Happy Holidays! Volume XXIX, Issue 24 Maricopa, Arizona December 18 - December 31, 2015 2015 Masik Tas Celebrating 54 years of sovereignty and its most precious resource December 20th is a historical day for the Ak-Chin Indian Community, for that is when Ak-Chin’s Articles of Association were officially adopted by the people and approved by the Secretary of Interior, formerly organizing Ak-Chin as a sovereign tribal government. Since that significant day, AkChin has strived to improve the equality and betterment of its people for a brighter tomorrow, and over time has officially celebrated what has become Ak-Chin’s birthday or masik tas with a grand gesture of events. This year’s Masik Tas was one for the ages as it celebrated the significance of water with its theme, “Sudagi Od Duakag... Mod Si S-namkigam Haicu Am Ed Vehiejed”, translated to “Water is Life… and our Most Precious Resource”. It also brought in top notch entertainers, as well as two weekends jam-packed with events to please the young and young at heart. The official beginning of the 2015 Masik Tas began with the Elder Chair Volleyball tournament on Thursday December 3. Elder-athletes from many tribes and districts competed inside the Ak-Chin gym, vying for the number one spot. The Miss Ak-Chin pageant was held on Saturday, December 5, with the Jr. Miss Ak-Chin having its inaugural debut. Both were held for the first time in the AkChin Elements ballroom and had 6 participants total vying for their respective crowns. Anyssa Justin and Heaven Smith competed for the first annual Jr. Miss Ak-Chin. Peters The Waste Management Phoenix Open’s Tee-Off Luncheon was Wednesday, December 9, at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort and Spa and featured PGA Tour fan favorite Rickie Fowler as well as long-time CBS commentator Jim Nantz. The Ak-Chin Indian Community was recognized at the luncheon as the local Presenting Sponsor of the Waste Management Phoenix Open (WMPO). Ak-Chin signed a four year agreement as the first local Presenting Sponsor in the history of the Phoenix Open. Dan Mahoney, 2016 WMPO Tournament Chairman praised Ak-Chin for its commitment and support, “The dedication and commitment the Ak-Chins have shown to not only our golf tournament, but also to our community, including their support of the Superbowl and the National Championship Football game has been truly remarkable and we are so grateful for their support.” Chairman Manuel says Ak-Chin is ready to support the WMPO, “The Ak-Chin Indian Community has long understood our role in giving back to the community at large. Through The Thunderbirds and the success of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, we can continue that commitment and provide financial support to several worthwhile organizations throughout Arizona.” WMPO and The Thunderbirds were also praised for having the best stop on the PGA Tour. Last year’s Open raised over 9 million for charity and set record-breaking attendance numbers. The 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open will be held at TPC Scottsdale from February 1-7, 2016. An auction is currently underway for a corporate skybox on the famous 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale. All proceeds will go to charity. Attendees at the WMPO, from L to R: UltraStar General Manager Adam Saks, Councilman Gabriel Lopez, Chairman Louis Manuel, Jr., PGA Tour Golfer Rickie Fowler, Councilman Robert Miguel, Councilwoman Ann Antone, CBS Sports Commentator Jim Nantz, Vice Chairwoman Delia Carlyle and Southern Dunes General Manager Brady Wilson. Dwight hits the streets of Ak-Chin Story and photo by: R. Peters Dwight Yoakam performed to a packed house at Ak-Chin Circle Stage, Thursday December 10. Inside this Issue What do you get when you offer a free concert and a multi-platinum country superstar? A packed audience! That was exactly the tone AkChin Indian Community wanted to set for the 2015 Masik Tas weekend, and Dwight Yoakam brought it all to the Ak-Chin Circle stage on Thursday, December 10. The moment Yoakam hit the stage with his signature vocals and tight fitting jeans, the crowd was fired up and ready for some two-steppin’ and hillbilly music. Song after song, Dwight crooned and strummed for over an hour. When performing “Streets of Bakersfield”, he sung, “He walked the streets of Ak-Chin”. “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere”, “Fast as You”, “Guitars, Cadillacs”, and new music from his latest album “Second Hand Heart” could be heard for miles in the cool desert air. His honkytonk remakes of “Little Sister”, “Ring of Fire”, “Suspicious Minds” and “I Feel Fine” were also crowd favorites. Right after Dwight’s last number was sung, Ak-Chin Fire Department lit up the skies, on cue, to officially signal the grand finale of the main concert series for 2015 Masik Tas weekend. 20 lucky winners had the opportunity to meet and greet with Dwight between his opening act and performance. On Friday, the crowd gathered once again for another free concert as Tejano Superstar AJ Castillo hit the stage with his famous accordion. The crowds gathered up front or on the dance floor to cumbia, huapango, and shout out a grito. AJ played for about 3 hours and once completed he also did a meet and greet after the show. Both performers were given gifts during their shows on behalf of the Ak-Chin Indian Community for coming out and kicking off the Masik Tas Celebration. December 18 - 31, 2015 3a 3a Lisa Chavez blesses ASU Photo by: A.Hall, Story by: J.Ysaguirre Masik Tas continues from front page Lisa Chavez performs the closing blessing to all of the American Indian SunDevil graduates. Arizona State SunDevil and AkChin Community member Lisa Chavez was selected to perform the closing prayer at the American Indian Convocation Graduation ceremony on December 16. The ceremony was held for all American Indian SunDevil graduates. Held at the historic Gammage auditorium, Lisa Chavez gave the blessing to the recent graduates while her family sat in attendance. Lisa currently holds the title of Miss Indian ASU 1st Attendant. The commencement was live streamed via ASU’s webcast and was available to watch for free for friends and family members of the graduates who could not attend the ceremony in person. Lisa Chavez waits to be introduced along with Miss Indian ASU. Holidays are about experiences and people, and tuning into what you feel like doing at that moment. Enjoy not having to look at a watch. —Evelyn Glennie The Jr. Miss competition was an entertaining competition; however Anyssa Justin won all talent competitions and was duly crowned the first ever Jr. Miss Ak-Chin, with Heaven Smith being named 1st Attendant. Ashley Vincent, Esperanza Miranda, Krislyn Pablo and Mathilda Reyna Miguel all completed for the title of Miss Ak-Chin. After each contestant showed off their respective talents, Esperanza Miranda was crowned 2015-16’s Miss Ak-Chin. Esperanza Ashley Vincent was named 1st Attendant and Mathilda Reyna Miguel was selected as 2nd Attendant. Following the dance there was a coronation dance and a dinner with food and drinks which included red chili. Throughout Masik Tas weekend, Ak-Chin Royalty made their presence known, by introductions, shaking hands and receiving hugs from everyone who congratulated them. Toka and Songivu’l games were held on Sunday, December 6, at the newly established rodeo area site just behind UltraStar and Harrah’s west parking lots. The new rodeo arena was a welcomed site, in addition to the stage, and carnival; locating all within easy walking distance. The new rodeo arena also hosted the Toka and Songivu’l games. Over ten teams entered the Toka tournament that lasted almost from dawn to dusk, with feisty O’odham women chasing one another in attempts to pass the o’la (wooden puck) through the goals for points. The 2015 menudo contest was a hotly debated and much discussed competition that was held following the Toka and Songivu’l games, with the voting being determined by members during the community dinner. The Ak-Chin Youth Council ensured that the menudo competition didn’t have any hanging chads which could tilt the voting. “Please remember, this is a menudo contest, not a popularity contest.” said Ak-Chin Youth Council Coordinator Antonio Davis as members of Youth Council passed out slips of paper for voters to write down their winning numbers from the three menudo entrants. After the community dinner, which consisted of delicious shredded bbq beef, cole slaw and beans, Rebecca Ruiz was crowned champion of this year’s Masik-Tas Menudo contest, Octavio Machado won second place honors and Norma Vincent took home third place. While the rodeo and carnival riders were having their day in the sun, cultural entertainment that included; Polynesian, Ak-Chin Ba’ban Keihina, White Mountain Apache and San Juan performers could be found entertaining the crowd. Masik-Tas has proven that the cowboy way still exists in 2015. Utilizing the new rodeo arena, there was an All-Indian Jr. Rodeo on Friday December 11, bull riding, calf dressing and wild horse races all day Saturday December 12, and roping rounded out the arena events on Sunday December 13. Although there were a small handful of local celebrities in attendance at this year’s Masik Tas, one such celebrity made his appearance during the Masik Parade the morning of Saturday December 12. Santa Claus riding his fire truck sleigh made his way down Farrell Road during the extremely cold and windy morning. Though he did not have Rudolph or any other reindeer with him, he still managed to use some of his Christmas magic, keeping the rain and snow at bay for the parade. Over 50 floats were entered in the Masik Tas parade which included floats from the AkChin Airport, Education, Elder, EPD, Housing, Him Dak, Library, and Planning departments After it was all said and done, a dance contest at the old Vaila site helped end this year’s Masik Tas. Dance partners kicked up their heels as Pick Up Kings played for the competition. The Masik Tas celebration has evolved and grown over the years. Each Masik-Tas celebration has gotten bigger and better thanks to the countless hours of service from all of the Ak-Chin departments and Ak-Chin Council. The 2015 Masik-Tas celebration has gone down in history as one of the best celebrations thus far, raising the bar and excitement for next year’s celebration. Happy Birthday, Ak-Chin. The Community Events team would like to thank the following departments/groups/individuals for helping us with the 2015 Masik Tas Celebration! We hope everyone had a great time! Ysaguirre 4a Kids get Grinched at the Library Christmas App time was held at the library on December 9th, 2015. The library provided ipads for the children to use while enjoying this activity. Kids and staff enjoyed taking selfies with the Dr. Seuss Camera App. Photos provided by library The preschool kids got ready for Santa by singing “The Good Morning Song”. Santa Claus left the North Pole to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas to the kids. Santa Claus made a special secret cameo to the Ak-Chin Library on December 10. With just a few short weeks until the big day, Santa asked Mrs. Claus if he could attend the library’s story time to read one of his favorite books of all time, “‘Twas the Night before Christmas”. In an unfortunate and unrelated incident, librarian Jeff Stoffer experienced car trouble so he could not attend this special library story time. Thankfully, library staff Sandiin Mitchell and Yadi Osuna were there and helped the preschool kids sing “The Good Morning Song” and also learn about the letter of the day, the letter J. Santa waved goodbye to all the preschool children and said he was going to return to the North Pole to check his naughty and nice list. Then in an instant, he jumped back onto his sleigh and in a blink of an eye he flew back to the North Pole with the promise of returning back to Ak-Chin. Kids enjoy hearing Santa’s storytelling. They experienced different traditions as they traveled to News Orleans, Florida, Texas, New York City and California, to discover Uncle Nick was actually Santa Claus! Santa finally takes kids back home to spend Christmas with their families. Kids worked very hard on this musical and had a blast! As a teacher, i was impressed and amazed to see so much passion and involvement…as they left the stage they asked me if we could do it all over again… Love my job! Mr. Freitas The kids really turned it up to 11 at the half way point in the show. We look forward to another Awesome Year with your students. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from The Ak-Chin Education Department. A Fantastic Fan Fest and Water Is Life Youth Summit Submitted by Matthew Tess , Ak-Chin Education Department MS Advisor/ Tutor Cowgirl Stella Miguel (center) sings “Teddy Bear Tango” with her class during the Glee under the Tree program. The 2nd and 3rd graders watch in awe as their fellow classmates perform some acrobatics on stage during the Holiday Road Trip Program. Ak-Chin kids who were selected to go were treated to a day at Phoenix Fan Fest Convention, compliments of the Ak-Chin Education Department. On Friday, December 4th, 2015, a select number of Middle School students were able to attend the Phoenix FanFest for 2015. This event is a mid-year event where cosplayers can show off their artistic abilities without worrying about the summer heat of Downtown Phoenix. The students saw some of their favorite comic book heroes, anime and television characters. For lunch, the students were treated to Native New Yorker (thanks to Ak-Chin Education Truancy) where they enjoyed pizza and wings while watching the sports games on TV. We returned to the FanFest after lunch to finish up any last minute fun and shopping. Students tried their hands at an inflatable bouncy obstacle course and got to check out the awesome cars from Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious, Supernatural and my personal favorite the Delorean from Back to the Future (the Flux Capacitor was out of Jigawatts). The students had a great time and are anticipating our next trip. Back in November, a few Middle/High School students signed up to take a trip down to San Xavier and participate in the Water is Life Youth Summit. On Saturday, December 5th, 2015, we left Ak-Chin Education at 6:30am to make it down to San Xavier by 8:30am for the start of the event. The Water is Life Youth Summit started off with a film and led into presentations from native engineers, farmers and council members. The film visualized the changes in our dwindling water resource and how it will impact farmers in the Southwest. Native Water Engineers discussed the varying levels of uranium/arsenic in our soil and how it can impact our food. They reminded us to always wash our fruits and vegetables before consumption. The Vice-Chairman updated us about the current fight for water rights. Once presentations were over, the San Xavier District provided us with lunch and prayer. After Lunch, we split into groups and participated in different activities; activities included rain gardens, cooking, bracelet making, t-shirts and a graffiti wall. The students enjoyed themselves and worked hard (the male students did not want to stop helping with the rain garden). At 4:30pm, we closed with a prayer and began heading home but not before visiting the cross of San Xavier. At press time, their record stands at 1 win with 3 losses and 3 ties. In every one of their ties, the Rams were right there in the trenches battling it out. In their losses, the Rams attempted numerous rallies, trying to even up the score against Salpointe Catholic and Trevor Browne. Sadly, fate was not on their side as they were handed tough losses to both squads. In their game against Desert Ridge on December 6, the Rams came out fast but just couldn’t break through. Champions! Maricopa Wells Middle School Panthers show off their trophy. Laila Gardner (L) and Kalani Williams (R) show off the official 2015 championship trophy. After the Panthers got their 25th and final point, the gym erupted into a frenzy. Hugs, high fives and chants of “Pan-thers!” filled the gym walls as Desert Wind somberly walked off the court. In sports, no matter the grade or level, winning a championship will always be remembered forever. The Maricopa Wells Middle School Panthers turned their dreams into reality on Friday December 11 against Desert Wind Middle School by winning their division’s volleyball championship. Headlined by starters Laila Gardner and Kalani Williams, the Panthers cruised to the easy victory in the best of 3 series against the overwhelmed Desert Wind Tigers. During the first set, the Panthers had the crowd on their side. With chants of “Here we go Panthers” filling the gym, it was more than apparent that the Panthers were out to get yet another championship title. As each point tacked on to Maricopa Wells’ side, the crowd grew louder and louder, which at times resulted in students spilling out onto the gym floor. Thankfully the referee kept everyone in line. This year’s Panthers team played great this season which was capped off wonderfully with a school championship trophy. Their success this year will add yet another banner inside the gym and although players will eventually move up to the high school sports level, their championship season this year will be remembered by everyone who had Panther pride this year. With new head coach Melvin Mitchell at the helm, the Lady Rams appear to have picked up where they left off from last year, boasting a current record at press time of 8 wins and 3 losses. This year’s squad returns the majority of last year’s championship team, including senior Danae Ruiz who just a few weeks ago signed a letter of intent to attend Embry Riddle University in Prescott after graduation this coming May. In their game against Arcadia on December 8, the Lady Rams took to their home court in front of the Ram fanatics. Unfortunately, the champs committed costly turnovers in the early first quarter, resulting in Arcadia taking the early lead. This was a shock to the crowd as Arcadia came into the game with losing record of 3 wins and 4 losses. The second quarter is when the Rams turned up the heat and rallied, limiting Arcadia to only 7 points thanks to staggering defense and glasscleaning rebounding. This year, the Pathway Pumas are looking to defend their title. Since winning it all last year on the floor of the Mercury and Suns, the Pumas and Head Coach Nate Wong have had an offseason of graduations and new additions to the squad. In the midst of gearing up for another dominating season of Puma basketball, opposing teams in their division have taken notice. In their game against the Salt River Eagles on December 11, the Pumas were shown that if they were going to defend their title, every game they play must be treated as a must win. Sadly, the Eagles must’ve had the Pumas circled on their calendar because at tip-off, it was apparent that Salt River brought their A-game to Sequoia High. Much to the surprise of everyone in the gym, the Pumas committed costly turnovers and seemed to be experiencing a rare off-night at home. Missing layups and free throws, the Pumas tried rallying but Salt River kept them at arms-length, pulling out the surprising victory against the Pumas 65-45. In a quick post-game interview, head coach Nate Wong stated, “My hat is off to Salt River and their team, they played really well.” The rematch between these 2 stellar basketball teams is set for January 26 at 5:30, this time the game will be played at Salt River High. Lopez From L to R: Morgan Peters, Amelia Machado, Mariah Carlyle and Carol Ann Enos were awarded student athlete awards from Maricopa High School for their excellence in the classroom and court during the volleyball sports banquet. With MHS Volleyball season coming to an end in October, MHS Volleyball Boosters and the Lady Rams held an awards banquet on November 20, at MHS multipurpose building to recognize and honor the teams for jobs well done on and off the court. Ak-Chin members who participated this year for the Lady Rams included; freshman team player Mariah Carlyle who was recognized for her silent but fierce plays at the net. Sophomore Carol Ann Enos was recognized for her tenacity and continued efforts on and off the court. Juniors; Amelia Machado and Morgan Peters both received certificates and awards for their dedication and play. Amelia was presented with the Ram Award for the JV team, while Morgan was awarded the Coaches Award and shared honors as Player of the Year with Elisabeth Gallon for the Varsity team. Morgan was also recognized for playing varsity for the past three years and given a framed jersey that was also awarded to all outgoing seniors she had played with over the past three years as well. Emily Peters practices her form as she participates in one of the many mini-games Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Kids Golf has each Wednesday and Saturday throughout the month of December. Thankfully, the coyote was a peaceful one and walked away. Perhaps he just wanted a front row seat to the kids golf day. 2015 DECEMBER REC CALENDAR December 18 - 31, 2015 8a 8a Masik Tas Category/Event Winners Songiv’ul Winners 1st Place: Ak-Chin Ba’ban Vopodam 2nd Place: San Xavier JR. December 18 - 31, 2015 9a 2015 Masik Tas Basketball Tournament Photos by: R. Lopez Every Masik Tas celebration, the ballers come out to play. The Ak-Chin Parks and Recreation Department hosted their annual All-Indian basketball tournament over the Masik Tas celebration Weekend. With competitive ball being played over 4 days beginning on December 10, the tournament hosted over 7 women’s teams and 15 men’s teams. This year’s games were a bit different as some games were played at Sequoia Pathway High School instead of exclusively at the Ak-Chin gym. Team IDK won the women’s tournament and Renegades won the men’s tournament. Renegades won it all in the Men’s All-Indian Masik Tas Basketball tournament. 2015 MasikTas Golf Tournament Photos by: R. Lopez The 2015 Masik Tas golf tournament teed off on Friday December 11 at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf course. Over 20+ teams teed off with the hopes of winning some of the sponsor prizes that were up for grabs. The weather cooperated with the course, which made it another beautiful day for golf. Native American and NFL legend Jim E. Warne Jr. was in attendance and played in the golf tournament. A veteran of the 1987 Cincinnati Bengals, Warne Jr. happily posed for photos while trying to get under par. The Masik Tas Southern Dunes golf tournament has grown in popularity each year. With how wonderful the grass and staff treated its golfers that day, its no surprise. Sponsors included: Penta, A.R. Mays, The Thunderbirds and Kilpatrick Townsend (Presenting). The Mahoney Group, Sundt, Yates, and Kitchell (Supporting). 1st place honors were awarded to: Joe Prue, Jason Schurz, Sam Musillami, and JC Wright. 2nd place honors went to; Lee Lafleur, Rob Scheifer, Drew Schueneman, and Ian Ashleman. 3rd place winners included; Cecil Peters, Glenn Boothe, Chuck Schurz, and Jeremy Hager. All winners received a Southern Dunes gift card and tickets to the 2016 WM Phoenix Open. Team IDK won the championship in the All-Indian Women Masik Tas tournament. 9a December 18 - 31, 2015 10a Gingerbread House Recipe 10a Christmas wishes Happy Holidays to Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotic Anonymous Religious Services- Leo Lewis, Jr. Ak-Chin Education – Desiree Guarino, GED Instructor Ak-Chin Language Department Staff Ak-Chin Social Services Staff Thank you all for your contributions to our Detention programs. From: Ak-Chin Detention Facility Ingredients Gingerbread: 8 ounces unsalted butter (16 tablespoons or 2 sticks), softened 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup dark molasses (not blackstrap) 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 6 1/4 cups cake flour 4 teaspoons ground ginger 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon salt Gingerbread House Templates, recipe follows Royal Icing: 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, plus more as needed 2 egg whites Assemble and Decorate the House: Heavy cardboard base for the house Pastry bag with a medium plain tip and a small plain tip Frosted shredded mini-wheats for the roof, as needed Mini tootsie rolls for a fence, as needed White Hershey Kisses for roof top spikes, as needed Small candy canes for a lamp post outside the door, as needed Granulated sugar for snow drifts, as needed Necco Wafers for a cobblestone path, as needed 3 large marshmallows, for snow man Pretzel sticks, for snowman arms, as needed 2 whole cloves, for snowman eyes Graham crackers to build a shed, as needed Assorted candy such as gum drops, peppermint drops, M & M’s, white chocolate chips and Animal Crackers Directions In a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter until smooth. Add the sugar and mix until light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time until incorporated. Add the molasses and vanilla and mix. Sift together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, cloves, and salt. Working in batches, and mixing after each addition just until combined, add the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture. Shape the dough into a thick disk, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease 2 cookie sheets. On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough in half and roll each piece out into a large 1/4-inch thick sheet. Transfer the dough sheets to the sheet pans; then cut out the required shapes with your templates (see Gingerbread House Templates below). Bake until stiff and toast-y, about 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool completely. Make the Royal Icing: In a standing mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the confectioners’ sugar and egg whites together. Add more sugar, if necessary, to reach a spreadable consistency. Assemble and Decorate the House: Glue the house walls together by setting them up on the cardboard base, and piping the royal icing at the joints with a medium plain tip from the inside. Prop the sides up with wine or soda bottles and let set for 30 minutes. Attach the roof pieces, using the icing in the same way Using a spatula to apply the icing, glue the frosted mini-wheats on the roof to look like thatching. Attach the front door, with hinges made from icing (leave it open to be more inviting). Decorate as you like, following the suggestions in the ingredient list, using the icing as glue, if needed. Use a small plain tip for any filigree style decorative line work, you may want. Gingerbread House Templates: Brown paper bags, as needed You’ll need to make 7 templates, by drawing the dimensions out on brown paper and cutting them out. Use the templates as a stencil to cut the dough into the required pieces. Here are the templates you’ll need: Two front and rear walls: 5 inches high by 8 inches long. Cut out 2 windows from each wall, and 2 1/2 by 1 1/2-inch door in one. Two side walls shaped like a house (triangle on a square): 5 inches high by 6 inches long, with a triangle 7 inches high on top (cut all in 1 piece). Cut 1 window out of each side. Two overhanging roof pieces: 4 1/2 inches wide by 9 inches long. One door: 2 1/2 inches high by 1 1/2 inches wide. ChRISTMAS FACTS The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold. In 1962, the first Christmas postage stamp was issued in the United States. Christmas purchases account for 1/6 of all retail sales in the U.S. “Jingle Bells” was originally supposed to be a Thanksgiving song. The highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Jim Carrey version.
