BEVERLEY BLARNEY www.beverley.wa.gov.au Edition 381 July 2016 No Charge Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 1 President Report – July 2016 Beverley Water Harvesting Launch On Friday 10 June 2016 the Hon Mia Davies MLA, Minister for Water; Sport and Recreation; Forestry (and Member for Central Wheatbelt) officiated the launch of Beverley’s Water Harvesting Project. Whilst Council has long considered the benefit of such a proposal, its path to realisation was finally achieved following the formation of a committee of interested community members, success in securing a Department of Water grant for $100,000, the Shires engagement of a Development Officer to assist with projects that provide long term benefit for the community, and Council’s financial and in-kind support through the budgetary process. Congratulations to all involved, and thankyou to the many community members who attended the launch. The Minister also made an announcement that the Beverley P&C and School had been successful with their application to the Department of Water Community Water Supply Program and would be receiving a grant of $98,000 toward water harvesting at the school! Road Works Maintenance grading has been occurring on Edison Mill, Dale Bin North, Dobaderry, Kokedin, Kiera, Dale Kokeby and Walgy roads and the shoulders have been graded on the Top Beverley Rd. Work has been undertaken on a section of Morbinning Rd reconstructing shoulders with extra gravel and gravel sheeting will commence on Nicholas St (road to rubbish dump) in preparation for proposed bituminizing in 16/17. Age Friendly Community Plan Work on developing an Age Friendly Community Plan for Beverley is due to commence. This is supported by a successful Department of Local Government Grant and once completed will assist in future planning for our community including relevant grant applications. Bus Stop Relocation – Date to be Advised A date for relocation of the Transwa bus stop from Elizabeth St to Council Rd is yet to be advised. The cement pad at the new location has been extended to support universal access and accommodate a new shelter, which will be installed in the near future. Beverley Heroic – 08/09 October 2016 – save the date! The 2016 Beverley Heroic cycling event was recently announced as one of the successful applicants from the 16/17 round of Regional Events Scheme. Last month the open weekends saw quite a few visitors venture out to Avondale and everyone seems to fall in love with the place. The drive trail has been very popular with a lot of people especially those from the city who get to see the ewes and lambs up close. Our very interesting variety of chickens in the animals nursery is also another place where young kids have come to realise that chickens come in all shapes and sizes. The animal nursery is slowly getting a makeover and will with fingers crossed that it will be fox proof by the time I have finished. I have been lucky to have Section 95 come out and give me hand over the past month, Peter Smithers and his crew from Wooroloo Prison have been a massive asset in helping me get those big jobs done. Both Robbie and Comet seem to enjoy the extra apples the boys bring they always seem to put on that please feed us look and once again people fall for it. Next month at Avondale the NTWA and AFPA will host a Volunteer Day, on this day we will aim to have a busy bee in the Avondale Bush reserve. See attached flyer on page 31 of this Blarney edition and around town for more details. Over the past couple of months my ever so awesome sidekick Mitch Kerr has had to give up working on the Clydesdales due to her ever so busy schedule. Mitch will still be involved with AFPA where possible, her time with the boys has had to be cut back. Both Comet and especially Robbie have come a long way with Mitch’s guidance and skills, and all that she’s taught both horses. It is here I say a MASSIVE THANK YOU from not just the horses but myself and AFPA for all you have done with these two Clydesdales. Mitch’s time and effort has not gone unnoticed the many hours that she has spent on these boys has made a difference. If you bump into Mitch in town please give her a hug and a thanks I’m sure she will appreciate it. Sixteen hardy members braved the wet and cold weather and car pooled to Perth. A short meeting was held at a coffee house in Mundaring and then our members proceeded to Guildford to hit the shops and nurseries. We lunched in Guildford and then visited a native plant nursery in the Hills. The weather was kind to us and, although cold we missed the rain. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. The club has started on our display for the Beverley Show and we are working on it in Colleen’s shed every Friday. July is our ‘Golden Oldies Luncheon’ which, this year, will be held at the RSL hall on the first Tuesday of the month. Younger members wait on the treasured older members and their friends. We all enjoy this annual event. Have you noticed all the roses around the district? The good rains have delivered a plethora of blooms in most gardens. Keep up the dead heading and feeding to set your bushes up. Vegie gardens are producing well and progressive planting will keep them coming. This is the time to plant asparagus and to separate artichokes and plant the pups. These are both perennials and rewarding to grow. Garlic is another one and can be put in now. Gardeners should be aware that a frost could occur any day now and you need protection for vulnerable plants. The garden club welcomes new members and any enquiries may be made to the Secretary Dalene Davies on 9646 0800. Happy gardening everyone. www.beverley.wa.gov.au Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 13 14 Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 www.beverley.wa.gov.au L – R: Kathryn McLean Shire CDO, Hon Mia Davies MLA, Dee Ridgway Shire President, Geoff Edwards 1951 cyclist York Dental Surgery Now located at the York Wellness Centre (Old Primary School) 6 Howick St York Opening Hours: Mon, Tues, Wed: 8.30am – 4.30pm Thurs: 8.30am- 12noon Dental surgeon Dr John Fenn has provided comprehensive dental care in York for over eighteen years. No it’s not an over ripe fruit RYPEN is the acronym for “Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment” and Local Bruce Rock Teenager “Jordan Mollenoyux” has just completed the three day event held in Serpentine. Jordan was one of 43 participants and 10 facilitators who made the three day event one of the largest in recent times. According to Jordan (15) she was blown away by the almost “Family Like” environment and couldn’t say enough on how much the three days has had an impact on her. RYPEN is designed around the 14 – 17 year age group and focuses on providing leadership skills. Jordan expressed how amazed she was at the friendliness and team spirit that developed in such a short time. “We were set up into groups of five and given tasks and exercises that stretched our initiative and communication skills, but I cannot give too much away as the content and the actual tasks are kept confidential so as not to spoil it for those who are yet to attend this great event” Jordan went on to say she couldn’t recommend strongly enough to other teenagers how much they could benefit from attending, “We discussed world issues, learnt about planning and trust all done using real life situations and giving us the opportunity to come up with ways we would handle them. It was FANTASTIC! I’m so glad I went and I’d encourage any other teenagers to get in touch with their local Rotary club and get on the list! It has given me another way of looking at not only my school life but everything! I’d like to really thank the E-WA Rotary club for sponsoring me to attend” Jordan said when addressing the E-WA Rotary club on a live online video meeting held recently. E-WA Rotary is the first online Rotary club in WA appealing to those in more remote areas as it provides all the benefits of a traditional club with the added advantage of being able to participate in the community as a Rotarian and attend to meetings and other business from the comfort of their own home via the internet. E-WA president-elect (next year’s president) is also a Bruce Rock Local “Alison Lockwood” Ms Lockwood said “The club is very new but already boasts 20 + members, a big difference we are finding is that a lot of younger people are attracted now as this method of communication appeals to them more than having to physically go to a meeting in a pub or club room, and they too can be involved in this well-known organisation doing good within their own communities. Amanda began her current project at the beginning of last year and while she has completed other quilts and projects along the way she continues to return to her beautiful Baltimore patterned quilt. Amanda’s quilt has been taken from a Karen Cunningham design featuring a replica of a wreath block originally made in the 1860s which the designer has called The Jester. Canasta - Samba If you are interested please come along to the CWA hall on Saturday afternoons at 1.00pm. Enquiries 9646 0457 The center of the quilt will have four repeats of the block shown in the photo, then surrounded by two boarders, the inner boarder is machined triangles and the outer boarder will be appliquéd panels. The patterns are appliquéd. Every piece is traced onto kitchen paper which is ironed onto the fabric, cut out leaving extra for a hem and the edges fold under before being blind hemmed, by hand onto the back ground fabric. The finished quilt is 80” square so there is a lot of work to do. The second photo shows the beginning details of the outer boarder. 20 Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 www.beverley.wa.gov.au WESTDALE MECHANICAL T/A R.L. & T.L. Lyme Disease Association of Australia What is Lyme disease? Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria known as Borrelia. The bacteria, a spirochete, is transmitted when an individual is bitten by a vector e.g. tick. Lyme disease can impact many bodily systems and organs and can in some cases mimic other illnesses e.g. Lupus. As well as giving people Lyme Disease, the ticks often also transmit other diseases (co-infections). Like syphilis, Borrelia is a great imitator. The clinical symptoms of chronic, stage 3 Lyme Borreliosis can imitate many chronic diseases including motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. These chronic diseases are on the rise for reasons unknown. The Nobel Prize laureate Luc Montagnier has stated “chronic diseases = chronic infections” as an increasing number of scientific articles present, the evidence is building. Borreliosis has a myriad of symptoms. These symptoms can start a week after a tick bite or much later, and include sinusitis, stiff neck, sweat attacks, muscle twitches, muscle weakness, involuntary jerking of limbs, arthritis, Bell’s palsy, cramps, paralysis, depression, brain fog, insomnia, balance problems, light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, optic neuritis, nerve conduction defects, numbness, ECG (cardiac conduction) abnormalities, swallowing difficulties, tinnitus and more. It can also be asymptomatic (no symptoms), the major determinants being the load and type of bacteria present and the immune status of the individual. For a summary of the signs and symptoms of Lyme borreliosis go to www.karlmcmanusfoundation.org A symptom assessment form and monitoring chart is also available. This program’s primary role is community education on men’s holistic wellbeing. This is delivered in three ways: 1. Warrior Education Sessions; 2. Fast Track Pit Stop; 3. Advocacy. The RMHI emphasis is on men’s holistic wellbeing and health, which means the whole person and understanding problems/issues in the context of life. When we consider the individual we believe we are more than just physical and mental beings, the often neglected element is our “social/spiritual” wellbeing. We promote the requirement that it is important to know and understand the story behind our identity and what it is that makes us an individual. Modern Western Medicine is too often about: Diagnosing ills; Prescribing pills; and Sending bills The “human factor” can get lost in the medical mix. It has been said to me in the past that the definition of a good accountant is, “they get to know the people in the business”; this is no different to the functioning of a good doctor or specialist. In the work we do this is obvious, especially in the case of both the diagnosis and marketing of mental health issues. We talk about “situational distress”, which is the space between being well and being diagnosed with a mental illness. Quite often we fail to 26 Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 www.beverley.wa.gov.au realize that most mental illnesses start from situations that are unresolved in our lives. Sometimes we have to allow people, in particular blokes, to be in this space which is about people having a “normal reaction to an abnormal event”. Often men know the issues but we don’t want to show ourselves as the “only one” with a problem. Men in particular struggle because we think we are failing, rather than realizing we are battling issues beyond our making and/or control. A lot of the time it is about giving blokes permission and pointing blokes in the right direction to seek the best medical advice the can. Blokes are warriors and that winning and macho attitude is very prevalent which often inhibits help seeking behaviour and can contribute to delays in men getting to the doctors. In regional areas the distance factor and lack of services also plays a role. Our slogan “…before it all gets too much…Talk to a Mate!!” is the basis of all our initiatives. Mateship, empathy and appropriate use of humour is the key to connectedness in our programs and presentations. We don’t do health assessment but we do health awareness, which is quite often the missing link. For more information you can contact The Regional Men’s Health Initiative. Key tasks for this Grant include managing the acquittal of the $14,000 grant that was applied for back in September 2016, Sarah’s tasks will include liaising with stakeholders and to co-ordinate volunteer and in-kind support. The grant outputs include, photo-point monitoring, feral animal control, an updated fauna survey, installation of new gates and the mending of fencing, weed control, revegetation, look into the installation of cages and the use of Elliott traps with the guidance of infrared camera traps; and place nesting boxes within the reserve and habitat installation Farm warden Mon has undertaking some baiting but at present it is on hold due to the lambing season. The impact has been difficult to quantify as the reserve gates are left open to allow movement of kangaroos in and out. The grant will fund fauna monitoring with installation of camera traps, cages and additional fox bait to help maintain a more definitive estimate of the quantity of native and introduced animals within the reserve at any one time. Baiting and trapping will continue after lambing season. To help reduce the feral cat population along with fox control. Fence inspections are regularly conducted and have identified areas where repair is needed. New reserve gates have been installed and vermin proofed. It is proposed that fence repairs are undertaken by volunteers on a planned community day on 16 July. The work will include cutting fallen branches that are resting on the fence; reattaching skirting layers; add missing skirting to an area on the eastern boundary, and pegging skirting and filling holes dug under the fence. It is also proposed that habitat within the reserve be improved through the installation of nesting boxes and creation of habitat in the form of logs etc. along the walk trail path. Fallen log habitats can be created by securely stacking a pile of sturdy branches together near the base of a tree or near rock piles that are naturally occurring. Photo points have been established to monitor progress of the reserve rehabilitation that was carried out back in early 2014. Recent photos show that previous revegetation appears to have been successful along the majority of the north-western border. The ultimate goal of the revegetation is to protect the interior part of the reserve from seed blown in from the neighbouring farmlands. New plantings will be understory and ground cover plants along the north-western border and within bare patches along the southern border. Beginning a seedbank with collected seed from the reserve as well as a herbarium to document plant species would be a good start to developing independent seed propagation for the reserve and the use of a building on site is being investigated for this purpose in the future. A revegetation plan is currently being created to follow on from work already undertaken and to ensure retention of the conservation values of the bushland into the future. Weed spraying has been undertaken prior to the community day when volunteers are needed to help with the proposed planting. Bonfire piles have been created within the reserve as the quantity of dry wood is a dangerous fire risk. The current weather conditions have made lighting difficult. Planting trials will need to be run on the burnt areas. A controlled burn that will successfully avoid both the priority 4 flora and the Jam trees (acacia accuminata) has been surveyed. It would remove a very large quantity of dead wood from the reserve and encourage recruitment of dormant seed within the seed bank. When weather and ground conditions are ideal, DFES and the Emergency response team from Beverley have agreed to help with a prescribed burn. A community day will be held at Avondale on 16 July with assistance from the National Trust, Avondale Farm Project Association, Beverley Naturalist Club and Men of the Trees. If you are interested in helping out for some or all of the day, please contact Sarah Gosney on 0423 252 845 or venolia@yahoo.ca. This has been a long time ambition of Haydn Rayner, to oversee the restoration of the carriage that his late wife Ann had instigated so long ago. As is often the case, with work commitments and ill health prevailing, the time has slipped by but now, just past the 6th anniversary of Ann’s death, the time seems right. To help Haydn is our ever handyman Barry Knight and you will find them hard at it every Thursday. Thank you both, we are very grateful for this ongoing commitment. If anyone else would like to join them, or maybe just take them a cuppa, with an encouraging word, please don’t hesitate. Station Gallery Due to electrical power outage in most of the town on the morning of the 16 June, the Book Launch by Kelly Newton-Wordsworth that was to be held at the CRC was relocated to the Gallery where lights and power points were still working. About a dozen attended the launch where some lively and interesting discussion arose. It’s been a quieter month at the Station for most the committee, but with the cancellation of the intended artist for June, our coordinator Marylou advertised for short-stay artists and then had a busy time fitting all the applicants in as there were so many! Thanks Marylou. Artist-in-Residence The first artists for the month were Hazel Moore (left) and Sandy Robertson (below), and their paintings as were hanging in the gallery (below right). They were joined for two nights by Hazel’s sister-in-law Jenny, also an artist. Hazel and Jenny aren’t newcomers to town as Jenny and her husband John have a house in Dawson St where Hazel’s son Steve now lives. It’s a wonder that any artwork was accomplished at all during the week with interruptions like Station Singers’ practice, electrical blackouts and a book launch amongst the usual visiting tourists, but they insisted they had a great time and met so many lovely people whom they thank so much for making them so welcome. They also spoke of the accommodation being so nice, comfortable and convenient, and would have happily stayed longer with time to run workshops. 34 Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 www.beverley.wa.gov.au Lesley Austin from Mandurah was the next artist to cover the weekend 23 to the 26 June. Inspired by nature and natural forms, her paintings of realistic birds and impressionistic flowers and landscapes are exquisite. The first weekend in July will see Kathy Allam at the Station. Kathy is a painter and sculptor whose artistic practice explores the repurposing and revaluing of items commonly discarded. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions, the most notable being at Sculptures by the Sea, Cottesloe from 2011 to 2014 and Bondi in 2013. On 06 – the 9 July Susan Payne plus three others from the WA Watercolour Society will be at the Gallery with an exhibition of their works so please call in to view their painting during gallery hours or if the sign is out on the pavement. Arriving July 12 is Dr Myer Taub who was to return for a two month stay mid-June, bringing with him three other artists, but due to work and travel constraints the time has now been shortened to just one month. Dr. Myer Taub is a lecturer in the Drama Department at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he teaches a variety of courses in the theatre and performance studies programs. His research scope includes areas such as Performance as Research (PaR), identity, performance as intervention and artistic practice within the theme of garbage and waste. He is a core researcher in the Capitol Cities Project, based at the University of Pretoria and a research leader in the Social Life of Waste Art, (SLOW) network based in the www.beverley.wa.gov.au Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 35 Southern African region. His international network includes being part a member of the PaR Working Group based within the International Federation of Theatre Research. Outside of the university he actively works in areas such as theatre making, live art - performance projects situated in museums and heritage sites and places concerned with the environmental humanities. He is will be based at the Beverley Arts Station from July 13 where he will be working on several art performance projects with themes associated with treasure, presence and collaboration. He will also be bringing along to Beverley during his residency tenure at Beverley several Australian and South African artists including Andrew Lamprecht from the Michaelis School of the Arts who in in collaboration with Dr. Myer Taub, has been exploring the intersection of performance, fantastical fiction, fine art and the nature of historicity in a series of deeply researched performances in South Africa over the last decade. The opportunity to extend this art-esearch in Beverley will allow the work to break the bounds of a South African context and highlight links that exist between the two countries. Additionally, the type of site-specific performance that will be produced aims to open up new and different modes of fine art per formative practice, embedded in an understanding and exploration of the local landscape and drawing in collaborators from both South Africa and Australia. Professor Alain Said Professor Alain Said, originally from the University of Talagashee, New Zealand now based in Cape Town is an independent scholar in art history and artefact will present some of his seminal findings on the relationship between Ley-Lines, Charles Darwin, the Occult, UFOs and The Holy Grail at the Beverley Town Hall, Shire of Beverley, Western Australia on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July. It was a jam packed program with 33 motos to cram in starting at sun up all the way through to sun down. The track was in tip top condition thanks to a dedicated committee with competitors coming from as far as Carnarvon to compete. Competitors were definitely not disappointed with the local track and many praised the club for the smooth running and well organised day of events. Many thanks go to MXWA for giving Beverley the chance to host such an outstanding event. Thanks also to those extra helpers on the day, without your additional help it is what made the day for us such a smooth running event. For leader board results for the junior state round competition and other information head to: http://www.perthmx.com/wamx-junior-state-round-bursts-into-the-avon-valley/ for the full story. The BDMC are ever so lucky to have such a dedicated committee who put in many hours and give up their non racing weekends to make sure that the Beverley track is in top condition and of such high standard. Without Anthony Fiaschi, Greg Offer, Bob Vanderlaan, Debbie Clements, committee and crew the track would not be of such excellent condition. I am pretty sure all club members, spectators and riders wish to thank you all for your ongoing support that you give to the club. Without these people Beverley Districts Motorcycle Club would not be what it is today. Beverley Districts Motorcycle Club are constantly seeking to improve the way the club is run from its very strict rider safety standards to improving the canteen facilities to making sure all flaggies are safe and out of the weather on race days. Our next Go Moto day is on July 17 and so far from the interest from riders looks to be another successful day. Spectator entry on Go Moto and Ulinga Cup race days is free to all spectators with the club having a fully operational canteen and a spectator viewing platform, it’s a great way to watch an afternoon of motocross action in Beverley. Also a huge thank you to Hotel Beverley who has been our ongoing supporter for many years John Maxwell and his team your hospitality and support has always been outstanding. FLAGGIES WANTED!! Beverley Blarney, Edition 381 – July 2016 53 Beverley Horse and Pony Club June has just flown by, with the club holding a rally and another event, and the members were out and about competing. It is so good seeing so many of our riders going out and having a go at different events and having fun, which is the most important part. At the beginning of each rally it's really great that everyone comes over and helps set up all the equipment. Thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated. Our club rally was held on Sunday 19 June and it was a fantastic day. We had Judy Rose come along as our visiting coach, she put the two older groups through their paces. While Jenifer and Tess are continuing to do a fantastic job covering the aspects of riding with the two younger groups. It is a requirement at each rally every group has to participate in a horsemastership lesson, which covers understanding how to care for and look after their ponies. Our club is grateful to have such knowledge and experience to teach our juniors, many thanks to Annette, Jenifer, Anne and Tess for all of the lessons at the rallies. The photo on the right is of Bethany, Jacob, Layla and Soraya learning the different parts of their ponies. On Saturday 11 June the club held a ‘Show Jumping Training Day’ with experienced coach Noel Mustchin instructing the riders. Although numbers were half of last years it was still a awesome day with Noel being able to spend more time with each rider. We were lucky enough to have Nicole Lockyer photography there capturing moments from throughout the day. If you would like to see these images please head to www.nicolelockyerphotography.com. Our next rally is on Saturday 23 July. Please arrive at 7.45am to help set up, those that are unable or stay for the full day please let Vicky know so we can adjust the program.
