DEAR FELLOW RMA
Chapter Leaders ,
As a long-time RMA Chapter Board member and an avid fan of the
NFL (go Vikings!), I can’t help but notice that the RMA chapter
calendar and the NFL calendar have a lot in common. Each fall,
NFL teams kick off their seasons after an off-season break that
includes coaching changes, roster moves, and strategizing for the
upcoming season. In a similar way, RMA chapters also kick off
their “season” in the fall after a summer break that includes board
transition and vital planning for the year ahead. Just as NFL teams
need coaching, talent, and hard work to carry out their game plans
for each week, your chapter board works together to execute your
plans for each event and the year as a whole. And whether or not
your chapter has a “Super Bowl” or some other signature event, at
the end of the season, you will have a chance to take a break, draft
new talent, and look back at what went well to determine needed
improvements or other changes so your chapter can continue
serving the members in your area.
In running a successful NFL team, one of the most critical times of
the year is during the off-season league meetings, when teams have
a chance to meet with executives and coaches from other teams and
spend time with people from league headquarters. For the RMA
chapter boards, this time is the Chapter Leaders Conference (CLC),
and on behalf of the 2015–2016 CLC Steering Committee, I invite
you, as a chapter board member, to join us in Indianapolis in
June. Just as you started your RMA “season” last fall, our Steering
Committee has been working since last fall to organize a conference
that will provide valuable tools, current best practices, and key
connections to other chapter leaders and RMA staff. Whether your
chapter is struggling to gain momentum or whether you’re already
at the top of your game, the CLC can help your board become more
effective and provide tools for continuing success. From one chapter
leader to another, please attend this time of collaboration, personal
development, and fun.

In an ever-challenging
world where problems
can be opportunities,
life is examined through
love, integrity, faith, and
enthusiasm. Everyone feels
pressured for time, wealth,
and meaningful relationships, and Agnus attacks this hectic pace
in a meaningful and insightful way. Who says you can’t have it
all? Not Agnus Berenato. After 17 years coaching the Women’s
Basketball team at Georgia Tech, this highly energized mother
of five accepted the head coaching position at the University of
Pittsburgh, a team with the all-time worst record in the Big East
Conference. In just five years, she took the Panthers to the Sweet
Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament, and repeated the feat the
following year. So far, her own children still don’t need therapy.
“Life and How to Survive It” will be a humorous, chaotic, and
inspirational story that shows how Agnus Berenato, a woman
with uncompromising family values, balanced her career,
volunteerism, husband, kids, and nine siblings.
Extraordinarily aspiring, Agnus put herself through high school
and college, got married, and had five children (without ever
taking a maternity leave) and became the winningest coach at
Pitt, only recently to be surpassed at Georgia Tech, and still
found time to visit our troops in Afghanistan and complete
a medical mission in Vietnam. “Life and How to Survive
It” will keep things in perspective and allow you not to take
yourself too seriously! Agnus will inspire you to break down
unrealistic expectations in your professional world by choosing
unconventional solutions to solve daily dilemmas.

J. Tol Broome, Jr. began
his banking career with
BB&T in Wilson, NC in
1983 after receiving a B.S.
in Business Administration
from the University of North
Carolina. Past positions
held with BB&T have included Financial Analyst, Leadership
Development Program Manager, Business Services Officer,
Regional Loan Administrator, Senior Loan Administrator,
Commercial Finance President, Specialized Lending Group
Manager and Chief Commercial Credit Officer and Director of
Regional Corporate Banking.
Broome currently is President of BB&T Mortgage in
Greensboro, NC. The residential mortgage business at BB&T
is one of the 15 largest in the U.S. with total loans in excess
of $30 billion, a servicing book that exceeds $120 billion and
over 2,200 associates. He also is a member of the Bank’s Senior
Leadership Team and is on the Board of BB&T Insurance.
Broome has been active in the Risk Management Association for
over 20 years and holds the Credit Risk Certified designation.
He currently serves as Chairman of RMA. Past positions include
President of the Carolinas Virginias Chapter, President of the
Triad Chapter, Chair of the Chapters and Membership Council,
Credit Risk Council member, Board member and Vice Chair.
Broome has twice won First Place in the RMA Journalistic
Excellent awards (including in 2009 for Expensive Tuition:
Lessons Learned from the Credit Crisis), an annual recognition
for the top articles published in The RMA Journal. He is
married to Pam and has three children and one son-in-law.

Githens is president and chief
executive officer of The Risk
Management Association.
He became the eighth CEO
in RMA’s history on January
26, 2010. In this capacity,
he is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic
direction as well as providing oversight for overall operations of
the association.

veteran, Bjelland previously
was a regional senior loan
administrator for First Citizens Bank. She also served as a
commercial lender with Bremer Bank and with First Bank
System (now U.S. Bancorp) prior to joining TD Bank.
Githens joined RMA in 1997. Prior to his appointment as
president and CEO, he was responsible for establishing and
organizing the Member Relations functions to serve all of
RMA’s members globally, including community banks, large
banks, global banks, and the 120-chapter network. Githens also
directed enterprise risk management and credit risk initiatives
as well as the marketing activities for the Association. He was
actively involved with the regulatory agencies and interacted
frequently with chief risk officers, chief credit officers, and other
risk professionals in the financial services industry.
Bjelland is a member of the RMA Board of Directors and has
served as the Chapters and Membership Council Chair for
the last six years. She is a past president of both the CarolinasVirginias Chapter and the Upper South Carolina Chapter and
has served in several other board positions for both chapters.
Prior to joining RMA, he was employed for more than 25
years in various leadership roles in financial services. He served
as senior vice president of member relations for Visa USA,
was president and CEO of SynapQuest Inc., a subsidiary of
CoreStates Financial Corporation, and managed various credit
and noncredit functions in CoreStates and its predecessor
institution, First Pennsylvania Bank, where he started his
career in banking.

BOARD DEVELOPMENT SESSION (CHOOSE ONE)
Building Your Chapter Board
This session will explore the process of finding and recruiting new
board members and ways to strengthen your existing board. We
will focus on topics such as sources available to find new board
members, making your board diverse, communicating benefits of
chapter board involvement, and ways to vet new board members.
We will also discuss ideas around strengthening your existing board.
Participants are expected to attend all
sessions and stay until the end of the
conference. Please remember to bring
your conference booklet to each session.
You will be asked to make selections for
the membership and board development
sessions on the registration form. You
will be assigned to the session you have
preselected.
Retaining Good Board Members
An effective board should include active members of the RMA
institutions in the chapters’ footprint. Once your chapter has effective board members, it is essential to retain them! This session will
share ideas on how to ensure that these effective board members
continue their vested interest in your RMA chapter.

GENERAL
INFORMATION
This is an RMA members-only event. RMA pays for registration and
hotel room and tax (Wednesday and Thursday nights) for up to three
leaders* per chapter based on eligibility.
CONFERENCE REGISTRATION
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR 2016 CLC
• You must be a board member for FY 2016–2017.
• You must be a member of RMA.
• You must not have attended the conference three or
more times in the past.
*Exceptions:
• RMA will cover a fourth registration and hotel room and
tax (Wednesday and Thursday nights) for chapters who
send a Young Professional committee member. (All YP
committee members will be assigned to YP sessions at
the conference.)
• Additional chapter board members (over three/four)
and those who have attended three or more conferences –
$295.00 registration fee, plus hotel expenses.
You will be responsible for any additional hotel rooms
needed, extra nights, upgraded accommodations, and room
charges before or after the conference, plus all incidental
charges incurred for each night. Please note: Although you
will be asked to guarantee your reservation with a credit
card, the room and tax charges for Wednesday and Thursday
nights will be put on RMA’s master account. Your card
will not be charged unless you 1) don’t show up, 2) stay
additional nights before Wednesday or after Thursday, 3)
book more than one room in your name or upgrade your
room, or 4) charge incidentals (meals, movies, mini-bar,
laundry, etc.) to your room. Check with your local chapter
for expenses it may cover.
Conference registration deadline is May 19, 2016.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, your
registration if free. RMA pays for your hotel room
and tax (please review eligibility rules) for the nights
of Wednesday, June 22 and Thursday, June 23 only.
(You must be an RMA Associate or Professional member
to attend.) If you would like to send additional chapter
officers, the cost is $295.00 per individual, plus travel
and hotel room expenses. Please contact your Regional
Manager if you have any questions.
There is a charge of $125.00 for each spouse/guest (over
12 years of age) attending. This all-inclusive charge covers:
• Attendance at the Meet and Greet Dessert Reception
on Wednesday.
• Attendance at opening reception on Thursday.
•Conference breakfast provided on Friday.

functions, including all social events.

Conference attire is business casual. Because people’s
personal temperature preferences differ and the

suggest bringing a light sweater or blazer to the
business sessions so that you are prepared for

• RMA pays for a standard hotel room and tax (for up to three or four leaders [see

• Our group rate at the JW Marriott Indianapolis is $179.00 single/double, plus tax. This
rate is valid three days before and after the conference, based on room availability.
• The RMA room block is for conference participants only. (If a second room is
needed, for family and guests, please do not book under the RMA block.)
• Space is limited, so please make your reservations early. RMA’s cutoff date is May 19,
however, our block could sell out before that date.
• Hotel reservations must be made by May 19 in order to ensure room and rate

CHAPTER EXCELLENCE AWARDS
The RMA Chapter Excellence Award allows chapters to
highlight a chapter activity in one of four categories:

Programming/Educational Events
Communications
Community Involvement
Academic Involvement
Submissions will be accepted April 1, 2016
through April 30, 2016. All submissions will be
reviewed and all 2015–2016 chapter board
members will vote on the top three in each
category to determine the winners. Winners will
be announced and all finalists will be recognized
at the conference.

Cancellation Policy
Full refunds will be available on all cancellations mailed or faxed to the registrar up to 15 working days prior to the start of the event. Registrations cancelled
6–14 working days prior to the event are subject to a service fee equal to 50% of the registration fee. Registrants who cancel reservations 5 or fewer working
days prior to the event will forfeit the entire fee. Registrants failing to attend the event—no-shows—will not be eligible for refunds.
Attention Non-U.S. Customers: If you cancel your registration with RMA and are due a refund, any foreign exchange differential between your initial payment
and the refund is your responsibility.
