Letter from the
Alumni Director
Dear Alumni and Friends,
We welcomed the newest alumni members
into the Alumni Association with the June 5, 2010 graduation of the
St. Vincent-St. Mary Class of 2010.
I know you will enjoy reading about all of their achievements,
successes and future endeavors. The STVM Alumni Association
officially welcomed the VM10 Class which consisted of 147
members during the Senior Farewell Mass on May 27th. This class of
147 students has 48 parents that are alumni of St. Mary, St. Vincent
or St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. It is interesting to note that the
incoming freshmen, Class of 2014, represents a total of 190 students
with 59 alumni parents.
The newly elected 2010-2011 Alumni Council Officers and
Committee members are planning an exciting year of events. We
hope that you can join us to rekindle old friendships and create some
new memories.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for October 1st and plan
to attend the Come Home for Homecoming Alumni Reunion
event (p. 2).We are proud to acknowledge over 109 years worth
of graduating classes and decided to honor all classes ending in ‘5
or ‘0, and started our listing at 1935! The evening includes a tour
of the school, refreshments, as well as entertainment by our very
own STVM Marching Band and Cheerleaders. If you can join us,
be sure to attend the 7:00 p.m. football game when STVM takes on
Garfield High School and sit in the bleacher section reserved for the
Come Home For Homecoming Alumni Reunion! Please RSVP by
September 15th so that we can better prepare for the number of
guests that will attend.
I am often asked the question, “When did our school start?” The
history and traditions of our school today is a reflection of the
wonderful academic heritage that began with St. Mary High School
and St. Vincent High School. As a recap, I have included a summary
of our history below:
St. Mary High School - Fall of 1897, the first Catholic high school
in Akron, Ohio opened its doors to students. The first class to
graduate from St. Mary High School was in 1901. In 75 years of
operation, St. Mary High School graduated 4,351 students.
St. Vincent High School – Opened in the fall of 1906, and the first
graduating class was in 1910. In 65 years of operation, St. Vincent
High School graduated 6,626 students.
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School – Fall of 1972, St. Vincent
and St. Mary High Schools became St. Vincent-St. Mary High
School. The first STVM graduating class was in 1973 and totaled
237 students. In 38 years of operation, STVM has graduated 6,570
students.
Congratulations VM10 and welcome to the Alumni Association!
Many blessings to you and your family,
Kathy Zehenni Holaday VM77

Kathy Holaday wishes to thank Lisa Pelfrey and
her son, Lane Pelfrey, a Senior at Wayne County
Schools Career Center in Smithville. Lisa and
Lane live in Rittman and Lane’s favorite hobby
is BMX biking. While biking in Rittman, Lane
found a VM01 ring alongside the road in the
grass. Lisa contacted Andy Jalwan, STVM
Athletic Director and returned the ring to
STVM.
After some research of the VM01 class list, Kathy Holaday, STVM
Alumni Director, contacted Shawn Ferguson VM01 (pictured above)
who confirmed that the STVM State Wrestling Championship ring
belonged to him! Shawn visited the STVM office to retrieve his ring
and was very appreciative of the effort that was taken to return his
VM State Champ ring! Shawn is a 2004 University of Akron graduate
with an International Buisness Degree. He is currently self-employed
and is a representative for Supplemental Insurance Benefits.

Schools who exemplify the spirit and values of Catholic Secondary

youth, service to school, service to community and professional
achievement. Since its inception in 1979, this award has been presented
to 101 outstanding alumni from our school(s).

Sr. V39 Day” not only at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, but throughout
the City of Akron by proclamation of Mayor Don Plusquellic. This special
presentation was a surprise for Bill Costigan, Sr., a graduate of St. Vincent
High School Class of 1939. He was visibly touched by the warm welcome he
received from STVM students, faculty, family, and friends as he entered the
STVM gymnasium. Bill Costigan, Sr. was even more surprised to see the Irish
community donning white commemorative t-shirts emblazoned with his
picture and the name and date of the occasion.
During the recognition ceremony, Bill Costigan, Sr. learned that the former
Costigan building at the corner of W. Market and N. Maple streets has been
turned into a state-of-the-art baseball and softball training facility named in
his honor. Following the ceremony, all invited guests enjoyed refreshments
and received tours of the newly dedicated Bill Costigan, Sr. V39 STVM
Baseball and Softball Training Facility. Joanne Zaratsian, STVM Director of
Major Gifts, noted, “Bill Costigan, Sr. and his family truly embody the rich
tradition that STVM is known for. It was truly an honor to host this event.”
Mary Breiding VM84 teaches at an inner city Akron Public School,
McEbright Elementary. Many of her students live with grandparents or in
foster care. Eight years ago, Mary inadvertently started an adopt-a-family
program when she bought gifts for one family that experienced unexpected
financial challenges at Christmas time.
This past year the McEbright Elementary Adopt-a-Family program,
headed by Mary Breiding, was able to support 40 students and their 17
families. Mary has a number of “anonymous” volunteers, known as the “Santa
helpers,” which include many Breiding family members, St Vincent-St. Mary
alumni, friends and businesses.
Mary graciously accepts assistance from many sources in order to help
her students. As a result, her students are able to experience the miracle and
wonder of Santa on Christmas morning, no matter their family circumstance,
due to the generosity of the volunteers. It is a lovely way to experience the
true spirit of Christmas – generosity that makes such a concrete difference
in the lives of the McEbright students and their families. It truly serves as an
inspiration to Mary and encourages her to do more for her students.

Troy Portis VM06 graduated
from Walsh University and
reflects on his high school
experience ….
As a STVM graduate I
was spiritually, mentally, and
emotionally prepared to attend
Walsh University. The qualities
that our school possesses gave
me the confidence to enter
college and immediately take
on a leadership role while
maintaining an above average
grade point. STVM created
a foundation for me that is
embedded in the teachings
of our Lord with the goal to
educate students so that each
individual can reach his/her
potential.
I was extremely prepared
for college after attending
STVM and I cannot imagine
receiving an education from any
other high school. The family
atmosphere and loving faculty
members will always hold a
special place in my heart!

Marilyn Snyder Dickel M60 reports...
St. Mary’s Class of 1960 joined together to celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of their graduation day from St. Mary High School
at a class Mass held on June 5, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. The Mass was
concelebrated by Father Burba and classmate Father Sam Ciccolini.
M60 Classmates participated in the liturgy: servers — George Huffman
and Victor Estafen, readers — Dolores Estafen Ohmer and Larry
Lauter, petitions — written by Pat Nash Butke and read by Penny
Sabolesky Roush.
After the Mass most of us went on a tour of the school. This
brought back many memories. We then went to Spaghetti Warehouse.
The rest of our reunion will be held at Sheraton Suites on
September 24th and 25th.
If you have not received the information, call Marilyn at 330-8254683.
Lynne Wall Peters M65 reports…
The St. Mary Class of 1965 had their 45th reunion the weekend of
May 21st and 22nd. The weekend started on Friday with the 5:30
p.m. Mass. We invited all alumni of St. Mary High School since the
church was scheduled to close in June. We had an overwhelming turn
out of around 300 people. It was gratifying to see how many of the
graduates still hold a place in their hearts for St. Mary Church. All of
the graduates that attended were invited to join our class on the front
steps of the church for a group picture. It was quite an effort to get
everyone gathered. Special thank you to Patty Dyer Burdon M69 for
her efforts in this photo opportunity!
Mass and photo session were followed by an informal tour of the
school and refreshments in the cafeteria. With the help of the STVM
Alumni Office we had various class pictures to display that everyone
enjoyed. The St. Mary alumni that attended our special reunion event
included graduates from 1940 -1972. It was a wonderful evening.
Saturday night was the dinner/dance for our classmates at
Thomastown Party Center. The food was great, the DJ engaging and
everyone got up to dance, proving that the Class of 1965 still has it!
We still meet monthly on various Saturdays for breakfast at the
Waterloo. For more information contact Lynne Wall Peters 330-4942649 or Rosie Jordan Federico 330-434-8707.

Dear Alumni and Friends,
When I attended St. Vincent–St. Mary High School back in the
late 70’s, I remember seeing so many alumni here at the school.
Student events, football games, basketball games, plays, musicals,
and many family oriented fundraisers. Now as I return as the
Chief Operating Officer of St. Vincent–St. Mary High School
thirty-four years later, I see that the same tradition that we were
very fortunate to be part of in the 70’s, is still strong. However the alumni participation
seems to be declining and I ask myself every day, what can we do to get our wonderful
alumni involved again?
St. Vincent–St. Mary High School has an impressive track record of grooming young
boys and girls into confident, well-educated, and successful men and women. Many of us
would not be where we are today if it were not for the alumni who were a constant and
active part of our high school experience. It is heartwarming to see that many of the same
alumni that provided us the means for success back in the 70’s, continue to be the same
alumni providing the support needed today.
There are many ways to provide support; financial support being the first and
foremost area — something that all private schools will need for years to come. In
addition, there are many areas and facets to STVM that would gladly welcome your
time and talents — various academic and extracurricular organizations, parent groups,
alumni groups — the list is endless.
If you have been blessed with a rewarding career, and you have the means to support
our school financially, then please help as much as you can. The true cost of education
is approximately 16% higher than the actual tuition charged. Today’s economy has left
many of our families struggling to make tuition payments, and some may be faced
with having to withdraw a son or daughter from STVM. If you can help keep a student
enrolled at STVM, you will make a positive and lasting impact on their life.
If you would like additional information, as to how you can help these families,
please call me at the school, and I will be happy to explain our Irish Academic Partner
(IAP) program with you.
Also, if you haven’t been to the school in recent years, please call us to schedule a
tour. We would love to show you what’s new at STVM.
Planning for the future
God Bless,
Thomas M. Carone
Chief Operating Officer

Pat hart v68 elected
stvm executive board chairman
We welcome Pat Hart V68 as the newly-elected
Chair of the STVM Executive Board. Pat has served
on the Executive Board since December 2008. Pat graduated from St. Vincent High School in
1968 and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Political Science from The University of Akron four
years later. He earned his law degree from The University of Akron
School of Law in 1975. Following law school, Pat joined the Akron Prosecutor’s Office in
1976 and went into the private practice of law in 1980. Pat is a partner
with the law firm, The Scanlon Group Co., L.P.A.
Over the years, Pat has been active in professional and community
service organizations. In years past, he has served on the Boards of
Catholic Social Services, West Akron Baseball League and the Akron
Bar Association. He is a past president of the Summit County Trial
Lawyers Association. He presently serves as Chair of the Board of
Akron CYO and Community Services.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to serve our school and be involved in
an indirect way in the educating of our students during these exciting,
informative years. The quality, energy and enthusiasm of our faculty
and staff is very impressive. Together with the help of the Board
and our alumni, the STVM community has a very bright future,”
commented Pat.

classes meet the 2010 challenge
Approximately $190,000 raised!
An all out effort was put forth from our alumni for the
2010 Green & Gold Annual Appeal! The Development
Office is grateful to all the alumni and friends who
volunteered their time to help us garner support for
this year’s important appeal. Representatives from the
past 62 years came into the school during the months of
March and April to sign and post script letters challenging
their classmates to collectively contribute towards an
$8,000 tuition. Many people used this opportunity to include reunion
information and other class news with the mailing.
Calling out to these class representatives has been gratifying. I have
found they are more than willing to help us. Their assistance and
encouragement in challenging their classmates has proven to be an
invaluable asset! Through their efforts, the Green & Gold 2010 Annual
Appeal increased the Alumni giving. Be sure to look for the class
giving lists in the next Annual Giving Report! Thank you!
This tradition is only going to get bigger and better each year. Next
year! Same time! Same Place!
God bless,

Speaker series Featured
Dru joyce, curtis wilson vm83
When Dru Joyce was asked to
take over the head coaching duties
at STVM, he accepted and was
determined to instill seven core
values in his players.
Joyce quotes STVM’s mission
statement, saying it helped him
discover his role in life. “The first
Joanne Zaratsian, Dru Joyce and Dave
time I read that statement back in
Rathz at February Speaker Series
2000, the words really resonated
with me because I believe that’s my purpose, to coach the inner and
outer man,” Joyce said.
During the February Speaker Series, Joyce spoke of the seven core
values of humility, discipline, unity, servitude, integrity, thankfulness,
and passion.
“The team is beginning to understand that it’s about more than the
individual, and that life and our basketball program began before them
and will continue long after them,” Joyce remarked.
Nick Shook VM10, Excerpted from Leprechaun Gold, March 2010 Issue
Curtis Wilson VM83 addressed the
April 30th Speaker Series Meeting.
Nearly 100 invited guests, seniors,
juniors and many teachers filled
the gymnasium where Curtis’
retired No. 10 basketball jersey
now hangs.
Curtis’ speech touched on the
importance of family, friendships,
building relationships and
Curtis Wilson VM83 and his retired
community. He told the students,
jersey #10
“I hope to inspire you to greater
heights and help you envision or get more focused on your future
because at the end of the day, you have to own it at an individual
level.”
Curtis explained how his parents prepared him for life and how
important it is to do your best to excel at every endeavor in this life.
Curtis learned from his parents “it’s not how you start, but how you
finish, and how will you respond and react when the world knocks you
down.”
He recalled his high school days at St. Vincent-St. Mary, mentioning
his former teachers, playing basketball, and making friends with
classmate Mark Paxton. Many of those teachers, his former basketball
coach Joe Suboticki, and Mark Paxton attended the meeting. Many
members of the Wilson family also attended, among them his mother
Barbara, wife Deborah and his son and daughter.
Curtis resides with his family in Montclair, New Jersey, and is the
Vice President & General Manager, National Client Group, American
Express Company – Merchant Services Americas, where he has
worked for the past 20 years.

The Jim Kelly Memorial Scholarship Reverse Raffle – Silent Auction
was held at Guy’s Party Centre on May 20, 2010. It truly was an
“Elegant Evening of Dining and Bonne Chance.” Once again, this
annual event was sold out. Jerry Kelly and her volunteers worked
tirelessly to present another successful raffle in memory of her
husband, Jim Kelly V50.
To date, 112 incoming freshman have received the Jim Kelly
Memorial Scholarship. Jerry Kelly is always quick to point out to her
guests that it is not just ‘her’ scholarship. Every one who supports the
Jim Kelly Memorial Reverse Raffle has played an important role and
made the difference in the lives of the scholarship recipients.

Shamrock Society Paves the way
Members of the Shamrock Society play an
integral role in the St. Vincent-St. Mary High
School community. These donors continue
to remember us year after year. And, they are
making a difference with their ongoing support.
After working in Development for the past 11
years, I am still amazed by the overwhelming
response and dedication from our members.
Members receive exclusive Shamrock Society Newsletters and
e-mail correspondence with the most up to date information regarding
activities, events and accomplishments throughout the year. They also
receive an official donor recognition key for free admittance for two
to all theater and band performances and athletic events held on the
St. Vincent-St. Mary campus.
This listing represents Shamrock Society donors who made
contributions during the past fiscal year. The members of this
distinguished group donated $1,000 or more annually to our school in
Shamrock
Society
support of general operating, tuition
assistance, endowment, capital campaign
and scholarships.
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School gratefully
recognizes the following donors for their generosity.
I look forward to greeting our members on

their new scholarship. They are sporting spirit gear from the universities they will attend
this fall
class of 2010 leave lasting legacy
When the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Class of 2010 graduated
on June 5th at E.J. Thomas Hall they had every reason to be proud.
The 147 members of the STVM Class of 2010 received a highly
impressive $8.8 Million in scholarship and grant offers with over 14%
of the students receiving full scholarships. From the Class of 2010,
99% of the students will attend college and 94% were accepted at their
first choice college. Aside from successfully completing four years of
the challenging college preparatory curriculum, sitting A.P. Exams,
and taking finals, the STVM Class of 2010 also found time in May to
put the finishing touches on their class gift.
The senior class gift is a long standing tradition at STVM according
to Joanne Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts. In addition to an
engraved brick in the Walk of Champions at the new Cosgrove Center
which was dedicated at the beginning of their senior year, the STVM
Class of 2010 has even bigger plans for a lasting gift to their alma
mater and future students. The STVM Class of 2010 has established
a scholarship fund to benefit future students at STVM. The members
of this class are well aware that tuition is always increasing and that
many members of their class were able to attend STVM through the
generosity of scholarship donors. As class representatives, Natasha
Kanakkanatt and Michael Ringer noted, “We wanted to establish a
permanent legacy at STVM by giving back and showing our gratitude
to those who went before us!”

In February 2010, Karen Murray, STVM Past Parent and Executive
Director of the Robert O. and Annamae Orr Family Foundation,
approached STVM about establishing a scholarship in honor and
memory of Bob and Annamae Gifford Orr, alumni from the
St. Vincent High School Class of 1939. The Orr Family Foundation
has long provided monetary support to organizations that advance
the quality of life in Summit and Stark counties. Through this new
scholarship the foundation was excited to honor the legacy of Bob
and Annamae Orr as alumni while helping to defray the cost of
tuition for current STVM students. Six inaugural scholarships were
award in early May for the 2010-2011 academic year.

annual event honors donors and Student recipients
On May 10, 2010 the Annual Family & Memorial Scholarship
Reception was held at STVM. The evening dinner reception which
featured a presentation by the STVM Show Choir was attended
by 350 guests including donors, scholarship recipients, and their
families. Through this event the donors had the opportunity to
meet their recipients and the students had a personal opportunity
to thank the donors. Both now and in the future, our students have
the opportunity to further share in this legacy through scholarship
donations. Out of gratitude to the scholarship donors, the student
recipients and their parents made honor and memorial donations
to the STVM Endowment General Trust totaling $1,387.92. It was a
memorable evening for the scholarship benefactors and the students.
Following brief remarks by Endowment Board Member Susie Gaebel
Wallace VM91, Joanne Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts, expressed
her gratitude to the scholarship donors and challenged the students
to remember what these donors have done to impact their lives and
consider giving back to STVM in the future through a scholarship
themselves. Joanne also announced the exciting news that the STVM
Class of 2010 will honor their alma mater through the establishment
of a scholarship. Our community is blessed to have such a strong
tradition!

continuing a father’s tradition
As STVM celebrates the 25th Silver Anniversary of Showcase on
October 23, 2010, we will also honor the memory of Ralph L. and
Florence Bernard in a new and special way. Last year, Ralph Bernard,
Sr. passed away. We are pleased to announce that Ralph Bernard,
Jr. will continue his parents’ legacy and provide sponsorship for the
$25,000.00 Fund-a-Scholar oral auction item. This annual auction
item raises key funds for scholarships and tuition assistance. Although
STVM lost a wonderful friend and benefactor in Ralph Bernard, Sr.,
the relationship will continue to develop through the Bernard family’s
ongoing dedication and support of Catholic education.

Top honor
The 62nd annual State Science Day was held on Saturday, May 8,
2010 at the French Field House at The Ohio State University. Over
1000 students participated from all over Ohio. Nine students from
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School were invited to participate and
they together, as a team, took home the top honor, the Harold C.
Shaw Outstanding School Award. In order to receive this award 7
out of the 9 students had to receive the top rating of superior and
no one could receive a rating of good and that is exactly what they
did. Congratulations go out to all members of the team: Hannah
Comeriato, John Friess, Renee Horn, Kindelan Huber, Jon Stone,
Devin Sutter, Abby Tanner, Vincenzo Volpe and Olivia Walter. Each
and every one of these students put so much time and effort into
executing their project and their presentations; because of that hard
work and perseverance they were able to achieve great things. Not
only did they win the outstanding school award, but they also brought
home many individual sponsored awards and scholarships.

STVM’s Rocket Team Charlie whose members include Greg Sprungle,
Emily Tomon, PJ Morley, Kate Donahue, and Devin Sutter qualified
for the Team America Rocket Challenge National Finals at Great
Meadow in The Plains, Virginia on May 15, 2010.
All of STVM’s rocket teams worked very hard since last September
designing, building and flying rockets in an effort to reach the national
finals competition. Two other teams, Team Bravo and Team Echo
came very close to qualifying and missed being entered into the
finals by a slim margin. STVM is very proud of the hard work and
dedication these students displayed throughout the year and they are
great examples of our wonderful student body! Go Irish!!

dormant on a disc for over 14
years before he dusted it off
and downloaded the contents
once again.
The story has now relocated
to a college campus where
two members of the football
team die under mysterious
circumstances. The drama and
romance of the original story
that took place in a high school
has been replaced by trips back
and forth between the 1880s and
2009 and 2010.
If you could go through a
ceremony that would let you live
forever on this earth, would you
do it? Would it make you sad to
watch the current generation
grow old and pass away? Would
you grow weary of such an
existence?
Pepper the story with good
vs. evil, a mysterious sacred
book called the Kuhduush,
a secret fraternity within a
fraternity, some vampire-like
beings who can suck the life
out of the Immortali on certain
nights of the year when the
meteor showers flash across the
heavens, and you have some
good, fictional summer reading.
The book can be ordered
on-line at iuniverse.com; and
amazon.com. If you would
like an autographed copy, you
can purchase one directly at
St. Vincent-St. Mary. A portion
of the proceeds go to the
student tuition fund. E-mail the
author at sallison@stvm if you’d
like to drop by to pick up a copy
once school begins. Who knows,
you might even find your name
in the story!

farewell, graduates!
welcome, Freshmen!
No sooner do we say goodbye to the Class of
2010, than we welcome our incoming freshman
Class of 2014. It is with great confidence that we
watch our graduating seniors begin their new and
separate life journeys. As a class, their academic
achievements have been outstanding and each

spiritually, for whatever lies ahead. As members
of the Class of 2010 close one chapter of their lives and open another,
they join the ranks of the more than 17,000 distinguished St.
Vincent-St. Mary alumni who have preceded them.
We eagerly anticipate getting to know the newest members of our
St. Vincent–St. Mary family — the Class of 2014. These freshmen are
about to become a part of a long tradition of greatness, although they
have already distinguished themselves on their own merit. Nineteen
were awarded Irish Academic Scholarships and 28 earned Irish
Opportunity Scholarships based on character, leadership, and service.
Fifty-six received Family and/or Memorial scholarships. Sixty-three
of these freshmen have siblings attending St. Vincent-St. Mary and 59
have parents who are alumni.
All of us are justifiably proud of STVM and our incoming
freshmen have made an excellent decision to become part of our
St. Vincent-St. Mary Family. The administration, faculty, and staff
extend our Irish hospitality and heartily welcome the Class of 2014!
STVM WINS ReD cross bloodmobile
CHALLENGE to save lives
The Future Medics sponsored a second Red Cross Bloodmobile
this year. Due to the constant need for blood and an opportunity for STVM to receive scholarship money, we challenged Hoban to see who
could collect the most blood on a Saturday in the spring.
WE WON… WE BEAT HOBAN!!!!!!!!
Thank you to the students, parents and alumni that saved lives by
donating. A special thank you to the alumni association members who
baked cookies for the event. Food always is a good incentive!

Fighting irish Athletics year in review 2009-2010
FALL
Football: This year’s varsity
football team finished with
a record of 6-5 and returned
to state playoff competition.
Unfortunately, the team’s
season ended in the OHSAA
regional quarterfinal against
Poland Seminary High School.
Highlights from this season
included a 14-10 victory over
rival Archbishop Hoban. The
annual game was played at
the brand new Infocision
Stadium on the campus of
The University of Akron. The
attendance for the game was
close to 12,000 people. It was the
first high school football game
ever played at the new facility.
The team this year was led by
captains: seniors Billy Harmon
and Brian Foster and juniors
Doran Grant and Mark Murphy.
During the season this year
former Fighting Irish coach John
Cistone was honored at halftime
of the September 4th game
versus Akron North.
Cross Country: The
cross country team had a
championship season this fall.
The girls team composed of
seniors Molly Miloscia and
Emily Tomei; juniors Maria
Arnone and Anna Mion;
sophomores Annie Davis and
Tessa Weigand; and freshman
Marissa Rosetti, won the
Division II OHSAA State
Championship. This was only
the second state appearance
for the girls team who finished
in seventh place last year. The
girls raised their new state
championship banner in the
gym this winter. The boys
team also had an excellent year.
The team made their second
straight state championship
appearance. The team finished
seventh this year behind a strong
effort from seniors Landon
Davis, Greg Gannon, and Brian
Raglow; juniors Jacob Swords
and Ian Walsh; sophomore
Patrick O’Brien; and freshman
Mick Iacofano. Based on this
season’s results, Head Coach
Dan Lancianese was also named
Coach of the Year by the
Cleveland Plain Dealer.
district tournament this year.
The other members of the team
included Jay Dean, Hakmut
Hero, Tyler Rice, Chris Domer,
and Alex McGrew.
Boys Soccer: The boys soccer
team was coming off of a great
season where they finished in
the OHSAA regional semi-final
game. Despite graduating a lot
of great players from that team,
this season the boys advanced
to the district semi-final match.
In that game the team lost
a heartbreaker in overtime
to rival Archbishop Hoban.
The team this year was led by
seniors Mitch Tomazic, Diego
Hildebrandt, and John Heising.
The most valuable player award
this year was presented to
junior Chris Motley. Lastly, Joe
Demboski and Antonio Manfut
won the best defensive and
offensive players respectively.
Girls Golf: The girls golf team
this year was led by first year
Head Coach Chris Minear. This
is the third year girls golf has
been offered as a varsity sport
at STVM and each year the
program has grown. This year
the team competed in the newly
formed Greater Akron Girls
Golf Conference. This was the
first year for this conference and
the team won the conference
championship. Also, freshman
Michelle Noethen was the golfer
of the year in the conference. In
the state tournament, the entire
team qualified for the district
championships. The captain’s
award this season was presented
to senior Emily Tomon.
Girls Soccer: The girls soccer
team had an outstanding
season under first year Head
Coach, Rob Young. The team
finished with a 15-3-3 record
and advanced to the OHSAA
regional semi-final. In that
game the team lost a very tough
match to St. Mary Memorial, 2-1
in overtime. The team this year
was led by three great captains:
senior Erica Hutson, junior
Miranda Yeaton, and sophomore
Becca Bridenthal.
Volleyball: The volleyball team
this year finished with a record
of 11-12. The team was led by
captains Ryanne Oldham, Kelsey
Swords, and Rachel Wilson.
The MVP was presented to
Kelsey Swords. Sophomore
Corie Nischt was named the
best offensive player, and junior
Meghan Weber earned the most
improved player award.
Girls Tennis: The girls tennis
program finished with a 12-7
record this year. Senior Caroline
Bennett, Junior Taylor Wedlake,
and Sophomore Rose Klein each
qualified for the OHSAA district
semi-final. The other captains
this year were Erica Bennett and
Halle Marchetta.
Boys Golf: The boys golf team
this year was led by senior
captain Jack Uecker. The team
was guided by second year Head
Coach Dante D’Andrea. The
entire team qualified for the
WINTER
Girls Basketball: The girls
basketball team finished with a
record of 12-9. The team had
big wins over Cleveland Heights,
Shaker Heights, and Massillon
Jackson. This year’s team was
led by seniors Jen Murray,
Ryanne Oldham, and Katie
Brunn.
Boys Basketball: The boys
basketball team started the year
off by raising their 2009 state
championship banner in the
gym. Heading into a season
of high expectations the team
finished with a record of 17-7.
The team’s season ended in

the regional final with a loss
to Benedictine. The squad had
big wins this year over Walsh
Jesuit, Archbishop Hoban and
Mansfield Senior. The district
championship game vs. Buchtel
High School was played at
Canton Fieldhouse in front of
a crowd of 4500 people. The
team this year was led by seniors
Kameron Rubin, Jack Uecker,
Jacob Baker, and Dominique
Mitchell.
Wrestling: It was a very
successful year for the wrestling
program. STVM freshman,
Michael Rix, earned a fourth
place finish in the state
tournament. Junior Ray Stone
also qualified in the 215 weight
class. Ray finished the year with
42 victories and 37 of those
came by pin. Senior Carlos Lugo
also represented the school as
an alternate in the heavyweight
division. At the regional
tournament the team qualified
six individuals.
Boys and Girls Bowling: The
bowlers wrapped up a successful
season as well. The boys team
struggled this year due to a lack
of participation but made the
most of the talent they had.
The girls team, under second
year Head Coach Ron Winer,
performed very well. The team
qualified one individual, senior
Rachel Dedinsky, to the state
tournament. Rachel finished
40th out of a field of 138
bowlers.
SPRING
Baseball: Second year Head
Coach Anthony Boarman led
the Irish baseball program this
year. During the off-season the
baseball and softball programs
converted the old Costigan
Furniture Showroom on
Market Street into an indoor
hitting facility. Having a place to
practice indoors paid off greatly
this year. The baseball team
finished 8-16 and defeated Akron
Softball: The 2009 softball team
was very successful this year.
The team defeated CVCA in
the first round of the OHSAA
playoffs before losing in the
second round to Tallmadge in a
tough 1-0 game. The squad this
year was led by seniors Rachel
Dedinsky, Stasia Hoffman, and
Jenna Boyle. The most improved
player award was presented to
Meghan Weber.
Boys Tennis: The boys tennis
team this year was under the
direction of first year Head
Coach Donovan Avery. The
team was very young this year
as four freshmen competed
in varsity matches. The squad
made a lot of progress and was
led by MVP Trevor Chopko.
The other leaders on the team
were seniors Diego and Alfredo
Hildebrandt.
Track and Field: The STVM
track and field team started the
state championship weekend off
on the right note by bringing
home the state championship
in the girls 4x800M relay.
The team of senior Emily
Tomei, sophomore Sam Kirk,
sophomore Tessa Weigand, and
junior Maria Arnone crossed
the finish line in 9:17.15. On
the second day of competition,
junior Doran Grant brought
home the second state
championship of the weekend
by finishing in first place in
the 110M hurdles in a time of
:14.31. Senior Erica Hutson also
qualified in four championship
events and her weekend was
highlighted by a state runner-up
finish in the girls 400M dash in a
time of :55.27. In the boys 800M
run, junior Jacob Swords placed
fourth with a time of 1:54.71.
On the first day of competition
the boys 4x800M relay team
of sophomore Pat O’Brien,
sophomore Sean Poholski,
junior Ian Walsh, and junior
Jacob Swords finished in 4th
place with a time of 8:02.01
Overall, the girls team finished
in 4th place of 71 teams by
scoring a total of 26 points. The
boys finished in 8th place of 70
teams by scoring a total of 22
points. Congratulations to all
the athletes and Head Coach
Dan Lancianese on a successful
season!

website spotlights STVM SPORTS
Twenty-eight years after serving as editor of the Leprechaun Gold,
St. Vincent-St. Mary alumna, Angie Spreitzer Charles VM82 returned
to the school as President of a new online sports reporting venture.
Angie made a visit in May to present the Akron Touchdown Club
All-Star Awards to several students and a special Athlete of the Week
Award to senior, Dominique Mitchell. Her company, SportsInk.com,
partnered with the Akron Touchdown Club in honoring top local
athletes.
Angie said she and several partners founded SportsInk.com last
August to provide coverage to an underserved market. “It’s gotten
too expensive and difficult for print media to be able to provide
comprehensive coverage of high school sports,” she said. “At the same
time, reading habits have changed, with more people going online
to read news, especially sports news. People want the immediacy of
the Internet and the ability to view stories with photos, audio files
and videos. We’re excited to be part of this evolution in the media
industry.”
The site covers 13 sports for St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
The main STVM page can be found at: http://www.sportsink.com/
