for the stress levels. But while days of lying poolside will
always have its place, if you leave the resort behind, there’s
a world of adventure just waiting to be explored. And in
American Samoa, its prized National Park is the perfect
place to start.

Part of a Rich History
America has a long history of providing park services to its citizens, in fact the US Government
set up the National Parks Service way back in 1916 with the creation of the world famous
Yellowstone National Park. Established in 1988, The National Park of American Samoa is proud
to be part of this rich heritage and its sights, sounds and numerous activities are a highlight for
anyone visiting the islands.
The location, 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, automatically makes this American national
park unique. It also has a completely different feel. You won’t find the usual facilities here.
Instead, the park reflects the unspoilt nature and culture of South Pacific Polynesia. If you bring
along an explorer’s spirit, you’ll soon discover secluded villages, rare plants and animals, coral
sand beaches, and astounding views of land and sea. The national park is divided into three
sections. Each one is on three different islands - Tutuila, Ofu and Tau. (American Samoa has
two more islands; Aunuu and Olosega, plus two coral atolls; Swains and Rose Atoll.)
Tutuila - The Main Island
The volcanic island of Tutuila is the first stop for any visitor to American Samoa. It is the largest
island in the group. It is home to Pago Pago (the island’s main centre), Pago Pago Harbour and
Pago Pago International Airport. From east to west, a steep mountainous spine runs the 30km
length of the island. This includes a number of notable summits. Matafao Peak is Tutuila’s tallest
mountain at 2,142 ft - about double the size of Auckland’s Sky Tower. Rainmaker Mountain
stands at 1,718 ft and Mount Alava looms directly over Pago Pago Harbour.
The Manu’a Islands - Ofu, Olosega and Tau
The Manu’a Island group, 100km east of Tutuila, includes the volcanic islands of Ofu and Olosega
(joined by a bridge), and Tau. Each of the islands is sparsely populated, with a handful of villages
of just a few hundred people each. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place! Life here is
slow – even by Pacific Island standards! The way of life is also more traditional than on Tutuila and
there are no restaurants, bars or shopping. In essence, this is as simple as life gets.
If you’re up for more of a challenge, take the 9km Mount Alava Adventure Trail. You’ll head
along ridgelines with views of the north and central parts of the national park and island. You’ll
hike up and down ladders with ropes for balance. The trail leads to Mount Alava Summit, where
you’ll be rewarded with panoramic view out across the island, before you return down another
steep section of trail to Vatia Village.
Over in the Manu’a Islands, you’ll find three more hikes to choose from. The Si’u Point Trail and
Oge Beach Trail on Ofu and Olosega, and the Tumu Mountain Trail on Tau.
Go Wild
American Samoa’s tropical rainforest is home to an abundance of wildlife. Birdlife thrives with
Pacific pigeons, multi-coloured fruit doves and blue-crowned lories. And along the coast you’ll
be able to spot white tailed tropicbirds and red-footed boobies and a variety of shorebirds.
At dusk and dawn you’ll also see the Pe’a (fruit bats) gliding above the tree tops. With their
impressive three foot wingspans, these are the only native mammals on the islands.
A Great Spot for Snorkelling
With warm, crystal clear waters that are rich with marine life, American Samoa has plenty of
options for the underwater explorer. On Tutuila you’ll find the best example at The Fagatele
Bay National Park Marine Sanctuary, with beautiful coral gardens, clams and an abundance of
colourful fish close to shore.
Over on Ofu, you’ll find first-class snorkelling off Ofu Beach – considered by many to be one of
the most picturesque in the South Pacific. Again you’ll find a great diversity of coral and fish,
plus keep an eye out for octopus and sea turtles.

On Tau the National Park takes up the whole southeastern half of the island. American Samoa’s
tallest peak, Lata Mountain lies within the park and overlooks the islands lush green rainforest
and steep cliffs. The national park areas on Ofu feature sand beaches and coral reefs, and
needless to say they come with a stunning and ever present mountain backdrop. Besides their
natural features, the Manu’a Islands provide plenty of opportunity to get a taste of local culture.
Along with the National Park’s outdoor exploration comes with a cultural adventure too. The
Homestay Programme provides an opportunity for visitors to get a real taste of local life. Visitors
can connect with local Samoans and culture in a real village setting. Residents of the villages
associated with the National Park offer accommodation and the opportunity to learn local
customs, crafts and the South Pacific lifestyle.
Welcome to Hiking Heaven
You’ll be immersed in the sights and sounds of village life, with the lush rainforest all around
you. You’ll sleep in a Samoan house (fale), live with a Samoan family and spend the day
participating in village activities.
If there’s an absolute must-do activity in the National Park, it’s hiking. On Tutuila, visitors can choose
from ten different trails. For an easy walk try the short and flat Pola Island Trail, which leads you to
a rocky beach with stunning coastal views. For a moderate walk that mixes ancient archaeological
sites and spectacular views of the northeast coastline, take the Lower Sauma Ridge Trail.
This might include tending to plantations and gardens, planting taro and banana, weaving mats
or collecting shellfish for the next meal. Each host has a set fee for accommodation and cultural
activities for a Homestay visit.
First Stop - The Visitor Centre and
Park Store
The National Park of American Samoa is open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. However, some
of the areas maybe temporarily closed due to maintenance work or safety concerns. Before
exploring the park, the best place to start is the Visitor Centre in Pago Pago, across from the
Pago Way Service Station – it’s open weekdays 8am to 4.30pm and closed on weekends and
public holidays. The Visitor Centre has exhibits, restrooms, first aid, videos and a park store,
plus the helpful Park Rangers can help you plan your day to make sure you have a safe and
enjoyable visit.
Recommendations for a Safe Visit
The sun can be intense – especially if you’ve come from a New Zealand or Australian winter.
It’s common sense stuff, but sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and protective clothing are essential.
When hiking, carry water and check for trail conditions at the visitor centre. Don’t touch coral
– coral cuts take a long time to heal and can become infected quite easily. Watch your step on
coral rubble and rocky areas.
Getting around Tutuila
To make the most of Tutuila, visitors are best to hire a car. Many of the most beautiful spots on
the island need to be discovered so your own transport is recommended. Everyone speaks
English so it’s easy to get directions and when you find somewhere special it’s nice to be on
your own timetable. Taxis are also available with the drivers more than happy to act as tour
guides. The colourful local buses are another interesting way to get around the island – plus
they’re cheap and a great way to meet the locals!

Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges from beachfront traditional Samoan fales to hotel suites, boutique
lodges and apartments. And as we have already mentioned, the National Park Service run the
National Park Home Stay Programme, where visitors can stay with host families and experience
first hand the many aspects of Samoan culture.
In a Nutshell
American Samoa is an interesting destination with plenty to offer travellers and adventurers.
It’s a destination for people who like to do, not just look – who want to get away from the buffet
table, the air conditioning and the pool and experience a piece of untouched South Pacific
nature. American Samoa is often sold as an add-on to Samoa, but for the right travel market it
should be considered a prime destination in its own right.

Tahiti has built its reputation on the promise of romance, on its
pristine marine environment, on its vibrant culture and its proud,
hospitable people. But while I’d been to the islands a number
of times before, my last visit was almost eight years ago. In
November I finally had the chance to experience it all over again.
Over the course of six days I rediscovered Tahiti, Moorea and Bora
Bora during the TravelMart travel expo, and was quickly reminded
how special this South Pacific destination really is.

You’ve all seen the many glorious photos of Tahiti and probably imagined yourself lying poolside
or on a white sand beach. I guess it’s hard not to dream about that state of bliss. But if you
can drag yourself off the sun lounger, you’ll discover endless options for adventure, romance,
indulgence and relaxation.
There is fishing, diving, sailing, surfing, golf, mountain biking, 4x4 tours, hiking, anthropology
sites, garden tours, spa treatments, wedding and honeymoon options and marine ecology
education programmes. There are opportunities to swim with whales or manta rays, feed
sharks and stingrays or get up close to dolphins and turtles. The manta ray and shark
experience being a real highlight on this particular trip – even if I was a little nervous at the start!
If there’s one place that’s a must see, it’s Bora Bora. It’s should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Nicknamed the Pearl of the Pacific, its turquoise lagoon, low-lying motu (small islets), white
sands and dominant volcano make the island a photographer’s dream. It’s hard to describe, but
when you stand there and stare out at the blues, greens and whites of this magical place, it’s
almost like your looking at a huge, highly photoshopped image. Like it’s been made up. But no,
that blue water, lush green mountainside and pure white sand is actually real and it will simply
blow you away when you see it.
If you’re after the classic over-water bungalow experience, you’ll be in heaven. You can dive off
your private swimming platform into the warm, crystal clear waters and then lie in the sun on
the spacious deck. Then impeccably trained staff will serve you impossibly delicious cuisine.
This is the life! Or more to the point – can I please stay a little longer.

They say variety is the spice of life and in Tahiti you’ll find it everywhere. If you want to kick
back in the luxury of a world class resort there are many to choose from. If you want to take a
relaxing cruise through impossibly picturesque islands you can do that too. If you’re after land
or water-based adventures, authentic cultural experiences and mouthwatering cuisine, it’s hard
to know where to start! Indeed, Tahiti is a destination that offers something for everyone. With
118 islands in five archipelagos, spread over some four million square kilometers (the size of
Europe) you are spoilt for choice. Even though most visitors tend to limit their stay to the ‘Big
Three’ - Tahiti (the main island), Moorea and Bora Bora.
Tahiti-Faa’a Airport on the main island of Tahiti is the international gateway to French Polynesia
country so it’s not surprising that Papeete (the largest centre with a population of over 130,000) is
a popular destination for visitors. It is home to sophisticated hotels, vibrant food markets, fabulous
restaurants and a cosmopolitan town centre. You’ll also find an interesting mix of Polynesian,
French, Italian and Chinese cultures – which make it a true South Pacific melting pot.
While the main island of Tahiti has it’s fair share of fine attractions, the outer islands of Tahiti
offer travellers a completely different experience and it is a shame that some people miss out on
them – especially when these opportunities are actually quite easy to access.
Air Tahiti offers around 200 flights a week to 47 of the outer islands. If you prefer taking the
nautical route, there are cruise ships (large and small) to take you to the more popular islands
and there are charter yachts on pre-arranged sailings and personalised charters.
If you venture to the outer islands (and you definitely should), you can pick from a wide range
of accommodation options - from world-class 5 star hotels right through to family hotels and
pensions (the Tahitian equivalent of a bed and breakfast). The latter is a great way to connect
with local people who will share their unique insights and give you a real locals tour.
The other member of the ‘Big Three’ is Moorea - which is only a 10-minute flight or a 40-minute
boat ride from Papeete. As soon as you arrive at Port Vaiare you can sense the laid-back
ambience of Moorea. The town is nowhere near as developed as Papeete and the locals seem
chilled, and quite happy with the quiet life they lead in their own piece of paradise.
And make no mistake, Moorea is paradise. Imagine aqua lagoons, white sandy beaches,
vibrant green gardens and the backdrop of Mount Tahiea, which soars to its summit of 1115m.
Famous as a retreat for artists, painters and writers, the island epitomises the South Pacific
experience and has inspired numerous paintings, books and films.
It’s also a great place to stay active. Hiking is a favourite activity for many visitors.
Recommended walks include 3 Coconut Tree Hill (which now has only has one tree), Mou’a
Pata and Mount Rotui. All offer river crossings, jungle walks and panoramic vistas.
As you’d expect, water based activities are everywhere. Motorboats, jet skis, paddleboards and
kayaks are all available for hire, along with fishing and diving charters and excursions.
Getting around is easy on Moorea and it’s impossible to get lost, as there is only one road
running around the island. There is good public transport, or you can rent a car, scooter or
bicycle. Quadbike tours and four-wheel-drive safaris are available to access more remote spots.
Moorea is spotlessly clean, with virtually no litter or graffiti.
If you’d prefer a natural paradise with minimal development, Tikehau is the perfect spot.
Located 215km from Tahiti, this stunning atoll is famous for its lagoon, (26km in length and
nearly circular) along with its beaches, diving options and bird watching.
If world-class fishing and diving appeal, head for Rangiroa Atoll. Its spectacular diving sites
include the Tiputa and Avatoru passes. Underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau said the
surrounding waters were the best diving he had seen - whales, sharks, turtles, dolphins and
manta rays abound and the reef and school fish are prolific. It is rated as the best diving site in
Polynesia – say no more.
From the Big Three to the smaller lesser known islands, Tahiti has the variety to cater to any
type of traveller. And it does so with a rare quality that will have you coming back for more. I
certainly won’t be leaving it another 8 years before my next visit.

Three busy Mums looking for a quick break? What better
place to go for a long weekend, than Fiji. Only three hours
away, guaranteed warmth and uninterrupted downtime.

In early December I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to escape from the children and recharge
the batteries before all the Christmas / school holiday madness set in. Our destination was Fiji, the resort of
choice the recently opened Sheraton Tokoriki Island Resort & Spa.
These days you don’t have the luxury of spending a week at a time away from the children. So it was matter
of using every moment of our four night getaway wisely. The decision to transfer to the island by helicopter
was a good one. After landing at Nadi we were transferred to the Island Hoppers reception and office where
we had a short five minute wait before we were on board and en-route to our poolside loungers.
Travelling by helicopter to Sheraton Tokoriki is a great option and within 15 minutes we were at the resort
checking in. On top of having such a speedy transfer, we get a brilliant birdseye view of the beautiful sea,
coral formations and the outer islands.
If the helicopter transfer doesn’t work, the other option is a boat transfer on South Sea Cruises, which
departs from Port Denarau. This journey takes around an hour and a half.
One of the great things about Sheraton Tokoriki is that it has an adults-only accommodation section, where
busy mums, honeymooners and couples can really enjoy the tranquil surroundings and stunning outlook.
We were also delighted to find that one of the dining options was Flying Fish Tokoriki’. Having dined in Flying
Fish at the Sheraton Resort Denarau, we knew we were in for a fantastic meal.
‘Flying Fish Tokoriki’ reflects Peter Kuruvita’s love for fresh seafood and the Pacific region. The Australian
TV chef has created a menu that features fresh seafood and as much local produce as possible. Flying Fish
Tokoriki offers A La Carte menus and themed buffets. For something a bit more casual, snacks and light
meals can be enjoyed around the bar area.
As we began to relax and leave behind the demands of our small people at home, we became well
acquainted with the fabulous bar staff, especially Kini, who knew how to make a very tasty cocktail. The
fresh fruit daiquiris and pina coladas were thoroughly enjoyed while we watched the sun go down. Bliss.
And of course it wouldn’t be a ladies weekend away without a visit to the spa. The Tokoriki Retreat Spa
offers exactly what we were looking for - the ultimate in relaxation. We all enjoyed a firm, but relaxing
massage to help speed up our wind down! The spa offers Thalgo Marine and Body treatments and Pure Fiji
natural body care.
Lack of a decent sleep is one thing we all seem to have in common as mothers, so we were quite delighted
when we crawled into the Sheraton ‘Sweet Sleeper’ beds. Super comfortable, say no more. With the
majority of the rooms being beachfront or ocean view, it’s a perfect place to relax and kick back. And if you
feel like being active, there are plenty of water sports to keep you busy. And for those who don’t, there are
plenty of sun loungers.
Sheraton Tokoriki also has the complimentary LaiLai Kids Club, and a wedding chapel, but we weren’t really
thinking about children or husbands!
Back to the mainland we enjoyed our final evening at Sheraton Fiji Resort at Denarau. Set amongst the tropical
gardens and swaying palm trees, this resort always offers such a warm welcome. Our last meal was enjoyed
with the sand under our feet at Flying Fish (same name different location!). If only we had another night or two
we would have loved to experience the many dining outlets the Starwood properties have on offer.
Fiji and the Sheraton Resorts; simply a luxurious and carefree place to visit, a place to completely slow
down and treat yourself, as every good mother deserves.

Virgin Australia flights will be running direct flights from Christchurch to Rarotonga from
June 2016, allowing South Islanders to fly to the tropical island destination without transit.
General Manager of Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, Graeme West says the news is a
welcome relief for South Islanders wanting a winter getaway. “There hasn’t been a nonstop service from Christchurch to Rarotonga for many years and we are delighted that
Virgin Australia has seized the opportunity. It’s a short non-stop flight to paradise.”
Flights will depart Christchurch at 2pm on a Saturday and arrive in Rarotonga at 8.35pm
the day prior. The return flight from Rarotonga to Christchurch departs at 11.10pm and
arrives in Christchurch at 2.25am on Sundays.
“It’s perfect for leaving the cold to arrive in a beautiful tropical climate a few hours later,
ready to enjoy a relaxing and easy seven night holiday,” said Graeme. New Zealand
visitors represent 67 percent of total arrivals into the Cook Islands. And Graeme says the
flights will help those numbers increase further.

New Year, New Rooms
for Nouvata Parc Hotel
The Nouvata Parc Hotel team is
giving all of its rooms a face-lift in the
New Year. Beginning in January, all
120 rooms will be refurbished starting
with the top three floors and working
down through the 10 stories. A floor
will be left empty, below the floors
undergoing restoration, to minimize
noise and inconvenience.
The soft refurbishment includes
repainting and a change in floor
covering in both the rooms and
hallways, new wardrobes and a
renovation of kitchenette areas. There will be new TVs, new curtains, chairs and bedside
tables and the replacement of ceiling lights and all electrical wall sockets. The bathrooms
will be refitted with new shower cabinets, tiling, glass partitions and flooring and the basin
area will be renovated with overhead lighting. All bathrooms will continue to have New
Zealand and Australian electrical sockets. There is no change to the configuration of the
rooms and work is due to be completed by the end of August 2016.

Industry Evening a Success

Santo Wharf Upgrade Set
for March Completion
The Luganville Cruise Committee has confirmed that required improvements to
the wharf, to allow cruise ships to berth, are planned to be completed by March
2016. While construction delays have meant no cruise ships have been able to
call in this peak season, the new work will bring significant benefits to Santo for
many years to come. If all goes according to plan, the first cruise ship expected
in Luganville for 2016 will be the Golden Princess which is scheduled for March
16. Plans to reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall cruise passenger
experience were also submitted.

Visitor Arrivals Soar
International visitor arrivals to the Solomon Islands have increased by an impressive 30 per cent.
Official government figures released this week show a total of 2211 international travellers visited the
destination in September, eclipsing the 1730 total recorded for the same period in 2014 with significant
gains recorded in the Australian, New Zealand and Fiji markets.
Australian visitors again topped the list with the 1029 total recorded for the month making up 46 per
cent of all arrivals.
For the first time New Zealand visitor arrivals overtook Fiji, increasing to 49 per cent from the same
period in 2015. The Australia and New Zealand results were mirrored by increased visitors from Fiji (110
per cent), Papua New Guinea (37 per cent) and the United States (50 per cent).
Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau CEO Josefa Tuamoto attributed the increases to the ongoing
marketing activities in key source markets - particularly Australia and New Zealand - by the national
tourist office in partnership with Solomon Airlines

Islands this month, putting the
nation firmly on the tourism map.
‘Our Pacific’ introduces

important source of international visitor arrivals to the area.
‘Our Pacific’ product managers Janne Malcolm and Daryl Ann
Phizacklea visited the Solomon Islands in late November, as guests
of the Visitors Bureau and Solomon Airlines to investigate the
potential the destination offers the New Zealand market.
The opportunity was described
as “beyond major” by Solomon
Islands Visitors Bureau CEO,
Josefa Tuamoto, who hosted
the crew.
They are now offering a seven-night ‘Guadalcanal Highlights’
package, a seven-day stay at the renowned Fatboys Resort in Gizo
in the Western Province and a three-day ‘Seakayaking Trek’ on the
World Heritage-nominated Morovo Lagoon.

Rendova Island. Their main
focus was on the country’s
unique culture, WWII history,
natural environment, diving,
surfing, flora and fauna.
Josefa said he expected the footage generated by the visit to firmly propel the Solomon Islands into the world
tourism spotlight. “National Geographic’s reach is incredible. We know the Solomon Islands program will be
broadcast to more than 40 countries around the world and across several regions,” he said.
“In the USA alone the National Geographic Channel is available to more than 86 million television households so the
potential to showcase our tourism potential is enormous,” he said.
Solomon Airlines First Female
Pilot Takes the Airbus Helm
Kiwi Captain Claudia Walding has become the first female pilot to take command of Solomon Airlines’
flagship Airbus A320. Captain Walding has been piloting Solomon Airlines’ Islander and Twin Otter
aircraft since joining the carrier in 2000 and her recent attainment of an Airline Transport Pilots License
now allows her to take the helm of the carrier’s A320 flagship.
Solomon Airlines CEO Captain Ron Sumsum said Captain Walding’s appointment is a benchmark
moment for the carrier’s equal opportunity development programme, her success representing a major
achievement in the context of a traditionally male dominated Melanesian environment.
“Since joining us Claudia has never looked back,” Captain Sumsum said. “She is an inspiration to her
gender, having the right mindset to turn a long term potential goal into a reality.”

Discovering the Explored
by Virna Smith, Marketing Manager for Scenic Group
I arrived in Tonga not quite knowing exactly what there was to do on the mainland of Nuku’alofa.
But I was very much looking forward to finding out! My base for this four day visit was Scenic
Hotel Tonga, an easy five minute drive from the airport. The hotel has recently undergone some
family friendly changes with the addition of a new mini golf course and children’s playground,
plus a driving range for the grown-ups. It’s a great place to relax and I did just that with a tasty
pre-dinner drink and a delicious dinner.
On my first morning I was invited to swim with the whales under the guidance of Jeff and his
crew from Whale Swim, Fish & Dive … what an incredible experience! For the first part of the trip
we were taken to a coral reef to ‘practice’ our snorkelling. And from there we were off! In no time
at all we ‘spotted’ a mum and her calf. We could hardly wait to get into the water, but safety was
paramount so we settled down, listened to the skipper and followed all the commands from our
guide who went into the water with us.
What a surreal experience … there they were below the surface, about 10 metres from us gliding
through the water gracefully. The female was around 14 metres in length and her baby calf
around six metres. The mum came up to get some air and her calf followed - the highlight being
a magnificent breach. It’s something I will remember forever!
The next day I spent the morning wandering through the market in Nuku’alofa. From fresh
produce to beautiful handicrafts, there is so much to see, you could quite easily spend few hours
browsing the stalls. The locals are very friendly and very talented! The afternoon was spent back
at Scenic Hotel Tonga, just lazing around the pool, reading and enjoying the peace and tranquility
in a beautiful setting. Bliss.
The next day was a Sunday, which is celebrated as a strict sabbath. I’d heard about Pangaimotu
Island where the locals head over to after church and usually spend the whole afternoon there,
enjoying the beach, the music and fabulous food! So I headed into Nuku’alofa, located the jetty
and boarded a water taxi. The half hour journey across to Pangaimotu Island is breathtakingly
beautiful and from the moment I stepped on the island, I felt like I was in another world.
The big attraction is ‘Big Mama Yatch Club’ and Big Mama herself, as she is fondly referred to by
everyone, including tourists. I enjoyed a delicious freshly caught fish and chips lunch, a local beer
and decided to ‘walk if off’ with a little island exploration.
I was sad to leave Pangaimotu Island and can’t wait to go back. There is so much to discover in
Tonga, stay local and explore it’s totally worth it!

Taumeasina on Track
The development of Taumeasina Island Resort, just outside Apia, will provide an exciting

Resort, has now set up office on his new island home and has reported that construction is

the hike out to Kaena Point.

The round trip is 8.7km and
make sure you take water and
sunscreen as it can get hot.
This laid back surf town on the
Oahu’s famous North Shore,
is a great place to getaway
from the buzz of Waikiki. There
are numerous café’s, boutique
shops, surf shops (of course),
restaurants and art galleries to
enjoy. Make sure you stop at
one of the North Shore’s many
shrimp trucks…delish!
