Volume 18 Issue 1 January 2016 Friends of Millis’ Council on Aging President: Bryan Riley Vice President: Mary Russo Secretary: Everard Huggan Treasurer: Brooks Corl Member: Steve Howie Member: Camille Saitta If you want your voice heard: Senator Elizabeth Warren (202) 224-4543 Senator Edward Markey (202) 224-2742 Millis Council on Aging 900 Main Street Millis, MA. 02054 508-376-7051 Council on Aging (508) 376-7051 Director: Patty Kayo Chairperson: Mary Skilling Vice Chair: Open 2nd Vice Chair : Open Secretary: Helen Daly HESSCO Representative: Maria Neville Member: Kaplan Hasanoglu Member: William Brown Honorary Member: Ellinor Harkins The Millis Council on Aging is committed to maintaining the highest level of independence with older individuals by developing and coordinating community care, reducing isolation and educating and improving the overall understanding of various community-based services. The Council also provides transportation for the elderly and disabled, a Supportive Day Program for those who are isolated or experiencing mild confusion/dementia, and a outreach program for those who are in need of information or referrals. We also house the Meals on Wheels Program. The Center is an intake site for the States Fuel Assistance Program and The Millis Fund and acts as a liaison to many state and federal programs. Discovery of Art The Great Artists series of DVDs from Kultur Films chronicles the lives, times, and works of the artists whose genius has captivated the art world for generations. Informative and entertaining, the series highlights important events in each artist's life, explores their stylistic trademarks, and provides detailed explanations of their techniques. Each DVD includes expert commentary and analyses from leading authorities, art historians, and scholars, along with new location footage and atmospheric re-creations. Please join us on Friday, January 15th at 10:30 to look at Leonardo Da Vinci’s greatest works and Friday, January 29th at 10:30 to study Michelangelo’s great accomplishments. Snacks will be provided. Please reserve your spot so we may plan accordingly. Pizza and Ice Cream Social Winter is a time when we tend to isolate. The cold days makes it easy for us to stay indoors and have little to no contact with others. Feelings of loneliness and isolation can lead to serious consequences for senior health. Regardless of the causes of isolation, the consequences can be alarming and even harmful. Even perceived social isolation – the feeling that you are lonely – is a struggle for many people. Please come down to the Center and reach out to us. Transportation IS available. We will be serving pizza on Friday, January 15th and 29th at 12:00. We will follow that up with make your own ice cream sundaes with all the fixings. Come on down. I hear the pizza is fabulous! Inclement Weather Policy In the event that Millis schools are cancelled due to inclement weather, Council on Aging transportation will also be cancelled. Transportation may also be cancelled if the driver judges the conditions to be too hazardous. Please be advised that the monthly minutes of the Council on Aging board meetings are now available at the Center. We will have them posted in room 21 and as always, on-line on the Town’s website under Minutes and Agendas and at the Clerks office. Please become educated in what the board is trying to accomplish by keeping yourself informed. Any and all suggestions and comments are welcomed. Please feel free to attend any of the boards meetings. They meet the second Friday of the month at 9:00. Hope to see you there! Openings Supportive Day Group This is a specifically designed program for elders or disabled individuals who are suffering from mild to moderate cognitive difficulties or who cannot stay at home alone during the day. We strive to enrich the lives of each senior by being a part of the supportive team that allows them to remain healthy, happy and independent. The Group at the Millis Senior Center has a wonderful environment and atmosphere as it is a small group setting. We can enrich the lives of seniors living alone, with care-taking spouses needing respite, or seniors living with active families. Everyone enjoys our memory enhancement program, chair exercises, board games, trivia, bingo, crafts, cards, music, singing, movies, laughter and more. We benefit seniors who are depressed or lonely and missing a sense of community. It’s important to be active to remain your healthiest both mentally and physically. We value our families but it’s wonderful to have friends your own age with similar life experiences. We give seniors a reason to get up smiling in the morning.
