Nevers Cathedral • 6th-16th centuries You’ll be amazed by the rich historical legacy that has left its traces on Nevers, Town of Art and History. The chapels, churches, timber-framed houses and elegant private mansions that meet your eyes as you stroll through the town’s streets offer examples of every architectural style from the 11th century right up to the 20th. The most noteworthy monuments, the ones that popular imagination now associates with the town of Nevers, can all be found in the area known as ‘La Butte’. Find all the details on page 34 7 Following in the footsteps of Saint Bernadette The Cave Walk in the Footsteps of Saint Bernadette C4 A reconstitution of the Cave of Massabielle in Lourdes can be visited at the entrance to the sanctuary. This walking tour will lead you through the places where Saint Bernadette lived and where she spent her time praying and in contemplation. The Shop C4 Offers a selection of objects, postcards, DVDs and works about the life of Saint Bernadette. Musée Bernadette C4 (in the Espace Bernadette) The museum is designed as a journey of discovery to get to know Saint Bernadette through objects she used and her writings and words. Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes in 1844, so she was 14 when the Virgin Mary appeared before her at the Rocher de Massabielle. In order to fulfil her desire for a religious life, she went to Nevers in 1866 to join Saint Gildard, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity. There she lived a simple and ordinary life for 13 years, devoting herself entirely to serving God and others up until her death in 1879. Her intact body rests in a glass shrine in the chapel. The Shrine For more info... C4 Bernadette’s body was exhumed at the time of the canonical investigation. It was found to be intact and was put on display in the chapel. The Faïence Workshops Discover Nevers’ artisanal tradition of tin-glazed earthenware known as faïence. This exquisite craft, now integral to the town’s identity, was brought to Nevers towards the end of the 16th century. Local artisans created varied designs as fashions shifted and their firing techniques gave rise to a limited colour palette, including the famous ‘Nevers blue’ that became a hallmark of the town’s earthenware products. Modern-day visitors to Nevers can take a piece of this artistic heritage home with them, as local potteries still produce a wide choice of designs ranging from very classic to totally contemporary.
