Fans of America East, Commissioner For the first time in America East history, the conference is proud to provide our fans with a men’s and women’s basketball fan guide. This 24-page, full-color book will help fans follow the action all season long. These are exciting times in America East basketball. In 2005-06 for the second-consecutive season an America East basketball team won a game in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 11 Hartford Hawks women’s team knocked off sixth-seeded Temple, 6458. On the whole, America East women’s basketball boasted a conference-best RPI of 11th among 31 Division I conferences. Patrick Nero While playing under the mantra “Why Not Us?”, the Albany men’s basketball team nearly became the first No. 16 seed to win a game in the NCAA Tournament as it led by as many as 12 points in the second half before falling to No. 1 Connecticut, 72-59. Last season’s successes have led to optimism for 2006-07. America East will get the season started when Hartford participates in the preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), as the Hawks play host to Dartmouth. In addition, Albany and Maine men’s basketball teams have been selected to the pool of teams to participate in the fifth-annual BracketBusters series, which will be televised on the ESPN family of networks on Friday-Saturday, February 16-17. Having been fortunate enough to receive nationally televised games for the past two BracketBusters series, we are extremely excited once again to have two teams chosen to the BracketBusters pool. Albany and Maine are expected to be two of our top programs for the upcoming season, so we couldn’t be happier to have them included in this tremendous event. The chance to gain national exposure through ESPN’s various networks is a great opportunity for not only Albany and Maine, but also America East For the benefit of our fans, America East and it’s member schools will produce over 50 basketball games for television during the 2006-07 season. The contests are available to regional sports networks, local-market stations and cable outlets and will be streamed live on the web at www. AmericaEast.com. In addition, ESPN2 will televise the men’s title game live on March 12 at 12 noon. For the second-consecutive season, America East will also produce and distribute America East On Campus, a half-hour, feature-oriented television show. America East On Campus, hosted by Eric Frede, will have a minimum of five episodes in 2006-07. The league is also excited about bringing the 2007 America East Men’s Basketball Championship back to Boston. Boston University’s Agganis Arena is expandable to 7,200 seats for basketball and should serve as an elite facility for the conference’s premier event. We are glad to once again be able to use Binghamton University’s 5,142-seat Events Center, this time for the 2007 America East Women’s Basketball Championship. It served as a great venue for the past two men’s championships and we expect the same atmosphere and excitement for our women’s tournament. We hope this fan guide will help as you follow America East basketball this season. We at America East thank you for your continued support and look forward to the 2006-07 season.
