College.
Costa received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and
Physical Education from Norfolk State University. He
graduated with a Master’s of Education degree in Health and
Physical Education from West Chester State University of
Pennsylvania. Costa also holds a Master’s of Education
degree in Educational Administration from Cheyney University
of Pennsylvania. Costa and his wife, Cassondra, are the
proud parents of two children, Michael III and Alyse Nicole.

Tremayne Henry
Jermaine Gales
Co-Defensive Coordinator
Offensive Coordinator
Tremayne Henry starts his ninth season at
Saint Augustine's College including his fifth
year as co-defensive coordinator. Under
his guidance, the Falcons are consistently
ranked in the top 10 nationally in total defense.
Henry played a huge role in the development of current NFL
player Alex Hall, who was an All-American defensive end for the
Falcons in 2006 and 2007. Former defensive tackle Marcus
Kennedy, another Henry pupil, gained All-American honors in
2008 while at Saint Augustine's College. Henry, whose specialty
is the defensive line, has produced two All-Americans and six AllCIAA players.
Before joining the Falcon staff, Henry was an offensive line
coach at Elizabeth City State University and defensive line coach
at Statesville and North Iredell High Schools. In addition to
coaching, Henry spends time as a youth mentor.
As a player, Henry was a three-time college football letterman at
Mars Hill College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Political Science in 1994.
Jermaine Gales begins his second season
at Saint Augustine’s College as offensive
coordinator. Gales’ presence last season
impacted the offense, which averaged 28.3
points and 318.5 yards per game. Walter Sanders was named
CIAA offensive player of the year.
Before arriving at Saint Augustine’s College, Gales was the wide
receivers coach at Mars Hill College for four years. Prior to
coaching at Mars Hill, Gales was the wide receivers coach at
Southern Arkansas University. As a football player, Gales played
at Mt. San Antonio College where he was a two-time letterman.
Gale also lettered twice at Southern Arkansas where he helped
the Muleriders win the Gulf South Conference title in 1997.
Gales earned his bachelors degree in Biological Science at
Southern Arkansas in 2002. He also gained his Master’s of
Education degree in Kinesiology as a graduate assistant at SAU.
Gales is married to the former Kizzy Forrest.
Matthew Montgomery
Quarterbacks Coach
Willie Bennett
Co-Defensive Coordinator
Willie Bennett begins his sixth season at
Saint Augustine's College including his fifth
year as co-defensive coordinator.
Since coming to the Falcons, Bennett has been instrumental in
helping the defense attain its national reputation. Bennett also
coaches special teams, which rank among the top 30 in kickoff
and punt returns in 2010.
Bennett previously coached defensive backs and outside
linebackers at North Carolina A&T State University in 2005,
where the secondary ranked third in the MEAC and ninth
nationally. Five players were either first-team or second-team AllMEAC selections, and one player earned an NFL roster spot
during Bennett’s tenure at A&T. Bennett started his coaching
career at Alabama A&M where he coached defensive backs and
outside linebackers from 2002-2004. The A&M defense rose to
No. 1 in the SWAC and ranked among the top five defenses in
NCAA Division I-AA while Bennett was there.
Willie and his wife, Kiana, are the proud parents of two children:
Willie Jr. and Carilynn.
Matthew Montgomery begins his 10th
season as quarterbacks coach at Saint
Augustine's College.
At Saint Augustine's College, he developed quarterback Darrell
Nesbitt (2003-2005), who earned All-CIAA honors. In 2009,
Joaquin Green was named CIAA offensive rookie of the year
under Montgomery’s tutelage. In 2010, Teddy Bacote was
selected to the All-CIAA rookie team.
Before arriving at Saint Augustine's College, Montgomery was an
assistant coach at Hanna (S.C.) High School and Morris Brown
College, and he was a student assistant coach at Hampton
University. He was an elementary school teacher in Anderson,
S.C., while coaching at Hanna High School. Montgomery starred
at quarterback during his collegiate playing days, leading
Hampton University to three CIAA football titles (1992, 1993,
1994). Montgomery ranks sixth all-time in total offense and
seventh all-time in career passing in the CIAA.
Montgomery graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Physical Education in 1996. He earned a
Master of Arts degree in counseling at Clark Atlanta University.
Matthew and his wife, Mary, are the proud parents of two
daughters: Prudence Alyce and Debra Kay.

Kevin Dial
Wide Receivers Coach
Kevin Dial starts his sixth season as wide
receivers coach at Saint Augustine's
College. Dial has an extensive CIAA
background as a coach and player.
Dial has been an assistant coach at Virginia Union (2004-06),
Winston-Salem State (2003-04), North Carolina Central (200203) and Livingstone (1996-2002), which is his alma mater. Dial
was primarily the receivers and tight ends coach at his previous
jobs. He has developed eight All-CIAA players as a coach.
Dial was a stellar receiver at Livingstone, where he led the Blue
Bears in receptions, reception yards, touchdowns and yards per
catch during his playing days. He was a key player on two CIAA
championship teams.
Anthony Scott
Offensive Line Coach
Anthony Scott enters his fourth season as
offensive line coach at Saint Augustine's
College.
The offensive line has improved
tremendously under Scott, who played on two NCAA Division IAA national championship teams and four Southern Conference
championship teams at Georgia Southern University. The line
helped Walter Sanders become the CIAA offensive player of the
year in 2010. Lineman Justin Wells was a first-team All-CIAA
selection and lineman Jadarius Dean made the All-CIAA rookie
team in 2010. That same season, the Falcons were one of eight
CIAA teams to average over 300 total offensive yards. Scott has
coached three All-CIAA linemen in the last two seasons.
Before coming to Saint Augustine's College, Scott coached tight
ends at Lenoir-Rhyne University from January 2008 to June 2008
and the offensive line for three years at East Forsyth High
School, where he was also the head track and field coach and
the academic advisor for the football team. Scott earned a
Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting at Georgia Southern.
Demius Frazier
Linebackers Coach/
Video Coordinator
Demius Frazier enters his fifth season on
the Falcon coaching staff after a stellar
playing career at Saint Augustine's College. In 2006, Frazier was
part of a talented linebacking corps which played a key role on a
defense ranked No. 2 nationally.
The Opelika, Ala., native was the team’s sixth leading tackler that
year with 46 total tackles including 11 tackles for loss which tied
for third-best on the squad. He also collected one sack and one
pass interception. In 2005, Frazier was a second-team All-CIAA
selection after recording 33 total tackles including 12 tackles for
loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks. He also recovered a fumble and
forced one fumble.
William Frizzelle
Defensive Backs Coach
William Frizzelle is back for his 10th season
as an assistant coach.
A former North Carolina Central standout,
Frizzelle was a defensive back in the NFL for nine years. He
played for the Detroit Lions (1984-85), Philadelphia Eagles (1986
-1990, 1992-93) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1991). Frazier
collected 34 tackles in 2004 and 45 tackles in 2003.
Before turning pro, Frizzelle was an All-CIAA defensive back at
North Carolina Central from 1980-1983. He still ranks among the
school’s interception leaders with 10. A Greenville, N.C., native,
Frizzelle graduated from N.C. Central with a B.S. degree in
Political Science. Frizzelle relies on his NFL and college
experience to coach the Falcon secondary.

Jimmy Heggins is the offensive line coach
at Saint Augustine’s College working
primarily with tackles and tight ends.
Heggins helped the O-line play a vital role in the offense
averaging over 28 points and 300 yards in 2010, his first season
with the Falcons. Before coming to St. Aug, Heggins was the
offensive line coach at the University of Kentucky from 20052009. Heggins spent most of his coaching career at Florida State
University, where he stayed from 1986-2004. He was on the
coaching staff of two national championship teams at Florida
State.
Heggins has coached nine All-American offensive linemen and
18 offensive linemen who went the NFL.. He received his
bachelors degree in the College of Social Sciences at Florida
State in 1978. A Salisbury, N.C., native, Heggins was a high
school and college football standout.

SEASON OUTLOOK
Coming off a record-setting football season, Saint Augustine’s
College is shooting for even better results in 2011.
The Falcons bring back 40 lettermen from last year’s 9-2
squad which set a modern school season record for wins and
took home the Pioneer Bowl Trophy after thumping nationallyranked Fort Valley State 20-9. It is believed to be the first
postseason appearance and victory for the Falcons, who plan
to use the win as a springboard for another serious run at the
CIAA championship.
The Falcons were one victory away from the CIAA title game
last season. At one point, they won seven consecutive games
including a 40-35 win over then nationally-ranked and
unbeaten Winston-Salem State. Going into the regularseason finale against Shaw, the Falcons were 19th in the
AFCA Division II national rankings.
To build off last season’s success, the Falcons need repeat
performances from several top flight players. Three All-CIAA
players return including Tyron Laughinghouse (Jr./Greenville,
N.C.), Chaz Robinson (Soph./Hampton, Va.) and Anthony
Harris (Sr./Raleigh, N.C.).
Laughinghouse, a double threat at wide receiver and kick
returner, led the CIAA and ranked sixth in Division II in kickoff
return average (29.5 ypr) while leading the Falcons in
touchdown receptions (6). Robinson, a linebacker, led all
CIAA freshmen in tackles per game (8.2) and ranked sixth in
the league overall. In addition to being an All-CIAA selection,
Robinson also made the All-CIAA rookie team. Harris, a
defensive end, was fourth in the CIAA in sacks (6.5).
Laughinghouse is part of an offensive unit which averaged
28.3 points and 318.5 total offensive yards. The Falcons will
miss CIAA offensive player of the year Walter Sanders, who
ranked among the Division II leaders in rushing with 1,377
yards, and tight end Jone’ Harris, who was named Pioneer
Bowl MVP after catching two touchdown passes in the bowl
win.
The bulk of the offense is back, however, including Joaquin
Green (R-Jr./Pittsboro, N.C.), Teddy Bacote (R-Soph./
Hampton, Va.), Rowdy Batchelor (Sr./Jacksonville, N.C.),
Jamain Smith (Sr./Kenansville, N.C.) Rory Nixon (Jr./
Hampton, Va.) and Jadarius Dean (Soph./Milledgeville, Ga.).
Green threw for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns while
completing 50 percent of his passes.
Bacote was 3-0 as a starter when Green was injured and
finished the season with nine touchdown passes and one
interception. Bacote tossed two touchdown passes and Green
added one in the Pioneer Bowl victory. Batchelor was the lead
blocker at fullback for Sanders, while Nixon, a center, and
Dean, a guard, anchored the offensive line. Dean was named
to the All-CIAA rookie team. The steady Smith led the Falcons
last season with 39 receptions and 540 receiving yards.
Defensively, the Falcons are tough up front with Harris and
Joe Reed (Jr./Anderson, S.C.) at defensive end and Anthony
Coleman (Jr./Decatur, Ga.) in the interior. The Falcons expect
a breakout year from Reed, a talented player ranked eighth in
the CIAA in tackles for loss (13) last season.
The secondary is almost intact with the return of Dedrick Early
(Sr./Warner Robins, Ga.), Jamil Berry (Sr./Fayetteville, Ga.)
and Kevin Jones (R-Soph./Warner Robins, Ga.).
The Falcons should be dangerous on special teams. In
Laughinghouse and Newton Miller III (R-Soph./York, Pa.), the
Falcons have two of the most explosive returners in the CIAA
and the nation.
Miller, an All-CIAA rookie pick, ranked seventh in the CIAA in
kick return average (22.7 rpg) last season. He returned the
opening kickoff 83 yards against Saint Paul’s. Jermaine Jones
(Soph./Wilmington, N.C.), and Franklin James (R-Soph./
Hampton, Va.) are great coverage guys on kickoffs and punts,
and Jones is also a gifted receiver.
Alexander Tucker (Soph./Union, S.C.), another All-CIAA
rookie selection, set a modern school record with a 46-yard
field goal against Winston-Salem State. He later nailed a 42yarder to clinch the victory over WSSU.
If the Falcons avoid major injuries and big plays against them,
they can duplicate last year’s success and then some.

SAINT AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE 12 (Sept. 11)
SALISBURY, N.C. – For the second time in three years, Saint
Augustine’s College surprised Catawba College 20-17 in the
Indians’ home football opener at Shuford Stadium.
Two years ago, the Falcons topped the Indians 14-7 at
Shuford Stadium to snap the Indians’ 13-game win streak in
home openers. They became the first CIAA team to defeat
the Indians.
The Falcons won again this year behind two touchdown
passes by Joaquin Green (Redshirt Soph./Pittsboro, NC) and
a defense which held firm late. It all added up to a victory for
the Falcons in their season opener.
“Our guys didn’t quit,” Falcon Head Coach Michael Costa
said. “I see some fight in the guys. And we do have talent. We
got some guys that can make some big plays. The good thing
is they made the big plays at the right time.”
Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) clinched the big win with
a 23-yard scoring run on fourth down and inches. His
touchdown with 2:04 left sealed the win for the Falcons.
The Indians (0-1) scored on a late drive with 14 seconds left
to pull within three points. Charles McKenzie (Sr./Warner
Robins, GA) of the Falcons recovered the anticipated onside
kick and the Falcons ran out the clock.
Green, the 2009 CIAA offensive rookie of the year, was
efficient at quarterback. He completed 14 of 22 passes for
202 yards. He tossed touchdown passes to Jone’ Harris (Sr./
Fairfield, CA) and Jamain Smith (Jr./Kenansville, NC), whose
25-yard catch with 9:05 remaining in the fourth quarter gave
the Falcons a 14-10 lead which they kept for good.
Harris finished with five receptions for 87 yards including a 10
-yard touchdown grab. Sanders rushed 17 times for a teamhigh 60 yards.
Defensively, preseason All-CIAA linebacker Steven Stanback
(Sr./Temple Hills, MD) led the Falcons with 14 tackles.
Linebacker Mark Hall (Sr./Suitland, MD) added nine tackles
and Jamil Berry (Jr./Jonesboro, GA) had an interception.
The Indians opened the second half with a 43-yard field goal
by Thomas Trexler to extend their lead to 10-6. The Falcons
responded with an impressive drive which led to Green’s
touchdown pass to Smith.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Tailback Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore,
Md.) rushed for 125 yards on 27 carries and scored two
touchdowns for Saint Augustine’s College, but Mars Hill
College came away with a 41-12 non-conference victory at
Broughton High School Stadium.
The rushing yards were the most for Sanders since he gained
128 yards on 23 carries against Mars Hill in a 20-14 loss in
2009. Though the Lions (2-1 overall) failed to contain
Sanders, they overcame his rushing output by gaining 357
offensive yards and taking advantage of five Falcon
turnovers.
The Lions scored off one turnover – a five-yard fumble
recovery by Vernan Frett – to take a 34-0 lead early in the
third quarter. The Lions extended the lead to 41-0 before
Sanders put the Falcons (1-1 overall) on the scoreboard with
two short scoring runs in the fourth quarter.
Sanders was the main bright spot for the Falcons, but Tyron
Laughinghouse (Soph./Greenville, N.C.) gained 44 yards on
two kickoff returns and Newton Miller III (Redshirt Fr./York,
Pa.) gained 85 yards on four kickoff returns to excite the proFalcon crowd in the home opener. Linebacker Chaz Robinson
(Fr./Hampton, Va.) led the Falcons with eight tackles and
linebacker Steven Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) added six
tackles and a fumble recovery.
Jon Richt paced the Lions with five touchdown passes
including three to P.J. Gore, who caught four passes for 127
yards. Richt completed 11 of 19 passes for 220 yards.
Maurice Harris led the Lions with nine tackles.

WEST GROVE, Pa. - Saint Augustine's College is off to its
best start in five years after routing Lincoln (Pa.) University
52-21 Saturday at Avon Grove High School Stadium.
The win pushed the Falcons to 3-1 overall and stretched their
football winning streak to two games. Most importantly, they
are 2-0 in the CIAA Southern Division with an important division game against defending CIAA champion Fayetteville
State coming up Saturday (Oct. 2) on Homecoming Day at
Broughton High Stadium.
The Falcons haven't opened the season this fast since 2005,
when they were unbeaten after four games. They went on to
post an 8-2 mark that season, their best record since 2002.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Newton Miller III (Redshirt Fr./York, Pa.)
scored twice and Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) rushed
for 165 yards and a score to spark Saint Augustine’s College
to an easy 31-7 victory over Saint Paul’s College Saturday in
the CIAA football opener for both teams at Broughton High
School Stadium. The win raised the Falcons’ record to 2-1
overall. The Tigers stayed winless at 0-3.
Miller took the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to
give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. His 32-yard touchdown run in the
third quarter was the game’s final score.
Sanders dominated in between Miller’s scores. The 5-foot-11,
210-pound tailback gained a huge chunk of his yards on a 65yard touchdown scamper to open the second quarter. His
score stretched the Falcons’ lead to 21-7.
Sanders rushed for over 100 yards for the second
consecutive week. The school’s career rushing leader since
2002, Sanders helped the Falcons rush for a whopping 220
yards.
The Falcons also scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass from
Joaquin Green (Redshirt Soph./Pittsboro, N.C.) to Jone’
Harris (Sr./Fairfield, Calif.) and a 21-yard field goal by
Alexander Tucker (Fr./Union, S.C.). Green completed seven
of 13 passes for 95 yards.
The defense also contributed as linebackers Mark Hall (Sr./
Suitland, Md.), Steven Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) and
Chaz Robinson (Fr./Hampton, Va.) combined for 30 tackles
including a game-high 11 by Hall.

The Falcons wasted little time against the Lions, who dropped
to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA Northern Division. The lead
was 32-7 by halftime, and the Falcons went on to record their
highest point total since 2002.
Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.), the CIAA's rushing
leader, continued his string of 100-yard games. His 64-yard
touchdown run in the first quarter set the tone for the Falcons.
He finished with 15 carries for 111 yards, becoming the first
Falcon runner in the modern era to reach the century mark
three consecutive contests.
The Falcons scored 26 points in the second quarter to turn
the game into a rout. After Alexander Tucker (Fr./Union, S.C.)
added a 21-yard field goal, Jeremy Banks (Fr./Montgomery,
AL) blocked a punt which Shonquez Nelson (Fr./Lake City,
S.C.) recovered off the bounce and scored on a 10-yard return for a 16-0 lead. Deonte Toliver (Soph./Gaithersburg, Md.)
exploded 44 yards for another Falcon touchdown before the
Lions finally scored on an 80-yard pass from Laquan Williams
to Anthony Wilson. Tucker booted a 39-yard field goal for a 32
-7 Falcon lead at halftime.
Joaquin Green (Redshirt Soph./Pittsboro, N.C.) connected
with Tyron Laughinghouse (Soph./Greenville, N.C.) for a 63yard touchdown to begin the third quarter. Backup quarterback Teddy Bacote (Redshirt Fr./Hampton, Va.) added two
touchdown passes - one to Brian Richards (Fr./Waldorf, Md.)
and the other to Jermaine Jones (Fr./Wilmington, N.C.) - in
the second half to round out the scoring for the Falcons.
Green completed 7 of 11 passes for 160 yards.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Saint Augustine’s College pulled
off possibly its biggest win since restarting football in 2002
with a 40-35 victory over nationally-ranked and previously
unbeaten Winston-Salem State at Bowman Gray Stadium.
CIAA rushing leader Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.)
rushed for 121 yards and scored two touchdowns on 34 carries and the Falcons (5-1 overall, 4-0 CIAA) forced six turnovers to gain first place in the CIAA’s Southern Division.
The win was also the first in five tries against the Rams since
2002, and extended their current winning streak to four
games
RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's College defeated
Fayetteville State 42-36 in a CIAA game at Broughton High
School.
The victory was on Homecoming Day before a crowd of
approximately 4,125 mostly pro-Falcon fans including current
students and alumni. It avenged a 56-6 drubbing last year at
the hands of the Broncos, the defending CIAA champions.
Led by the running of Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.), the
Falcons made sure the Broncos would not derail them this
year. Sanders had his second best day as a Falcon, carrying
30 times for a season-high 243 yards and three touchdowns.
He almost broke his school record of 262 yards against
Chowan University set in 2008.
The Falcons started fast in the first quarter. Joaquin Green
(Redshirt Soph./Pittsboro) found Jone' Harris (Sr./Fairfield,
Calif.) for a 23-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive for
a 6-0 lead. The margin stretched to 19-0 in the first quarter
following two long touchdown runs by Sanders. He scored
from 41 and 70 yards to the crowd's delight.
The Broncos pulled within 35-29, but Sanders scored his third
touchdown on the day - a 7-yard run - for a 42-29 lead with
six minutes left in the game. The Broncos scored a
touchdown with 18 seconds left in the game but the Falcons
recovered the onside kick which sealed the victory.
The win was the third in a row for the Falcons, who stayed
unbeaten in the CIAA (3-0).
The Rams (6-1, 4-1 CIAA) entered the contest unbeaten and
looking unbeatable. They were ranked 17th nationally in Division II and ranked first in several league categories but none
of that mattered to the Falcons, who have scored 30 or more
points in four consecutive games.
The Falcons, aggressive from the outset, capitalized on six
turnovers to take a 30-7 halftime lead. Linebacker Steven
Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) led the way with two interceptions and a fumble recoveriy to go along with 10 tackles.
Linebacker Mark Hall (Sr./Suitland, Md.) added seven tackles.
Sanders capped the opening drive of the third quarter with a
25-yard run to make the score 37-7. The Rams scored late in
the third quarter to cut the deficit to 37-14.
Nicolas Cooper scored on a short run to pull the Rams within
37-21. But just when momentum appeared to turn in the
Rams’ favor, defensive lineman Romeo Deloatch (Fr./
Hampton, Va.) intercepted a tipped pass in Falcon territory. It
was the Rams sixth turnover.
The Rams kept clawing away down the stretch. Smith hit Dominique Fitzgerald for a 51-yard touchdown pass. Smith
passed to Tyrone Goldston for the two-point conversion to
close the score to 37-29 with 6:45 left in the game.
The Falcons relied on Sanders to run out the clock as they
moved the ball inside Ram territory.
Tucker booted the game-clinching 42-yard field goal to push
the score to 40-29 Falcons with 1:40 left.

regular-season games left, the Falcons (6-1 overall) are
assured of their first winning season since 2005.
After big wins over Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem
State the previous two weeks, the Falcons had their hands full
against Central State (1-6). The Marauders had first-and-goal
at the Falcons' five-yard line late the fourth quarter, but the
Falcons stopped them with 59 seconds left in the
game. Steven Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) of the Falcons
made the key play, tackling Josh Anderson for a four-yard
loss on third down. The Marauders threw an incomplete pass
in the end zone on fourth down.
The tackle capped another outstanding effort from Stanback,
who collected a game-high 13 tackles including three tackles
for loss and one interception. Stanback led a defense which
forced three turnovers and made several big plays in holding
the Marauders to 268 total offensive yards. Mark Hall (Sr./
Suitland, Md.) added nine tackles.
Tailback Walter Sanders was an offensive force for the
Falcons. He rushed 27 times for 147 yards and a touchdown,
marking his sixth consecutive game over 100 yards. Sanders.
the CIAA's rushing leader, is only 31 yards away from
becoming the school's first 1,000-yard rusher in the modern
era.
The Marauders intercepted a pass on the game's second
play, leading to a one-yard run by Josh Anderson for a
surprising 7-0 lead. The Falcons turned to Sanders early in
the second quarter and he responded with two long runs, the
second one being a 31-yard jaunt for a touchdown which tied
the score at 7-7.
Sanders' touchdown started a string of 21 unawswered points
for the Falcons in the second quarter. Teddy Bacote (Redshirt
Fr./Hampton, Va.), starting in place of Green, scored on a
one-yard run and tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tyron
Laughinghouse (Soph./Greenville, N.C.) to put the Falcons
ahead 21-7 at halftime. Dedrick Early's (Jr./Warner Robins,
Ga.) long return off a blocked field goal led to Bacote's short
scoring run, and Chris Tucker's (Sr./Hampton, Va.) fumble
recovery set up Bacote's scoring pass to Laughinghouse.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 24th ranked Saint Augustine’s College, led by 208 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 33
carries by Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) opened a 21-0
first-quarter lead en route to a 34-24 CIAA football victory
over Johnson C. Smith Saturday at Irvin Belk Complex. With
the win, the Falcons (7-1 overall, 5-0 CIAA) stayed atop the
Southern Division standings with two regular-season games
left.
Sanders, the CIAA rushing leader and the nation’s thirdleading rusher, became the school’s first 1,000-yard runner in
a season during the modern era. In surpassing the milestone,
Sanders gained over 100 yards for the seventh straight game.
Teddy Bacote (Redshirt Fr./Hampton, Va.), starting the second straight game in place of injured Joaquin Green (Redshirt
Soph./Pittsboro, N.C.), completed 11-of-17 passes for 177
yards and one touchdown. Five passes went to Tyron Laughinghouse (Soph./Greenville, N.C.) for 108 yards and one
touchdown.
On defense, linebacker Steven Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills,
Md.) had another outstanding day. Stanback had a game-high
10 tackles with one interception.
Sanders gained 122 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries in the first half to lift the Falcons to a 28-3 lead at halftime. Needing 31 yards to reach 1,000 yards entering the
game, Sanders surpassed the mark on the opening drive
which he capped with a 13-yard run on fourth down for a 7-0
Falcons lead.
On the Falcons’ second series, Sanders rambled 45 yards for
his second touchdown to stretch the lead to 14-0.

SAINT AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE 6 (Nov. 6)
SALISBURY, N.C. - For one half, 23rd-ranked Saint
Augustine’s College had its hands full with winless
Livingstone College.
But the visiting Falcons took charge in the second half for a
33-0 football victory at Alumni Memorial Stadium. With the
win, the Falcons tied a school record for season wins in the
modern era. More importantly, the Falcons (8-1, 6-0 CIAA) will
play Shaw next Saturday for the Southern Division title and a
berth in the CIAA Championship Game. Both Saint
Augustine’s College and Shaw are tied for first in the
Southern Division at 6-0.
The Falcons capitalized off two of the Blue Bears’ four
second-half turnovers to surge ahead. Mark Hall (Sr./Temple
Hills, Md.) recovered a fumble on the first play from
scrimmage in the third quarter which led to a 33-yard
touchdown pass from Teddy Bacote (R-Fr./Hampton, Va.) to
Tyron Laughinghouse (Soph./Greenville, N.C.) for a 7-0 lead.
Dedrick Early (Jr./Warner Robins, Ga.) picked off a pass on
the first play of the next series and ran untouched into the end
zone from 35 yards to push the lead to 14-0. Alexander
Tucker (Fr./Union, S.C.) tacked on a 32-yard field goal to
make the score 17-0.
In the fourth quarter, Tucker added a 40-yard field goal, CIAA
rushing leader Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) scored on
a five-yard run and Brian Richards (Fr./Waldorf, Md.) scored
on a 52-yard punt return for the 33-0 final score.
The score was tied 0-0 at halftime despite the Falcons
outgaining the Blue Bears (0-10, 0-6 CIAA) in total offensive
yards (135-52) and winning time of possession (16:51-13:09).
But the Blue Bears kept Sanders, the No. 2 leading rusher in
Division II, in check, holding him to 27 first-half yards. Bacote
did complete 10-of-17 passes for 97 yards and Jone’ Harris
(Sr./Fairfield, Calif.) grabbed four passes for 49 yards but the
Falcons were held scoreless at the half for the first time since
Sept. 11 against Mars Hill.
The second half was a different story, however, as the
Falcons gained their seventh straight win and remained
unbeaten in the division. Linebacker Steven Stanback (Sr./
Temple Hills, Md.) led the Falcon defense to their first shutout
this season. He amassed a game-high 12 tackles including
three tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Anthony Harris (Jr./
Raleigh, N.C.) added two sacks and two quarterback hurries.
RALEIGH, N.C. - The crosstown showdown between arch
rivals Saint Augustine’s College and Shaw University turned
into a defensive battle, but the Bears generated enough offense for a 10-6 victory at Broughton High School before
4,528 fans which gave them the CIAA Southern Division title
and a spot in the CIAA Championship Game next weekend.
The Bears (8-2, 7-0 CIAA) will be in the league title game for
the third time in four years. Despite the loss, the Falcons (82, 6-1 CIAA) finished one of their best regular seasons in
school history, matching a modern school season record for
wins. They entered the game ranked nationally in two Division II polls and ranked seventh in Super Regional One while
the Bears were ranked eighth in the region.
Raymond Williams of the Bears scored what turned out to be
the game-deciding touchdown on a 35-yard run with 3:20 left
in the game. The touchdown and extra point came three
plays after Rico Brown recovered a fumble on fourth down
which stopped a Falcon drive inside the Bears’ 30-yard line.
On the next series, the Bears intercepted a pass to stop another potential Falcon scoring drive. The Falcons got one
more shot after forcing a punt, but a last-gasp pass at midfield fell incomplete.
Chaz Robinson (Fr./Hampton, Va.) of the Falcons was the
defensive star of the game, amassing a game-high 17 tackles
which is a career-high. Steven Stanback (Sr./Temple Hills,
Md.) and Anthony Coleman (Soph./Decatur, Ga.) both added
seven tackles for the Falcons.

GAME 11: SAINT AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE 20, FORT VALLEY STATE 9
PIONEER BOWL XII - Columbus, GA - McClung Memorial Stadium (Dec. 4)
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Saint Augustine’s College scored 14
consecutive points in the second half to defeat No. 22 ranked
Fort Valley State University 20-9 for the 2010 Pioneer Bowl
championship.
The match up was played Saturday at A.J. McClung Memorial
Stadium.
The Falcons (9-2) set several milestones with the victory. In
addition to eclipsing a modern school record for wins, the
Falcons won their first Bowl and post season contest in recent
memory. The Falcons concluded their best season since the
1930’s.
The Falcons become the third CIAA team to win the Pioneer
Bowl in the event’s 12-game history. This was the Falcons’
first appearance in the Pioneer Bowl.
Senior tight end Jone’ Harris was named Pioneer Bowl MVP
after catching three passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns
for the Falcons.
Harris was also selected offensive player of the game.
Defensively, senior linebacker Steven Stanback stepped up
for the Falcons, totaling 13 tackles. He also amassed
3.0 tackles-for-loss and two sacks.
With 1:10 left in the first quarter, Fort Valley State’s Courtney
Daniel returned a Falcon fumble for a 67-yard touchdown to
claim the first score of the evening.
The second quarter would remain scoreless until a 14-yard
pass from Teddy Bacote to Harris put the Falcons on the
board with 21 seconds left in the first half. The PAT, however,
was blocked and returned by FVSU to give the Wildcats a 9 6 lead at the half.
The Falcons answered early in the second half with a 73-yard
pass from Joaquin Green to Jermaine Jones for a 12-9 lead.
The Falcons added another touchdown in the fourth quarter
when Bacote connected with Harris for a 31-yard score.
FVSU, which tied for second in the SIAC, ended the season
at 8-3 overall.
