C ali, Colombia has long been known as the World Salsa Capital. Unfortunately, many salsa dancers and fanatics across the world have not been made aware of this fact which has been agreed upon by the likes of Papo Lucca, pianist leader and director of the Puerto Rican salsa orchestra, La Sonora Ponceña, as well as other legends such as Cheo Feliciano. The love of the musicians for this city is reflected by the fact that Cali has had more salsa songs dedicated to it than any other place on earth. These dedications have come not only from local bands, but also the likes of Oscar D’leon, Bobby Valentin, Conjunto Clasico, La Sonora Ponceña, La Sonora Matancera, Los Van Van, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz and many more! Many of the above musicians pay respect to Cali, because during periods of time when the Carribean salsa countries were inundated with merengue and Salsa Romantica, Cali managed to keep the REAL thing, la Salsa Clasica/Dura genre alive and going. To put it in a better way, the city of Cali has a soul and its soul is SALSA! What makes Cali so special as a salsa destination has a lot to do with the fanaticism of its wonderful people to all things salsa related. The city boasts its own individual salsa dance style, which is one of the main three in the world. The Salsa Capital is home to many world class salsa dance schools, which not only teach Cali Style, but also others. Some of these schools, such as Swing Latino and Sondeluz have produced world championship winning dancers and continue to do so. Every year eager Salseros from Europe, North America and beyond come down and take special courses in some of these schools to improve their dance skills and understanding of salsa movement and the music, sometimes up to instructor certificate levels. Cali is home to approximately 80 registered salsa orchestras. The total number of bands in the World Salsa Capital are estimated to number around 140. These bands can be seen in action during the year, specially during the cities special salsa events. The bands based in Cali, some of which will be familiar names, include Grupo Niche, Orquesta Guayacan, Son de Cali, Carlos Guerrero, Orquesta Sounaré, Juan Llanos y La Tropa, Clandeskina, Jairo Gañan y Batá Klan, Orquesta Feminina D’Caché, Jimmy Saa and many more. 5 Cali - World Salsa Capital Throughout the years salsa clubbing has implanted itself within the core of Caleño culture. Cali is home to some of the best salsa clubs on the planet. The music played in many of these discotecas and salsotecas (specialist clubs) is a reference for all visiting salsa professionals. Some of the top and most popular venues include, Zaperoco, Tin Tin Deo, Las Brisas de Jamundi, Siboney, Disco Club Salsa, Chango, La Bodega Cubana and El Habanero. For those who are more into the musical side, salsoteca’s such as Gary Dominguez’s La Casa Latina, come very well recommended. These are just some suggestions as there are many, many more great salsa clubs and bars in Cali and its suburbs of Menga and Juanchito (where clubs can stay open til 8 am). One salsa venue to note is The Lebron Brothers San Juan, bar, restaurant and discoteca. For those of you who know your salsa, you will know that the Lebron Brothers are the legendary Puerto Rican/US salsa orchestra. Two of the brothers have made Cali their home and this is their club which holds regular live events. Cali is home to great events such as El Festival Mundial de la Salsa, which is mainly dance event/competition held usually during the week starting mid September. During the day there are open and free to attend interviews with salsa musicians, dancers and intellectuals, while during the evenings different free to attend 6 dance competitions occur in various locations. All of this culminates at the weekend where for 3 nights in a row the public are treated to see the best dance schools competing often to live bands at the open air La Plaza de Toros. Cali’s main salsa event is called La Feria de Cali which starts on the 25th of December and ends on the 30th. La Feria is for many salseros the best salsa show on earth, when world class salsa bands from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela and beyond converge on the World Salsa Capital and join with the local bands to create a five day party that will mark any salsa lover forever. During this period, many Salseros spend their day time hours in the El Encuentro de Los Melomanos y Colecciónistas (the meeting of salsa collectors and connoisseurs), where some the best DJs in town play their rare salsa tracks, while music vendors sell anything from classic salsa vinyls to the latest productions, together with salsa themed T-shirts, musical instruments and memorebilia. There are dance shows and live salsa performances in the evenings. Cali’s salsa culture is so rich that even without attending the main musical events one can dance salsa every day of the week during any time of the year. Salsa is everywhere. One can hear it in taxis, supermarkets and department stores. There are half a dozen FM radio stations that play mainly salsa 24 hours a day. One of these stations, La Zeta, plays pure salsa, day and night. Great music is still available on vinyls, CDs and DVDs for the serious collectors to buy from record shops. For those who love this music, a few short weeks in Cali can be like a religious experience. Cali’s salsa industry extends to musical instruments. Companies such as El Piernas and Triple A manufacture world class percussion instruments. Cali is home to the world’s first salsa themed hotel boutique - Hotel Posada Salsa-Boutique (www.posadasalsa.com), as well as a salsa museum (www.salsamuseo.com). Wether or not people dance On One, On Two or on 20 is irrelevant. If you know your individual salsa style well enough, then you can dance with anyone from any style - it is all salsa! By the same token, if you love salsa for real, no matter which ‘style’ you dance, then you will love Cali, the world salsa Mecca, the world salsa university and the World Salsa Capital! 7 The Salsa themed hotel "Salsa Boutique" in Cali, Colombia “SALSA-BOUTIQUE” - THE SALSA THEMED HOTEL BOUTIQUE IN THE WORLD SALSA CAPITAL OF CALI, COLOMBIA! class residential neighborhood of El Peñon. This safe and beautiful area is also one of the main gastronomic and hotel zones of the World Salsa Capital. he idea of setting up a small salsa themed hotel was born in my head during the later period of my last stint in London. I knew that I would be living in my dream city of Cali (the other one being Rio de Janeiro, where I have already lived and DJ-ed). The question was what to do in Cali. Eventhough my main love is the salsa club business and DJ-ing, I knew that it would be better to do something else that was salsa related, but new. The hotel is within walking distance of world class restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as the colonial neighborhood of San Antonio and Rio Cali (the river), which forms a natural border between El Peñon and the neighboring area of Normandia. “Salsa-Boutique” is a short taxi ride away from some of the best salsa clubs and dance schools in Cali (and on the planet). T Hotel Posada “Salsa-Boutique” opened its doors to the salsa world in December of 2010. All of the salsa themed rooms pay homage to a legendary salsa sonero. The paintings in the rooms and in the rest of the hotel are the work of master painter Guillermo Gonzalez of Medellin, who is a salsero himself and who paintings are exclusively of salsa artists. The hotel is located in the upper middle 8 The hotel’s connection to salsa is not limited to the decoration only. The reception area provides information on all things salsa related - clubs, dance schools, where to buy music and even to which salsa music to buy. Once in Cali, the hotel guests can also choose to have private salsa classes within hotel premises. All the salsa teachers who teach for the hotel are world class salsa instructors, including those from Swing Latino, Sondeluz, La Vieja Guardia and more. Our salsa teachers have in the past included the likes of the world champions Jhon and Yudi, formerly of Swing Latino and the current Swing Latino world champions , Milady and Jhon. The amazing Andres Ruiz of the top salsa school, Sondeluz is one of our regular teachers. We also count on Jeny Ortega of La Vieja Guardia. For those guests who wish to take learn in the actual salsa schools, the hotel reception can contact the academies and help with class arrangements. DJ Ara All of Salsa-Boutique’s rooms come with private bathrooms and are equipped with plasma TVs, air conditioners and mini fridges. The room tarrifs include American Breakfast. The hotel also operates an optional airport taxi service. For more information about SalsaBoutique, the first salsa themed hotel in the world, please visit its website: www.posadasalsa.com 9 La Feria de Cali LA FERIA DE CALI - THE MOST IMPORTANT SALSA EVENT ON EARTH? E venthough, the title of this article is in form of a question, for many, including international salsa legends such as the leader of La Sonora Ponceña, Maestro Papo Lucca, La Feria de Cali, which was born in 1958, is the most important salsa event on the planet! For those salsa lovers who are not aware of this important musical event then let me say, if you are a real salsa music lover (and scholar) and also love to dance the night away, while experiencing an authentic salsa culture, then this festival is just what the doctor ordered for you. La Feria de Cali starts on the 25th of December and ends on the 30th. This event is has helped solidify the city of Cali’s World Salsa Capital status. 10 The main event on the first day of this festival is “El Salsodromo”, which is inspired by Rio de Janeiro Carnaval’s Sambodromo. This important event starts around lunch time and goes on to the early evening hours, where salsa fans are treated to a colorful parade of dancing by Cali’s best dance schools (and there are many). There are also top national and international orchestras who perform for the public on mobile platforms, following the different dance groups. The 25th of December is also the first day of “El Encuentro de los Melomanos y Coleccionistas” (the meeting of salsa music collectors and connoisseurs). This is an all day open air event where visitors can hear some the best salsa DJs in Cali and beyond playing their rare tracks. There are music vendors from all over Colombia selling a great variety of salsa music (vinyls, CDs, DVDs) and other salsa themed merchandise, including musical instruments. Later on in the evening the people are usually treated to live bands and dance shows. This event is free and lasts until the 30th of December. Other highlights of this salsa festival include the Super Concierto, El Festival de las Orquestas, Encuentro de Bailarines y Bailadores (a great dance show event) and Concierto de Cierre (the closing concert) on the 30th of December. That is not all, during this period all of Cali’s dozens of salsa clubs are buzzing even more than usual with dancers and partiers. Many of the local salsa orchestras as well as visiting bands from Puerto Rico, Cuba, USA and elsewhere do special shows in some of the larger venues and even theaters. There are also special salsa cabaret shows including the famous Delirio, Ensalsate and more, where audiences are treated to world class dance shows, live music and can join in the fun of dancing the night away during the intervals and after the end of the shows. For any visitors wanting to experience this special event, including future guests at the “Salsa-Boutique”, the salsa themed hotel (www.posadasalsa.com) my advice is to come a few days before the start of La Feria de Cali, just to rest and to acclimatize to the beautiful city that is Cali and leave at least a few days after the arrival of the New Year, so as to have recovered from the partying. Those people who are worried about safety issues, my advice is that you should take the same precautions you would take when visiting any large city, which should include staying in a safe neighborhood. If you do, then you will see that Cali is safer than many other places you have already travelled to. For more information about La Feria or Cali in general you can contact me personally. Already today it’s considered to be one of the most promising Salsa CD releases of the upcoming years. Besides the wellknown tracks “Pa’ Mi Gente (No me importa)” and “Al final de la vida” the title song “Pasaporte” has already recieved 500,000 clicks on YouTube. With it’s fascinating rhythmic and musical fusion of Salsa, Jazz, Funk and AfroCuban, Alexander Abreu has made a name both as a musician and as a 14 songwriter all around the world and created his own style. “Pasaporte” is a well-arranged musical masterpiece and an absolute must for all salsa lovers. The music calls for your body, the lyrics for your soul. It’s also extraordinary that for the first time Alexander recorded duets with other world famous salsa musicians. On the one hand songs like “Donde estemos tú y yo” with Isaac Delgado and “La Figura” with Gente De Zona shows Alexander’s musical diversity, on the other hand it paves the CD’s way to the world of Salsa Linea and Reggeaton. The CD is rounded out with perfect arrangements and the musical top casts. Founded just in 2008, the orchestra led by Alexander consists of the most significant artists of todays Cuban music scene. Although the group is comparably young, many musicians, such as Amaury Perez (trombone), Tony Rodriguez (piano), Harold Diaz (keyboard), Roger Naples (guitar), Rodney Iyarza Barreto (drums and Timbas) and Guillermo del Toro (congas and percussion) already belong to the Cuban All Stars. Alexander is also one of them and had initially made a name as an instrumentalist. He played with the most well-known bands in Cuba, such as Irakere, Chucho Valdés, Omara Portuondo, Paulo FG, Isaac Delgado, Carlos Manuel y Su Clan, Manolin El Medico De La Salsa and many more Cuban musicians. In addition to his own music he remains one of the most renowned trumpeters of Cuba, enriching almost every major music production on the island. has been touring all across Europe and South America, 2012 for the first time also in the United States. If you ever get the chance to see them playing live, use the opportunity! Besides the performances of the top soloists, the interplay of the band is an absolute musical delight. Parallel to his career on stage, Alexander graduated at the National School Of Arts in Havana where he began to teach later on. In conclusion he received his doctorate in jazz music at the Conservatory RMC Copenhagen (Denmark) in 2005 and began to compose his own songs. This year they will play on Cuba, in Ecuador and again in the United States in November. In the second quarter of 2013 the band will most likely perform all over Europe once again. Since 2009 the band Learn more about the current CD and details on upcoming concerts on: www.havanadprimera.com Andre Bressling 15 W hat happens when passion meets openmindedness? We all know of those many different styles of salsa. The great amount of incredibly good dancers has brought diversity into the scene. When Adolfo Indacochea was interviewed at the Freiburg Salsa Festival he emphasized that one shouldn’t segregate in salsa, but enjoy the diversity of styles and dance together. The Artist Adolfo Indacochea 16 When Adolfo Indacochea dances he certainly causes a stir. His moves are full of energy but always with his very own smooch touch. His unique style combines mambo with elements of other styles such as jazz, flamenco, or modern dance. But it’s not only that – he also lets himself inspire by the different styles of salsa. Together with Maykel Fonts and Juan Matos he also made an attempt to combine mambo and salsa cubana. Always evolving, always creating new combinations he manged to become an influential teacher and inspiration to many. Adolfo already took the chance to dance on the worlds best stages such as Lincoln Center or Lehman College and has also worked with artists such as Gilberto Santo Rosa, Larry Harlow and even Frankie Vázquez. He has danced and trained nearly all over the world, in the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, France, Spain, Italy and Germany. 17 MAIN SPONSORS www.salsafestival.com Kongresshaus Zürich SPONSORS 18 www.yallo.ch PARtNeRS www.bluecard.ch Adolfo Indacochea and Juan Matos, London 2012 He’d been dancing salsa since he was a kid, but took his first professional dancing lesson in 2001, after having moved from Peru to Mexico where he learned to dance On1. His talent was soon recognized by his roommate Adriano Adellano, who invited him to join his newly formed dance company „Salzumba“. Besides dancing, he also discovered his passion for teaching. After only about 10 months he began giving dancing lessons and soon formed his own company “Mamboss“. Today this is one of the best Salsa companies and dance schools of Mexico. Adolfo is certainly nobody who stays on the same level for a long time. In 2004 he moved to San Antonio, Texas to develop his style even further. There, Adolfo was invited to be part of the company „Semeneya“ where he also gave dancing lessons. In the same he also worked with his partner Claudia Vázquez. 19 Adolfo Indacochea In 2003 Adolfo discovered his passion for Salsa On2, after he saw Eddie Torres and his dancers at the Salsa Congress in New York. With great ambition he learned the New York style. The change from On1 to On2 wasn’t easy, but he was driven by a great motivation. In September 2004 he finally moved to New York, where he worked for Amanda Estilo and trained the company „Karisma Dancers“, led by his friend Victor Mayovanex. Soon after that he was invited by the great „Mambo King“ himself – Eddie Torres – to join his equipe. Together with Jessica Ortiz Adolfo became one of the shooting stars of New York’s mambo scene. After two very successful years, Adolfo left the company to further develop his career and started working with Melissa Rosado, another of Eddie Torres dancers. Together they began dancing and training all over the world. Then, in 2008, after having moved to Spain, he worked with Sheila de Jesús until he joined with Carla Voconi in 2009. In newer days, Adolfo is situated in Milano, Italy with Tania Cannarsa and his current group Latin Soul Dancers. Besides his enthusiastic personality and his unbeaten passion for mambo, he has his unique style of teaching. Adolfo believes that everybody who wants to learn mambo needs to get into its history, the origins of the music. Besides that he said that the best tip he got for dancing was just to have fun and feel the music. Adolfo has brought new energy to the mambo scene. Keeping the traditions of mambo, but giving them a new exiting touch. He works in clubs, on festivals and has been resident DJ of the Berlin Salsacongress since 2001. GRUPO ARCANO In 2008, George Vélez Jr. and his father, George Vélez Sr. founded Grupo Arcano with the aid of Danny Diaz (bass) and Ray Torres (ex-singer). Soon they were joined by the pianist and composer Harold Gutiérrez. As George Vélez Jr. puts it „a bunch of musicians, kind of unknown to the majority of the NYC latin salsa musicians scene“. Thus they live up to their name Grupo Arcano. The newest and youngest band member is conguero and vocalist Anthony Almonte who solidified what Grupo Arcano is all about: Smooth melodies, searing mambos, joyful rhythms and a serious approach of soneando. The instrumentation is key to its unforgetable sound created by the brass section comprised of trumpets, trombones and a woodwind section made up of an alto and tenor saxophone. The sound is best described by a mixture of La Sonora Ponceña and Tito Rodriguez with a Brooklyn/Queens twist. The base is traditonal salsa with some hot new sounding trends. Being asked about the favorite songs of the latest CD, George Vélez Jr. said: “I love them all. But La Maya or Un Tipo Salao take the cherry for me, musically. Both lyrics are written by my father and La Maya is even sung by himself meanwhile Un Tipo Salao is sung by Anthony. Both singers did an amazing job in the vocals and when they sing their soneos during the chorus sections.“ ‘Desde el otro lado del East River‘ is a highly recommended debut album of young professional musicians with arrangements that are not too predictable and thus give the dancers a full range of interpretation. DJ El CHino (Colombia) Music producer, promoter, cultural manager, journalist and DJ - he is a real allrounder. DJ el Chino‘s Solar Latin Club is a predominant source for latin music.
