NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY Family Matters INSIDE Chill Chat – Peer Support for Jewish Youth The Growth of Home Support Opening Doors – JHub’s Impact on JFSA www.jfsa.ca Client Outcomes – Stories of Success MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Jewish Family Service Agency has continuously evolved throughout its 77 years of existence to meet the changing times and needs of our community. From its early beginnings as a welfare agency, helping to settle immigrants, the JFSA of today is so much more. Our vast array of programs and services help address challenges that arise from the trends that we are seeing – an aging population that requires a continuum of care; the increase in youth who are atrisk; the ever increasing cost of living that is impacting opportunities for gainful employment and creating difficulties for individuals and families to survive. At JFSA, we have much to be grateful for. Our ability to be a resource for the community rests heavily on the compassion, unwavering commitment and goodwill of our volunteers, donors, funders, staff and community partners. Whether it is providing support to strengthen existing programs, championing the development of new ones, helping to lay the foundation for growth, or ensuring we have the resources to carry out our mission. Each and every one of us fulfills a role, a need, a purpose, and we are all working towards something much greater than any of us alone. Over the past year, new opportunities for JFSA – such as providing social services at JHUB in Richmond, launching the Chill Chat Program for Youth Peer Support, expanding Home Support services to the Kerrisdale-Oakridge-Marpole area, creating a Mental Health Outreach Peer Support Group – has allowed us, and will 2 continue to allow us, to help more people. These initiatives all came to fruition due to the commitment and involvement of many. As the late anthropologist, Margaret Mead said, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” Our ability to be a resource for the community rests heavily on the compassion, unwavering commitment and goodwill of our volunteers, donors, funders, staff and community partners. And towards our future ... JFSA is in process of finalizing a three year strategic plan, that will guide us on the next phase of this ongoing journey. Over the last several months, Board and staff have been gathering information from stakeholder groups, conducting an environmental scan, reviewing our internal processes, identifying areas of priority, and developing our action plan. We thank everyone who participated in the process and look forward to completing the plan by the end of August. We will be sharing our vision and future directions with the community very soon. We hope you enjoy this edition of Family Matters which highlights and celebrates many achievements from the past year. Thank you for your on-going support. This past year, with the support of a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation, JFSA and the JCC launched a new initiative called Chill Chat, a Peer support program for Jewish youth. 12 Mentors aged 17-21 were recruited through King David High School, Hillel and UBC. They were trained in early 2014 by Alan Stamp, Clinical Director of JFSA and by Stephanie Rabin, Youth Coordinator of the JCC. Training covered topics such as confidentiality, active listening, understanding boundaries and knowing when to refer to other resources when there is a perceived elevation of risk. Mentors were assigned Mentees, 12-19 years of age, and to-date, eight Mentees have been beneficiaries of this program. Mentors and mentees meet for at least one hour every two weeks, during which they have the freedom to choose their own constructive activities. The pairs often go bowling, go for pizza, play sports or take a walk together. As the student-chosen name suggests, they spend time, relax, and share with each other. “The survey showed that kids are more likely to open up to other young people,” said Alan Stamp, Clinical Director of the Program. “Chill Chat is like Big Brothers, except it is peer-to-peer. There is no pressure, like friendship and has been a very rewarding time for both the Mentee and the Mentor.” Chill Chat resumes in the Fall. Seniors and their families had no choice but to pay out-of-pocket for care. Those unable to afford to pay had to rely on their families or go without. JFSA responded in 2003 by developing a sliding fee scale Home Support Program 6 that made our services accessible to all income levels for Jewish seniors (65+). Clients pay from $11 – $24. Over the years, funders have included Vancouver Coastal Health SMART Fund, The Phylliss and Irving Snider Foundation, The Diamond Foundation, The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and private donors. SENIORS Until 2013, our service was entirely within the Jewish Community. In 2013 we were encouraged to expand our successful social enterprise. We received a grant for expansion from the Vancity Foundation for supervisory staff and contribution towards fixed costs, and applied for and received a grant from the Kaatza Foundation, a local private family foundation. Their funds contributed to subsidy for low income clients. We chose the West End to pilot expansion. that offers a variety of services, including Home Support, to help seniors with simple day-to-day tasks so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. Our Home Support Program once again expanded to include service to this area in early 2014. The largest growth has been within the Jewish community. Each year, existing clients require more care. We provide clients as little as four hours a month, to Home Support today, employs 53 workers. We serve 192 seniors each month. We have grown an average of 10% a year in billable hours and expect this trend to continue into 2015. Due to our reputation, late last year, we were approached by United Way to become the lead agency for the Better at Home Program in the KerrisdaleOakridge–Marpole area. Funded by the government, managed by United Way, and offered through partnering agencies, Better at Home is a program 24/7 care. Seniors that needed weekly cleaning and grocery shopping weekly five years ago, may now need assistance with showering, meal preparation, accompaniment to appointments as well as cleaning help. 7 Home Support Today Total Seniors receiving Home Support services Jewish 80(42%) Non-Jewish 600 hours Jewish 2,710 hours Non-Jewish 112 (58%) Clients Monthly billable hours Due to the generosity of the Diamond Foundation, 1/3 of the Jewish clients receive subsidies In 2014, each month, we have delivered on average hours of service that will be almost hours per year from our 53 Home Support workers BREAKDOWN BY AREA HOURS PER MONTH East End (E. of False Creek) Kerrisdale Oakridge Shaunessy False Creek Kitsilano and Point Grey Richmond South Granville 8 Give More to JFSA Without Using Your Credit Card or Writing a Cheque Are you looking for a way to reduce your tax bill for 2014 and make a meaningful donation to JFSA, consider a gift of securities. Selling an appreciated stock or mutual fund will require you to pay tax on 50 per cent of the capital gain. However, donating the appreciated securities to charity as a gift-inkind, will help you eliminate this requirement. You will remove an unneeded asset from your portfolio, JFSA will issue you a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities, and most importantly you will feel satisfaction in seeing your donation put to good use! For more information or to obtain a JFSA securities transfer form, please contact the Development Office at 604.257.5151 or development@jfsa.ca www.jfsa.ca 9 JFSA SERVICES IN RICHMOND Stewart Cohen, Howard Harowitz, Larry Moss, Shawn Hawkins, and Richmond City Councillor, Linda McMcPhail at the launch event, June 11 The Impact of JHub on JFSA In March, JHub Richmond opened its doors to serve as a resource for community organizations to improve access of social services and programs offered to community members. Feedback from JFSA clients has been tremendously positive. our existing clients who need that extra support, to build our presence in the community, and it will open our doors to help those who may otherwise not have been able to make the trip to Vancouver.” “The senior clients that we have seen have expressed their gratitude to be able to go to the “Hub”. Parking is free, and accessible by bus. When you’re a senior, it makes a huge difference. Now 6-8 of our clients can also easily pick up their Food Bank parcels and vouchers at the location,” says Jacqui Sankoff, Seniors Outreach Counsellor. JFSA is privileged to work with other community partners, such as Kehila, RJDS, Jewish Seniors’ Alliance, and especially the Jewish Federation on this very important initiative. This project has been, from its inception about better serving our children, youth and families and in doing so, helping to ensure a vibrant Jewish community. Seniors couselling, information and referral services, is only one type of service that JFSA offers at this new location. Clinical counselling for individuals, couples and families, Resettlement counselling and referral for new comers and financial aid assessment are all available as well. JHub Steering Committee member, and JFSA Board member, Frieda Miller says “We are so fortunate to have this space available to us without incurring additional costs to the agency. Essentially the space is a satellite office for JFSA. It allows us to improve on the delivery of our programs and services to 10 JHub Richmond is generously funded by the Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign. Years later, with a positive memory of his experiences with JFSA, he reached out to the agency again during his time of need. In 2012, at the age of 46, Arnold had reached a low point his professional and personal life. Aware that he was going to be fired from his job, and facing a divorce from his wife of 7 years, he suffered from low self-esteem, and feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness. Arnold needed help, and he decided to make three critical decisions: he joined a men’s support group, he began seeing a therapist, and he contacted JFSA. Working with his employment counsellor at JFSA, Arnold developed a plan to address his impending firing. They prepared a proposal for Arnold’s boss, an exit strategy, whereby he would be allowed to resign, and to leave with dignity. His boss agreed, accepted the resignation letter, and agreed to provide an employment reference, as well. 11 Shortly after resigning, Arnold, with the help of his counsellor took the positive, necessary steps to reestablish his career. He said yes to every opportunity, and worked diligently to further his skillset. Arnold attended JFSA employment workshops, practiced and polished his interview skills, and conducted several informational interviews, which proved to be very useful. Arnold’s counsellor encouraged him to go after his “dream jobs,” jobs he would love, but didn’t feel confident enough to apply for. But he did apply, and was hired by a not-for-profit organization in Hawaii that focuses on early childhood development. Esther first came to JFSA, emotionally fragile, vulnerable and in need of care. Originally from Poland, she is a child survivor of the Holocaust. She immigrated to Canada in the 1960s. At the age of 84, she found herself living alone in Vancouver without a network of support. Her daughter, who lives in California, kept in touch with her frequently, but was not able to offer financial support and physical assistance. Isolated and in need of help, she had anxiety and depression. Concerned for her well-being, her friend referred her to JFSA. Her JFSA case worker, after assessing her condition, immediately placed her on the food voucher program to supplement her groceries and household needs. After several months, her case worker assisted her in completing her application for Article 2 Funding from the Claims Conference and her application was a success. Now monthly she receives a small amount of compensation that makes a meaningful difference to her monthly budget. His JFSA counsellor stayed in contact and helped Arnold stay focused and positive during a difficult first few months in Hawaii. Now, he earns well above state-average salary, bicycles to work, and has a comprehensive benefits package, too. After some dark years, Arnold is living his dream. Arnold Periodically, she continues to receive visits from her case worker, who assesses her needs and sees what can be done to help her manage her day to day activities and to remain comfortable in her home. Recently she even accessed JFSA’s Home Support services. “ I accomplished so much in a short period of time because I asked for help and you were there. Thank you for giving me hope, encouragement and for supporting me during such a difficult moment in my life.” 12 Esther Esther’s daughter says, “my mom is very touched and thank ful for the personal attention she has received and I am grateful to know that JFSA is her family when I cannot be there.” 13 VOLUNTEER IN THE SPOTLIGHT Paying it Forward: Sara Ciacci Sara Ciacci’s memories and association with JFSA goes back more than 80 years. It was the depression era before WW2 and like a number of families in our then small Jewish community, her mother and two sisters needed help. Sara recalls the first day a Social Worker, Theresa Blumberg, came to her home and found a reason to look in the food pantry. From then on, JFSA would be there to provide support. Miss Blumberg who made sure that I had proper shoes and school supplies. My only possession from childhood is a book she gave me on my 11th birthday inscribed “To my Dear Sarah”. The Children’s Treasure Book with beautiful colour plates would later be read by Sara’s sons, grandchildren and great granddaughter. Although few memories remain of those childhood days, Sara says, “I can still see the large galvanized steel container that arrived every Friday, along with butter and eggs, courtesy of the Jewish Family Service.” Sara’s adult association with the Jewish Food Bank started in 1984 as member of B’nai B’rith Women’s Centennial Chapter (now called Jewish Women InternationalB.C.). That year, Jean Cohen, z’l, then President of the Chapter, was helping a Jewish Senior. When she asked about why there was cat food in the cupboard, when “Theresa found time to visit me during the 18 months that I was in the Children’s Preventorium for tuberculosis. It was 14 ensure that children, individuals, families and seniors, are able to access nutritious food. Each year, due to her efforts, JWIBC raises $45,000 to purchase food. she didn’t have a cat, the senior explained that it was less expensive than Tuna. B’nai B’rith Women’s Centennial and JFSA started the Jewish Food Bank to help feed those who are hungry in the community. Today the Jewish Food Bank is co-funded by both organizations and many generous donors from the community. At JFSA’s AGM last December, Sara was the recipient of the Paula Lenga Award for exemplary volunteer service. The Paula Lenga Award is given to an ordinary person who does extraordinary things through volunteering at JFSA. JFSA and the community are grateful to have Sara as a friend and a champion for our community’s efforts to address the issue of poverty and alleviate hunger. For the last 30 years, Sara, has been spearheading JWI-BC’s fundraising efforts and the Jewish Food Bank has been her top priority. She has worked tirelessly to raise money, promoted Food Bank needs, and written grants, year after year to Do we have your email address?
