The Beloved Disciple
Long into the night we talked. Our minds were
in turmoil. What should we do now? Back
and forth our anxious conversation volleyed.
We had believed that Jesus of Nazareth was the
promised Messiah. We had been his disciples,
journeying with him everywhere, counting on
him to inaugurate the Kingdom of God. Now
he was discredited, dead, cursed by being hung
on a tree. All our hopes were shattered. It was
as though our lives had come to a complete
halt. Exhausted, one by one we finally fell
asleep where we sat.
As dawn was breaking a few hours
later, someone pounded on the
door. At first we feared the temple
police had dis-covered us. Our
hearts stopped. But then we heard
a woman’s voice. Simon Peter
quickly opened the door. It was
Mary of Magdala. She was almost
out of breath. At first we could not
make out what she was trying to
tell us, but finally we caught the
gist of it.
Something had
happened at Jesus’ tomb. The big
round stone that sealed it had been
rolled aside. What now? Simon
Peter and I exchanged looks.
Without further ado we started running toward
the tomb.
Issue #123
Being younger, I outran Simon Peter and got to
the tomb first. Since he was our leader, however, I waited for him to catch up before I
dared enter. While I waited, I peered into the
shadowy tomb. Jesus’ body was indeed gone!
After Simon Peter caught up with me and
entered the tomb, I followed. The linen shroud
that had covered the body was in one place and
the face cloth was in another spot, neatly
folded. Body-snatchers would not have bothered to do that! I had the sudden conviction that
Jesus himself had folded it. JESUS WAS
ALIVE!
Not knowing what else to do, Simon Peter and
I headed back to the upper
room. He was dumbfounded
and didn’t know what to think.
My mind was in a whirl, with
too much to think about.
There was no doubt that Jesus
had died. I had been at the
cross. I had seen him die.
The soldiers, who had a lot of
experience crucifying people,
knew he was dead and didn’t
bother to break his legs so he
would be unable to breathe.
Yet now I was suddenly
convinced that he was alive.
How could this be? It was impossible, yet
somehow I knew that it must be true.

headed over to the Hoomaluhia
Botanical Gardens, the other
side of the island. On April 11,
the day blest us with beautiful
weather to honor Fr. Michael’s
91st birthday. A long walk
down winding paths to the
shelter by the lake provided
laughter, time for snacks and
rest. Praying outdoors always is
a blessing. A gift of a beautiful
cake awaited us when we
arrived home.
❑ Liturgical Update: Holy Week
days of prayer and special
liturgies ushered us into the
awesome celebration of Jesus’
resurrection, highlighted with
the songs of alleluias and
accounts of the events of Jesus’
appearances to chosen women
and
disciples. The readings
that follow, lead us into the
feasts of the Ascension of Jesus
and Pentecost. Through the
liturgy we are united with
God’s people around the world.
In this awareness of how united
we are in the body of Christ,
the needs of the nations of the
world remind us to pray for
God’s suffering children.
❑ Construction Update: The
guys from Resurrection of the
Lord parish (our 1st Saturday
workday crew) have been hard
at it and recently completed a
multi-month project of
cleaning, prepping, priming
and painting all of the steel
support posts and braces under
our three “Force 10” residence
buildings. We used a special
two-part epoxy paint so we
expect their efforts to hold up
for quite a few years. We are
very appreciative of their work.
