Welcome to the
Wandsworth Arts Fringe
2016 Programme
In May this year Wandsworth’s nooks and crannies are going to be
filled with some of the most exciting and dynamic live arts events.
You could find yourself in a Russian summer house in The Bedford
pub, watching a medieval puppet show in Heathbrook Park or
on a Midnight Run through Nine Elms. Whether you enjoy street
performances, family workshops, exhibitions, music or dance, there is
something for everyone.
This brochure and the wandsworthfringe.com website offer an easy
way to see what is on, when and where it’s on, and includes info and
links to book tickets. You’ll find many of the events are free to attend
although booking is advised.
New and often experimental work is shown in a huge variety of indoor
and outdoor venues during the Fringe - it’s a special time to get out
and try something new. Many of the events are drop in and accessible.
We are particularly proud to have BSL interpreted performances this
year. We encourage you to choose an event or performance you
haven’t heard of before in a new venue you haven’t visited. Experience
energetic, contemporary creativity in places you wouldn’t expect.
Thanks, as ever, to our fantastic, diligent steering group, Enable
Leisure & Culture Arts Team, Cath Mattos and an ambitious team of
young producers who have worked hard to realise this year’s Fringe.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Mr Guff and Mr Batersby are currently globe trotting
and inaugurating Wandsworth Arts Fringe as far away as
Adelaide, Sydney, Womad and Belfast announcing WAF
WAS HERE with a commemorative Blue Plaque!
Miles of ribbons and kilometres of ties will have been cut
as they travelled not only to the boroughs of London, but
historical landmarks of the world, placing their plaque
and cutting the ribbon (and their ties) to celebrate WAF.

Conscious Theatre
Nitroglicerina Theatre
Fragility
This is a wicked cocktail of fiercely ironic
performance laced with hilariously surreal
buffoonery. It investigates the way European
Media talks about immigration, putting our
reaction in the spotlight.
Joan Littlewood: brilliant, maverick,
revolutionary, rude. A series of snapshots to
show the woman behind the myth. A glorious,
lively one-woman show using Joan’s mix of
politics and variety. From triple award-winning
company Conscious Theatre.
An immersive theatre performance directed by us
but created by you. Don a mask and dive into a
surreal modern morality play whose story has yet
to be told. “Totally Unique!” “Really wonderful! it
made me feel euphoric” (Ed Fringe review 2015)
It’s about the profile picture and whether or not
you wake up like this, but it’s also about who
took it, the last time you got heartbroken by your
phone, about sex, and about other things that
you don’t want your mum to see on Facebook.

Uplifting stories about mastering the fears
that blind us, ignoring those niggling doubts
and winning. 2013 TO&ST award-winner Lynn

Spawny John, an army veteran, and Duck, an

is accessible for all. Join us for Hidden Heathbrook on 7 and 14 May with free
music, cabaret, puppets, dance and a big art picnic!
Heathbrook Park is one of a number of public parks or gardens in Battersea that
were created from areas of derelict land following bomb damage in WWII. It is
a little local secret near Wandsworth Road station and once inside, mature trees
and a surprisingly large green space become apparent. Hidden Heathbrook offers
fun for all the family over two Saturdays from 1–4pm that celebrates creativity in a
beautiful outdoor setting.

Criminal Justice Treasure Trail
Bite Size Poets Mic Night
Battersea has ‘previous’. It has a rich, deep
and sometimes dark criminal justice history,
shrouded in mystery. Poetics clues will uncover
the hidden heritage of local streets and
buildings, with prizes for the pairs who think
and finish fastest.
Our poetry workshops made Bite Size Poets.
Come watch them perform their full size
poems, next to illustrious names such as Joelle
Taylor and Sara Hirsch. There is an open mic if
a poet resides within you, or just come along
and stand up for stanzas.

Music from the Shirley Partbooks, copied by
William Lawes in the 1620s, with some of the
