Technology from racing is pushing
forward rapidly. In years past, racing
innovation ran wild in an outlaw-type
environment. Some areas of professional
racing innovation have been stifled from
sanctioning-body rules that pushed
toward more common spec engines and
the subsequent consolidation of racing
teams. But while racing innovation may
have slowed a little while the economy
faltered, it seems to be back to full steam.
On the new-truck side, production
and sales have slowed, which means the
residual value of used trucks is higher
than we’ve seen in decades. This longer
holding period for trucks may slow parts
sales to new trucks but might bolster
parts sales for older trucks.
We are living in a world where value
wins and service is expected. Excellent
service and delivering value are critically important. We’re investing heavily
in finding ways to improve; that is our
competitive plan.

Custom tuning for bolton modifications is the
current trend in the streetperformance category,

vehicles. For light-truck owners, the
sought-after products are those that have
options for fuel economy and performance, such as air intakes, exhaust and
tuners, and the market for diesel particulate filter delete exhaust and tuning
is also growing tremendously as more
diesel trucks are sold.
Still, retailers must be aware of state
and local emissions laws. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and California Air Resources
Board (CARB) are increasing enforcement activities related to aftermarket
parts. Make sure the street-performance
products you sell are emissions legal, and
put together packages with parts that are
complementary. There are advantages to
pricing a “package” deal that can allow
you to be price competitive and make
more profit.
Stick with parts manufacturers that
have been around for a while and that
invest in product testing. Some of the
new companies entering the market
have great products, but others are copycats or are cutting corners to be first or
cheapest to market. Beware of selling or
installing parts on a customer’s car that
are inferior in quality and design. As a
retailer, it’s your reputation on the line.

More and more consumers are finding the
information they need
online versus the old standard speed shop with a
giant catalog rack. Online
forums let peers discuss different build
types and different vehicle modifications
in a format that is incredibly intuitive,
and people love to argue their point
regardless of whether they know the right
way to go about things.
Consumers are making brand choices
based more on word-of-mouth recommendations and less on sales pitches
from a counterperson; that is something
both manufacturers and retailers should
be mindful of when discussing strategies
to promote their products. The World
Wide Web presents plenty of opportunities for parts retailers to gain respect from
consumers, but it has also made it difficult for many performance parts retailers
to make money, since online shopping
has a tendency to devalue products and
services that were once highly profitable.
There is nothing more important in
today’s marketplace than knowing your
facts and keeping them straight. If there
are inconsistencies in how you advertise
a product versus what it actually does or
make claims that stretch the truth, you
will inevitably be called on it. To stay
competitive in today’s world, credibility
is the key to success.

A lot of the parts that we
are selling are going on cars
that are driven on the street
every day and at the track
on weekends, where all of
the performance claims are
put to the test. There is also a middle
ground where the customer doesn’t want
a stock clutch but does want something
that has more performance.
The days of the fashion accessory as
the primary objective are all but gone. An
end-user who builds a fashion-statement
car is more likely to build only that
one, moving to whatever is hot at that
moment in time. Could be to a boat, cell
phone, truck, whatever. The people in
our segment are going to be in it for the
long haul; it’s a hobby, a lifestyle and an
identity.
The industry needs to value the jobber
and performance shops. The shops must
have a way to market and distinguish
themselves in a unique, value-adding and
sustainable way. In addition, the channels of manufacturing and distribution
must develop programs with them so
that they have an edge. If they have that
knowledge, are active on the forums and
in their communities, shops can develop
as brands and really capitalize on that.

One of the most exciting trends is
the entry of the cool performance vehicles out of Detroit. The new Camaro,
Mustang and Challenger are incredible vehicles and are helping excite the
market and get people thinking about
performance. But you can’t sell from
an empty shelf. The consumer believes
that if he has to wait ’til tomorrow for a
purchase, he may as well go home and
order it by phone or online.
Having stock on the shelf is the
answer to making the sale today, but
that strategy is also a challenge. Very
few retailers—especially smaller stores
and speed shops—have the dollars or
the margins that allow them to fill their
shelves while waiting for consumers to
beat down their doors. It is a very tough
time for retailers today, but the ones I
talk to generally say that they can compete and usually make the sale if they
have the product on hand.

The musclecar wars
are continuing with
production cars that far
exceed the base Mustang
GT and the Camaro SS.
The Mustang Boss 302
is interesting but probably not as significant in the aftermarket as the ’13
GT500 will be, with its 650 hp. The
Camaro ZL1, on sale before the Mustang, will also light the spark. We have
already announced the Hot Rod ZL1/
GT500 Faceoff, a drag-and-autocross
shootout event, anticipating the hot
rivalry among tuners.
The GM LS engines continue to
gain ground with engine swaps into
older cars, but I’d caution smaller,
older-car-focused retailers not to stock
up too heavily on LS parts; in nearly
every case, the manufacturers I ask
admit that the sales of small-block
Chevy and small-block Ford parts are
still many times ahead of LS parts,
despite the buzz. Retailers need to be
educated on the LS but realize that the
core remains with the older engines.
Looking at late-model performance,
the industry will also need to get educated on direct injection, as seen in
the new Camaro V6. The day is also
coming when new-car performance will
once again mean smaller engines with
turbos. Witness the Ford Ecoboost
program. I think GM will follow.

We need to be cognizant
of the growing age of racing
competitors and entice kids
back to performance. Part
of the problem is that normal people can’t even work
on newer cars. Everything is computerized,
so there is no more changing the carburetor
or installing headers. I don’t know what the
answer is, but the industry needs to find
someone who does.
Local tracks are trying different things
to entice customers to stay local and enjoy
the camaraderie of their fellow competitors.
Things such as specialty footbrake races, are
becoming popular as racers find that electronics (computers, timers, etc.) make the
racing so competitive that it’s hard to win.
We’re seeing more locally run series or
circuit races for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series competitors (Stock and Super Stock

Retailers must listen to
and address the needs of
their racing customers by
proving to them that they
know something about
their passion, either by
being involved or by reading up on the
different series and classes. A shop that is
involved with racing adds credibility in
the customers’ eyes. It could be as simple
as sponsoring a local car show or offering
a discount on parts to racers and having
pictures of their cars in the store.
Retailers should keep track of the racing season. Stock up on wear-and-tear
items that racers need during the season
and items for freshening the car in the
off-season. Some racers will also be doing
major upgrades or building a new race
car, so the retailer should stock up on
items for the engine and chassis. If a
racer needs a part at the last minute, he
should feel confident that it will go on as
intended.
Check with the racing sanctioning
bodies for changes in rules and regulations, and stock up on items that address
the changes. Also see what is new from
the manufacturers. Call the manufacturers themselves or use their sales reps. Even
though they work for the manufacturers,
they are great sources of information.
