A MESSAGE FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
ADRIENNE DORN
Executive Director
The Cedar Cultural Center
La Chiva Gantiva, Global Roots Festival,
September 2015

Emmy-award winning journalist and documentary film director Anisa Mehdi recently
wrote an article for Islamic Monthly in which she mentions The Cedar by name as a
powerful organization fostering unity through music. She says, “Arts bring people
together at a time when it seems our world is splitting apart… connecting people
consciously and subconsciously, with words and without. Propelling protest or building
community, enraging audiences or bringing comfort, the arts infiltrate at a level that
can only be defined as human.”
Anisa’s words get to the heart of The Cedar’s mission and values. The Cedar’s past
27 years are a testament to the power of music to bring joy, healing, celebration, and
connection into our lives and communities. We are now sharing music with more
people in new ways, responding to the changing needs of the world around us. This
past year was marked by particularly exciting growth.
In our 27th season, 60,000 people came to more than 250 all-ages music events
featuring local, national, and international musicians. Midnimo, our breakthrough
program that promotes intercultural understanding through residencies with Somali
artists, has now reached more than 12,500 people and is expanding into Mankato and
St. Cloud. In April, we cut the ribbon on The Cedar’s Community Plaza, our brand new
accessible outdoor space. In partnership with Brian Coyle Center, the Plaza now hosts
a teen-driven coffee enterprise called Triple C and will be home to small concerts,
neighborhood activities, and community gatherings.
In the pages to follow, we’ve captured some highlights from the past year, from the
excellent artists who graced our stage to the partners, volunteers, audiences, and
supporters who make it all possible. Season after season, YOU keep The Cedar growing
strong. Thank you for another amazing year!
See you at The Cedar!

SUMMER
The Cedar has been all ages since it opened in 1989.
PARTNERS
IN ACCESS
This year, we built a single-unit
accessible restroom and renovated
our fenced outdoor patio into an
open plaza. These are the first of
many efforts we have planned to improve the
accessibility of our facility. We continue to work with
partners to present off-site concerts that serve people
with disabilities, an effort which earned The Cedar
recognition as an Ally Business Partner of the Year
in 2015.
“ ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES RARELY HAVE OPPORTUNITIES
TO EXPERIENCE LIVE MUSIC. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL THAT
THE CEDAR IS HELPING CHANGE THAT, ONE PERFORMANCE
AT A TIME.” — Erika Schwichtenberg, Ally People Solutions
GOING THE
DISTANCE
In 2015, The Cedar hosted artists
from over 20 countries, and audiences
flocked from all over to see them.
In July, one family drove from Nebraska
to see Tuareg guitarist Bombino!
SOO DHOWOW
DALMAR AND
HODAN!
That’s welcome in Somali! Singers
Dalmar Yare and Hodan Abdirahman
will be in residence at The Cedar for
the next two years, supported by the
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
Part of the new generation of Somali
artists, Hodan and Dalmar are working
on creative approaches to build
demand for live music among Somali
audiences. They rocked Mankato this
past August, bringing live Somali music
to Greater Minnesota.
FALL
IT’S MARYAN’S
WORLD
Over 50% of The Cedar’s neighborhood residents are under age 25.
UNITING COMMUNITIES
Fall at The Cedar is our busiest season, and this year was
no exception. We hosted more than 70 events including volunteer
trainings, artist-led workshops, and live music performances reaching
audiences of all ages and backgrounds. There’s no better way
to unite communities than through live music!
Global
P o ot s
We kicked off our 27th Season with our annual Global Roots Festival,
four days of workshops, education programs, performances,
and after parties featuring artists from Russia, South Korea, Estonia,
Israel/Ethiopia, Somalia/USA, and Belgium. The Global Roots Festival
is the only world music festival in the state, and it’s entirely free.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
CLASS VISITS
Some call Maryan Mursal
the James Brown of Somalia!
From the moment she stepped
off the plane from London, the
legendary “Mother of Somalia”
was followed by adoring fans
and a crew of cameras. For two
weeks, she was booked solid
with workshops, discussions,
and performances as part of
The Cedar’s Midnimo program.
During her finale performance,
the lobby was crowded with
people hoping to get a ticket
to the sold-out show.

WINTER
The Cedar presents hundreds of local artists and musicians each year.
LOCAL CONNECTION
Support for local and emerging artists is integral
to The Cedar’s mission, and this winter, local
artists stole the show! The Okee Dokee Brothers,
Pert Near Sandstone, Malamanya, Dan Newton’s
Cafe Accordion Orchestra, Paul Fonfara, and more,
all performed on The Cedar’s stage.
DRONE ON
For the third year in a row, more than 50 local musical acts
from all genres performed a continuous 28-hour drone called
Drone Not Drones to raise awareness for the victims of war.
The roster included Will Oldham (“Bonnie Prince Billy”),
Martin Dosh, Alan Sparhawk of Low, and Paul Metzger.
In The Cedar’s hall, chairs were replaced by pillows and blankets,
and some dedicated fans camped all night. This year’s event
raised nearly $4,000 for Doctors Without Borders!
“THIS COMMISSION
STRENGTHENED MY RESOLVE
TO BECOME A COMPOSER.
IT WAS A BIG STEP, LIKE DIVING
HEAD FIRST OFF OF A CLIFF.”
— DeVon Gray, Cedar Commissions Artist
6 EMERGING ARTISTS
3 NIGHTS OF BRAND NEW MUSIC
OM M I S S I ONS
The Cedar Commissions (formerly 416 Commissions)
is The Cedar’s program for emerging artists supported
by the Jerome Foundation. This year, our artists
created new music exploring drought and abundance,
mystic philosophy, and the concept of authorship,
while combining various multimedia elements.
SPRING
The new Community Plaza is The Cedar's first major renovation in 30 years.
NEW GROWTH, OLD ROOTS
We continue to present the artists and musical styles that made
The Cedar a leader in folk and traditional music. This past year included
sold-out shows by singer-songwriters Iris DeMent and Greg Brown,
Nordic string trio Väsen, and newcomers like The Lowest Pair.
Our roots are strong and growing!
“WE KEEP IN TOUCH AND TRY TO
HELP EACH OTHER.”
BEYOND OUR WALLS
We built The Cedar’s new Community Plaza in response to our neighborhood’s need
for an outdoor gathering area and performance space. The Plaza is building bridges
between generations and cultures through projects like Triple C, an outdoor coffee
stand and job training program in partnership with Brian Coyle Center.
We are now bringing Midnimo to
other parts of Minnesota, allowing
Somalis and non-Somalis the
chance to experience live Somali
music for the first time.
— Jubba, discussing Somali music in the
international diaspora. Now based in Toronto,
Canada, Cedar fans welcomed him at the
airport in true Somali tradition as he arrived
for his Midnimo Residency in May.
Live music is an important
part of Somali culture, but
the civil war nearly destroyed
this rich tradition. Jubba was
a star of Waaberi Group,
a government-sponsored
music and dance troupe that
flourished before the war.
The Cedar’s Midnimo program
brings musicians like Jubba
to Minnesota to perform with
full bands, and it’s reviving
live Somali music.
