“GHS Soccer to Host State
Tournament Game”
Guided by Coach Pieklo, the Boys’
Varsity Soccer Team defeated Leonia
3-2 in a recent Bergen County Tournament matchup. Garfield wound up
as the Number 8 Seed in this year’s
State Tournament.
Led by team captains Yazmine Musa and Nichole
Idrobo, the GHS Girls’ Volleyball Team made both the
state and county tournaments this year. The Lady Boilermakers also hosted Garfield High School’s first ever “Dig
Pink” Night which raised $650.00 for the Side-Out Foundation dedicated to breast cancer research and awareness.
“Cross Country Turns in Impressive Season”
The Boys’ & Girls’ Cross Country teams had excellent showings this season in
the NJIC Colonial Division Championships. Senior Marcus Gato was 17th for
Garfield and earned 2nd Team All NJIC Honors while Senior Franklin Marquez
received Honorable Mention.
On the Girls’ side, Junior Kylie Nugent had the highest finish of a Garfield girl
in the last 5 years and earned a 7th place medal and First All NJIC for her efforts.
Senior Anna Kapolka was named to the Honorable Mention team. For the NJIC
Freshman Championships, Garfield came home with two medals as Jordan Robinson finished in 7th place with Tyrell Manuel-Weeks right behind him in 10th
place. Sophomore Chelsea Rosairo also earned a medal for her 10th place finish in
the NJIC JV Girls Championship Race.
At the Bergen County Championship Meet, just about every runner finished
with a personal best time. Kylie Nugent once again led the girls with a 22nd place
finish. Breaking 21 minutes for the first time, Kylie missed qualifying for the prestigious Bergen County Meet of Champions by only 5 seconds. All 6 Varsity runners ran the fastest team average in the last five years! The Boys’ Varsity Team
was missing some of its runners, but the three boys that participated ran very well.
Next up for the team is the Bergen County JV & Freshman Championships and
the New Jersey State Championships for the Varsity runners where they hope to
once again run their personal best times.
“GHS Sponsors
SAT Bootcamp”
In an effort to better prepare students
for SAT testing, Garfield High School
sponsored its first ever SAT Bootcamp
on Saturday October 12th and Sunday
October 13th. The event was a combined effort presented by Catalyst Test
Prep. and the Garfield School District.

“Dual Credit Option Offered at GHS”
Bergen Community College’s Dual Enrollment Program
provides an opportunity for high
school students to earn college
credit by taking college-level
courses at their high school.
These courses are taught by high
school teachers who meet college-level educational standards. The dual enrollment program is available to high school
students of senior standing who
have demonstrated academic
readiness and have received the
recommendation of their guidance counselor, school administrator, and parents. Students are
able to simultaneously fulfill
high school requirements and
accrue college credits upon successful completion of the dual
enrolled course. An articulation
agreement, verifying that interinstitutional courses include all
of the academic rigors included
in the Bergen Community College course syllabi, is signed
between Bergen Community
College and the participating
high school.
Currently, U.S. History III
and Anatomy & Physiology
are available as Dual Credit
options at GHS. Work is under way to expand the program in the future.

“GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING
BAND STEPS OFF INTO A GREAT SEASON”
The 2013 Garfield High School Marching Band has enjoyed a highly
successful season thus far with a few notable achievements. The Band’s
season started in August with approximately 30 students attending a 2
week camp which culminated in a preview performance for parents and
friends. As school began, the band participated in the first ever Freshman Pep Rally, dazzling the crowd with a song from their 2013 show
entitled “Breakout Hits”. The students participated in the entire season
of home and away football games this season as well as the Pulaski Day
Parade in both Garfield and New York City. Recently, the band participated in the 5th Annual Weehawken High School Marching Band
Festival, marching at Weehawken Stadium located above the entrance
to the Lincoln Tunnel. The students capped one of the most successful
seasons for the GHS Marching Band with an outstanding performance
that showcased the talent and work ethic of these hardworking students.

“Garfield Adopts Kim Marshall Plan for Teacher
Supervision and Evaluations”
District Mission
In response to recent mandates handed
down by the State Department of Education,
Garfield Public Schools have adopted the
Kim Marshall Plan regarding teacher evaluation and supervision. In essence, the Kim
Marshall plan is meant to improve the way
educators in the classroom approach their
craft. In turn, this will result in positive
growth for students.
The educational community of Garfield believes that the ultimate goal of each school is to provide intellectual experiences
within the context of a multi-cultural setting. This environment
will enable each student to achieve their maximum potential.
Each school shall seek to assist every student in the development of social skills and moral attitudes needed to successfully meet the challenges of a complex, dynamic, and ever
changing world. Each school shall continue to cultivate an appreciation of cultural and aesthetic values so that each student
can make choices indicative of a knowledgeable and contributing member of a democratic society. To fulfill this role, the district is committed to creating a flexible educational environment addressing the individualities and potentialities of each
student. The staff will endeavor to complete the development
of a thinking, tolerant person, well prepared to meet the challenges of school and the life they choose to encounter.
The essential components of the Kim
Marshall Plan include:
- 10 mini-observations for each teacher
- “backwards” curriculum planning
- teacher evaluation rubrics
-
an interim assessment analysis for each
teacher
Through implementation of Mr. Marshall’s plan, teacher evaluations will move
beyond the realm of being a “Gotcha!” experience for the teacher or a “dog and pony
show” played out for administrators. Future
teacher evaluations will redefine supervision
and evaluation while linking both to student
achievement. For more information regarding
Kim Marshall’s work, please visit
www.marshallmemo.com
Kim Marshall began his teaching career
in Boston in 1969. Over a period spanning
more than 40 years, Mr. Marshall has
worked vehemently to improve student
achievement and teacher effectiveness in
Boston Public Schools. Today, he is an accomplished author who works as coach for
new principals in the New York City Public
School System.
Professor Dennis Sevano has been a fixture at Garfield High School
over the last four years. Professor Sevano is part of a cooperative effort
between GHS and William Paterson University to bring training, professional development, and classroom support to teachers throughout the
building. From time to time, Professor Sevano has even taught lessons
surrounding topics such as bullying.
