Paul Harris, Founder of Rotary
Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary,
was born in Racine, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
on April 19, 1868. He received the
bachelor of physical culture and LL.D
degrees from the University of Iowa,
and an honorary Ph.D. in 1933 from the
University of Vermont. The Boy Scouts
of America gave him the Silver Buffalo
Award, and he was decorated by the
governments of Brazil, Chile, Dominican
Republic, Ecuador, France and Peru.

Paul Harris was a lawyer in Chicago
Met with three men, Silvester Schiele, a coal dealer; Gutavus Loehr, a mining engineer and Hiram Shorey, a
merchant tailor to form what is known today as Rotary
The first meeting was on February 23, 1905
Rotary began as an idea more than 100 years ago.
Today, Rotary flourishes worldwide with 1.2 million
members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
• By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents.
• By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more
than 20,000 members
• In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The
Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary
11 years later. The test, which has been translated
into more than 100 languages, asks the following
questions:

President Ray Klinginsmith’s 50 years of Rotary experience has
contributed to his focus on communities at home and abroad. In
1959 he was chosen as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial
Scholar. He studied in South Africa from 1960 to 1961 as the
first student from his small town of Unionville, Missouri to study
abroad.
When he returned from the University of Cape Town, he and
Judie were married and honeymooned in New Orleans.
That was the start of their Rotary journey together. Ray and Judie, have two children and three grandchildren.
President Ray served many positions with Rotary. He became a
Rotary Foundation Trustee in 2002, served as vice chair in 200506, was a member of the Future Vision Committee from 2005 to
2008, and is a recipient of the Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award.
President Ray, the 100th President of Rotary International, has
instructed us to look at all traditional practices and if there is a
better way, start a new tradition.
President Ray arrived at his theme after reviewing all the RI
themes of years past. He decided he wanted a brief theme that
would fulfill two objectives: explain Rotary to non-Rotarians and
to validate the work of Rotarians. The words he selected to describe Rotary’s current mission & highlight our achievements are
what we do best ...
“Building Communities, Bridging Continents”.

John C Smarge
John Smarge has been a Rotarian
and resident of Naples, Florida
since 1981. His classification is
Moving and Storage. John and his
wife Cindy are Major Donors, Bequest Society Members and Paul
Harris Society Members. John
served as President of The Rotary Club of Naples in 1992-93
and as District 6960 Governor in 1995-96. Internationally,
John has twice been a Delegate to the Council on Legislation and twice a Member of the RI Board of Directors Nominating Committee. Additionally, he has served as both a
Rotary International Membership Coordinator and Regional
Rotary Foundation Coordinator. He is a regular speaker
around the world at TRF and Membership Seminars and
has represented the President ten times at District Conferences. John considers the most rewarding aspects of his
many years in Rotary to be the opportunity to participate in
the PolioPlus National Immunization Days in India, his
medical missions to Ternopil, Ukraine and his multiple humanitarian trips to the Caribbean. John has received numerous awards for his Rotary Service including the Rotary
Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, the Distinguished Service Award the Rotary International Service
above Self Award and was recognized in 1999 as the District
6960 Rotarian of The Decade.
John and Cindy have three daughters, Jessica 24, Stephanie
22 and Amanda 16. He is a past Board Chairman of the
Naples YMCA, Boy Scouts of America and Shelter for
Abused Women. John has coached girl's basketball teams
for more than 12 years. In his spare time, John is a competition auto racer.

Don was born in Rochester, New York.
He was educated through Cornell University and Sterling Institute. He spent
six years in the New York Army National Guard. He married his childhood
sweetheart, Sue. Together they have
two daughters, two sons-in-law, one grandson, and three granddaughters.
In 1995 Don went to work with Kraft Foods Global. Don has received the Kraft Sales Leadership Award four times. This award is
a symbol of superior achievement within the Kraft sales organization.
He is a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Cape Coral Goldcoast, was the Charter Secretary, and is a Past President of his
club. Don has been honored twice by being awarded the Rotarian of
the Year. He was Assistanta Governor 2002-2003 and 2003-2004.
Presently he is working at the District level as: District Sergeant-atArms, member of the Finance Committee, Member of the Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee and is a Rotary Leadership Institute
District Chairman & Discussion Leader Trainer and recently was
appointed Rotary Leadership Institute International Discussion
Leadership Trainer. In 2008 he was honored to receive the District
Service Above Self award.
Don has worked with Group Study Exchange since 1989. He was
Team Leader to Australia in February / March 2003. He was District Chairman for Group Study Exchange from 2003 through 2009.
Don is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Sustaining Member, and
both Sue and Don are benefactors. Sue is also a Paul Harris Fellow
and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Cape Coral Goldcoast.
He has represented District 6960 at the RI Zone 34 Regional Rotary Foundation and Membership Seminars at RI Headquarters in
Evanston, Illinois. Don is presently on the Zone 33-34 Caribbean
Partnership.

Denise Hearn
District Governor 2011-2012
Although born in New Hampshire,
Denise’s family relocated her to Michigan
at a very early age. She was educated
in Kalamazoo public schools and Western Michigan University. Denise joined
the giant consumer products firm of
Procter and Gamble in 1980 and retired
from that firm twenty years later in 2000
as Sales Manager in charge of Operations throughout the State
of Michigan.
Denise met and married Jerry, a retired Army Colonel, in 1998
and they relocated to Lakewood Ranch, Florida in 2000.
Denise was introduced to Rotary as a Charter Member of the
Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch in 2001 and has served as
Club Sergeant-at-Arms, Board of Directors member and Club
President. In 2007 she was selected as Club Rotarian of the
Year. She has served Rotary District 6960 as Aide to the
District Governor, a Facilitator for the Rotary Leadership
Institute, Facilitator for Florida Multi-District Presidents-Elect
Training Seminar, and a member of the Hurricane Relief
Committee 2004. Denise is a member of the Board of Directors
Rotary Gift of Life Florida. Denise and Jerry were hosts for the
first Ambassadorial Scholar from the Peoples Republic of
China in 2006. Other Rotary positions in which she has served
are Assistant Governor for Area 10, board member of ShelterBox USA and Suncoast Winefestival Chair in 2007.
She has traveled extensively on Rotary business, having
attended four Rotary International Conventions in Brisbane,
Osaka, Chicago and Copenhagen and a Friendship Exchange
to England in 2002.
Denise is a Paul Harris Fellow +8, a charter member of District
6960 Paul Harris Society, a member of The Rotary Foundation
Bequest Society and a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation.
Jerry and Denise have a combined family of six children and
fourteen grandchildren.

Stephen F. (Steve) Schlueter
District Governor 2011-2013
Steve was born and raised in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee.
Starting work at age twelve, he learned a
trade in auto mechanics and
moonlighted playing bass guitar for local
rock bands including two he started.
After three years in the Army, one in
Vietnam, Steve’s support of a young
family forced him to give up music and concentrate on a career
in the manufacturing sector. Since 1990 he has owned his own
manufacturing company and operated facilities in the United
States and Mexico. Semi-retired, Steve and his wife Pam make
their home in Bradenton, Florida, have four children and three
grandchildren. For Christmas in 2006 Pam gave Steve a new
bass guitar. So after thirty plus years away, Steve has his music
back and now enjoys playing classic rock just as much as he did
then.
Steve joined Rotary in 1998 but admittedly did not become a
Rotarian until moving to Florida full time in January, 2002.
“Everyone has their ‘Rotary Moment’ and I’ve been blessed with
several these past few years.” Steve’s current focus in Rotary is
TRF, its programs and education and he enjoys the fellowship
and common bonds of being a Rotarian. Steve is a member and
Past President (2) of the Rotary Club of Anna Maria Island, Past
Assistant Governor for District 6960 Area 11, Chairman of the
District 6960 Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee, a Charter
Member of the Paul Harris Society, a Major Donor, Bequest Society Member, Benefactor and Multiple Sustaining Member.
Steve is also a Discussion Leader for the Rotary Leadership Institute, Sunshine Division.
Besides Rotary, Steve has been an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years, serving at the National,
State, District and Post levels. Steve has received numerous
awards for service at each level and has thoroughly enjoyed his
involvement. In addition to his business, volunteer work and his
music, Steve, when fully retired, looks forward to taking golf up
again.

RI Service Above Self Award Rotary’s Highest Honor
There are several important awards with which Rotary
International recognizes extraordinary service. The RI Service Above
Self Award was created by the RI Board of Directors to recognize
exemplary humanitarian Rotary service in any form at any level. The
RI Service Above Self Award is a way to recognize those who might
otherwise go unrecognized, those who are living examples of Service
Above Self.
Any Rotarian in good standing may be nominated for this award,
except the following: The District Governor, District GovernorNominee, Immediate Past District Governor, RI Director, RI Directorelect, or Past RI Director.
An individual may not nominate himself/herself for the award and may
only receive the award once. Nominees must have demonstrated
exemplary humanitarian service, in any form and at any level, with an
emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in
helping others through Rotary. Nominees’ service rendered Rotary
must have been on a continuing basis.
