Outdoor research – building integration
Launching the SolarBEAT Research Facility in
close collaboration with TU/e building physics.

Analyzing Integration aspects
Prototypes used to determine the Performance Model
• Performance (kWh/min) under realistic climate
• Preferably one full year = all seasons
• Building integration aspects (durability, water tightness,
thermal, moisture, wind load, etc…)
• Electrical integration aspects
• Feedback from architects and project developers (a.o. on
aesthetics)
Learning points can be adapted by project partners directly,
leading to continuous product improvement cycles.

Infrastructure of SolarBEAT
• A prepared roof such that dummy building structures can
be mounted.
• A fully equipped weather- & solar-station.
• Equipment for accurate measurement of temperatures and
electrical performance.
• Equipment for measuring performance on warm water
production.
• Data base structure and data handling infrastructure.

Big data !?
At the moment:
• 5 projects
• 9 datalogger
• 564 sensors (of 44 types of 25 classes)
• fastest sensor @1Hz, luckily not all
• common sampling once per minute
• give 12,862,000 datapoints/day
• produce 247 Mb/day (=91 Gb/yr)
These numbers will grow as new projects start up!

Overview Related Projects
The following SEAC projects will do research on building
integration in the new test facility:
• Low Cost Integrated (LOCI)
• Light weight Roof BIPV (LiRoB)
• Sun Cycle
Just a very quick look.
They will come back in future SEAC-colloquia.

Low Cost Integrated (LOCI)
Solar Energy Application Center - Confidential
Low Cost Integrated (LOCI)
USP’s:
• Cost reduction on installation
• True BIPV: no other building shell needed below the
LOCI-elements
• Targeting large renovation market of social housing,
which strives for lower energy houses (NL ‘bestaande
bouw’ directive: CO2-reduction of 2%)

Light weight Roof BIPV (LiRoB)
Solar Energy Application Center - Confidential
Light weight Roof BIPV (LiRoB)
USP’s:
• Light weight
• Innovative construction principle (COSMOS)
• Easy mounting
• Cost reduction on materials and installation
• Market: both renovation and new housing
Solar Energy Application Center - Confidential
Sun Cycle working principle
Solar Energy Application Center - Confidential
Sun Cycle
USP’s:
• Concentrating solar more cost-effective than nonconcentrating, like crystalline and thin-film (direct
light needed)
• Combined with solar water heating
• Tracker is internal (cf. external trackers of
competition)

Topics of Research
• Performance (yield) models for BIPV and PVT
• Building integration aspects of BIPV in roofs and facades
(water tightness, ventilation, condensation, …)
• BIPV in combination with other roof elements (chimneys,
dormers)
• Partial shading effects
• Architectural customization of BIPV (color, size, shape,
patterns)
• Operation and Maintenance aspects (pollution, repair &
replace)
• Safety aspects

IV-curves
• Similate IV completely in software (by
using panel datasheet)
• Measure IV (typical every minute)
Comparison of similation & measurement
for BIPV-relevant aspects, like shading of
dormers, and other BI-stuff
