This scheme is for girls from underprivileged background from within the country and abroad like Uganda, Kenya, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Gambia, Afghanistan, etc. 4.4 Does the University provide bridge/remedial courses to the educationally disadvantaged students? The University follows an internationally wellestablished process of skills training, counseling and overall personality and psycho-social development. Yes, the provision for scholarships is an important aspect of the overall strategy of NIILM University to attract and retain talented students to provide increased access and widen opportunities based on equality. NIILM University is among the few University in the country that has offered such a large number of scholarships. Students receive 75% to 100% scholarship for recognized merit. More unique are the awards of partial to full fee waivers through a merit-cum-need based NU test and interview. 4.5 Does the University provide any financial help to the students from socially disadvantageous group? It is a fundamental belief at NIILM University that those who have an uncommon potential to contribute positively to society and those who have a positive dedication, keenness and a commitment toward pursuing higher education shall not be denied an opportunity to acquire quality education irrespective of their ability to pay. The University is also running GGGS Program in which it provides free education to girl students from underprivileged background from within the country and abroad. The University is located in relatively Rural area in Haryana therefore the overall fees charges by the University is economical compared to fees charged by Universities in Urban area. For our regular students also, we remain a most affordable university as we have subsidized fees in order to make quality education accessible to youth from smaller cities. Nominate - a - Scholar is the privilege given to Principals of all schools to identify gifted students in any field who may not have the means to pursue their goals. Continuous class evaluation and the examination patterns follow the stringent process to ensure quality education in the university. In order to further facilitate the learning process, each student are issued with a Course Pack at the beginning of the semester. The lessons in the Course Pack are arranged in the same order as the lesson plan. Each lesson contains the summary of the subject matter with practical examples/case studies/numerical examples, etc. These are written in conversational language. Attempts have been made to provide adequate details/ explanation of the subject matter. Assessment of examination is divided into result of internal assessment and semester exams. Internal Assessment Our Internal assessment, or curriculum-embedded assessment system, evaluates what students do when they are in the classroom. Internal assessment is a crucial part of the instruction process in art and aids teachers, students, and parents in evaluating student progress. Internal assessment illustrates aspects of student progress that are not typically evaluated in external assessment. University’s Internal assessment also serves as a basis for professional development. It helps Teachers to analyze the work of their students and to see trend in student performance that may be related to instruction. For example, a teacher who sees that the products of his/her art students lack depth may wish to take advanced art courses to elicit more depth in student products. University’s ongoing practice of internal assessment enables teachers to monitor learning as part of their teaching process. Teachers make data-based decisions to adjust instructional strategies so that they accommodate the different needs and learning styles of students. Data also aid students in self-assessment by providing them with critical feedback. Particularly useful examples of internal assessment are checklists, student journals, in-class work, peer reviews, conferencing, and portfolios. Internal Assessment of students is based on: Attendance: All students should be encouraged to attend every lecture, tutorial and practical class, however, a minimum of 66% overall attendance is mandatory. A student with less then 66% attendance in a subject during a semester automatically stands dropped for that semester. Assignment Each student would be expected to submit assignment/s during a Semester. Each student deputed on practical training has to prepare a project report and present it before faculty for its evaluation. Class Participation. The classroom interaction/ discussion between the student and the teacher, student and student, etc on case study or practical problems. University has constituted a committee for internal Assessment in each Dept, disciplinewise, which comprises of the senior most faculties. Each student is required to furnish written assignments and projects/term papers/seminars/ field-work, etc. for his/her complete Internal Assessment. Semester Exam External assessment system of the University referred to as standardised examination which is conducted in the form of a written test. These external assessments have high reliability as it ensures that all students are assessed on the same tasks and that their results are measured by the same standards. Moreover, external assessment is conducted in supervised conditions which ensure that the work being assessed has actually been done by the student. In Management Courses, 70% weightage is assigned for end-term assessment and rest 30% for continuous evaluation. In Engineering Programmes, 66.66% weightage is assigned for end-term assessment and rest 33.34% for continuous evaluation. For overall evaluation of Examination System, the University promotes following systems: Credit System The Credit system is based on the process of continuous evaluation of the students’ performance, the absence of pass/ fails on an annual basis and the flexibility to allow the students to progress at their own pace, subject to the regulation of credit requirements. Each subject is assigned a certain number of credits depending upon the number of contact hours per week in respect of lectures/tutorials and laboratory / practical/studio work hours. The credit value is assigned as under: a) 1 Lecture/tutorial hour per week = 1 credit b) 2 Practical/studio' work hour per week = 1 credit Example: A subject requires 3 lecture hours, 1 tutorial hour and 2 practical hours per week to complete the syllabus, it would have a credit value = 3 + 1 + 2xl /2 = 5 Earned Credit. The credit for a course in which a student scores a 'D' or above grade will be counted as credits earned. Any course in which a student earns 'E' will not be counted towards his/ her earned credits. The student will have a choice of changing the subject or repeating the subject in which he/she earns 'E' grade, provided it is not a core subject, in which case it has to be repeated. Grading System Award of Grade. The existing system of evaluating a student uses a scale of 101 points (0-100 marks in each subject) with each subject having its own evaluation criteria. Thus adding marks scored in different subjects to arrive at a total and award the student a division (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) appears illogical. Besides, in the existing system a student scoring 60% marks would be awarded First division whereas a student scoring 58% or 59% marks would be awarded Second division, but would they be vastly different? It would be advisable use Letter Grade and Grade Point Average (GPA) system. The letter grades, their equivalent grade points and the meaning of each letter grade are explained below: Letter Grade Point Interpretation 4 Exceptionally Grade A(+),A good/ outstanding performance demonstrating a superior understanding of the subject, a foundation of extensive knowledge and a skillful use of concepts. Although a minimum of 80% marks are generally set for the award of W grade, yet the individual course coordinator may set a higher/lower requirement depending on the overall class performance. A(-) 3.7 Exceptionally good performance demonstrating a high understanding of the subject, a foundation of extensive knowledge and a skillful use of concepts, however with shortfall in practical application. Although a minimum of 70 % marks are generally set for the award of 'N grade, yet the individual course coordinator may set a higher/lower requirement depending on the overall class performance. B(+) 3.3 Very good performance demonstrating capacity to use: the appropriate concepts, a good understanding of the subject matter with an ability to handle the problems and materials encountered along with practical application of the concepts. B 3.0 Very good performance demonstrating capacity to use the appropriate concepts, a good understanding of the subject matter with' an ability to handle the problems and materials encountered with average an ability to handle practical problems. 5.10 Continuous Internal Evaluation Annexure - 7 In terms of Students Realizing that the teaching and learning methods employed by the faculty members have profound impact on the progression of the students therefore University has introduced an intense teaching-learning methodology. The system has developed a deep sense of learning in a relaxed environment and has inculcated among the students lasting learning desire. The teaching system has developed skills and competencies along with the values among the students. As a part of the continuous evaluation process in the Visual Arts area, student’s portfolio consisting of the work during the entire year are assessed and given due weightage based on following points: Class Participation. It forms the backbone of the system of Continuous evaluation. The students should be expected to have gone through the pre-study material and come prepared for discussion. The quantum and quality of learning through discussion would be much superior to simple delivery of the course material in the classroom. The process is intended to identify the following aspects in a student: Commitment to learning. Regularity to attend classes. Desire to studiously go through the study material and research books, Net, etc. to gain significant knowledge. Ability to present his point view systematically/ logically. Ability to take criticism. Approach adopted to find solution to a given problem. Communication skills. The entire process of teaching/ learning should be focused on training minds to deal with any situation (related or unrelated). Following methodology should be adopted with certain modifications: The course pack comprising lesson plan and precourse study material should be issued to the students at the beginning of the semester. The students should also expected to go through this document and come forward for discussions and presentations. The faculty member selects a student through the draw of lots. The student would be expected to explain the salient aspects of the lesson in his own language. He may use his notes, OHP, PowerPoint Presentations, etc. The students should be allowed to intervene the presentation being made by the student as well as the teachers. All students who make positive contribution to classroom discussions should be awarded extra marks. The teacher also initiates the process of discussion based on the presentation made by the students. Similarly, 6-7 students should be chosen in a random manner as stated above during each class. Each student should be allotted 5-6 minutes for his presentation or responding to the queries raised by the students. The classroom interaction literally means the discussion between the student and the teacher, student and student, etc. It does not imply teaching by the student. At the end of the presentations made by the students (6-7) in about 30 to 40 minutes time, the teacher explains the subject in great detail once against and attempts to generate discussions that would help clarify the doubt. The teacher generally devotes 30-40 minutes for clarifications and question/answer. The teacher then takes up a practical problem or case study and discusses each aspect of theory to find its application to the practical problem. The teacher devotes last 10 minutes to clarify the technical aspects of the next topic of the lesson plan. The discussion helps the students to focus on their preparation. The grades are awarded by evaluation of the following parameters: Understanding of the subject and commitment to learning. Logical presentation of the concept / view point. Quality of presentation. Quality of communication. Ability to critically debate on the viewpoints raised by other students. Marks acquired by the students should be announced to them on the same day and put up on the notice board by the lecturer within a week. The students should be allowed to make representations in writing within 72 hrs of the display of the marks. The final grades awarded for classroom interaction are based on average of all the awards. Zero would be awarded to the absentees, if his/her name appears in the draw. Assignment Each student would be expected to submit two assignments during a Semester. Different Assignment is given to different syndicates. All members of the syndicates are expected to discuss the problem and find solution to the same. Each member of the syndicate is expected to equally participate in solving the assignment. All students of the syndicate are expected to submit the assignment individually. While they are expected to present common solution, they have the opportunity to express themselves as individuals and demonstrate their exceptional ability. They may recommend deletion/modification/ deletion/modification/ addition to the syndicate solution. Students may furnish additional data / information downloaded from the Internet and put up diverse views away from syndicate solution. Each student should require to make self and peer evaluation as per a format. This is a confidential document between the students submitting the assignment and the faculty member.
