Passing
Reid Golson, also a senior, found little running room
against BC last yr. Look for him to focus more on passing.
Passing
Justin Bain’s new lease on his college career could put
him in a pivotal place. Arm strength is a plus.
Rushing
None of last year’s backs return. Transfers James Hopkins
and Troy Griffin offer many similarities, including power.
Receiving
Senior Trevor McKinley had an outstanding camp. Jeremy
McDonald and Venique Benton are gamebreakers.
Rushing
Tevis Linnebur ran for 1,100 yards in 2012, but incoming
halfback, Jarrot Bell, a JuCo transfer, plays at RB as well
as in the slot, and starts on defense as well.
Receiving
Jafar Thomas and LonDarius Thomas (no relation) lead an
entirely new receiving cache. Speed is their game.
Total Offense
Reid Golson has a chance to amp up an aerial assault if
the veteran O-Line provide him more time to distribute
the ball to those in the skill positions.
Total Offense
Justin Bain is the point man of an offense bent on
producing big-time points. Minimizing years of dormant
rust and staying healthy are critical to his success.

Tackles
LB Dalton Snyder is the top returning stopper. Backers
Kendal Evers, Jeremiah Maat and Mo Mansaray are back.
Tackles
Four of last year’s top tacklers are encumbants; led by LB
Steven Williams, FS Taylor Stull and LB Cody Linnebur.
Interceptions
SAGU had two of the NAIA’s top three, including Shakeem
Taylor, who returns. The Lions were #8 in pass defense.
Interceptions
Taylor Stull is one of three players with two picks in
2012, though the Swedes only had nine thefts all year.
Tackles for Loss
Dalton Snyder and DE Harry Ford, both weightroom
stalwarts, were SAGU standouts last fall.
Tackles for Loss
The best were LB’s Steven Williams and Nick Junker.
Watch for new D-Linemen Austin Lloyd, Dahari Gray.
QB Sacks
Undersized Harry Ford, is the little train that does, leading
the team in sacks. D.J. Johnson draws double-teams for a
reason. The Lions were held to 12 sacks a year ago.
QB Sacks
Dustin Wheeler and Steven Williams return. They each had a
pair of sacks. As a unit the Swedes had only 13 in 11 gms.

Kicking Field Goals
James Gish led the NAIA in FG’s per gm; made 15 of 21.
Kicking Field Goals
Junior Cody Lyter is a transfer from California. He would
rather kick PAT’s than field goals.
Extra Points
Cody Lyter won the job this year.
Extra Points
Senior PK James Gish connected on 23 of 24 tries.
Kickoff Returns
Jeremy McDonald gained 28 yards per runback last year.
Punting
Stephen Stewart aims to rebound after an off year in 2012.
Punt Returns
Trevor McKinley, a sure-handed senior, will return to
fielding punts this year. He is swift a’foot.
Kickoff Returns
A pair of freshmen speed burners, Jafar Thomas &
LonDarius Thomas, look to secure great field position.
Punting
Brett Crome averaged 37 yds per punt in 2012.
Punt Returns
Zach Dovenbarger ran back five punts last autumn for a
5.4 average. The Swedes hope to improve on their 4.5
team avg.

SAGU Game Day
Lions Head Coach
Jesse Godding
- Head Coach, O-Line, Special Teams
Raising the Roar!
Jesse Godding continues to
serve SAGU as Head Football Coach
and Athletic Director.
Now entering his twelfth year of service at the institution Godding attributes
his longevity to an administration that
was faithful through some very difficult
times with the football program and a
personal sense that he is very much
where God wants him in His Kingdom.
The Minnesota native’s administrative capabilities led to SAGU
administration selecting Godding as athletic director in June, 2011. His
vision for SAGU athletics as a whole, ability to persist in a task, and
competence in maximizing the resources and opportunities available
serve Godding well in his roles as football coach and athletic director.
On the football side Godding has led the program to respectability winning four games three times in the previous five years. Last year’s
4-6 record appears to leave the Lions poised for a verge of breaking
through the .500 barrier
in 2013.
Godding, who
guides a committed
coaching staff, instills a
strong sense of purpose, discipline, community and mission in
his SAGU football team.
As athletic director Godding has presided over continual change in the SAGU athletic
department. Three sports, softball and men’s and women’s cross country have been added and six of the nine head coaches at the institution
have been hired under Godding’s tenure.
Facility improvements saw the practice surfaces for football and
soccer reconditioned, baseball and softball game fields built on campus and numerous upgrades to office and meeting spaces for teams
and athletic staff.
To better match their intended recruiting footprint and create an
improved competitive setting for their sports teams SAGU will move to
the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) in 2013-2014. It is considered
to be one of, if not the, most competitive conferences in the NAIA.
In addition SAGU athletics has seen unprecedented success in
sport the previous two years on the field and court culminating with the
spring 2012 march of the Men’s Basketball team to the NAIA National
Championship Game.
Godding is most proud of the thousands of hours of community service and accolades at the conference and national
level regarding the
character of the student athletes and
coaches at SAGU a tribute to coaches and
players who understand what truly matters in athletics.
Godding has plenty of
reasons to smile.
