Save-A-Pet Auction
Life is
Beautiful
18th Annual
Save-A-Pet
Auction
May 15, 2004
Featured on our front cover
are the 2004 mascots!
Doyle the Cat & Sunshine the Dog.
Stop by and see them at Save-A-Pet
and all the other animals anxiously
awaiting their forever homes as well.
From the Board President of Save-A-Pet
Life IS beautiful,
especially for cats and dogs at Save-A-Pet who get
a second chance thanks to our No-Kill mission.
Animals understand the beauty and preciousness of life evident by the extreme range of
emotions they express. They suffer from depression when they watch the person to whom they have
devoted all their love walk away from them for the last time after giving them up. They experience
comfort in the safety and love given by Save-A-Pet’s staff and volunteers. And they feel sheer joy when someone singles them out as
their newly chosen family member.
At Save-A-Pet,
we value each life we encounter.
All odds were against a beautiful elderly labrador retriever
named Babe when she arrived at our shelter. She was rescued from a
miserable life of neglect, chained as an outside dog 24 hours a day. Our
medical team discovered she had heartworm disease and cancerous
tumors. But we weren’t about to tell her that her precious life wasn’t
worth saving. We treated the heartworm, removed the tumors and she is
now residing as an office dog awaiting her forever home. Unfortunately,
her cancer has returned, but our commitment to her hasn’t wavered.
She awaits additional surgery, and we are optimistic about her future.
When a woman spotted a terrified gray tabby cat and her
kittens under her deck (actually her dog spotted them first!), she
wasn’t sure what to do. She called Save-A-Pet for help, and a volunteer
walked her through the process of catching a cat who is leery of humans.
It worked! She brought them in, and Puss’n’Boots and kittens were
placed in a staff member’s home for foster care. In this home she
learned that people are pretty nice after all. When it was time to come
back to the shelter, the kittens were adopted immediately, but
Puss’n’Boots wasn’t thriving in the cat room. She became very depressed
and had several medical issues that left her virtually “furless”. At no
time did we consider giving up on this cat. After many months of outstanding efforts on behalf of our staff and volunteers, Puss’n’Boots is
now a healthy, friendly cat waiting for a home. (By the way, the woman who
Babe
saved these little lives became a Save-A-Pet volunteer!)
We experience stories like these every day at Save-A-Pet. Our
donors, volunteers and employees, all working together, allow
us to provide a bright future for thousands of homeless animals each year.
Puss’n’Boots
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your devoted
support. Our mission at Save-A-Pet remains solid:
To us, every life is beautiful.
Sincerely,
Karen Rappaport
President, Save-A-Pet Board of Directors

Hi! My name is Sunshine!
You may have seen my picture on the auction posters around town. As the 2004 Auction canine mascot, I thought you should know a little bit about me.
I bring a smile to everyone that takes me out. I’m fun, outgoing and think that life is meant to be lived
to its fullest potential. I’m already trained and my friends think that I just look so adorable. They are
totally mesmerized by my ears – see they always stick up, whether I’m just sitting or running. Now
there is more than just ears here! Look at my cute wiggling body….
I love to play and have quite a few canine boyfriends at the shelter. I am unstoppable, better than the
Energizer batteries! I love the kids’ pools in the play area. I roll in there and always share it with
whomever I’m playing at that time. Someone even said that I looked like a hippopotamus!
I’m also getting pretty good on the agility ramp in the play area.
I’ve been at the shelter for over a year without anyone seriously asking about me.
I’m an optimist though and I think this year will be my lucky one, just like last year’s
auction canine mascot, Pierce! He found a home!

Hi, I'm Doyle!
You may have seen my picture on the auction posters around town. As the Auction 2004 feline mascot, I
thought you should know a little bit about me.
Hey, you can’t miss me, I’m the one with the big cheeks, the gorgeous fluffy suit and the first to welcome you
to the HighFIVers’ room. Even if I’m taking a nap, I come down the tree to greet you, you won’t find a more
friendly cat…actually all the people that have FIV positive cats always say the same about us….we are the
greatest purrers of the feline world and the most laid-back too. What else could you ask for?
I am so excited to have been the chosen feline for this year’s mascot. However what I’m really looking for is
to be the next one selected to go to my forever home! Got laps, I’m your guy and am more than
willing to share them with another FIV positive cat, maybe one of my friends here.
le
Love, Doy
Doyle is FIV positive but asymptomatic. FIV cats often live long lives, are not contagious to other animal
species or to people. Above all, like any other cats, they all deserve a loving home. For additional information
on our FIV positive cats looking for a home or for information on FIV, please contact us at 847-740-7788, ext.
100 or information@save-a-pet-il.org.
Update: Doyle has recently moved to new digs…with Delilah, another FIV positive cat from Save-A-Pet.

Moonshine
I was so scared when I came to Save-A-Pet!
All I would do is hide in the back of my cage.
Then I found my friend, Maxine,
and life became better.
Now I love to play and be petted.
People really are very nice!
Sometimes being picked up is fine for
a minute or two, but tummy rubs
and a lap when I’m tired are really
a lot better!
Maxine and I really would like to go to
our forever home now!
Moonshine is sponsored by Linda Sowray
and is waiting impatiently to go home with Maxine.
Maxine
I was a scared stray in the wilds of Chicago
when a kind lady took me to Save-A-Pet.
It took me a long time to trust people, but I
love my friend Moonshine very much.
People are fun to play little bouncy-ball
and furry mouse with.
Sometimes I forget that I like being picked
up and I really don’t like having my tummy
tickled. But I purr when you pet me and
when I wake up.
Moonshine and I are ready to go
to our forever home now!
Maxine is sponsored by Linda Sowray
and is waiting impatiently to go home with Moonshine.

Sonny
Though they aren’t related, they could be twins.
Vinny is a shy boy, needing someone to help him

she enjoys the company

seek you out when she

Josie
Moe
Lifestyle of the Infamous is what Josie escaped. So now instead of
being a “yard” dog, Josie is 100 lbs of unbridled love, trying to make
up for lost time in the love department. If you can handle complete
devotion from a determined girl, it is time to make a date to meet her.
Got lap?
That's the question Moe asks almost everyone he meets. Head
scratches and tender petting rank among his favorite things in life too.
And without laps, well baskets have to do. A big cool boy, he loves to
snooze, and sometimes watches the world he lives in but never
critiques anything! Moe is looking for a sunny home.

Sharon Ramon’s
“In Celebration of Dinah”
Our story began one day in Spring 2001. I had just bid
a tearful farewell to my second four-pawed friend in as
many years and sent him on his way to the rainbow
bridge. With a depth of loss I had never before experienced, I found a sense of relief in donating toys filled
with memories and cookies waiting to be eaten to the
welcoming arms of Save-A-Pet.
While stopping by that day, I noticed an application to
volunteer in whatever capacity and level of involvement I
chose. I paused only momentarily, knowing
what I needed to do. I soon became a dog
walker and enjoyed every precious moment
I spent with my furry friends. It was so hard
to leave each time I came by, knowing how
much love was waiting in each kennel, in
each pair of eyes.
Then I saw her. She was creating quite a
racket, intent on being seen and heard. I didn't really want to notice her. I didn't want to walk her. I was still
grieving. I wasn't ready. But each time I came, she barked and shook the kennel door. She had a purpose
and she was determined.
I slowly allowed myself to discover her. I learned her history. I finally walked with her. I could see she was
intelligent and proud, cautious but willing, full of fire and life. She was only 1½ years old. She needed
another chance. We found we both did.
She is still independent and adventurous. She lives life with gusto. I wouldn't have it any other way. She
loves her belly rubs and daily walks and waits for hours by the window until I return. Now she is mine and I
am hers and we will travel through life together always.
Thank you, Save-A-Pet, for blessing me with Dinah!
In loving memory of Rocky and Brittany who found me along life's way.

The Special
Needs Cats
Present:
“A Housecat’s
Message”
by Theresa Malizia
Annabelle
When I crinkle my eyes closed, I am smiling at you. A brush against your
shin is a hug, a message that says 'I love you and want you to smell like
me'. Please know that I adore a long stroke down my back but stop before
my tail, as that is my rudder and its momentary confinement can panic me.
Know also that I love a good scratch around the ears, but usually detest
having my feet explored. Balance is life or death to a cat and my feet are
as important to me as breathing.
Divinia
Feel free to tickle my chin but be gentle and do not break my whiskers;
for me they are important tools. If I trust you utterly, you will be allowed to
stroke my belly. Though I can communicate silently with other of my kind,
I will vocalize for you. I will meow, hiss, yap for dinner and chirr my curiosity. I know that a single brrppp make you laugh and slop me with a kiss. I
will tippy-toe when I'm trying to be cute. And when I sit with my back
turned and with only one ear honed in your direction, I am not ignoring
you by any means; I am being coy. I love to perch, burrow, strut and
stalk.
Sabra
When I jump on the bed to be with you in the dark, it is not because I
need to sleep. In most cases I have been sleeping all day. I am there
because of your warmth, your companionship and to share the air you
breathe. I know when you are melancholy and I will stay nearby if you are
in pain, but I will never understand the necessity of vacuuming. There was
a time when I loved the 'other feline' in the house and have mourned his
loss with a grief unmatched. I am always listening.
Know that I am clean and dignified even when I am belly-up on the windowsill in the sunshine. I crave peace. My three favorite things are: mice
in the walls, your voice on my neck and the can opener. I can slink and
sidle, sooth and steal and make myself scarce. Know that I find you
noisy, sadly fur-less and strangely excitable about a single hairball, but
I forgive you out of grand benevolence. I understand the aching sweetness of a spring rainstorm... and a good cry.
Cloudy
CZ
Toby II
Know that I will purr when I am hurt or frightened, as well as when
I am content. No, I don't always clean my plate. It is instinct to leave
Trish
a cache-just in case. Contrary to popular belief, I don't mind the vet
because of the way it smells, the other animals, the inevitable pain or
the travel. Rather, I hate to go there in case you leave me.
So, even when I stare into the corner late at night and scare you half to
death, or I stroll casually over your computer keyboard, or even when I
appear to be barely impressed by your ranting about work or school, know
that I am a separate nation from you with all my borders open. I reserve
the right to certain terms and conditions, but my spirit would be inconsolable without you. Live beside me.
