A Bonanza Intake for Tenby’s 6th Form!
A bumper crop of thirty-seven students have joined the Sixth Form at Tenby Schools
Ipoh bringing our total enrolment to seventy– two as of 27th June 2014. This makes Tenby
Schools Ipoh the school with the highest A-level enrolment in the North Zone (Penang, Perak,
Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu) of Peninsular Malaysia according to a CIE source.
Kudos to the Tenby A-level teaching staff and to our parent-student fraternity
whose good work and good words have inspired such public confidence in our Sixth Form.

Here’s what a selection of our newbies had to say about

Tenby Schools Ipoh.
Chan Weng Kit, Winner of Best All-Round Scholar Award from his former school SMK Anderson Ipoh:
“I opted to join Tenby’s Sixth Form because of its stress on education for global citizenship. Some of my
seniors from Anderson School have graduated from the Tenby Sixth Form not only with outstanding academic results but with a greatly broadened perspective in international affairs.”
Chong Chin Hong, from SMK Horley Methodist, Teluk Intan:
“I had the choice of studying in Kuala Lumpur or choosing a college nearer home (Teluk Intan). Tenby was
my choice because my elder brother, Chin Liang, has been truly enjoying himself at the Sixth Form here. I
suppose I got really infected by his enthusiasm for the strong fraternal spirit at Tenby Ipoh.”

Arts Week
The week commencing 16th June was an exciting
time for TIS, Ipoh as we hosted our first ever Arts
Week. The week’s events included an Art and
Design & Technology exhibition collated by
Ms Michelle and Mr Fergus, Tenby’s Got Talent
and An Evening of Dance. The auditorium was
packed for both events and we would like to take
this opportunity to thank the parents, guardians,
family and friends who came along to be a
member of our audiences. We would also like to
thank parents and guardians for their continued
support for the Arts at Tenby with even more
exciting events planned for the future (details to
follow in coming months).
An Evening of Music
Indeed, we are already looking forward to the
Evening of Music event which has been rescheduled to Wednesday 23rd July. Tickets for this
event will be available from Dr Rowlands from
Wednesday 2nd July. The Evening of Music will
start at 8pm sharp and will conclude at approximately 9.30pm. We look forward to seeing many
of you there.
Art and Design & Technology Exhibition
The Art and Design & Technology Exhibition was a
major attraction at Arts Week, showcasing the
achievements of students from the Primary School
right up to Year 11. We were fortunate enough to
have a car included as part of the exhibition which
was renovated by Silver Low in Year 10 Blue. Silver
has had his work showcased at other public events
under the title ‘Engineering or Art’ with his car not
only being remodeled on the outside, but also on
the inside, with hand stitched seat covers just one
of Silver’s many amendments.

The exhibition drew in our crowds prior to the
evening’s performances as our audience members
had the opportunity to view the sculptures,
paintings, drawings all created by our students. We
look forward to next year’s exhibition where we
once again will get the chance to see the amazing
creativity and skill of our students.

Tenby’s Got Talent 3
The Final Round of Tenby’s Got Talent 2014 was
held in the auditorium of TIS on the 17th of June as
the opening event of Arts Week, preceding the
Evening of Dance (18th of June). This year’s Tenby’s
Got Talent (TGT) was the third one held so far by
the TIS, and was also the first one held in the new
school block. The auditorium was abuzz with excitement as the performers waited nervously backstage
and the audience waited eagerly for the start of the
show – a show that did not disappoint.

Tenby’s Got Talent 3 made full use of the new
auditorium: the lights, the spacious interior and the
speakers and projection system. The inclusion of
Drama and Dance into our curriculum led by Ms Nikki
made the participants well prepared for the utilization
of the facilities as well as the daunting act of performing in front of an audience. Being held only once
every 2 years, it gartered much interest from the
students and parents numbering about 300 on that
night.
Tenby’s Got Talent was again planned by the
Prefectorial Board members and emceed by the
Head Prefect (Emily Ho). The 3 judges were selected
from the teaching staff and were able to offer feedback and praise for all of the performers, in the qualifying rounds and at the final event itself.
Tenby’s Got Talent is a great outlet for the
students to showcase their talents and individual
personalities. This year the third place award went to
Julia, Sangeeta, Surekha, Wan Wei, Bryan and
Eamonn from Year 8 for their creative dance which
used glow sticks to dazzle the audience. The second
place award went to Aaliyah and Lara for their dance
performance showcasing their amazing technical
abilities. This year’s first place award went to Joshua
Myat and Marco George who impressed both judges
and audience alike with their musical rendition which
included singing, guitar playing and even beat boxing. Congratulations must go to all of our finalists who
put on such an outstanding performance.
This year’s TGT was very successful and we
hope that it will be a sign of many more events like
this to come. It could be described as a very
rewarding educational experience for the students
and it demonstrated that Tenby does indeed have
talent, and we of the Prefectorial Board will ensure
that the next Tenby’s Got Talent will be nothing but
better than the last.

An Evening of Dance
Year 9 Green & 9 Blue in their flashmob performance .
What better way to celebrate the introduction of
Dance to our KS3 curriculum than to have the whole of
Years 7 – 9 performing for their families and friends in
our very own auditorium. This is exactly what happened on Wednesday 18th June 2014 at TIS, Ipoh.
With 200 performers and 300 audience members, the
event proved to be a great mid week celebration of our
students’ talents.
Students have been working hard in their Dance
lessons this year to develop their performance and
choreography skills in preparation for the evening’s
events. Students readied themselves backstage
demonstrating excellent professionalism as they
focused on the task at hand – performing in a jam
packed auditorium on our raised stage installed
especially for the week’s events.
Year 7 Blue : Disco Inferno
Auditions for Secondary students will be held later in
the summer term ready for the classes to commence
anew in September.
Students from Year 7 all the way up to KBSM 5
performed in this exciting event incorporating dances in
a range of styles for contemporary to commercial.
Alexander Ho from 7 Blue described his feelings about
the performance: “It turned out to be a great evening –
I can’t believe there were 300 people watching us!
There was no room for mistakes but we all did a great
job.” Kok San Jet, also from Year 7 Blue described the
evening’s performance as “stunning and exhilarating”.
Plans are already in place for Arts events in the
new academic year and we look forward to seeing
many of you there!
The Evening of Dance not only showcased work
from each of our KS3 classes, but also provided an
opportunity for some of our CCA work to be shared.
We saw 2 performances from Revolution Dance
Company – ‘Hopeless Wanderer’ and ‘Embers’, the
latter of which was originally created for the official
opening ceremony of the school earlier this year.
Revolution Dance Company is a mixed ability group
that looks to develop students’ technique and performance skills in the style of Contemporary Dance.

Year 11 Leavers’ Assembly
On Thursday 12th June, TIS said goodbye to its
Year 11 students in a special assembly celebrating
their time at the school. During the assembly, Year 9
dancers and Year 10 band NMA entertained the
graduating students, whilst teachers contributed a
performance of ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by Abba
and delivered personal goodbye speeches. At the end
of the assembly, following a mock graduation
ceremony, Loo Yi Ming and Krutika Chandrashekhar
gave speeches summarising their time in Tenby.
Yi Ming said he had met his favourite people during his
time at Tenby and said, “I’m very proud to be
graduating from this school.”

Krutika, speaking to the younger year groups said,
“I literally grew up in Tenby Schools Ipoh. I spent most
of my childhood here and I really miss the old school
because that’s where I spent most of my time. I had a
lot of fun and I wish you guys too have a lot of fun.”
The assembly, the first of its kind, was followed by
a balloon release inspired by the school’s Opening
Ceremony held in March. Miss Carina said, “the purpose of the assembly was to give students the send-off
they deserve in the more personal, informal way an
assembly allows for. It was a chance for Year 11 to
reflect on their time here, the friendships they’d forged
and most importantly the impact they have had on the
teachers and students they are leaving behind.”
“The students’ reactions, particularly during their
leavers’ video, as they laughed and sighed, clapped
and cheered, made it all worthwhile. It was a privilege
to plan the event and see it melt not only the students’
hearts across all year groups but also the teachers’.”
Before the assembly, Year 11s received their year
book, complete with teacher messages, personal
reflections and photos depicting their journey through
Tenby, in a special party held in the canteen.

Year 11 student, Judith Merisha Louis reflected on the event, “My favourite part was when our
teachers sang with our photos running in the
background. The assembly almost brought me to
tears and the other years should have a chance to
experience it as we did because it just makes
your last days at Tenby that much more memorable. The year book is something I'll cherish
forever.”

both of Year 10 for their professionalism and
comic timing.

when the video played – I actually had tears in my
eyes. Still, it was an honour hosting the Leaver’s
Assembly!”

at the assembly, but I was choking with emotion when

Year 6 Assembly - All In One Rhythm!
South America
On Friday 13th June, Year 6 transported the excitement
& energy of the World Cup opening ceremony all the way
from Sao Paolo, Brazil to Tenby Schools Ipoh in a dazzling
international stage show.
Spectators were issued tickets for the exciting event, and
were greeted at the entrance to Tenby Stadium by the
official World Cup 2014 mascot, Fuleco, a Brazilian armadillo who closely resembled Wong Lincoln. Parents and students from all Key Stage 2 classes assembled for the important 11.30am kick off.
The Year 6 performers entered to the sound of Ester
Dean – Rio, and performed a spectacular synchronised
dance with flags of all 32 competing nations from World Cup
2014.
The presenters SM Ashraf and Erica Lee took to the
microphone to explain the history of the World Cup and
details of the special prize draw that was about to take
place. Footballs for all 32 nations had been assigned to
classes and teachers, and the owner of the World Cup 2014
winner’s ball will receive their very own Tenby World Cup!
Each Year 6 student introduced interesting facts about
each competing nation, taking everyone on a world tour
around the global continents. We began in South America,
home of the host nation this year, where students found out
the national dish of Colombia, the language of Chile, the
wildlife of the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador
and plenty more besides.
The footballs for each country were kicked into the crowd
to be collected by the recipients. There was a party
atmosphere in the auditorium as students cheered for their
favourite countries and stretched to catch the balls.
We then journeyed up through North America, where we
learned about Mexican cuisine, the USA and one of the
smallest nations to take part in the World Cup: Honduras.
Then we crossed the Atlantic to
Europe, where some of the
favourites were introduced and
assigned to classes & teachers. We
discovered the history of England’s
stolen World Cup, the national
animal of Italy & some fine examples
of German engineering.
The next group of European
teams included some facts about
popular Greek coffee, the currency
of Bosnia & Herzegovina, and the
origins of Toblerone.
Year 6 World Cup Assembly begins!
We then traveled south to
Africa, where we found out about
the national dish of Nigeria, the
nickname of Ghana’s football
team, and geography of Cameroon.
We finished in Asia & Australia, where we discovered the national plant of Japan, the nickname of the South Korean team
and the mascot of Australia.
There was however one surprise left, as the hosts Brazil had
been left out! We eventually
found out Brazil’s illustrious
World Cup history, and the ball
was assigned to… Year 5 Blue.

for their work, and should feel
very proud of their achievement.
We hope all students learned

KBSM 5 & Year 11 Leavers’ Prom Night
Tenby Schools Ipoh bid farewell to their
leaving Year 11 & KBSM 5 students in one
memorable night in which laughter was shared
and tears were shed as they looked back at their
journey here. This year, we held our Leavers’
Prom Night at Casuarina Meru on 13 June 2014.
There was a walk in by the graduating
group with their respective partners, well dressed
in stunning suits and gorgeous gowns, escorted
into the room by the ushers hailing from our very
own Year 10 classes.
The night began with a speech by Mr Neil
Page, Head of International Secondary and Madam Soot, Principal of Sekolah Tenby. Shortly after
the speech, the lights dimmed and a video started
rolling on a projector to rekindle memories of the
graduating classes experiences at Tenby. A buffet
-styled dinner was served soon after that while
students began their entertaining performances for
the night. The performances ranged from musical
acts to dance performances.
Proceeding with the achievement
awards, for the Year 11, Vernon Mah received the
Academic Excellence Award, followed by Bryan
Lam with the Sporting Excellence Award, Ng Pi
Ying bagged in Most Outstanding Progress Award
and last but not least Bryan Lam was the real winner of the night as he took home the Tenby Student Of The Year Award.
For the KBSM 5, the Sporting Excellence Award went to Harinash Rao while the Tenby Student Of The Year Award was given to Choo
Wei Yang. The highlight of the night, of course,
was when the Prom King and Queen were
crowned, they were Veenodh Raj and Nur Fariha
Mohd Fariz.
There was a roar of cheering and applauding. Students were later allowed to dance
their hearts out on stage in a closing of the 2014
Tenby Schools Ipoh Leavers’ Prom Night. This
would definitely a memorable night to all the
school leavers of 2014.

Despite Shakespeare’s time-tested advice, Tenby Ipoh’s Sixth Formers celebrated a gala night in a sea
of luminous multicolored masks. “The Masque” was the theme of Cohort 7’s graduation night which was
graced by three splendidly masked personalities – Madam Lee Yam Sei (TSI Director), Mr Neil David Page
(Head of International Secondary) and Mr Lee Andrew Harvey (Vice Principal, TIS). The gathering was held
recently at the Crystal Ballroom of the Royal China Suites.
The fiesta of dance, rock music and song was attended by almost all Sixth Formers and the night’s
festivities were choreographed by the Sixth Form students of Cohorts 8 and 9 under the astute leadership
of Miss Suki Wong (President, SFC) and Sanika Renganadan (President, Cohort 9).
The Best All-Round Student 2014 award was presented by Madam Lee Yam Sei to Ashley Wong Soon
Lei while Chin Wai Hoe was named winner of “The Outstanding Progress Award 2014”. Four Sixth Formers
were cited as winners of the Meritorious Service Awards. They are Kenneth Mano, Kevin Mano, Poh Soon
Wey and Michelle Liang.
Lim Leong Wai was named the Best Dressed Gentleman for the night while Vanessa Choy was
acclaimed the Best Dressed Lady. The received their prizes from the Head of the Sixth Form, Mr Louis
Rozario Doss.
We wish our graduating class all the very best in the years ahead. May the years to come bring you rich
harvests in your studies, working career and personal lives.
A Message from SiWu Scholarship Holder (A Levels)
“ Words cannot describe the joy and gratitude
that my parents and I felt when we received
notification of the wonderful news!
I am truly honoured to have been selected as
the recipient of the prestigious Tenby SiWu
Scholarship. This scholarship has given me the
opportunity to continue Tenby’s tradition of
excellence throughout the years. I am very excited
about making new friends, meeting the dedicated
teachers, as well as contributing back to Tenby in
whatever way possible, as we strive towards the
Tenby Vision of “A United World at Peace Through Education”.”

Rehearsal! Rehearsal! Rehearsal!
Students and teachers from Nursery to Year 2 and KSSR 1 have been
working hard and rehearsing for the Production Day. The theme of the
Production Day for this year is “The Great Tenby Circus”. There will be 17
performances all together to be enjoyed on that day! It will be held at
Dewan Leong Wan Chin, SMJK Perempuan Perak, Jalan Kampar, Ipoh,
from 10.00am - 12.30pm.
